Itinerary
Explore Shell Key Preserve, located in the mouth of Tampa Bay, a 195 acre barrier Island. You will experience beautiful, calm and protected back bay waters and spot dolphins, seabirds, manatees and other wildlife on the trip.
The "Pass", as locals refer to it, was created by a hurricane on September 27, 1848. A pirate, John Levique, made the first passage through the newly created pass. Hence the name, Johns Pass. Over one hundred merchants with unique retail shopping, a variety of restaurants and local tour operators.
Often referred to as “Mad Beach” by the locals, this beach hosts soft, white sand and is a great place to spot dolphins.

Such a lovely activity they did their best to accommodate everybody’s needs and we even got to see dolphins on a ride home!
Great experience for our family. Troy, Bray Lynn and can’t remember the other girls name, they were awesome. Bray Lynn made us all a shell necklace. We saw a pod of dolphins. They had plenty of knowledge about the houses and the area. We all enjoyed it tremendously.
Excellent experience. The crew were great .Very knowledgeable. Cared a lot about the passengers. Interaction with the people were great!!!
We had a great time. Island was beautiful and there were tons of shells, including some large bivalves. A great day! The boat driver and assistant were very nice and competent. We definitely weren't rushed.
The boat trip out was great. We spotted several dolphin families and our captain stopped to let us all enjoy the show. The dolphins were jumping and playing and lots of us got great pictures. We learned a lot about the area as we traveled to the island. Refreshments were reasonably priced and the time on the island was great. We all came back with shells and we even got complimentary jewlery made. It was also nice to have access to a restroom during the travel and while on the island. The crew was friendly and very helpful. This is my third Hubbard experience and I have enjoyed them all. It is nice to have a day planned where you can do Something you cannot at home in Indiana.
first of all, the captain/guides were amazing! they were fun, funny, and great for kids! they helped keep my 1 y/o daughter entertained and she thankfully had no troubles! we saw dolphins a few times and found some good shells! they have some shells there on the boat you can take if you like and they even make necklaces out of a nice shell you found if you want!
This was the best time we have had in Florida to date. The crew was funny and friendly. The boat was safe and clean. The music was excellent not too loud. The time on show Beach was priceless. And what we paid for this day was well worth every penny. And I have to say it's the least amount of money that we spend on any Venture in Florida. We will be back and that's a promise. 10 Stars
Phenomenal experience! Captain Mike and Brandy were wonderful. Extremely knowledgeable and accommodating and genuinely wanted to give us all the best experience possible. We’ll most certainly be returning for another experience. From buying tickets, checking in, the experience, and getting off the boat, flawless experience.
Amazing time.. Robin and the captain was amazing and the best part was seeing sole dolphins and making free necklace out of 🐚
We had an amazing time! We got to see dolphins and our captain kept stopping and letting us see them and telling us info about the dolphins and the babies. We found some amazing shells on the island, the water was amazing and clear. The boat ride was relaxing and they played some really good music! Very fun captain and team and just overall worth the money
We went to a beautiful beach to find shells and dove for sand dollars. Jess and Capt Mike did a great job, thank you Jess and Mike!
Mike and Jessica were the best hosts. Saw dolphins on the way out and back. Shelling would have been better at low tide.
We did a tour through dolphins landing. Not only did the captain and his partner take us to shell island, we also did some dolphin and manatee watching 🐬😊 They provided cold water and soft drinks on the boat. There were only 9 people including us so it was a semi private tour. We were at shell island for 2 hours. You do have to go out a bit to find some bigger shells. However it is still really nice to stay close to shore. We did bring snorkel equipment and were able to get some beautiful shells pretty close. We saw a couple of manatees at shell island and 3 LARGE sting rays. There are no bathrooms, drinks or food so prepare ahead of time. I highly recommend this excursion. It is nice to get out and see what beauty the gulf has to offer ☀️⛱️
It was great! Shelling was amazing, found so many sand dollars! Beach area was as beautiful and saw a few manatees!!!
