Itinerary
The excursion begins with the pick up from the hotels in El Calafate city, and goes through the Provincial Road N°11 to the Perito Moreno Glacier area, after traveling 75 km.
Once at the National Park, the bus takes you to the balconies and the guide is going to be waiting for you, to inform about the different trails. There, you’ll be free to walk along.
A bus from the company will take you to "Bajo las Sombras" pier, about 6 km far from the balconies, where you embark for a 20 minutes navigation across the Brazo Rico, enjoying breathtaking views of the glacier’s front walls and the Canal de los Témpanos (Icebergs Channel).
After checking the last details, groups of 20 follow their guides along the lake’s shore towards the edge of the glacier. Once on the ice, the guides put each participant a pair of crampons on, and explain how to use them. You will receive explanations about flora, fauna and general glaciology of the region, and also about the particular phenomenon that happens in the Perito Moreno Glacier and eventually produces its rupture.
Once the minitrekking is finished we return to pier "Bajo Las Sombras", navigating the Brazo Rico again.
The bus will be waiting for passengers at the port to take them back to their hotels in El Calafate

Rather than repeat everyone else saying what an amazing trip this is (& it is, if you can afford it, do it) I thought I'd write a review about the logistics of driving in your own car to Puerto Bajo. (where the boat leaves from) I was told by H&A that the drive would take me about 1.30 to 1.40 & that I should get there at least 30 mins early. My tour started at 0845. However the park only opens at 8am and it's a 20-30 min drive from the entrance to the port so you cannot arrive much before 0830. If you pre paid or are paying by cash you don't need to go into the office. Just grab one of the staff and show them your pass (or give them your cash) and they go and get your pass for you. Unlike El Chalten showing them your online purchase isn't enough, you have to receive a green paper ticket. If you're paying by card then you have to queue up to go into the office. If you arrive after 0830 though there probably won't be a queue. Puerto Bajo is about 15km from the park entrance. Their sign isn't prominent but you can see the boats as you come round an earlier bend in the road. In the end arriving at 0830 (or even later) wasn't a problem as the boat wasn't scheduled to leave until 0900. There is plenty of parking, and there are toilets both at the port and onboard. When you arrive at the other side there is a place to leave your rucksack and/or lunch before embarking on the hike and there are toilets there also. This is also where they give you gloves if you don’t have any. They’re not for the cold but to protect your hand should you fall. Overall we left Puerto Bajo at 9am and by 1.45pm we were back at the port.
Trekking on a glacier was surreal. I felt like I was on another planet. The ice was beautiful and the guides were all fantastic! Highly recommend
One of the best things we did in Argentina. I’m 64 years old and in moderate good shape and not too difficult. However to walk on the glacier you need good knees because with each step you have to stomp your foot hard in the ice so the crampon’s stick. Otherwise you might slip. Lots of quad work. One tip; tie your shoes very tightly because your foot will slip and once they put the crampons in it’s too late to tighten them. Tour guides were fabulous and they assisted with steep parts plus there are guardrails in many parts. On glacier for about 90 minutes.
A very impressive experience, extraordinary beautiful views; attentive, careful, friendly guides; brilliantly organized trekking.
What a breathtaking and truly beautiful experience. This tour lets you see the glacier from multiple angles, including the unforgettable perspective from directly on top of it. The guides were friendly, professional, and made it clear that safety was a top priority throughout the entire trek. The distance itself is short, less than two miles, but the crampons add an extra layer of challenge that makes it feel adventurous without being overwhelming. Anyone in average physical shape should be able to enjoy this experience comfortably. This is one of those rare, once in a lifetime experiences that fully lives up to the hype and then some.
We had great weather and the views were incredible. The trek is very short but gives you plenty of chances to take memorable pictures.
Book directly with hielo & aventure - they do all the tours. Viator just charges you way more! I paid 3 times the price of the tour direct. The sights are unbelievable
We had a perfect day trekking on the glacier and experiencing the ice up close. The views of the glacier from the boat were spectacular. Our guide was both informative and funny making for an enjoyable exploration.
