Our guide Driss, was accommodating and adapted the pace and route to suit us, travelling with a child, which we really appreciated. We covered the key sights and learned a lot about the city and its history.

Itinerary
Start our Fez Medina walking tour at the Bab Bou Jeloud (Blue Gate), on the west side of the Medina. Originally built in the 12th century, it was reconstructed as a triple-arched gate in 1913 by the French to create a grander entrance to the city.
After entering the gate, take a quick left, then right onto Talaa Kebira. Passing a plethora of interesting stalls and cafés, pop into Medersa Bou Inania (20 Drh). Built in the 1350’s the madersa is the finest theological school in the city and contains an entire mosque.
It is located in Fes el Bali, the oldest medina quarter of the city, near the Saffarin Madrasa along the Oued Fes
Turn right passing the dyers souk and mirror stalls along Leather street before arriving at charming Place Seffarine.
You are now back in the main shopping streets. The beautiful Souk el Attarine sells all sorts of clothes and jewels and is flanked by the extremely ornate mausoleum of Moulay Idriss III. Built in 1323 many consider this the heart of the Medina.
Visit the Henna Souk and the Museum of Woods, Arts & Crafts (20 Drh) at the restored fondouk in Place an-Nejjarine. Then, head along Talaa Seghira and back to the Blue Gate to find a place for a late lunch.
Place Seffarine is the perfect spot for a break. Take a sweet mint tea on the pavement at Crèmerie la Place and watch the metal-workers beat their copper pots and pans into submission.

Idriss was an incredible guide and made our experience in Fes better than we could have imagined. It was clear that he was born and raised in the Medina, he knew the area and its history like the back of his hand. He also has experience as both a teacher and a tour guide throughout Morocco so we were able to get answers to any question we had about Amazigh and Moroccan history. The experience felt much more authentic and personal as we walked the streets and every day residents would stop us to say hi to Idriss who is just another one of their neighbors!
Idriss is an AMAZING tour guide and equally wonderful person!! My niece and I arrived in Fes the night before meeting him and was a met with a bit of unanticipated chaos. I explained the situation to Idriss for context before meeting, and his caring demeaner put us both entirely at ease. He is so incredibly caring, loves his city, and is wonderful at explaining the history and processes to people of all ages - I am 40 and my niece18 - for equal understanding. Idriss' English is phenomenal, which is an added bonus! For lunch, he suggested a local restaurant with the best chicken skewers we had had the entire trip. While visiting the tannery, the electricity briefly went out (people were working on the AC unit!) and he immediately came to look for us. It was so very thoughtful! My favorite part of Idriss and his tour is he felt like someone you already knew and could be entirely comfortable around. He asked questions about what we wanted to see and would suggest stops along the way. His smile is contagious, and he is genuinely a beautiful soul. We had a wonderful experience and would absolutely love another tour with him and suggest him to anyone who visits Fes! It was difficult to say good-bye and I hugged him twice!
Idriss is a guide who shares the history of Fez and daily life. He loves his city and knows how to make us love it. With Idriss we discovere secret area !
Driss was AMAZING. Important things I was looking for was someone who could speak understandable English and not a guide taking us to places we were pressured to buy. He spoke amazing English ( and many other languages); we were not bothered by any shop owners while we were with him. Part of the tour and things we wanted to see were the tanneries, which after seeing they took us downstairs to buy leather if we would like. We did not feel pressured but this was where the locals came to buy leather as well. There was also a Berber carpet shop ( he gave us the option) and we wanted to buy blankets so we went. Also, he asked if we wanted to go to an argan oil place. Another presentation but no pressure and very informative. We wanted to buy different things in the shop so we opted in. Fez would have been very difficult to see without a guide and was also great company. He offered to take us somewhere to eat and then continue on but we had skipped breakfast and the rest of the group wanted to shop for trinkets. I would recommend him to ANYONE looking for a really great guide. Felt like I was hanging out with my Grandpa in his hometown. Very knowledgable and friendly to everyone in the town. It was so nice being with him walking through the medina. Don't hesitate to book through him. I will be sending my friends his number to come. A huge thing for me is not being taken to places to just buy stuff and he was an answer to my dreams come true. Great tour!