We had a great afternoon. Captain Robin, and 1st mate Kristen, were knowledgeable, fun and interacted with everyone in the boat making for a fun and informative ride to and from the beach. Everyone found beautiful seashells and enjoyed the warm ocean waters. 1st make, Kristen made all passengers who wanted a necklace using one of each passengers newly found sea shell.
I am so glad we came across this trip as things to do. I have three kids one being almost 2. The boat ride to shell island was lovely. And when we arrived we weren’t disappointed. My son who is 9 found countless sand dollars which he was excited about! And we collected so many shells and spent the rest of the time swimming around in the ocean. On the way back we seen dolphins. The staff was very funny and they made shell necklaces for whoever wanted one. If you have a toddler, I’d bring floaties or life jacket vest. Highly recommend bringing goggles for diving in the water looking for shells. I’d bring a mesh bag to put the shells in, unless you wanna purchase one from them for 4$. Which is reasonably priced. And definitely came in handy. Some ppl found some massive shells. Over all the trip was amazing. And something we’ll do again in the future.
Great crew! We had about 1.5 hrs at the beach for shelling. Wear swimsuits and bring goggles or snorkel masks. We found many sand dollars and conch shells! Park at the parking garage and get tickets validated for $7.50 at check in. Drinks and snacks available aboard for very reasonable prices. On the way back Jess will make you a necklace from one of your favorite small shells. Very smooth ride out and we saw a few dolphins.
A++ from beginning to end - from the minute you check in to the minute you get off the boat, the crew puts you and your family’s fun and comfort first. Jessica and the Captain could not have been better. Fantastic trip.
It's always great, we do this every time we are here. I found some really cool shells today, even though the water was a tad rough. Always with the trip
The captain and first mate, Robin and Jessica, were fantastic! They were Entertaining, but safe. We got to see several dolphins during the tour.
Great experience, the captain and crew were wonderful! Great guided tour and we saw dolphins and a stingray jump out of the water. Once at shell island we found a lot of shells! Best trip we've been on in Florida and I've been coming here for 30 years!
Our captains were so very kind and informative!! We saw plenty of dolphins and got several small and medium shells of all shapes without going into the water!! Those who got into the water found bigger shells and sand dollars.
Our trip was led by Captain Mike and First Mate Jessica. This has to be the best boat trip our family has ever been on. We had been on a dolphin trip in Clearwater a couple of days before and were disappointed to only see a couple of dolphins at a distance. The focus of this trip was not dolphins, however we saw a pod of dolphins and more who were very playful. We were also lucky enough to see a calf born on the way back to John’s Pass. The staff on board were amazing, great fun and very knowledgeable. Captain Mike stopped to allow us time to view and take photos of the dolphins. Who knew shell collecting was a competitive sport?! Upon arrival people sprinted off the boat, constantly overtaking each other to get to the best shells first. We managed to fill a carrier bag full of the most amazing shells as well as enjoying time in the clear blue water. The views from and on Shell Island are amazing. On the journey back Jessica offered to make everyone a necklace with their favourite shell. What a great touch! Thankyou for such an amazing trip.
Great captain and first mate. Please note you have to check in at the desk inside Hubbard's Marina to get your boarding pass. They will also validate your parking garage ticket so you pay a cheaper rate.
Its a 3 hour excursion. 45 minutes to the island 45 minutes back. The rest of the time is at the island. The crew was great. The captain stopped so we could see the dolphins. There was a pod with mamas and babies. So we definitely got our money's worth
Incredible from start to finish! We try to do some kind of ride every year. Will definitely do this again. Such a great energy on the boat. Mike and Jess were the best! The goal was to get shells, which we got an abundance of....but it was so much more! The captain took time for us to see dolphins. The weather was perfect, a manatee swam by about 10 feet away. Overall great experience!
Capt Mike and 1st Mate Kyle were awesome! Thank you for a great trip!
