Our Sani Pass tour with Bule was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! He safely guided us through the rugged, winding mountain roads into Lesotho and back to South Africa, making us feel comfortable and in good hands throughout the entire journey. What made the trip especially memorable was Bule’s knowledge and passion for the region. He shared fascinating history about both South Africa and Lesotho, giving us a deeper appreciation of the countries, their cultures, and the people who call these beautiful mountains home. He also recommended great places to eat and shared helpful local tips that made the experience even more enjoyable. The breathtaking scenery, thrilling mountain drive, and opportunity to experience Lesotho made this an incredible adventure from beginning to end. Bule was professional, knowledgeable, helpful, and attentive to our safety, which made all the difference. I would highly recommend Bule to anyone considering the Sani Pass tour. If you want a memorable adventure with a knowledgeable guide who genuinely cares about your experience and safety, this is the tour to take. An absolutely fantastic day that we will remember for years to come!

One of our most popular tours! The Sani Pass Lesotho 4x4 tour leaves from Durban and stops at the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg. Your guide will give you a short tour of the city and visit Mahatma Gandhi’s statue by Pietermaritzburg City Hall. Afterwards the tour moves towards the Drakensberg Mountains and up to the Sani Pass in Lesotho. Passport required.
The Sani Pass is a 33km gravel road that straddles the sheer cliffs of the Drakensberg escarpment in a series of tight Zig Zag curves. The route begins at the Sani Pass Hotel which is 1566m above sea level. You will be travelling in a 4×4 upwards along the narrow road crossing the South African / Lesotho border post which is 1968m above sea level. On route the landscape of KwaZulu-Natal opens-up displaying spectacular views of rolling hills and vast skies. You tour guide will take you to a local’s home to introduce you to a Basotho people in a local village. There you will see how the Basotho people of Lesotho live. Thereafter you will make your way down Sani’s Pass and cross the boarder back into South Africa and head back to Durban.

My driver and guide, Bule, was fantastic! He was punctual, friendly, and a pleasure to spend the day with. He gave me a comprehensive and informative tour of Lesotho and Sani Pass, sharing lots of interesting information along the way. I had a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend him!
we booked a trip to visit Leshoto via the Sani pass. Disappointed because we spent literally less than 60 minutes in the country, and the whole activity lasted only 10.5 hours, although 12 was advertised. felt that our driver wanted just to get through the day as fast as possible, rushing back to Durban ignoring the speed limits. This time should have been spent more meaningfully in Leshoto, unfortunately
Had such a wonderful time driving the famous Sani Pass into Lesotho. Major shoutout to the absolute most amazing guide - Fortune. He was the best driver, most knowledgeable, coolest, most fun, most kind guide. We’re loved this unique and thrilling experience in the Kingdom of Lesotho! 🇱🇸
Bule was our tour guide and he was amazing! This was our first time in South Africa and he welcomed us and educated along the entire drive. He was patient and answered all of our questions while giving detailed information and stops along the way. We had such a great time that we were excited that he was our guide again the next day. The day started off warm but right as we got in the car Bule explained that it would be a lot colder on the mountain. He waited while my husband went back upstairs and got coats for us. So glad we did. This tour is great for families and people seeking exploration. We learned that only 5% of people ever get to visit Lesotho and we are now a part of that group. The drive was long and sometimes rough but well worth it. We felt safe and comfortable with the guide and are already planning our trip back and only plan to tour with Bule! The views are nothing like anything I've ever seen in my life. Be prepared to take lots of pictures and bring a backup battery for your phone.
Bule was my guide and made the whole trip easy, comfortable and fun. Highly recommend going out to Sani Pass with him if it’s something you’re thinking about
Zamani was a fantastic guide (and driver!), knowledgeable about everything from local cultures to local ecosystem biology! Thanks so much for a wonderful day!!!
It's a long drive but worth it to get a feel for Lesotho. However note, the drive up and down the Sani Pass is very rough and steep so is quite uncomfortable for an hour. Also, you will only spend an hour or so in Lesotho as the drive from Durban is around 4 hours each way. The scenery is great and very rural with spectacular views, but this depends on the weather which can be inclement and cool. So be prepared.
My day trip to Lesotho 🇱🇸 was an enjoyable experience, offering numerous scenic views. Fortune, an excellent guide, also possesses a talent for photography 📸 👌
Fortune offered a fantastic tour to and from “the Kingdom in the Sky.” We learned a lot about Lesotho and the Basotho people, and the skyward drive through the Sani Pass was so scenic.
I loved the trip to Sani pass and quick stop in Lesotho! The trip includes a lot of driving, but thanks to the many stops - our guide Fortune would also add some extra stops for pictures - the drive never was boring. We were blessed with great weather, so the drive up to Sani pass was truly spectacular. For me, the pass with it's stunning views was definitely the highlight of the day. The visit to Lesotho was quite short (compared to the overall trip duration), but still worth it and impressive. Despite the short time, you can see the local mountain live and the stop in the traditional village gives some more insight. Would definitely recommend it!
The Sani Pass Tour was an unforgettable adventure. Fortune was an excellent guide — calm, attentive, and very experienced. The mountain road was challenging but incredibly scenic, with spectacular views at every turn. Crossing the border into Lesotho and learning about local village life added a unique cultural touch to the trip. The whole day was well paced, informative, and truly memorable. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking for something special.