The mini-trekking experience is one of the highlights I had in Patagonia. It's well organized and the company Hielo y Aventura is a professional operator. On this one-day excursion, we were able to see the imposing Perito Moreno glacier from the national park walkaways, take a boat to experience it from close view along with the floating ice bergs, and trek on ice for an hour to see the spike of white, blue, white and gray ice pillars that make up the glacier. I felt I couldn't have dreamed of a more beautiful site than this. Simply no reference point. My guide Tamara accompanied the full bus from beginning to end. She is energetic, funny and eager to her knowledge and love for the region with us. Everyone enjoyed her interactions. I also had Marcos as my trekking guide, who is very good at guiding a group of unorganized tourists not to go where we aren't supposed to. Safety is their number one priority! Overall, this is a fun and informative experience. The whisky, chocolate, and hot tea at the end add a sweet touch to the unforgettable memory. Would recommend!
I wish the actual trekking on the glacier was longer but it was nice nonetheless. The guide were skilled and knowledgeable
Mini-trekking on the Moreno Glacier was absolutely EPIC—crunching across dazzling blue ice, surreal crevasses, and breathtaking views. A once-in-a-lifetime adventure that left me awestruck! 🏔️
This was truly an amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. My friend and I were living and traveling in Argentina for a few months, and this was the highlight of our time there. They picked us up at our hotel around 8:30AM and we got on the bigger bus with the rest of the group. On the drive over the guide gave us some info about the glacier and Calafate in English and Spanish. We took a boat over to the glacier and got some great views. We arrived tot he place where we got to set our stuff down and get fitted for crampons and helmets before the guides took us on the glacier which was spectacular. It is recommended to be in good health to do this excursion as it is quite slippery and hard to walk in the crampons. The guides were patient with me who went extra slow and we celebrated with a whiskey on ice straight from the glacier. Then we took the boat back to do the walkways above to get the full panoramic view of the glacier. We felt that we got to see the glacier from all angles, including up close. 10/10 recommend this tour to anybody who is going to Argentina at all. It is a MUST DO!
The guide is just transferring us to the places and the guide itself was done by ourselves (for the view point) or by the other operation company (for the ice trekking, which maybe the only one operation company for ice trekking ).
The trek is easy and offers an incredible ex The trek is easy and offers an incredible experience. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting this place due to the variable weather conditions. You can take perfect photos during the trek, and the weather can be adjusted, with perfect lighting. The guides are very friendly and contribute to the atmosphere. I highly recommend it.
This was a very, very expensive excursion for the experience provided. Yes, walking on a glacier is cool and the guides were extremely extremely nice, but a thousand bucks for two people is just too much. Instead, I would recommend just taking a taxi to the overlook of the glacier. You get some great views, it doesn't take all day, and he will save significant money.
once in a lifetime experience. all perfectly organized with expert staff. no words can posibly describe this
This excursion is a package of 3 different activities you could organize by youself at a much lower price point. However if what you want is a very well organized package and trip this package is for you. With this package you can turn you brain off and enjoy the ride because everything will be taken care of for you. I highly recommend this excursion : the experience is unique and the staff from all different companies are awesome and very friendly. Loved every minute of this trip. I'm rating it 3 stars because of the price/value ratio only.
A unique and exciting opportunity. Expensive yes, but worth doing once. Even just the viewing theater is amazing, if you can't do the tour.
Absolutely amazing experience. It was by far one of the coolest things I have ever done. The guides were so helpful. The whole day was wonderful!!
Tremendous experience. Hard to put into words how beautiful it is. The guides were very helpful and informative. The boat ride to the glacier was really windy and almost as fun as the trek itself. You can drink right off the glacier. We had 7 people on the trek ranging from 10 years old to 60 years old and everyone had a great time. Highly recommended!
