A really enjoyable day out....not loads of dates thrown at you in chronological order, but interesting facts about the island, way of life, flora and fauna that you can relate to what you're seeing. Lucy was a very knowledgeable and experienced guide that we were very pleased to spend a day with. Small group of 6-8 was perfect and we had the lunch included which made the whole thing great value for money. We learnt alot and thoroughly enjoyed our day. The extra 4.50 Euro pp for the Lecada walk was well worth it. Lovely.

Great tour, expertly guided by Marco. Small group of just 5 which meant more flexibility and personal attention as we navigated the vagaries of the Madeira weather. Despite (or perhaps because of) the rain and mist the levada walk was beautiful, so atmospheric. The included lunch at Santana was enormous and really tasty. After descending from the higher points we made our way to Ponta de Sao Lorenço which was stunningly beautiful and happily by then in full sunshine. We had all the seasons in one day but still had a fantastic day. Thanks to Marco for all his local knowledge and excellent driving.
Had a great time . Pick up was right on time and Carlos was an excellent guide. Incredible how he swapped from 1 language to another with ease. Itinerary was full on but lots of stops made it comfortable and the day never seemed to be rushed. Levada walk was lovely and the scenery was amazing throughout the whole trip. Lunch was delicious with a lot of choice offered , unbelievable value and great restaurant.
Definitely a great day trip with a really passionate and knowledgeable guide. He gave us enough time at each stop to explore and gave us a lot of interesting information about Madeira along the way. The food at lunch was plentiful and delicious. My only thing I would change is that I would have appreciated the guide to put the child seat in one of the front seats of the mini bus, before other guests were picked up, rather than us having to sit near the back which is harder on kids in general, especially on the very winding roads of Madeira. Adults are typically able to deal with car sickness a lot easier than small children. That being said, it was still a really great day and I would definitely do it again and recommend anyone else to book!
Full day of unbelievable views of the ocean, natural pools you can swim in, waterfalls. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t allow to go on Levada walk or see the Forest, so can’t comment on these. Chose lunch option and it was a 3-course feast, plus wine!
Avoid avoid avoid! Tour was a no show! Shortly after the schedule pick up time of 9am I called the number on my booking voucher (the voucher only issued when a tour is booked and PAID for). They said they had no details of my booking! They said nothing they could do and a full refund would be given. No apology or suggestion of an alternative for that day only another day. Given we only had a long weekend and it was our last full day that was not possible. If you are refunding you have the details!!! The biggest issue was the waste of our time. At this point all other tour operators had departed for full day tours.
The write up for this experience is incorrect and misleading. It is not a small trip of 8 - there were 22 people on our day trip. Lunch is not included. The tour guide, while very knowledgeable, drops you at each point and you’re left to get on with it. The minibus had very small seats with very little legroom. I am a UK size 8 of average height and I felt cramped, many other fellow travellers were complaining too. I spent quite some time researching trips for this holiday and have used Viator many times before - this has been our first poor experience.
A very well organised and sucessful trip, with an excellent guide "Tony". Access to Santna was not possible as there was a Fiesta and roads closed. Timing was also good, as was the mini coach, which was in very good condition. Arranged lunch was also fine but a little rushed because of the Fiesta numbers in the restaurant.
Excellent guide Tony made our day remarkable and pleasant! Preordered lunch was very tasty . We managed to visit a lot of interesting places. Kudos to Tony!
the lunch in Santana was very good. Carlos the guide was excellent, very friendly and knowlegeable. The levada walk can be muddy, you need proper footwear. And it can be very cold at the top of Pico d'Arriero. A wonderful day out, just 7 people.
The scenery was fantastic, lunch excellent. 2 negatives however. Driver never advised us to wear seat belts and our booking said would be a small vehicle of 8 whereas one came with smaller seats for 16
Excellent Tour. Carlos our Driver and Guide was brilliant. Friendly: knowledgeable and professional. Would recommend
Our guide Mr Gama was amazing and very attentive to the whole group alot of information on the island and it's history. Would definitely recommend this tour.
