My wife and I spent a thorougly entertaining day with Valdemar, who was extremely knowledgable of the history of Madeira and its flora; we didn't stop talking and shared a good sense of humour. We were only in Madeira for 4 days and it was unusually wet, so a private tour on our last day meant that Valdemar could both tailor the day to our needs and stay away from the rain in the west. Of course the landrover was able to go where no sane person would take a hire car and we visited a couple of the highest peaks, with their breath taking and peaceful scenery, and some of the eastern ports, still relatively untouched by mass tourism, enjoying much in between. Get ready to see a lot of Madeira in a personal customizable tour in a 4 X 4. Our driver, Wilson, showed us optional routes and sites on the map and then made suggestions based on our comments and interests. He knows great lookouts that are pretty private. We had great views, waterfalls, rain forest, towns, quaint roads and he took us to an amazing local place for a poncha at the end of the day before whisking us right to the ship. A great day.

What an amazing day! This was our favourite day of our trip to Madeira. Upon meeting with us, we told Val what we were interested in seeing and he catered the day to our interests. Our day was full of breathtaking views, short hikes, adventures, a few surprises, and some stops along the way that we would have never found on our own. Val was very personable, knowledgeable and accommodating throughout the full day tour. If we could give this more than a five star rating we would!

I don’t know where to begin! This all-day tour IS WONDERFUL! Val, our tour guide was beyond, beyond exceptional. He explained in great detail the history of the island and its importance in World History. Val took us to Poncha Bars and a delightful place for lunch. We were able to walk around a few small villages to look in the stores or get something to drink. We met many local residents and we were immersed in the ‘traditional’ side of Madeira, far away from our resort hotel. Lastly, the highlights of the tour were the countless beautiful views that we encountered around every turn. We went to the top of Pico de Arieiro (one of the highest points on the island) where the views were unimaginable. Thank you Val for everything!

Val=perfection. My fiance and I had the most amazing time! Val took us on such a varied adventure from off roading to a quiet hike and stopping to check out local drinks/eats for midday and lunch. The fresh Poncha was amazing! He is from the island and gave history, fun facts and recommendations for later in our short trip. Loved his laid back style,humor and willingness to share on any topic that popped up. We switched between laughter and comments of ‘that is so cool’ or ‘that is breathtaking’ the whole time. As a family of 4 with two teenagers (15 and 17 years old), we spent the day with Val. We cannot recommend him highly enough! We wanted a day exploring Madeira away from the crowds, doing quiet trails and getting amazing views (and food) and he more than delivered. Val tailored the day to us, the ups and downs of at least one slightly grumpy teenager, and provided non stop insights and knowledge of the island and its history, foliation and food. We all had an amazing time (neither teenager complained!) and arrived home after a day out tired and feeling we’d actually seen a secret Madeira (definitely recommend trying a Berlin Ball!).

I've been on a lot of tours in a lot of places (Maui, Banff, Iceland, etc) and been fortunate enough that a lot of them have been fantastic. And yet, this tour with Val was something extra special. From going out of his way to ensure we get to try out Ponchas at Bar O Vizinho (absolutely fantastic!) despite not having any Euros to an incredible lunch at Cantin De Serra catered specifically to us as vegetarians with yet another stop for a delicious glass of Ginza, Val really went all out on ensuring we had an absolute gala of a trip. This was the only tour we did on our short 2 night stay in Madeira and yet there was nothing more I could have possibly asked for from this tour. We highly recommend booking with Val and letting him plan the tour itinerary for you. You will not be disappointed!

Thank you Val for an amazing day on the east side of Madeira. We went on several excursions while in Funchal but this was by far the absolute best. Awesome day trip with Val…very accommodating and tailored to our family including a six year old. Val was very knowledgeable and extremely understanding. He saw our needs especially with a 6 year old passenger and was prepared to change the itinerary at any point.

We had the most fantastic time on this tour. Going into it, we didn’t know what to really expect but we got to see and experience some stunning parts of the island that we wouldn’t have if we’d gone with a more commercial tour. We were able to really switch off from the stresses of every day life and enjoy the day without being surrounded by other tourists. My husband said this is the best thing we have done in a long time! The guide was also so lovely, personable, and extremely knowledgable. Would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Madeira, even if it’s not your first time there. A truly unique way to explore the island and its charms.

5 stars for Val! We loved him and he really made our first day in Madeira! We wanted to do the PR1 > PR2 but the route was closed due to bad weather - which we knew would be possible but Val thought on his feet and reacted well to each part of the day! We did a beautiful walk through a valley that was protected from the weather and spent the day afterwards driving around sightseeing and learning, alot of the things were on our bucket list & we wanted to see. All day was like a school day! He is extremely knowledgeable. My partner fully enjoyed driving around open top taking in all the views. Val gave us recommendations for walks for the rest of our trip. We decided to book a private tour to see the island, and this did not disappoint! Val was brilliant, taking us to many different spots North and West of the island. We experienced so many things in one day! To name a few, we tried local poncha, dipped our feet in the sea at Seixal beach, off roading on small mountain roads and ended the day trying to conquer my fear of heights at Cabo Girão! Spending the last day of my 20s with Val exploring Madeira was the best way to end it, and will be an experience I’ll never forget! I would highly recommend anyone booking this tour!

