Itinerary
To start your incredible journey, an expert private driver will pick you up directly from your accommodation in Florence in a luxury Mercedes Benz vehicle. Enjoy the comfort of private transportation as you admire lovely views throughout the Tuscan countryside heading south, passing the regional border into Umbria. The drive to the small, hilltop town of Assisi will take about two hours.
Your driver will drop you off in the mesmerizing town of Assisi, filled with white buildings overlooking the green, picturesque valley below. This town is known as one of the most sacred places in Italy, as it is the home of Saint Francis and Saint Clare. You will have plenty of free time to independently explore the natural beauty and medieval alleyways of the city. Take a step back in time as you explore the ancient architecture and walk down the same cobblestone streets in which Saint Francis walked generations ago. This town has a special aura in the air, and there is so much to be discovered! The ancient churches of Assisi are among the most sacred in Italy, and extremely rich in history and culture. Must-sees while you are visiting Assisi include: Basilica di Santa Chiara, Basilica di San Francesco, and Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli.
Basilica di Santa Chiara is dedicated to Saint Clare, and it is an extremely religious site in Italy. Outside of the Basilica, you will find interestingly colored materials - the church is decorated in white and pink striped marble from a mountain near Assisi. The belltower is the tallest in Assisi. However, inside the church, there is an unexpected emptiness - the church has only one aisle. Once decorated by intricate frescoes, these were all lost through time. Beneath the church, you can find the tomb of Saint Clare. For a woman who helped and influenced so many, this Basilica is a beautiful memorial.
Basilica di San Francesco is one of the most important religious sites in the entire country of Italy. Not only is it the oldest Gothic church throughout the country, but it is also built above the tomb of Saint Francis. The church technically consists of two parts - a lower church and upper church. In the lower half, visitors can find the incredibly sacred tomb of San Francesco, as well as important frescoes by Cimabue, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini. The upper part of the church allows a heavenly light to shine in, glowing upon ancient frescoes painted by Giotto. These colorful 28 frescoes are dazzle in glory, depicting the life of the Saint, and forever representing a vivid celebration of life. After exploring the inside of Basilica di San Francesco, you can exit onto a lawn overlooking the skyline of Assisi.
Make the most of your private driver, and ask him to take you to the nearby Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. It is located about two and a half miles (four kilometers) from the city center. When visiting Santa Maria degli Angeli, you can actually enter another much smaller building inside - “Porziuncola,” a very small, stone chapel which housed Saint Francis and his followers. Inside this tiny structure, Saint Francis started the Franciscan order. Now, you will see the Porziuncola has been decorated in Gothic style frescoes, glorifying the small building. This sacred stop is a must-see during your visit to Assisi for those interested in religious history or relics.
After spending some time in Assisi, your driver will take you to the lovely, hilltop town of Cortona. It is most well known for being the place where the film, “Under the Tuscan Sun,” was filmed in the early 2000’s. This town is extremely historic; in fact, it was originally built by the Etruscans! Now, you can enjoy the picturesque streets filled with flowers, stunning views of the rolling hills, and Tuscan architecture. Enjoy some free time to independently explore the town, take plenty of pictures, and sip on a coffee, or indulge in an aperitivo beverage! When you are ready, your private driver will be waiting for you.
After a memorable day of history, sacred sites, and natural beauty, you can enjoy the comfort of a private Mercedes vehicle. You will be dropped off directly at your accommodation in Florence in the early evening.

