The tour was brilliantly led by Daniel who is really knowledgable about so many aspects of Madeira’s culture, history and geography. The tour itself was really beautiful and picturesque but Daniel’s commentary and additions really made it. What a great way to see a bit more of the “real” Madeira - would really recommend this tour.

Via Costa Cruises we booked the 4x4 ride trough nature of Madeira. When we docked in Funchal a week ago, a group of good looking, tough Land Rovers of Discovery Island Madeira was waiting for us down by the ship. Me and my 3 friends were lucky to have Jesus as our driver, also guide. Madeira is his island of birth so he knows so much about it’s nature and culture, it’s past and present. He is a really good, experienced driver, has a lot of humor and a nice vibe. He made our day. During the drive we made several stops. Among others at a fishing village, a spot with a good view over a beautiful, sooting valley and a local bar to drink the traditional cocktail of Madeira, “poncha” We had such a good time and a very nice impression of Madeira. We highly recommend this 4x4 ride.
Daniel was a brilliant guide and careful driver. Ha navigated the tour busses to find us suitable parking spots for great photos and answered all our questions. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day.
We spent half a day in Madeira on a 4x4 jeep tour, from the cruise ship port. We were collect from right outside the ship and set off on our tour straight away. We shared the jeep with one couple, so a total of 5 adults, plenty of space. Jesus, was our driver and tour guide - he was AMAZING. His knowledge of the tour and general humour was brilliant. We made five stops on this tour, with plenty of time at each. We stopped at a local fishing village; very picturesque, the Nuns Valley; what a photo opportunity, a view point of the city and a drinks stop; very reasonably priced! We would highly recommend booking with this company.
We stayed one week with Vitus travel. The Jeep Safari was the best experience during the whole week. Mostly because we got Jesus as our driver. He made the day.
Our driver Jesus was fab! Gave lots of info and extremely attentive to all. I certainly hope we have him as the driver on another tour in the future! The route was ideal. Seeing areas we would not have seen on a mini bus! Good variety of terrain -LOVED this tour.

We Loved it! My husband and I saved this excursion for our last day in Madeira. We had spent most of our time in Funchal and being able to go up into the mountains and explore all the other pockets of this incredible island were breathtaking. We shared a jeep with a family from Spain, so kind and our guide was informative and a passionate local, you could really feel his pride for this island. Beautiful! I used to live in San Francisco and those hills are nothing compared to Madeira, had a blast going up and down. We stopped at several places to take photos and relish in the views. My favorite was the valley of the nuns, sounds like the best band name. The story behind them was inspiring to hear. Also you get to try the Portugal drink Pancha, it’s one of a kind, and Nikita, like a passionfruit creamsicle with ice cream, Bar Mario had the best! If you’re in Madeira for a week or a couple days, I highly recommend! Also they pick you up and drop you off at your hotel! 5 stars! Thank you! We will be back! Nicholas & Workman
We took the 4x4 tour with couple of friends. We had a great time touring the island. Stop several times to get out for pictures. We were unaware of Madeira being mountainous we climbed about 3500 feet. The roads are extremely steep. We were told they are up to 27degrees. We stopped at a little store and had poncha. They made a patch for the 4 of us. Best poncha we had on the island. We then stopped at Cabo girao a glass floored lookout about 1000 feet off the ocean
Our tour guide Gil was informative and friendly, and an expert driver! He gave us lots of useful information about the island - he is clearly very proud of his birthplace. Highly recommend.
Amazing trip. We were picked up by Eugenio in town and started the tour. We stop at a fishing village had time to walk around. We then took off up the hills. This hills were up to 27% grade. We stopped several times as we were going into the Valley of the Nuns. The views were incredible. We then went 4 wheeling for a while and ended up in a small cross roads and we stopped to try authentic Poncha. Our next stop was at Cabo Girao. The tour hit several of me punch list items for Madeira. Highly recommend the tour

So we arrived here in Madeira,Funchal almost around noon and this place is beautiful! And since this is our 1st time here..Me and my wife decided to do the Sunset Tour being offered by DiscoveryIsland..and it was amazing great experience even though we wasn’t able to see the sunset because it was too cloudy that day the trip was still amazing especially if you’ll have Carlos as your driver/guide..he makes the trip fun and very interesting..Carlos was a cool dude and very helpful and a really good driver. So all in all it was a really good day for me and my wife! Thanks again Carlos!

We were a group of 12 from Estonia and had Carlos and Francisco as our drivers and guides. If you want your tour to go smoothly with great banter, jokes and best atmosphere, they will deliver 100%. They drive like absolute pros, are very helpful in case there’s any questions or problems and we enjoyed our trip at the fullest!
Eugénio was a wonderfully friendly host for this fun trip out. He told us lots of interesting things about the area and some personal background too. The poncho stop nearly blew our socks off and was a great nerve steadier after the off road section. All in all a lovely way to see the real island away from the resorts.

The half-day jeep tour with Discovery Island was absolutely worth it. The guide Daniel was one of the best we could ever experience worldwide - good mood, communicative and very well informed.
We booked the tour in Spanish and when we were picked up from the hotel, two French couples came, the driver-guide simply explained the whole tour in French although we told him that we did not understand the language. Some questions we asked you answered in Spanish. At the end of the tour we tried to convince ourselves to return to the hotel taking a walk along the coast, in about 30 degrees heat, and that according to the only one we would take 25 minutes, when in fact it was about two hours.
Well organized trip. We had Gil as our driver. He told us in English (at a leisurely pace) a lot of details about the island. Also with a good dose of humor. Especially the bit off-road was spectacular. All in all a successful excursion. Hats off to the boys at Discovery Island Madeira.

Very nice, entertaining tour and very entertaining driver. The steep roads around Funchal are really an experience if you come from the flat country like me. Physical fitness not required.
