Rapa Nui Astronomical Experience

What a magical experience. The guide/owner Tokerau picked us up at our hotel in his brand new van, comfortable and air-conditioned. Super friendly and engaging, he drove us over to see Moai at sunset. Then we watched the moon rise. Otherwise the park was enveloped in darkness. He provided headlamps and blankets, and he and his brother guided us through the park where he used a laser pointer to describe the starscape. I felt so lucky to be in such a spiritual and precious place at night. Then we went to a second site by the ocean, which was equally as captivating. He and his brother capped off the evening with a surprise. Learning about the culture from native Rapanui was an unexpected integral part of this tour. This tour was the highlight of a 20- day trip through the South Pacific.

Our guide, Tokerau, offered a wonderful sunrise tour despite the weather! He provided binoculars, blankets, and chairs while singing traditional songs. He also provided tea and sweets after moving us to a different area on the island due to rain.

We recently joined a stargazing tour on Rapa Nui, and it became one of the very best experiences of our entire trip. We started in a quiet, dark area by the sea. Tokerau, our wonderful and warm guide, shared the stories of how the Rapa Nui and other Polynesian navigators used the stars to navigate the Pacific, explaining how the sky changes with the seasons and direction you are travelling. Seeing planets, the moon, and constellations through the telescope was incredible, we could feel how much he loves his culture and the sky above it. Tokerau took out his guitar and sang a couple of traditional Rapa Nui songs passed down through generations. What an amazing experience! Later, at Anakena Beach, we took night photos with the moai. Standing beneath the stars with those ancient silhouettes and the Milky Way was surreal. The photos Tokerau took are magical reminders of a night we’ll never forget. This tour is so much more than stargazing — it’s culture, history and music. Tokerau made it extraordinary, and we would recommend it to anyone visiting Rapa Nui.

Toke is an amazing guide. He should be a singer, he has a great voice while singing traditional Rapa Nui songs. At the end, he takes awesome night photos of you in front of the moai 🗿 with the Milky Way behind you!

This was an amazing tour where we learned about the history of navigation as well as had use of a telescope to see planets, the moon, and stars! Totally worth booking! Tokerau took amazing photos of us with his camera and we are super pleased with how they turned out!

Just one word to describe the astrotour: magical! Our guide Tokerau was great! He sang us traditional songs during the night making all surreal! We had very interesting notions about the stars, watched constellations and use a fantastic telescope! We had also a homemade snack and blankets for the cold! Everything was perfect. Ludovica

An unforgettable experience under the stars, in the middle of nowhere. Looking at the night sky through the telescope while listening to our guide’s fascinating explanations was truly special. We also loved learning how the Rapa Nui people used the stars, the ocean waves and even the birds to navigate. One of the most emotional moment was listening to our guide sing one of their traditional songs, accompanied only by the sound of the rocks. It gave us goosebumps. Not sure how to review, since weather prevented us from going. But communication was excellent; we were there 3 nights and the company was willing to try the weather any night for us. Unfortunately, it was cloudy all three nights, but our money was quickly refunded. I hope to go back someday!

MORE THAN A STARGAZING TOUR!! I booked this experience expecting to learn about stars. Instead, I left with something much harder to describe. The night sky over Rapa Nui is breathtaking on its own, but what made this experience special was Tokerau. His passion, knowledge, and storytelling transformed the sky from a collection of distant lights into something deeply human. Every constellation seemed connected to a story, every story connected to a people, and every people connected to the ocean that surrounds this remarkable island. There is a quote I love: “That is Polaris, the North Star. That is how sailors used to find their way home. When I look at you, that’s what I see. I see my way home.” Although this wasn’t part of the tour, it perfectly captures how I felt afterward. For thousands of years, people have looked to the stars for guidance. This experience reminded me that the sky is more than astronomy—it is memory, navigation, connection, and belonging. If you’re visiting Rapa Nui, don’t think of this as simply a stargazing tour. Awesome guide, a very kind person with a huge knowledge of the theme. Furhtermore, speaks English and Spanish, what makes easier for tourists. The tour is a show itself, a great event to do at night, specially because there are few options at night at the island.