Easy walk with nice English-speaking guide, the cruise is also nice, and the driver is reliable, helpful and very friendly
A very nice day and spectacular views of the south side of the glacier. All was organized well. I just wish we had more time on the glacier, it was just an hour and we only walked on the very edge of it.
This trip was absolutely amazing from start to finish—everything was perfectly organized. A special highlight was the Sebastián Out Glacier tour. Sebastián was a phenomenal guide with a fantastic sense of humor, incredible photography skills, and a friendly, engaging attitude that made the adventure unforgettable. The experience was thrilling, filled with fun, and truly recommendable for anyone seeking an exceptional activity. Highly recommend this trip!
This experience was so well organised and I had such a great day. Walking on the glacier is incredible but the guides were also very knowledgeable about the landscape and wildlife. I'd highly recommend it!
Absolutely amazing day! We loved the experience of walking on ice plus the boat ride and the hike to lunch. The views were amazing and all our guides were fun and friendly and made sure we had a great day. It was all beautiful and well planned.
Best experience of our trip to Argentina. Sebastian was a fabulous guide, and took great care of my children (8 and 11) on the hike.
Incredible! And the mini trekking is something that really gives you the full experience! Walking on the glasear, seen the fractures, hearing when pieces fall into the lake is a lifetime experience.
This is one of those once in a lifetime experiences and yet still very safe! My husband was nervous about being on a glacier but it was very cool and fun! The guides were great! Very funny and knowledgeable. So many pictures taken and they still don't do justice! There are some parts that could be dangerous if you aren't paying attention and following the guides instructions. We got a little winded in the beginning going up hill but that quickly went away with the beauty of it all. Wish it was longer but I only say that because time flies when you're having fun! It was about 3 hours on the glacier. Plenty of time! It was suprisingly not that cold on the glacier. It was like 3x colder on the Glacier Outlook Balcony. Again, it could be because you're stomping on ice and going up and down. Dont miss this chance! Great experience to share with friends and strangers! Nice treat at the end!
This was a fabulous tour! Only about 1.5 hours of walking on the glacier but the other included walks along the shore and through the forest were beautiful, it included two boat rides with ground level views of the glacier, and a 1 hour visit to the viewing balconies. The tour was well run and very informative with friendly guides. A great way to experience Perito Moreno!
The ice trekking is super beautiful that I can recommend to everyone. However, the hike itself is only 1.5 hours so bear that in mind. Also, considering it's very expensive you don't get that much in return. Last but not least, the guide in the beginning could only talk in Spanish which wasn't a problem for Spanish speakers like me but the Americans in our group i.e. felt left out and had no clue what's going on.
This was an incredible experience - trekking the world’s 3rd largest glacier, after only Antarctica and Greenland! Our guides - Nicholas (and Leandro), provided great information about the glaciers and showed the trek’s highlights. Nicholas took pictures of trek participants in areas with the best views. The tour ended with whisky toasts, paired with chocolate! Be forewarned though - although brief, the trek was strenuous, with the added weight of the crampons. Once the catamaran sails, there is no access to food so regardless of what the website says, you must pack lunch. This is a must do in El Calafate!
This was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had. You get picked up from your hotel in El Calafate around 7 am and there’s about a 2 hour drive to the glacier park. You have to pay 30,0000 pesos (around $30 USD). Americans - BRING CASH. They only accept MasterCard (no visa, no AmEx), so cash is easier to use. After you arrive you have about an hour to explore the glacier from the park - there are numerous paths that let you see the glacier from afar. You then board back on the bus and go to the port to take about a 20 minute boat ride to a refuge where you take a quick break and can have coffee or use the bathroom. You then hike about 45 minutes to the summit of the glacier, and then get crampons on and hike the glacier for about 2.5 hours. It is SOOOO cool. The views are insane and the glacier is beautiful. At the end, they pour you a glass of scotch over ice from the glacier! You then do the walk back, get on the boat and head home. This is a full day activity (you won get back til about 5 or 6 pm), and you need to dress for conditions. When we went it was super windy and raining and we wore multiple layers, but many were unprepared. There are plenty of places in downtown El Calafate to rent equipment if you don’t want to pack it because you’re traveling across Argentina. Overall HIGHLY recommend this experience.
