We were collected from our hotel Pestana Grand exactly on the time we were told at 8.00am We were courteously greeted by Elton, who was our driver and guide combined. And what a quality guy he was. Full of useful information and with a tremendous knowledge of the flora and fauna of the area. Overall the day was very enjoyable, with only having a small group of 14 it made it easier for Elton to communicate, which he excelled at. An excellent levada walk all round complimented with an excellent guide.

Brilliant from start to finish! Sofia in the office was very helpful, listening to our needs and recommended the most suitable tours. Everything was very straight forward, from payment to pick up. Our guide Maria was lovely. The walk was perfect for us, as it was mostly sheltered and cool. Maria also took time to answer questions and tell us interesting facys about Madeira and the native species and wildlife. Great trip! Obrigada!
We did two walks during our stay in Madeira: Kings Levada with Susanna and 25 fountains with Elton. Both were excellent walks. Both guides were helpful and knowledgable with lots of interesting information about the island and all its flora and fauna. They kept a sensible pace for the group and ensured our safety - low branches , slippery areas and narrow paths. I would definitely book again on our next trip to Madeira.
We decided to book a levada walk with "Madeira Free Spirit Walks" company after reading great reviews both on Google as well as TripAdvisor. And we had a fantastic experience today walking along the King's levada PR18. Pick up was nice and early and punctual at 8.10am. Drive to the start of the walk was safe and smooth with our guide Alvaro and driver Gorge. Alvaro's fabulous sense of humour is something to be mentioned as it served so well as an ice-breaker and all throughout the walk to keep everyone's spirits high and remind of few safety rules along the way. The walk was not rushed, with frequent stops allowing the slower walking participants to catch up and listen to lots of interesting information about the different plants, trees, birds and history. We returned to our hotel at about 4pm so it truly felt like a full day outing. Highly recommended and we'd definitely book another walk with them. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
We had a wonderful time on our levada hike with Maria - she was a friendly, engaged and knowledgeable guide, and our seven-year-old daughter absolutely loved her [and has already requested that we go back to Madeira so we can go on more hikes with Maria]. The hike was easy enough, and well paced considering the terrain - there was no incline, but the path is quite narrow in parts. Maria set a good pace that made it easy for the group to stay together [our daughter is an experienced hiker and would have run ahead if we'd let her, but Maria did a great job of gauging energy levels and keeping a bit in reserve for the return journey], and knew so much about the flora, fauna and history of the walk - it never felt like we were there to just get to the spring and tick the box; we got to really experience this beautiful levada! Thank you so much to Maria and our driver - we hope to see you again when we come back!
We had Alvaro who was both our driver and our guide. Very engaging and experienced and we felt we were in good hands.
Very well organised with an excellent guide who gave most interesting information during the walk. Can highly recommend.
Alvaro was an excellent tour guide and had lots of interesting facts that he shared during our walk. We really enjoyed the hike and will absolutely try one of the other trips the next time we come to Madeira. The Walk it selv was quite flat and you’d have to siffer from severe vertigo or be in really bad shape if you have trouble with this Walk.
A day trip where we expected more. For a regular walker there is not much to challenge you. The scenery is random when the weather is poor, but that could a off-season problem? Like the rest of the Island there is not a lot of wildlife but the engineering of the levada remains impressive even if this particular walk is underwhelming. Shame really.
An easy, green route with voluptuous vegetation and some springs. The levadas present trouts swimming around! Suits for all people who like walking.
We had a fantastic day tour to Kings Levada with Alvaro - from start to finish everything was excellent. Pick up from our hotel was exactly on time and the journey from Funchal was about 45 minutes to Sao Jorge. We had some time before the start of the walk for a quick coffee and toilet stop, before starting the levada walk. It was raining when we started so we were very grateful for the use of Alvaro’s spare waterproof coats! Next time in Madeira we will pack our waterproofs! Along the walk Alvaro told us about local plants and wildlife, as well as ensuring we were safe and having a good time. It is 5.7km to the source of the levada where we had a stop for lunch (bring a drink and snack with you or buy from the cafe at the start), before heading back. It is about 4 hours walking in total and although fairly flat you do need to be fit.
Excellent day with Alvaro, our guide. His guiding was brilliant, even for my partner who "doesn't do guided trips". He was funny and informative in just the right amount. The walk was very enjoyable. Thank you.
We booked two all day hikes with 'Madeira Free Spirit Walks' and really enjoyed ourselves. The team are very professional and friendly and made us feel welcome. The mini-bus picked us up from our hotel and took care of everything. Our guides Philip and Suzanne were very knowledgeable and spent a great deal of time explaining and pointing out the local history, geology and flora and fauna. Both our guides were extremely attentive and really ensured that all of the group were enjoying themselves. We had a child with us and again both guides worked hard to ensure that our son was engaged. What a brilliant family run business and an excellent service. Of course, it goes without saying that the scenery was outstanding and extremely beautiful.
Excellent guide and good company. We have been on many guided walks in many countries and Susannah is the most friendly, helpful and knowledgeable guide we have come across
We were picked up from our hotel in Funchal, in the south and driven by, our guide for the day, Alvaro to the north of the island to walk the King’s Levada. Giving us commentary all the way he imparted lots of information in a friendly and often amusing way about the island’s weather, the roads and history. His wealth of knowledge about the levadas, the plants and birds made the day so enjoyable. His 38 years of experience of guiding walks on Madeira made him a super guide and as he said himself he knows every step on the island. One of our small group promptly booked to go on another tour the following day having enjoyed it so much!
We had an amizing time! The walk was great and super easy but what made it amazing was the guide. He was funny and very informative at the same time! You could tell that he loved his job. He explained everything and we even got to taste some herbs.
The best experience We've ever had. Our guide Alvero was THE BEST GUIDE EVER!! He was funny knowledgeable and overall a great person. We had
Great company with eye for detail. Felt safe with a knowledgeable guide. We went on a further walk with them as we were so pleased. Suzanna was very informative.
We booked our walk through the resort we were staying at, and had a really enjoyable experience! Alvaro was great, very knowledgable and cracking sense of humour! Will definitely book and request him when we come back! The walk was beautiful, and reasonably flat. Was a bit muddy, so you do need to consider footwear. The cafe/bar at the beginning/end had lovely desserts, a plethora of beer, ciders, etc and hot beverages - so definitely have a short visit there too!
We did 2 tours with madeira free spirit, both were perfectly organized. It was a great pleasure walking with the guide and the other guests. Thank you
I went in a group of 8-10 participants and our highly knowledgeable guide Suzana. She knows a lot about the area, nature and the people who live there. In addition, she is very linguistic and switches rapidly between French and English. It was a lovely trip - worth all the money.
In a small group the 10 km were easy to do, it was good to walk as they were mostly comfortable paths, but sometimes it was very narrow and went steeply down next to the path, you should be reasonably dizzy already. Be sure to take a rain jacket with you, as it can get very wet at the waterfall. Our guide knew a lot about flora and fauna and about the history, and there was enough time for photos on the way. I also enjoyed the fact that we were able to go a bit for ourselves at our own pace. Nature smelled wonderful and it was really a very nice and interesting hike.