I did several tours during my time on Easter Island, and the stargazing tour stood head and shoulders above every single one of them. I honestly cannot recommend it highly enough. What sets this experience apart is how much depth the guides bring. This wasn’t just pointing a telescope at the sky — they wove together the science of the stars with the story of the Rapa Nui people: their Polynesian origins, their extraordinary ocean navigation, their culture and history. It was genuinely educational in the best possible way, and the guides delivered it all with warmth, humor, and real expertise. The telescope itself was impressive and professional-grade, and the nighttime astrophotography session was an absolute highlight — I came away with photos I’ll treasure. The guides made sure every single person in the group had a great experience, not just the ones who already knew astronomy. And the price? Frankly, a steal. This was the best tour I have taken on Rapa Nui. Traditional songs, astronomy, archaeology… all of it was amazing. You must take this tour.

We booked a stargazing excursion and had an amazing evening. We visited beautiful locations, the whole experience was fantastic. Tokerau shared wonderful legends and sang Rapa Nui songs accompanied by his guitar. He provided excellent explanations about the stars, and the view of the universe through the telescope was even better. The homemade cakes and *dulce de leches* were absolutely delicious. Afterward, we drove to the other side of the island—to Anakena—to gaze at the stars, where Tokerau took some beautiful photos of us. It was a truly special experience—simply magical!

Of all the tours I booked on Easter Island, this tour was my favorite. I’m so glad I stayed awake to do the astronomy tour— we could see the Milky Way staring back at us in a way I’ve never witnessed before! Toke was an excellent guide and provided some great history on how the Rapa Nui people utilized the stars and nature to navigate the seas before clearly and patiently pointing out constellations for us to see and setting up a powerful telescope for us to look through. It was incredible to see Jupiter and 4 of its bright moons staring back at us! We were also taken to Anakena beach, where we got the most spectacular view of the Maoi (I think Ahu Nau Nau) with the stars behind and Toke took our picture with his camera! He also gave us more history of the island and its people by singing us native songs— it was truly a beautiful and personal touch to such a special evening. Highly recommend this tour!

This was by far one of the best experiences of my life!! I had traveled all over the world and it was absolutely incredible! First we were picked up on time at designated area and taken to a a secluded spot overlooking the ocean. Our tour guide Tokerau has been doing astronomy tours for 10 years. He told us about our his ancestors used the stars to find the island. Then he sang us a beautiful song in his native Rapa Nui language to tell the story of his ancestors. Then we had a presentation on where the stars were and how to locate them. Next we had a huge telescope to see the stars and constellations. Tokerau lovingly prepared us amazing traditional banana cake, Dulce de leche and brownies. So incredible!!! Another song to honor his culture and his history and then off to the beach to end the evening. We got to have pictures taken by him in front of the MOAI and the Milky Way was out in full glory. Ending with one last song in his native Rapa Nui language. It was a very very emotional and special evening and our host, Tokerau was so incredibly hospitable. Will recommend all my clients that come to this special place to book this tour.

He preset his telescope so even this novice was able to glimpse celestial curiosities! Dark sky photoshoot with mystical Moai backdrop produced a treasured keepsake that will forever bring to mind the stars, scents, & sounds of Rapa Nui. The navel of the world indeed!

It was a wonderful experience from start to finish. It began with an excellent introduction to the basics of astronomy, the history of Polynesia and the Polynesian people. This was followed by the observation of various celestial objects, all in a very friendly atmosphere with refreshments provided. To finish off, a beautiful view of the Milky Way on the beach with the majestic Moai. Unforgettable moments. I highly recommend it.

