About Activity
You depart from El Chaltén along the Fitz Roy footpath. After about 20 minutes of ascent, you reach the Valley of the Vueltas River viewpoint, a striking example of the “U”-shaped valleys carved by Patagonian glaciers. Continuing with a gentle climb, you arrive at the Fitz Roy massif viewpoint, where the peaks of Saint Exupéry, Poincenot, Fitz Roy, Mermoz, and Guillaumet can be admired in all their grandeur. The trail then flattens for approximately two hours as you walk through lenga forests, alive with the songs of countless bird species, until you reach Río Blanco Campground, the base for climbers tackling these iconic granite summits. From here, you ascend 400 meters over about an hour to Laguna de los Tres, the highest point of the trail. The stunning vistas of Fitz Roy, the glacier de los Tres, and its lagoon make for a truly humbling experience. You circle the lagoon and continue to the Laguna Sucia viewpoint, enjoying yet another unforgettable panorama. After a rest and lunch, you descend back to El Chaltén, passing Laguna Capri, a favorite spot for photographers, before completing the hike.