Our driver Mr. Tiziano Valerie met us exactly on time in our hotel lobby, impeccably dressed and professional, with a very comfortable Mercedes sedan to ride in. The drive to and from Assisi (about 2.5 hrs from Florence) was scenic and lovely, with breaks to stretch the legs. Our guide in Assisi was passionate and knowledgeable. We were able to see the tomb of the most recent Saint Carlos Acutis, the first Millennial Saint, as well as St. Catherine and were able to get in to the Basilica of San Francisco despite the huge crowds there for the unveiling of St. Francis’ relics. The only hiccup came with lunch - I could not remember if it was prepaid or just a reservation - and the lovely wine shop owner’s English was very poor. We worked it out as everyone was very nice. I would suggest if you want to see both Assisi and Cortona from Florence, leave early! We left at 9am and did not get to Cortona until about 5 and we were very tired. It was a long day but great memories!
Great low stress experience! Our driver Valentin was exceptional and professional. He arrived promptly, was a good driver, and explained sites along the way and was flexible about giving us a short time at St Carlo Arcutis which we had forgotten to request at booking. Our guide of Assisi was knowledgeable of St Francis and St Clare and the two cathedrals. She was patient (permitting short prayer time and lighting of candles) and spoke English exceptionally well. Overall the trip was very fun, educational, and low stress. The only unexpected item was the additional cost for headsets at St Francis cathedral. The cost was small and given how positive the day went, and how flexible they were in other ways, not a big deal. I only mention it here so that others making the same reservation are not caught off guard by the small headset charge at St Francis cathedral.
The places we visited are amazing. Our driver Placido was great and very informative making our trip memorable making stops along the way.
We opted for the two hour guided tour of Assisi and that was the best decision. She was so knowledgeable and helped direct us on what do with our free time. Would have liked more time in Cortona. More to see there than expected. Our driver, Luca, was also very knowledgeable and had great input
Easy to book- Professional driver who was pleasant and flexible. Plenty of time to see each site built into the day. It was a good value for the day and ease of process and trip.
Stellar service, easy way to see historical sites. Plenty of time to spend in both places and the private driver was professional, timely and a pleasure.
We recently booked three days of private tours and transfers through Ciao Florence for our family, totaling close to $4,000 USD. As a travel advisor coordinating this experience with Beatrice from Private Experiences and Events department on behalf of my own family, I found the communication process difficult. Responses typically took at least 48 hours, which made it challenging to finalize details and respond to my client’s (and family’s) questions in a timely manner. On the day of our first scheduled tour, my mother had a fall at the train station and required medical evaluation. Despite this unexpected event, Ciao Florence stated there would be no refund and that additional charges would apply to reschedule, which felt disappointing and insensitive given the situation. Thankfully, our experience with Cristian, our private tour guide, helped turn things around. Cristian was kind, knowledgeable, professional, and attentive throughout both tour days. He explained the day’s plan clearly, welcomed our input, and made thoughtful additions to the itinerary. As a family interested in Catholic pilgrimage, he took us to the Franciscan Hermitage after our visit to Assisi, which became a deeply meaningful highlight for us. On our second day, he suggested a wonderful winery for lunch and called ahead to ensure the staff was ready for us with a tasting, tour, and table—all handled with genuine care. Cristian was consistently on time and clearly respected by the local guides he worked with. While the itinerary from Ciao Florence mentioned that Wi-Fi and bottled water would be provided, these were not included. Cristian’s hospitality and professionalism were the bright spots in an otherwise bumpy planning process. He deserves five stars. The company’s communication and policies, however, left a lot to be desired.
Cristian was an amazing guide. Went over and above to make our day one of the most memorable experiences in Italy. Thank you for everything Cristian.
This was a perfect tour for us. We prefer to wander about on our own rather than with a tour group. Leonardo, our driver, was excellent. We had over 2 hours of free time in each location. Had a great lunch in Cortona at Leonardo's suggestion. Would definitely go with this company again.
Gabriele lead an amazing tour and was well-informed on each of the locations. Definitely recommend booking this trip!
Really enjoyed the trip to Orvieto and Assisi. Our guide Gabriele was super friendly. Assisi was beautiful, worth making the trek from Florence. Very spiritual places, the tour was heavily focussed around the churches.
Our driver, Tisiano, met us at our hotel in Florence and drove us to Assisi, and then to Cortona. He knew the important parts of St. Francis' story, and stopped at the Portiuncula sanctuary before arriving in the town of Assisi. We so appreciated that, because we really weren't sure of what we should see. We were free to roam in Assisi and then met our driver at an appointed time. We then drove to Cortona and stayed for an hour or so--it's a very beautiful town. Before returning to Floe also stopped at an old church that our driver particularly likes which is very beautiful. Tisiano was punctual and professional and really just a wonderful person. We had a great day!
If I could give our driver OSWALDO 10 stars I would. Omg he was so kind. He changed our stops a little bit to accommodate us and explained everything. When we were ready to be picked up he was always there waiting for us. It was a fantastic day. ASSISSI is so beautiful
Assisi was beautiful. It was the low season so no crowds and lots of atmosphere. We loved wondering the narrow cobblestone streets and visiting the religious sites. Cortona was even more medieval and equally fascinating. Placido, our driver guide was great.
Assisi is beautiful but not worth the price for driving service. Not much input from driver who also seems too eager to just get us there and back.
Great visit to two special places. Assisi in Dec was wonderful. Special note to our driver Placido. If you are able try and get him. He made the day what it was.
Our day trip to Assisi and Cortona was lovely, despite essentially all the shops being closed in Cortona (apparently it was Monday). Our driver was just a driver however and barely spoke to us at all. We knew he would not be a guide to us around the towns but based on other reviews we expected he would be at least sharing some of his knowledge during the drive. It would have been helpful to have been provided city maps to aid in our self-guided tours. We found the information center in Assisi where we obtained one, but were not successful in doing so in Cortona.
Great excursion with Francesca and Lorenzo despite the cool rainy weather. All interesting aspects explained, lots of time to explore provided. Great guide Francesca.
We had a good trip. Our driver was nice and friendly and even picked us up when we got lost and didn’t make it to the meeting point. He also took us at the plaza of Michael Angelo even if that was not included in the tour!
City tour guide was very late showing up so we ended up not using him. Not sure what happened there.. Christian (our driver) did a great job of making sure we got to see and do everything we wanted. He provided much information on the history of the region and made arrangements for us to visit an excellent winery for tasting and a great lunch. He is the best tour guide/driver ever!!!!!

We were booked on a private tour of Assisi, but because of a mix-up in the bookings we ended up on the group tour to Assisi, Cortona and Passignano Sul Trasimeno. This turned out to be good for us because we ended up having Julio as our tour guide. Julio was fantastic. He led a group of English and Spanish speaking tourists. He was able to switch effortlessly between languages. He was entertaining and very knowledgable and considerate of the needs to the tour group. He gave us extra free time where he could. The afternoon in Assisi was definitely the highlight: very moving and well presented. Scenery on the way was stunning. Ten out of ten Julio!

My wife and I took the private full day tour of Assisi and Cortona on Sunday March 18th. I wanted to compliment you on our driver Luca. He did such a good job and was extremely attentive to our needs all day. He was able to get us close to the important attractions armed with the information to make the most of the trip. Between the weather and the fact that it was Sunday we faced a few obstacles. Luca allowed us to see everything we were interested in and always had an umbrella at the ready. We learned a lot about the area as we drove. His suggestions helped immensely especially when it came to lunch. We had a very nice meal at Ristorante degli Orti. We never felt rushed and had a excellent experience. This is a perfect trip if you want to see beautiful hill towns and spectacular churches and only have a day. Please thank Luca again for us.
Sergio, un lujo de persona. Muy predispuesto, y nos dio algunos tips. Muy agradable jornada tuvimos.