The tour operator never showed up. I called them and they had no record of my reservation. I got a refund but the day was wasted as I could not book anything else. Viator should drop the tour operator.
Pickup was scheduled for 9:00 am, arrived at 8:45 and waiting until 10:00 . No one showed, wrote Viator through the contact tour operator no one responded. The concierge of hotel called Madeira Seekers with no luck got automated response . Please reimburse us for tour that did not take place
Aninformed and engaging drivee/guide with well spaced stops made foe a very pleasant day. A very minor niggle was that I found I was the only guest to have booked the included lunch.
Stunning views on this trip provided by Secret Madeira. The driver Tony was very informative and told us the history of the island as well as details of the places we visited, He also pointed out the many different plants and vegetation on the island. Lovely meal reservation at Restaurant O Colin in Santana.
Fantastic day , Carlos the tour guide was so friendly and knowledgeable. It was a full day out lunch was lovely also . Best day of our holidays , Carlos is a credit to the company Thankyou so much x
The tour guide told us the Levada walk was 45 minutes, which was a gross underestimation to go to the Balcoes and back. Consequently we had an injury trying to rush back. In future please give correct information.
This was an amazing experience. My husband and I really enjoyed it. Gamma our guide was very knowledgeable and his passion for Madeira showed through. We saw the different areas of Madeira and it is totally different to the West side. The viewing points were well spaced out and the right amount of time.
It was a great day and Michael our guide was first class. Bit cloudy when we started but really brightened up. Stunning views, interesting facts and lunch was good. So nice being in a small group too. Festival at Santana added to the day as so many people wearing traditional dress.
Tony was super fun. Loved all the stops he was very knowledgeable flora and vegetation. Have to get PONCHA at John’s. The trout farm is educational. The forests are beautiful and you are above the clouds.
Lucy was an excellent guide and kept us informed of all the sights. We were collected on time and even though we were delayed slightly nothing was left out of the tour.
We really enjoyed the trip. Michael our driver/guide gave us a real insight into the areas we travelled through. Good lunch, plenty of breaks and the rum factory was an interesting visit.
Interesting itinerary, perfect weather and excellent guide on an historic anniversary day. Enjoyed the lunch in Santana and rum factory tour afterwards., Only sorry we had to return early to our ship.
What a wonderful trip. Lucy our guide was fantastic. Her knowledge of the island was excellent. We went to what I consider to be the most beautiful areas. The stops were paced well. Our driver was extremely safe ( necessary on some roads). Highly reccomend.
Our guide was charming, informative and took us everywhere!! Lunch was good. Great value for the money
Unbelievable experience we could’ve not asked for a better guide and driver Gomes was Unbelievable So detailed oriented which was not an exp expectation from past tours of other countries Proud of his country speaks from the heart and shows the love of Madeira on his sleeve If you are doing well he walk make sure you have the right shoes Lunch and as ok not one I would recommend But let me say it again Unbelievable full day from 9 am to drop off 6 Weather although no grantees was incredible for April. Would do any tour were I would know that Gomes was our driver and tour guide incredible soul ! Thank you and muito Obrigada
Great landscape to admire. Knowledgeable guide. A nice lunch with our package. A lot packed into the whole day - although we didn’t stop at the trout farm just a glance from the van. Our only disappointment was when booking a small tour, that is the expectation.
Fantastic day driver Tony very knowledgeable and helpful. Kept us entertained between stops. Magnificent scenery. Lunch was great value included in the price would highly recommend this tour
Nice tour! Experienced and funny guide! Great lunch! Very good price/quality! We had a wonderful day!
We had a very friendly tourguide Michael. He told us a lot about Madeira. Loved all the stops. I’m glad I choose the east side tour, because this has a lot of mountain roads. The day after we hire a car and than we can drive the more save roads on the west
The guide Tony, multilingual, very hospitable and making sure we got everywhere safe with excellent driving. The cliffs on the east shore, the walks, the views it was all great! Lunch was included and really good. So we recommend this tour.