Idriss was very knowledgeable, explained in great detail all the sites, helped us taste the local delicacies, and was very friendly and helpful. My wife forgot her phone in our car and Idriss went out of his way to get her phone. Idriss is the best. He was like a family member taking us around. He did not rush us. He helped us with our shopping.
Idriss was a perfect tour guide, introducing my friend and I to the city and orienting us well on our first day in Fes. Kind, attentive, super knowledgeable, personable, Idriss will take care of you! Thanks again!
My goal for the day was to go on an intensive tour with a local guide. I had no idea that my expectations would be so exceeded! Idriss is an excellent host, he involved me right from the pick-up in ‘his’ city with lots of interesting storytelling, detailed explanations and a lot of warmth. He navigated to all relevant locations and always had 1a contacts who were part of his personal network. This personal relationships made it so authentic and fantastic. That was history you could experience and touch, thank you Idriss!
If you search for a professional guide in Fez, make a tour with Idriss! His English is excellent and shows you the highlights of the Fez Medina!
Fantastic guide with expert local knowledge and real passion for his home city. Idriss became our friend whilst showing us around this amazing place.
The best tour guide in town! With a lot of historical background. We enjoyed the tour a lot! Wonderful tour in Fez! Thanks a lot, Driss!
Idriss make us like Fes a lot more. He very friendly, supportive and knowledgeable. He introduced the history of the Medina, local food, recommended some good restaurants, especially he explained the style and functions of architecture and even why the city has a lot of cats. He also took a lot of pictures for us to memorise the trip. We feel lucky to choose his tour after the scam on the day we arrived, make us believe that Fes is still a worth visit city.
Idriss is very friendly guide. He is very knowledgeable and he shared a lot of interesting information about the medina. The places he took us to (incl those in the itinerary and extra places that we would like to visit such as carpet shops, restaurant recommendation) were all worth going. As he said, he wouldn’t take us to bad places! Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who would like to enjoy a half day tour in the medina with a knowledgeable and friendly guide
Great visit with Idriss who showed us the medina of Fez. As he grew up in the city, he has lots of knowledge, knows the people and vendors, and shows you the highlights during a 3 hour tour. He picked us up at the riad in the morning. Idriss speaks perfect English and French and is very friendly. I highly recommend you book him to visit the medina the firts time. Well worth the time and money. Thanks again Idriss.
We had a really great tour with an really good guide, Idriss! He showed us a lot of hidden gems of the medina but also the highlights, such as the tannery and madrassa. He asked several times if we wanted to see or do something, so he adjust his plan to yours. Idriss speaks very good English and knew a lot. We would definitely recommend him as a guide!
Idriss was a fantastic local guide. From Fes, his knowledge of the area, its architecture and its history were fantastic. He was very personable, and had answers to all of our questions. He was very patient as we took our time exploring the bustling medina, the beautiful Al-Attarine madrasa, the impressive tanneries, and lots more!
We had a really great time exploring the old medina with Idriss. He is a very kind and knowledgable man who speaks many languages and was able to explain lots about the local history to us. He did not try to sell us anything and waited patiently whilst we looked around. Would really recommend taking a tour with him - it enhanced our experience of Fes. Thank you Idriss for a wonderful day!
We had a great tour with Mr Idriss! We would highly recommend him! He knows a lot, is very friendly and humble. No cousins to shop just a very informed tour!