Great trip! Glacier was really cool and guides were great. Awesome views. Could have skipped the walk to where we had lunch and just left after the glacier. The lunch spot had a nice view but it sounded like you could buy food there and you couldn’t. They should have a restaurant there that sells food and drinks. Driver was slow, didn’t speak English and we got there late. A lot of cars passed us and the credit card machine didn’t work at the park which slowed us down so not totally his fault.
Amazing one of a kind experience. The excursion was well organised and structured. We were picked up from our hotel by a van, driven to the national park entrance where tourists have to pay entrance fee and then taken to the lookout where we we were left behind to be able to explore the lookout area overlooking the glacier. After two hours we were picked up then taken to the pier to start the mini trekking. We also paid for the entrance to the glacier. We had an amazing guide who slowly took us walking on the glacier, to the peek then had whiskey on patagonian ice. It was truly awesome.
It's hard to describe the beauty of the glacier but it definitely trumped all of our expectations to be able to see and walk on it.
There are no words for how incredible this experience was. Highly recommend, be prepared as it was hard work especially in high winds but totally worth it!
This trip is absolutely worth it. The actual glacier hike is a good length without wearing you out. The guides were very informative. The other half of the tour was the walkways overlooking the glacier. Make sure you go all the way down and up close. The view is unbelievable and the glacier calves regularly.
Great guides; very friendly and helpful. Fantastic experience that we would highly recommend to anyone visiting El Calafate
This was great. The tour guide was amazing Overall . Good team work and an amazing group. I would do it all over
I know it’s a bit pricey, but i enjoyed the day out, which included a mini trek of the glacier, plus the views later on from the 2.5km walkways were out of this world!
Amazing day. So glad we ended up doing this tour. breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience. Learned so much about the glacier!!!
This is by far one of the coolest things I've ever gotten to do. The entire time we just kept looking around us in awe of where we actually were. Definitely go do this. It's easy with the tour company taking care of everything and the route being kept very safe and clear. Crampons are not hard to walk with if you follow the instructions of your guide. I highly recommend crossing "trek on a glacier" off of your bucket list.
The trip was fun. Guides were decent. Why I only gave it average stars was because Viator WAY overcharged for the trip. I was on the same tour with 2 other English speakers. I paid $395 USD booking through Viator. Another lady stated she paid $250 booking in town. A guy said he paid $280. All these prices for the exact same trip! I used to trust Viator that they gave good rates for tours. Now I will NOT. This was really a rip off compared to what other people paid.
Everything went excellent, well organized, all the tour guides were knowledgeable and helpful, the place is magical.
Minitrek was a great relaxing excursion! The tour hosts were great (thanks to Jorje our driver and Jorjelina our guide). The team at Hielo were very friendly, they are the only company that actually hosts the tour. Many thanks to our guides Sebastian and Miguel who were very informative, kept us safe on the ice. The trek itself was much easier than expected, not very difficult, with some guard rails to assist along the way. Lots of photo opportunities. Whiskey at the end was a great finishing touch.
The experience was amazing.. The only issue was the transport.. too tight. Not enough space in the mini bus and the large one.
This was the most perfect day I could wish for. The drive to the meeting point was part of the experience and I got to experience all seasons in only one hour, so be prepared for anything. The guides were very attentive and careful with their explanations while also being fun. They separated us by language but made sure every group had about 18 persons with two guides. Some of the guests were wearing shoes that could get wet and I would really recommend everyone to wear hiking boots and proper clothing. The ice experience and wearing crampons was enjoyable and not too tiring, go for it! The views and the feeling of walking on ice are a great memory. Take lots of pics!
Amazing trip, our guide was fantastic and knowledgeable. The views were incredible and getting to walk on a glacier was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us!
We had very good guides. Enjoyed this activity very much. Every step during the day went smoothly. Definitely worth it.