It was all pretty memorable, and not one thing stood out, but the whole experience was fantastic. I'll start with our guide, Michael, who is knowledgeable, organized, and caring. you can't beat that combination - he was amazing at every turn, patient, and kind, but easygoing and funny. The locations along the tour were at once breathtaking, historical, and beautiful. Lunch was served to us in the biggest restaurant I've seen in Madeira, think catering hall but more charming with very good food. The tour was almost too long, eight very full hours. My only problem was getting in and out of the van. A step stool would have been ideal instead of relying on Michel's arm each time we got out to sightsee.
Definitely recommend a small group tour. Driver/guide was very informative and drove very carefully on those windy roads. Highlight was the short Levada walk.
Great itinerary, beautiful stops and a very good overview of the area. Fantastic tour guide (Carlos). A 5 star tour.
Had a fabulous day touring the east side of Madeira including the traditional houses of Santana. The views were majestic. Carlos is a knowledgeable and considerate guide. The lunch was excellent!
Frendly guide, and spectacular views from Pico do Areeiro, and Pico do Facho. Interesting information and places we visited. It was nice being together with the small groupe.
I would love to give it 5 stars but we had to leave by taxi after lunch because it became too painful sitting in the far rear Childs bench seat. We are in our 60’s with bad knees so climbing in and out and being stuck knees tucked high while riding got worse after each stop. The guide was great and very informative. I just wish he took it upon himself to rearrange the seating situation seeing as everyone paid the same amount for the tour.
Lucy was an outstanding guide - she has been doing this a long time, is very knowledgeable, and organized the day well. We enjoyed our walk alongside the levadas, our visit to an original traditional Santana home, and the many views and stories of Madeira. Lucy also provided tips for a hike we took on our own the next day, which was incredibly helpful and greatly appreciated. We learned so much on this tour and I highly recommend it.
So many great stops. Time to enjoy the views, with our guide giving us a lot of factual information along the route.
We had a rainy day, but it did not spoil the experience. Our driver/ guide Tony was very funny and knew how to lift up spirit despite the weather. We had a nice local lunch and the dessert was very nice👍
We were booked onto the tour of the East but without telling us we were transferred to the West tour. And when we complained we received no reply. And no one answered the phone. Don't book with this company.
Tony was a great guide- multilingual. He covered every part punctually. Full of interesting information
The guide, Alberto, was excellent. However the bus was very squashed, the lunch did not live up to expectations ( we expected a traditional Madeira lunch with our fellow English speaking travellers, not a three course dinner for 2 that we could have got anywhere), and we were expecting a max of 8 passengers (there were 13). Not a bad day but lately redeemed by Alberto.
From start to finish Carlos our knowledgable driver was fantastic. Wow, what a tour, small, only 8 people, a very comfortable spacious minibus. Only four of us booked lunch, but what a lunch, homemade soup followed by a choice of chicken, beef, monk fish or local black fish, followed by a locally made caramel mouse, plus a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine included in the price. He took us to some beautiful places in Madeira where the big coaches couldn’t go, brilliant. For £40 a head, you WILL NOT get a better tour. Thank you Carlos for a wonderful day.🙏🙏
We enjoyed the exchange of information during the trip. From history to plants and everything in-between. We discovered many beautiful places with an awesome guide. He made the experience memorable.
We were given a good view of a number of sites around the western half of Madeira. The trip was interesting, enjoyable and informative, though I would stop short of calling it exciting. Our guide, Lucas, was friendly and made us feel cared about. The included meal wasn't outstanding, but it was generous (wine included) and well worth the extra few Euros on top of what the tour would otherwise cost.
You really see the whole east side of the island. From the second highest peak where the views are incredible to the north coast and the Forrest in between. Lots of cool history and you get to visit a local distillery where you can get a good rum to make poncha
We had one of the best tour ever. Our guide/driver Carlos was above all expectation, very good English, perfect timing on each stop for the best views and walks, a lot of information about the island, very professional attitude. The lunch was very good , thanks to Carlos when we arrived at restaurant our table was ready and lunch was already order by him. We would recommend this tour to all of our friends and advise them to ask for Carlos. Thank you very much for wonderful experience, hope to come back soon for more tours.
