Itinerary
Begin your walking tour at Bab Boujloud, Fes’s iconic gate adorned with stunning green and blue ceramic tiles. This landmark marks the entrance to the old medina and offers a perfect first impression of the city. Wander through the historic Mellah (Jewish Quarter), marvel at the 17th-century Ibn Danan Synagogue, and admire the grandeur of the Royal Palace. For panoramic views of the city, ascend the Merinid Tops & Borj North and South. Complete this stop with a visit to a traditional ceramic workshop, where skilled artisans demonstrate the intricate craft for which Fes is famous.
Step into Rainbow Street, a hidden gem that showcases Fes’s modern artistic side. Bright murals, colorful street art, and spontaneous performances bring the streets to life, reflecting Morocco’s contemporary creative spirit. This vibrant area offers a unique contrast to the historic medina, providing excellent photo opportunities and a glimpse into local urban culture.
Visit the Nejjarine Museum, housed in the beautifully restored Funduq al-Najjarin, a former inn for traders. Explore its impressive collection of traditional wooden crafts, tools, and furniture while admiring the elegant riad-style architecture. The museum’s rooftop terrace provides sweeping views of the medina’s rooftops and minarets. (Admission fee: 20 DH per person).
Wander through the labyrinthine streets of the Fes Medina, one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. Admire intricate mosaics, carved wooden doors, and hidden courtyards as you explore bustling souks filled with vibrant textiles, handcrafted ceramics, leather goods, and traditional Moroccan treasures. Your guide will help you navigate the maze-like alleys, pointing out hidden gems and local artisans.
Learn about the sacred Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II, a shrine dedicated to the founder of the city. While entrance is restricted to non-Muslims, your guide will explain its historical and religious significance, and you can admire the architecture and the surrounding area.
Explore the exterior of the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University, the world’s oldest existing university, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri. Learn about its historical importance as a center of Islamic education and admire the intricate architecture of the mosque and the nearby Andalusian Mosque.
Visit the Chouara Tannery, the largest and oldest tannery in Fes. Observe traditional leather dyeing techniques passed down through centuries, with vibrant color vats creating a striking visual experience. Your guide will explain the process from soaking to drying, and you can take iconic photos from the surrounding terraces.
Step inside the Al-Attarine Madrasa, a serene 14th-century religious school known for its exquisite tilework, carved wood, and tranquil courtyard. The madrasa offers a peaceful escape from the bustling medina and a glimpse into Morocco’s rich religious and educational history. (Admission fee: 20 DH per person).
Stroll through the Attarine Souk, a bustling marketplace famous for spices, perfumes, and handcrafted goods. The fragrant aromas and vibrant displays provide a sensory experience that embodies the essence of Moroccan souks.
Explore the Souk Sebaghine, the traditional dyers’ market where artisans dye fabrics using age-old techniques. The market is filled with vivid colors and offers insight into an ancient craft that remains vital in the medina today.
Conclude your tour at Place R’cif, a lively square that connects the historic medina with the modern city. The area is full of local vendors, cafes, and fresh produce markets. It’s the perfect place to experience daily life in Fes and enjoy an authentic taste of Moroccan urban culture before returning to your hotel or riad.

He showed us around to some of the best local shops and tasty local eats, and took us around town where ever we showed interest in. Ended up snagging leather goods. Definitely made the trip one to remember and have an appreciation for the old city and life in a different era (medina) - recommended fully.
This private walking tour of the Fez Medina was absolutely amazing and one of the highlights of our trip. Having a knowledgeable local guide made a huge difference—he explained the history, culture, and traditions of Fez in a very engaging and easy-to-understand way. We explored hidden alleys, historic madrasas, traditional souks, and local workshops that we never would have found on our own. The guide was very patient, friendly, and happy to answer all our questions, and he tailored the tour to our interests and pace. What I appreciated most was the authentic local perspective and the feeling of being truly immersed in daily life inside the medina. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Fez, especially if it’s your first time. It’s the best way to understand the city and its rich history.