Today we had the pleasure of having Idris as our guide around Fes, and I mean pleasure. He is such an intelligent, well informed, gentle, urbane man with a wealth of knowledge about the history of the country, its culture, religions, customs and architecture. It was fascinating to hear him talk on a wealth of topics. Unlike many guides, he did not steer us into shops where we were pressured to buy. Instead he proffered suggestions as to the type of interests we may wish to pursue. We were not rushed, instead we had a thoroughly enjoyable day gaining an insight inside both past and present Fes. We would thoroughly recommend Idris as a guide. Dianne Bendall on behalf of a group of four travellers.
Walking the Medinas from the 9th and 14th centuries with tour guide Idriss is a wonderful experience. He is extremely knowledgeable about culture, history and tidbits of information. His gentle, friendly style is welcoming. Passersby of stop to greet him - he is well known and respected throughout Fes. We enjoyed his behind the scene access to some off track places. Yes - you can explore Fes on your own but time with Idriss adds meaning and defintion to your experience.
Idris is a fantastic guide! He spent over 5 hours delighting us with both his knowledge and patience. He easily accommodated our interests and our needs. Even our kids, age 8 and 11, had a great time. Idris, a great historian, has a wealth of knowledge about a city he clearly loves. If we come back to Fes I am sure we could spend another 5 hours with him, see all different stuff, and leave just as pleased.
The best walking tour ever! Idriss is lovely, kind, caring and knowledgeable. Born and bred in the medina, he knows inside out of his wonderful home city, Fes. I honestly feel extremely lucky to have him as my guide, from whom I learned so much about the Islamic culture, past and present of this amazing imperial city, and most importantly, people's life there. Thank you Idriss for the delightful, informative afternoon. Shukran jazilan!
I had the most amazing time touring Fes with Idriss! He is kind, funny, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. I recommend his tour for anyone wanting to learn about the dynamic history of Fes and the depth of Moroccan culture. Thank you Idriss for the wonderful tour!
Idris was a delightful guide, he was quite knowledgeable about the city as well as being very personable. He also made my group feel safe and cared about. Would book again (:
Idris is a very kind, humoristic and helpfull man. He's knowledge about the history of Fez and Marocco is enormous. At the same time he gives a very open view on the religious, politic and daily life.. with respect for everyone. Without this guide ws wouldn't have seen half of the city, with him you discover the mist interesting places. My recommendation is 100%
Excellent tour for 4 of us with Idris who was very knowledgeable about the Medina and it’s main sites and history and good advice given about the locality. The tour was arranged by our Riad and we were very pleased with the result.
Idris is an excellent guide. A native of Fes with love for his city, he gave us an informative yet relaxed tour of the Fes Medina. He did not just show us around but also gave us background & historical information about the places we were visiting. Idris also informed us on contemporary Fes & how the city fares in today's Morocco. Finally, when the tour ended, we asked him for recommendations on where to have Mechoui (a Moroccan dish we wanted to try) & he took us to a restaurant which ended up being among the best in our Morocco holiday (2 weeks, 7+ cities). I highly recommend Idriss Shukran Idriss!
Idris is an excellent tour guide. He has plethora of knowledge about the Medina, it’s deep rooted history and contemporary connections. I would recommend him for anyone visiting the area.
Idrees was very knowledgeable, we had very short time however, he was able to provide us the succinct information about Moroccan history and Fez Medina . He seems to lot of people in Medina , I would hire him again .
Idrees is a very knowledgeable guide. He gave us half day tour and provided us succinct information about the Fez Medina . He also provided great info about the Moroccan society and culture. He is affable , seems to be a respected person and know lot of people in Medina. He did take us to tannery and ceramic factory but did not make attempt or push us to buy anything.