The weather wasn't the best - overcast and slightly rainy, but the guides made the experience so good that we forgot about the weather. The shells were tremendous. No need to go to Sanabel Island, just schedule with Hubbard's Marina and go to Shell Key Beach!!!
Great experience, very friendly captains and staff! Collin and Mike were our captains and were funny and knowledgeable about the area. We had a great time and found lots of shells and even a sand dollar. Also spotted dolphins and lots of pelicans on the trip. Definitely recommend adding to your trip plans!
That it is not a dolphin tour it's a shell island swimming snorkeling shore walking visit sometimes wild ocean life can be seen and sometimes the tide is high It was a great trip the captains were funny knowledgeable and very helpful a and accommodating
Great multi generational boat tour. Captain Mike and First mate Jess were great. Saw dolphins on the way to Shell Island. Making necklaces out of the shells the grand kids picked up was a nice surprise and the highlight of the trip.
Great trip! Our 6 year-old, 4 year-old and 2 year-old totally enjoyed themselves. Mike and Jess went overboard to make this trip great.
Great crew! We had a fantastic time. We saw dolphins and had about 1.5 hours to go shelling. It’s also nice you can come and go on the boat while docked.
Crew was friendly & informative. Boat had bathrooms & snacks. We even got a free necklace made from a shell we found.
This was incredible! Do not hesitate to book this Shell cruise! My daughters and I had the best time and found so many incredible shells! The crew was so nice and friendly! We had the best day!
We had a great time! Mike and Brandy were an awesome crew! Kids found a ton of sea shells saw a manatee up close and dolphins! Great family fun!
Fun crew, scenic boat ride, nice shells on Shell Key. Saw some dolphins! Snacks and drinks available for purchase. Good time for families!
Great fun from the minute we boarded the boat. Knowledgeable crew who who super helpful and friendly. Thanks to Mike and Kyle.
This was a very fun trip! The boat captain and mate were very knowledgeable and entertaining. It was safe and well worth the money! I would do it again.
The experience was great. The captains were all super funny and cracking jokes as much as they could with keeping it professional.
It's about an hour ride to the island, and an hour back. So, the shelling time is about an hour long. The boat ride is just as enjoyable- lots of sites to see and the crew tells you fun facts along the way. Robin and Collin were great! Was a very fun trip, and would do it again! We saw dolphins and even a manatee!
Robin and Collin are so friendly and fun. The tide was smooth (for those that get motion sickness). The fun facts and history was interesting and appreciated . The music was excellent!! We saw manatee and dolphins on our trip back to dock. We would definitely do this again.
This was a great time! Went with several friends and had a good time. Robin was a wonderful hostess. We will do again.
The Driver of the boat was very informative and allowed us to view the dolphins swimming around us. The shell key was perfect place to hang out for an hour in the water and got lots of shells too
Fun, friendly, knowledgeable crew. We had a great time. Don’t expect a secluded island. Beautiful shells collected for another amazing beach trip.
Very nice area that we shell at. Found a lot of nice shells. Captains were very friendly, knowledgeable and funny. Beware that if you are at the front of the boat on a windy day you will get kissed by some salt water. Overall had a great experience. Would try again!
The boat cruise was so much fun! We had to travel through the inter coastal waters because the ocean was very choppy. It was about an hour to get to shell key and on the way we learned all about the houses, saw dolphins and other wildlife. We spent an hour at shell key, which was calm waters with plenty of neat shells and wildlife. Back on the boat, the crew made necklaces out of our favorite shell! The company has many other cruises too, we will book again! Also, you can book directly through their website too.
Hubbard Marina was awesome! They were friendly, helpful, etc! Shelling was good but did find a lot of the same or better shells on the beach I was at. However, they mentioned they do a shark tooth tour - so I may try that next!
The trip too short for the money we paid . 2 hours in the island will be much better . One hour not enough to see everything and have a little fun .
