Itinerary
Day tour to the beautiful city of Heidelberg, this historically old city on the Neckar is visited by millions of visitors from all over the world every year. After about 1 hour drive there we will visit Heidelberg Castle. In our tour we will show you the famous castle from Heidelberg, which has a historical history. The whole structure, the castle and the courtyard impress with their ruins and construction. The castle is several centuries old and offers a wonderful view over the city from its huge terrace. Here you are looking at one of the largest wine barrels in the world.
After visiting the castle we walk through the medieval center to the old bridge and the Karlstor, the Renaissance house to the knight, the Heiliggeistkirche. We drive about 1 hour back to the meeting point.

A perfect day trip from Frankfurt. The castle was beautiful and time for lunch (and chocolate!) in the old city was fun. The small group size was relaxed and having the driving, admissions, etc taken care of by our guide was very helpful. Highly recommend!
Nice small fan, great destination but the best was our tour guide. He certainly made the tour unforgettable with his wealth of knowledge that he was sharing during the ride and at the castle. It is great to be with someone who has a passion and loves what he does. I can only go up to 5 stars but would give him a 10. My 88 year old mother really like it too!
Heidelberg is a classic European Town with a main walking street that is super cute. We walked around town on our own. There was time for lunch or shopping. The castle is a ruin with some interesting history. Michael brought the past into the present as he gave us a thorough history lesson.
Fun tour, guide provided a lot of historical information that was interesting. Lots of time on own to explore old Heidelberg.
Our guide was very informative and knowledgeable about the History of the Place - not your typical tour guide. This guy is a historian!
Very nice and informative , I really enjoyed and appreciate this tour , thanks for the support from the guides
Very educational as the tour guide shared lots of history and knowledge. He explained clearly important information about the places we visited
Our guide was a 10/10. Extremely knowledgeable and fun trip. His way of teaching us about the history and allowing us to explore and learn things on our own was perfect. We can't wait to come back!
Michael is a wonderful tour guide full of knowledge, facts and a great sense of humor. He kept us on schedule and still gave us time to wander through the town. He suggested the best restaurant and you must get a sweet from Grundel’s! At the castle I could really see the difference between our tour snd how lame the others were. Glad I picked Viator and got Michael.
Mike the guide was in great rush, did not explain properly, did not have a mike so difficult to understand unless you are close to him. Felt rushed. There were other guides doing a better job than him. Very disappointed. Heidelberg is worth a visit but avoid this tour.
Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and helpful! He made the trip a wonderful experience. He was a great driver and navigated some very narrow roads with impressive skill. I would recommend Michael to anyone.
Waste of money at least the way we saw it. There were 13 of us split in two vans. The tour guide was in one van and we were in the other van. The driver in our van had the guide on his phone. The audio was bad and the folks in the rear could not hear much. The castle was not really worth seeing we went inside couple of places. In the town we were asked to explore on our own.
Great tour! Michael is an encyclopedia of knowledge about all the history and kept us informed and engaged the whole trip.
Michael our guide made the entire experience. He was great. Would travel around with him again. Very knowledgeable and accommodating
Michael was a walking history lesson. He used the time we were driving to Heidelberg to walk us through the history of Germany from pre-Roman times. He was extremely knowledgeable and made for a fascinating morning. He easily answered questions and made sure we had time to explore. He was very friendly and personable. We would have taken an extended tour if available.
Great Tour, great location for meeting point near Hauptbahnhof. Great Guide & history of the area & castle
It is a wonderful day trip with an excellent tour guide. I would recommend this for adults, but I think children might not enjoy it.
Our guide Michael is very knowledgeable and professional, I really enjoyed the tour, Highly recommended!
It was great. Wish there was longer time in Heidelberg. The tour guide was wonderful and knew his history extremely well. He spoke on the drive to the city and then gave us bathroom time before starting the tour.
Guide was very informative. He gave us a history lesson on the way to the castle and the history of the important parts and figures etc. in the castle. We had time in the city of Heidelberg too and were able to go over the pedestrian bridge to see the river views. The castle has the world’s largest wine barrels on display. Excellent tour.
Our guide was excellent; punctual, friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. The transport vehicle was spacious and comfortable. We were short on time in Frankfurt so the half day tour suited us perfectly.
Great experience, Mr Gunther was extremely welcoming and great guide for the tour. Great way for tourists to experience the castle.
The tour was amazing. Guntor is so knowledgeable on the history! We learned so much! The castle is very beautiful and the area we went shopping and for lunch was very nice. Highly recommend this trip!
Great tour with Gunter as our guide. He shared all of the history of the Heidelberg Castle and was very pleasant the entire day. Everyone should see this place if you are in the area for sure!
Great tour, guide was knowledgeable and loved the castle and small group tour!! The pharmacy museum there was fascinating, especially for a retired pharmacist.
Wonderful experience with a considerate and knowledgeable guide. The castle did not disappoint and the river views were exceptional.
I loved hearing about the history of the region and the castle, but was pretty disappointed that the city tour portion was just being dropped in the town square and told “okay meet back here in an hour.” Heidelberg is SUCH a beautiful city and I wish I had been shown some of the best spots. If the castle is the only “tour” portion, it shouldn’t be called a city tour since we weren’t given a tour of the city itself.