We booked a private tour of the Medinah in Fez with Idriss. He came highly recommended by our travel agent. We planned via WhatsApp. He arrived 10 minutes before our arranged time at our hotel lobby. We then took a taxi to the Medinah. I absolutely loved our tour. Idriss is extremely knowledgeable, and it seems he's local celebrity: everywhere we went, people were greeting him. This was our first time doing a private tour and it was an extremely wonderful experience. The tour was a half day, but it lasted slightly longer due our personal interests and our questions. He was very patient and considerate. The pace of the tour was perfect. (We saw other tours being whisked off to the next spot and questions going unanswered, while we were able to take our time.) He was able to answer our numerous questions in a very efficient and thoughtful manner. His English was excellent, and I think he also speaks French. At several spots he made sure we got the pictures we wanted by helping to clear other groups out of way. I would highly recommend him for either a private or a group tour.
Idriss led an exciting tour of Fes, guiding us through the bustling souk, intricate tanneries, and enlightening Quranic schools. His cultural knowledge shone through, providing a thorough and engaging explanation of each site. Highly recommended!
What can I say , had an amazing day from start to finish with Idris , we went as a group tour. Idriss had good command of English , he made us feel welcome and put humour in most things he did , we went on a tour around the medina and his knowledge of the city is excellent. I cannot recommend him enough .
We had such a lovely day with Idris. We originally scheduled a half a day with him, but he was so knowledgeable, fun loving, and charismatic that we couldn’t pass up spending the whole day in his presence. My wife and I rarely higher guides when we travel, however, the Medina of Fez is intimidating and complex and with Idris’ guidance we were able to see and learn about things we would had missed without him.
Driss was our guide to discover the medina of Fes, we learned a lot about the history of the medina, custom and tradition. He adapted to our pace because we came with a small child, a very nice experience and beautiful person, thank you very much!
We had a wonderful time with our guide Driss . He has a great culture of Fes, his explanations are very interesting, he adapts the visit according to your desires, I recommend it with closed eyes! Thank you very much.
We had a great day in Fez thanks to our guide Idriss . Very professional, punctual and passionate about the history of the medina. He made us discover authentic places, off the beaten track, while sharing many interesting anecdotes. His knowledge of Moroccan culture and his love for his city are impressive. I highly recommend Idriss to anyone who wants to discover Fes in depth
We visited little known sites in Fes. Idriss made us discover beautiful places in the medina, her comments were exciting.
Excellent guide, very interesting with a great knowledge of the city! He was at our disposal, with great kindness, all day and showed us around the most interesting sights of the city and many craftsmen.
Excellent guide!! we read the other reviews and Driss is exactly as it is described! A great knowledge of the city , a real inhabitant of Fes . He guided us off the beaten track in the medina with very interesting explanations that we would not have had without him. Very friendly, very attentive and so smiling. Very cultured. a lot of finesse and intelligence in our exchanges going well beyond simple information about the city! A very nice visit to Fes and a real meeting. How lucky we were! Thank you and good luck for you Driss!
We can only recommend Driss with his eyes closed to make you discover the medina of Fez that he knows as his pocket , and possible other excursions outside the city . We were able to take advantage for 2 days of his very great historical and political knowledge to better understand Moroccan culture and its riches. Many thanks Driss and look forward to meeting you again on our way... Incha ‘ Allah Marie-Catherine et Marc
We recommend Idriss with your eyes closed. It is a wonderful guide, combining a very great knowledge of the medina and the history of Morocco in general, with a kindness that made this visit of a few hours very pleasant and very rewarding. Thank you again for sharing your culture and everything.

Visit of the medina, pleasant and interesting orchestrated by Driss who gave us a lot of explanation Another big thank you to Driss
Very good Guide who knew how to adapt to small children and adults with a smile and good mood. The visits were rich in explanations at more than reasonable Awards.
We spent almost 4 hours with Driss and loved everything! Thanks to him we saw the essentials, met passionate and exciting people and at the end of our visit he took us to a very good restaurant with a pretty terrace. And thank you for the recommendation of the other restaurant Driss, we were amazed! 😍
Excellent tour in the medina with great flexibility from our super guide: Ba Driss who knows Fes and the Fassis like the back of his hand. We were really able to see everything we wanted.