Excellent experience!! This is a must do if you are in Maderia. Val is an amazing host and showed us so much on this tour. He even took pictures for us and sent them after the tour, a great photographer! He took us to spots that were on our list to see but he also took us to the non touristy spots and in many places, we were the only ones there which was unbelievable. If you have any hesitations in booking, I wouldn’t hesitate. This was the best day of our trip.

What an amazing tour we had with Valdemar around beautiful Madeira. We were on a cruise so basically spent our day in Val’s jeep going all over the island and also off-roading which was tremendous fun! We were four adults including my 90 year old Morher in law who rated it her favourite tour of the cruise. Valdemar is local with an in-depth knowledge of Madeira’s history, flora and fauna - I don’t think you could pose a question that would stump him! In addition to seeing so much of the island (we want to return), Val took us to a casual local place for lunch of the most delicious Madeira bread then we, of course, tasted Madeira wine and ended a tour with a Poncha (a lip smackingly good hit of rum, lemon juice and sugar). 5 stars all round!

Fantastic day with my husband and our two friends. Val is incredibly passionate about Madeira and this shone through with the knowledge he shared with us about the day and the history of the island. The wine tasting was an excellent experience, coupled with areas of the island that were less touristy - perfect for us. He also introduced us to Bolo do Caco, the amazing Madeiran sweet potato bread, with lavish garlic butter, and was able to ask for it to be made with oil for me, as I am a vegan. I have since made this at home and it will remain a favourite in our house. We would highly recommend a tour with Val if in Madeira, and we will definitely book with Val, when in Madeira again.

We've been picked up by Valdemar right at the hotel with a jeep. He drove the streets that were used by locals, so he could show us places that aren't overrun by tourists. During the tour he gave us lots of insights and information about Madeiras history, the importance of the levadas and how to safe money as a tourist. From Funchal we drove over Santa Cruz and Machico to Porto da Cruz, where we had lunch. Afterwards we had a stop at the skywalk in Faial before he drove to Pico do Areeiro, where we said goodbye. Valdemar had organised a room for us in a hut close to the peak of Pico Ruivo. We started our hike at Pico do Areeiro and it was planned that we were going to get picked up at the Café Achada do Teixeira at the next morning. We can recommend to book a personal tour at the very beginning of the holiday to get (additional) information what to visit, when and how. The hike to Pico Ruivo watching the sunset and sunrise on the very peak is wonderful regardless of the weather. Overall we had a great, informative and fun time. Everything was very well organised. Valdemar knows what to show and tell (e.g. traditional food and beverages like Poncha) and really knows his island by heart.

Our tour with Val was a bright spot in our entire trip to Portugal, not just Madeira. We started the day without any expectations, but he was able to very quickly discern what type of custom tour would be right for us. Our day was filled with great food, adventure, and conversation thanks to our wonderfully knowledgeable guide. I would recommend anyone who finds themselves in the vicinity of the island to take this tour.

We spent two very full, fabulous days with Valdemar. We originally booked his Sunrise at the Summit Tour (which was an amazing almost 10 hour experience) and then followed it up a few days later with his “Surprise us” Tour. Valdemar is incredibly perceptive and attentive to the needs of his clients. He does a great job of learning about what is important to his clients and then designs a trip (on the fly in some cases) that perfectly suits their needs! We loved touring in his open-top Jeep all around Madeira. He centered our second tour around the 25 Fountains Levada walk (which was our number one item to see). He picked us up super early and took us to a less-known entry (through a very long tunnel no less which was super cool) so that we could get to the Fountains before most other tourists. He took us on roads (that should not be classified as roads) which were a little scary at times but we had total confidence in his driving skills. We were definitely on the roads less travelled which gave us opportunities to stand up while cruising the back/off-roads and we were able to get amazing photos. We saw stunning waterfalls, coastlines, mountains, walked some great trails, ate some native fruits, drank some authentic poncho and had an overall great time. Valdemar has so much knowledge to share about his island—we learned a lot and got amazing photos so we can always remember our great week in Medeira. I have already recommended Valdemar to many of my friends and would definitely tour with him again should we ever return to Madeira!

We had a full day tour with Valdemar (´go local tours´) who showed us a significant part of the island in a funny 4x4 car which provides an ´open roof´for the guests to be able to stand up and enjoy the scenery. Throughout the day we stopped as well at different locations to enjoy local fruits and snacks - and he introduced us to one of the best ´poncha´bars of Madeira. Valdemar is very knowledgeable and he shows you a lot of hidden secrets off the beaten track. He speaks excellent English and reasonable German (in addition to Portuguese, Spanish and French which we couldn´t verify).