Beautiful, historic castle. Knowledgeable guide. Wonderful excursion!
the tour guide was quite knowledgeable about the subject matter and related relevant historical facts. the trip itself was quite comfortable and the castle itself didn't disappoint
A must do tour especially if you like earlier German history. Also, Frankfurt is nice, but there’s so much German influence that comes from the surrounding region (as explained by our awesome tour guide)
Our Tour Guide Michael was extremely knowledgeable, very helpful, and really made the Tour one to remember for a lifetime! At one point, I lost my phone in Heidelberg Castle and he jumped in and saved not just the tour but my entire European vacation by finding it, and the tour continued perfectly on time. I am a major history buff, and found his references and deep knowledge to be what set this Tour apart from the rest. Mikhael is a master!
We took this tour on Aug 22nd and our tour Guide was Michael and we really enjoyed it.Michael was so knowledgeable and gave us all the historical background of Germany and Heidelberg. The castle , the bridge and the town are well worth a visit
Michael was a very experienced tour guide with a wrealth of historial knowledge and many stories. Could have stayed longer, one of the best tours I have ever experienced. 😊
Michael was very friendly and knowledgeable. He supplied us with lots of interesting facts and history. We had an enjoyable day of adventure
Located about 100 meters up from the north side of Heidelberg. Once reached, it provides a magnificent view of the old town and the Neckar river. We took the funicular railway to reach the castle and it was a convenient and speedy way to get there. Once there, this Castle was a gem of a find. First built back in the early 1200s, it went through devastating time effected by natural disasters and wars. However, this magnificent Renaissance structure, lived to be rescued and was partially rebuilt in 1893. Once at the site, the Castle meanders you to former times and presents one with greatness that once was enjoyed by former kings. Within the Castle one can enjoy snacks at a well situated cafe and other kiosks. Well worth the visit without a doubt.
If you get lucky enough to get a driver with fantastic personality, charm charisma, and the willingness to make your day special, that’s what I got with a gentleman named Michael from Italia Abruzzo, he was truly amazing
The Heidelberg Castle and Day Tour was great especially due to our tour guide Micheal he is so amazing!! If you love learning the history not only of the castle and Heidelberg but of Germany Micheal is your guy. He is so personable and really gives a wealth of knowledge for history lovers! He is also just a really nice gentleman and is a great guide.
The castle and city were very beautiful. Michael, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and interesting to listen to
Heidelberg is a lovely town to visit with an interesting castle complex containing among other things, the world's largest wine barrel! A great day trip from Frankfurt. Cute town to wander around. I only wish we had more time to see the town. Overall, a lovely experience.
Heidelberg Castle is a delightful place, and spending a day there is an exceptional experience. The cable car ride is a great experience, and taking photos from the top of the castle is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
I was disappointed that we didn’t go inside the castle. Since the main title is “Heidelberg Castle…” it’s deceiving not to go inside. Our guide knew a great deal of history but literally held us back from exploring so he could tell us details.
Fun and informative tour! Completely enjoyed hearing the history of Heidelberg and seeing the castle and old town
Michael the driver/guide was amazing, the minivan is very comfortable and the driving time is around an hour to get to the castle. Heidelberg Castle is an incredible piece of history and the town is transporting you to another time. On the other hand , the time is not enough to explore and investigate all the things that you want to see. Michael try to accommodate you according with you wishes and the time frame of the tour. Overall this is an excellent excursion.
Our guide Michael was excellent. Personable, passionate about history and extremely knowledgeable. I just wish we had more time to explore the castle and the surrounding grounds
From the booking that was very convenient to the pick-up and drop off, everything went well. The guides were very informative and friendly. I would have liked more time at the castle, so a full day tour would have probably been better for me, but the time at the city was great too. The massive wine barrel is not to be missed.
Our tour guide Michael was great!! He provided us with great detail and insight about the ancient, post-WW2 and current history of Heidelberg - and did so in a thoughtful and humorous manner. My partner and I really enjoyed the tour and would recommend Michael without reservation. Thanks Michael!
We really enjoyed the Heidelberg Castle and City Day Tour from Frankfurt with Michael and Stefan. The highlight of the day for us was definitely the beautiful Old Town of Heidelberg, which was charming and well worth visiting. The castle itself was very interesting, but we felt the guided portion could have been structured differently. Michael was very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the history, but he spent much of our 1½ hours at the castle giving detailed explanations in the main square, focusing on the statues and historical background. While the information was interesting, there was simply too much to absorb, and it left very little time to explore the castle ourselves. We especially wanted to visit the wine cellar and spend more time enjoying the panoramic views, but by the time the tour finished, we found ourselves rushing through these areas just to make it back to the van on time. We would recommend shortening the guided commentary to around 20 minutes, covering the key historical highlights, or providing a fact sheet or handout that guests can read at their own pace. This would leave more time for independent exploration, as different people are naturally interested in different parts of the castle. Overall, it was a very enjoyable day, and we appreciated both Michael’s knowledge and Stefan’s driving. With a little more free time at the castle, the experience would have been even better.
Michael is very knowledgeable about the history of the castle and he is also funny. I will definitely recommend this tour to my family and friends.
Our guide Michael was very knowledgeable with dates and history but after about an hour, I found myself losing interest because it was too much. I recommend keeping it a little less academic. I thought the castle tour was a bit underwhelming; frankly not much to see. The wine cellar where you can get a glass of wine and the pharmacy museum were the highlights. The old town below the castle is charming and we spent just enough time there (1.5 hrs).
