During a recent family trip to Morocco, we had the chance to dive—hands first—into the world of traditional Moroccan pottery and mosaic in Fès. If you’re the kind of traveler who likes more than just snapping photos and buying souvenirs, this two-hour hands-on workshop is a gem. The experience kicked off with a behind-the-scenes look at the artistry that goes into pottery making. Step by step, we were shown the meticulous process—from spinning clay to shaping, drying, and firing. Then came the mosaics—an eye-opening intro into the geometric wizardry that Moroccan artisans are known for. After the demos, it was our turn to try. Let’s just say: those tutorials on YouTube make it look easy. Spoiler alert—it’s not. We each got a shot at the pottery wheel, creating our own wonky (but proudly made) designs. Then we moved to mosaic work, choosing from an array of hand-cut tiles to create something unique. Once finished, the team filled in the gaps with cement and—bonus—delivered the final pieces to our riad the next day. Super cool touch. The whole activity was not just fun, but deeply insightful. It gave us a real appreciation for the incredible skill and patience these craftsmen have. And to top it all off, they brought us into a showroom full of jaw-dropping ceramic pieces—everything from tiny dishes to massive, intricate fountains. Best part? No sales pressure at all… though, let’s be honest, we didn’t leave empty-handed. Our guide, Mourad, was excellent—knowledgeable, friendly, and honest. Pricing was very reasonable, especially compared to some of the large tour operators. You can contact the workshop directly to book, and I’d recommend doing so—both to save money and to support the local artisans directly. Bottom line: if you’ve got a couple of hours to spare in Fès and want to come away with more than just pictures, this workshop is an absolute must.

Spent almost 2 hours at this fantastic pottery and zellige workshop, guided by the enthusiastic Mourad. Top service incl taxi ride that picks you up at the desired place and brings you back. During the workshop, you also get a word of explanation about the different materials and how they work there. Like how the zellige is laid. Very quick to book and you also get a very quick reply/confirmation. You can have everything you make there sent both domestic or abroad for a decent price. At the end you can buy something in the shop but this is not an obligation!
Words are missing to describe the customer service we get from Mr. Mourad , our tour guided in the pottery workshop. We spend a very nice time with him in making pottery wheel and painting, but the most interesting part was mosaic . We have had a lot of fun and the experience was intresting and enjoyable.
It was a wonderful experience! The instructor was knowledgeable and patient, guiding us through each step with ease. The workshop itself was well-organized, with a relaxed atmosphere that allowed for creativity. The transport to and from could be improved. We were with four, but the car could only fit three.
It was an amazing experience! Very friendly People. It was nice to watch te people work with precision. It makes you appreciate the mozaic even more! The organisation helped me emediately when I contacted them for help, very kind en helpful. Thank you so much!
We had a really good time! We were shown everything and he answered any questions we had very well, it wasn't rushed at any point which was nice. Getting to try out the different crafts with the help of the masters was really great. We'd definitely go there again.
My daughter visited Art D’Argile workshop a few months ago and had such a fantastic time that she recommended I go too! That was a great recommendation. I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 hours learning about the processes of making pottery from wheel throwing through baking in the kiln and also about making mosaics. After learning I too had the chance to practice, by wheel throwing, painting pottery and making a mosaic trivet. The artisans there were very friendly and helpful in assisting with designs and colors. If you like to use your hands to create this art experience is definitely for you! Morad was a great host, arranges your transportation and also will deliver your finished products back yo where you are staying the next day for 30 MAD. I highly recommend you give it a try!
We visited with Mourad as part of our trip to Fes and to do something nice on my birthday. In the lead up to the day, Mourad was very helpful with advising us on accommodation (we had made a bad choice!) and also organising transport. He gave a great (quick) tour of the cooperative factory and explained all of the different disciplines, taking photos for us and generally adding a lot of colour to the excursion. This feels like a really comfortable, safe and creative space to enjoy for a few hours outside of the medina. We had a fantastic two hours creating our own pieces - painting/mosaic and pottery. The artisans are all so wonderfully skilled and patient, we loved interacting with them and learning. This was the highlight. Mourad was also very good at making sure our pottery was delivered to us in Marrakesh and organised everything, which was above and beyond. The reason for giving four stars and not five is that we felt hugely under pressure to buy things once we were involved in the tour. Though it started well, there was frequent reference to other tourists and their commissions, dhl delivery, repetitive sales patter, which culminated in quite pushy behaviour in the shop at the end. We were really happy to buy things and wanted to spend more but to be honest this put us off and we didn’t want to spend any more money here. This is cultural and the Moroccan way for tourists, but we had thought we might be relieved of it during a craft morning. It is surprising to me that nobody else has commented on this. I would recommend this tour but be prepared to weather the sales pitch. Mourad is a great guy.
Amazing experience!! Fun ceramic and mosaic workshop. Highly recommended. Make sure to go at the start of you Fes trip so you can take your pieces home - they need a few days to bake :)
The entire experience was lovely. The team and craftsmen were keen on sharing their knowledge to help us create our own works. Mourad guided us through the day and was kind enough to have his mom make us couscous for lunch. We made a zellije tile and colored our own pots, we even got to try the wheel. We had a lovely day and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Both the tour of the co-op as well as workshops were fascinating & enjoyable. It was very interesting to understand how a range of crafts are made - ranging from pottery to mosaics, and lent a new appreciation for the mastery behind each art. My guide Mourad was very clear & comprehensive, explaining everything patiently. It was evident that he is both passionate & knowledgeable about the field. He was also a great cheerleader, supportive & vocal with praise during the workshop process, whilst I was painting my pieces - which was very much needed on my part! I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone who is interested in both learning more about & trying their hand at, local Moroccan crafts. It is suitable for both individuals as well as in groups.
First I want to thank Mourad and all the team for their kindness and their friendly, really was from my perfect experiences, they helped me in every step , they explained everything with a perfect vibes , I appreciate all their effort to make us proud of what we did and being satisfied, thank you so much for your perfect customer service 🌸
This unique experience with Mourad and all the artist in their cooperative was unforgettable, it’s amazing to get our hands dirty with the clay and make our own dish by ourselves which is not easy as it may seem by the way, but thanks to the Maalem (the master) who was very helpful and patient with us! All in all this is a must try in Fes with the host Mourad who was very communicative and friendly, I recommend it to everyone who want to delve into the art of pottery and ceramics in Fes
We spent amazing time thanks to you Mourad, We are definitely looking forward to seeing you again ! Thank you for your hospitality and kindness!
We had a ceramic workshop where we made our own pottery, painted ceramics and made our own mosaic. We had a very good experience with our guide Mourad. After we created our ‘masterpieces’ we were allowed to bring them home as a souvenir. Would highly recommend booking this workshop when you’re in Fes!
Activity to do absolutely, professional and warm staff. Visit + installation of ceramics and realization of a mosaic
Very nice family experience. You can choose the time you want, the tour was private with transport included. After an explanatory tour on pottery and mosaic we realized a painting and mosaic workshop. We were able to bring our little creation back to mosaic. If you can choose this activity at the beginning of the stay because 3 days later you can pick up your pottery. The welcome was very warm and we are delighted, our 6 year old daughter was well cared for. Thanks again!
He said hello! Thank you! and other things in Japanese lol He was a very interesting person, so I was able to enjoy the tour ^ ^ I was very interested in Moroccan tiles (Zellige), so I'm glad I was able to learn more about them on this tour.