What I can tell you is we were tired from a full day of discovery and unsure of what we were getting into. Our guide Tokerau was AWESOME! He was a wonderful person, insightful, passionate about his work and very knowledgeable. He didn’t just show and teach us about the stars … he created an amazing experience personalized with his own musical talents and photography skills. It was much more than a night exploring the stars. It was a life experience with a wonderful individual who engaged us in a night to remember!

Tokerau is a very passionate guide. He has excellent knowledge of the stars and planets which he combines with storytelling about the first settlers. He has a great voice and his songs very moving.. Supper under the stars was a nice touch and the photo session at Anakena beach with Moai and the Milky Way in the background a fabulous end to this fantastic trip.

We were very lucky that the other couple did cancel last minute, so it was only me, my wife and our guide Tokerau on the tour. He told us that he doesn't want the service he provides to be a cookie-cutter star gazing tour but an experience. And he definitelly delivered. Highly recommend!

Our guide, Tokerau put together a wonderful experience which taught us the star navigation used by Polynesians to reach and settle on Rapa Nui. He and his brother Itaman set up a telescope for a clear view of Saturn, Jupiter, Orion nebula, and our moon. Tokerau shared stories about Rapa Nui culture, sang songs passed to him by his ancestors, and we sampled local snacks too. The stars were vibrant in the dark sky and even more special when shinning behind the Moai for a picture with them behind us. It was a great night, an informative and very entertaining tour. Well organized. Rich. Fun. Interesting. Great views and explanations! The telescope was effective and we learned a lot about ingenious navigators.

This was not a tour, it was a mind-blowing experience. From the pick up, Tokerau Hey started opening up the doors of knowledge of the Rapa Nui and their knowledge of the sea and the stars. To sit by the ocean, with nothing but moonlight and the sky full of stars. Without much previous knowledge, I learned how to spot precise stars. The telescope experience was amazing. Having a hot drink to sip on, while we explored the skies was another token of the great service. And the ending photo shoot on the beach with the Moai made the ending even mire magical. Tokerau and Itamai go out of their way to provide a pleasurable experience.

We joined Tokerau for a very interesting and fun trip to learn about the navigation of the polynesians, but also about astro photography, and we could take a good look at the night sky through his excellent telescope. Besides, Tokerau is a gifted musician and entertainer, and presented us with hot and cold drinks and delicious po'e.

This was probably the highlight of our time on Rapa Nui. Tokerau is an enthusiastic and engaging guide with excellent English. He drove us to a secluded part of the island, taught us how his ancestors used the stars to navigate, showed us the stars through his brand new telescope and then helped us take some photographs of the stars with the Moai. He provided some surprise and very welcome food, drinks and entertainment along the way. It was a stellar experience - I highly recommend it (and Easter Island Heritage more generally)!

Tokerau is the absolute best guide you could ever imagine. He created a pretty unique tour for us, taking us to photograph Moai during the night with the Milky Way and stars all around, allowing for my photographer friend to really fill her cup with beautiful photos. Then we went to see the sunrise over the Moai and he even prepared coffee and cake for us and sang us traditional songs. He is funny, helpful and knowledgeable and I would go on another night adventure with him any time. 12/10 good job.

We did a private bespoke Astro photography and sunrise at Tongariki tour. It was UNFORGETTABLE… a true highlight of our trip here on Rapa Nui. Tokerau is brilliant … he’s very knowledgeable about the stars, takes great photos of the night sky and was so happy to help me get better pictures. Tokerau and his brother Itamar prepared a surprise for us at Ahu Tongariki: a picnic by starlight, while we admired different planets, constellations, etc. As if this were not enough, we had a musical show where they sang us Rapa Nui songs passed down from generation to generation and a master class on their culture. A highly recommended activity. The company Easter Island Heritage is the most reliable on the island. Having tried 4 different ones, I can say it with authority. Fantastic experience from every point of view, they chose the best evening for us to see the stars, providing everything necessary to fully enjoy the experience, including blankets to protect us from the cold, hot drinks, and a buffet.