We were very lucky to have our skilled guide, Fortune, who had a lot of knowledge about Lesotho and the Basotho people - their culture and language which was very interesting. This is -with no doubt- the most beautiful country border I have been at. A memory for life!
The trip exceeded our expectations, our guide Zamani, was very knowledgeable, friendly, patient and always on time. The drive up and down the pass was so exciting. I highly recommend it.Well organised tour with getting in and out of Lesotho been made seamless!!!
We were in Durban to embark on a cruise, so we looked for a day trip while we were here. This agency was very responsive to email, and answered all of our questions promptly. I was able to pay the 50% deposit via credit card and paid the rest on the day of the trip, also via cc. Our tour guide Fortune arrived promptly at 6AM for our 13-hour tour. We made plenty of interesting stops along the way and he shared stories to make the trip better. The drive up the Sani Pass is spectacular, but very rough. It took over an hour to go the last 8km. Bathroom facilities at the South Africa border facilities are good, and definitely take advantage. The border crossing into Lesotho is straightforward. On the way back the Sani Pass was completely fogged out so it was good to have an experienced guide / driver like Fortune. This isn't a trip I'd want to do on my own. It was a very long day but well worth it.
Firstly, i had a great guide, and a lovely day was had. My problem is with the company. I booked through an agent in Durban. .the agent checked availability with the company, and my booking for Sani pass was confirmed for the next day. A whopping £250 euro was deducted. Moments later I received a text message that the jeep was due a service, and I could go the day after. I felt I had little choice, so I agreed. On the day of the tour, the guide mentioned he had done the pass the day before!!!!!! The tour was obliviously overbooked, and I had been bumped. Don't believe a word this company says.
This was definitely one the best experiences I've had in my 2.5 months in South Africa. The views were absolutely spectacular and my guide and driver Wonder, was exceptional. It is a long drive but the company had a very well maintained, clean 4x4 and Wonder was very accommodating to multiple stops along the way for toilet and snack breaks. Highly Recommend this trip with 1st Zulu Safaris
Thami was an excellent glide!! He was very knowledgeable, professional, courteous, and went out of his way to help me. I learned a lot on the tour from Thami regarding history, cultural significance, and the local nature.
I had an amazing Sani Pass Day Tour from Durban with Zulu Safaris, guided by Thami. He was incredibly friendly and shared fascinating insights about the landscapes, history, and local life along the way. You can tell he’s been doing this route for many years—everything was handled seamlessly from start to finish, which made the whole journey stress-free and enjoyable. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking, and the 4x4 mountain road experience is both exciting and unique. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area—come for the views, stay for the expert guiding and smooth experience. Thank you, Thami, for a memorable day!
Thank was our guide and he was brilliant. It is the perfect day tour. You get to see a lot of South Africa (with stops, explaining the history etc). Lesotho is stunning! I learnt so much about it that I never knew.
I had a wonderfull day, with experienced driver and guide Fortune, he knows perfectly the highlights and stops for making the best pictures.
We had an amazing day at the Sani Pass, thanks to our tour guide Fortune. The drive through part of Lesotho was just an amazing cultural and panoramic experience. I would 100% recommend this tour to anyone interested in visiting the Sani Pass and Lesotho.
This tour is a very educational tour with additional information not highlighted in the tour. I’d take it again just for the views. Don’t miss it!
Magnificent tour with Thami our guide! Going up the Sani pass is such a breathtaking taking experience! The stop at the village was so heartwarming, I still remember conversation with the young lady Agnes. I love Lesotho!
Had the best day in Lesotho. My tour guide and driver, Fortune was the best. We had great conversation, he was knowledgeable and didn't mind being my official photographer. We made stops along the scenic route until we finally made it. Despite the weather, I had a wonderful time and truly enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend.
Very professional service with pickup at the Hotel and plenty of stops along the way. Good educational info for some sights along the way. The guide was knowledgeable and a save driver. Even gave good tips about souvenir price and when to tip the locals how much. Four stars only because of the price simply did not match the type of car used. Weak A/C was barely able to cool the front seat area but not the back. Seats were some plastic material so one was sweaty at the back all the time. One of the back doors did not open properly.
What an amazing day, everything was perfect. The tour is a must do historically and visually. Spectacular views from the winding road that takes you through no-man’s land between the SA and Lesotho check points. The village we visited was a real eye opener to the way of life of the local people. Or Blanket people. Fortune our guide was fantastic, knowledgeable, polite, helpful, caring. Overall great guy to take you on this tour.
This was one of the best experiences we've ever had. Our Zulu Safaris guide, Themi, was incredibly kind, considerate and patient. Themi has a knack of being present and available to help while also giving us space to enjoy the experience privately. He is very knowledgeable and an excellent driver, expertly navigating the windy mountain pass. He also taught us some Zulu words along the way. Most importantly, he was so kind, going above and beyond to make sure we felt comfortable and safe. He even waited with us after our tour to ensure that our ride home arrived to pick us up. We had Themi as a guide for two tours on two different days. He made both tours exceptional and we are so grateful for that. We are hoping to book a tour with him again next year.
Freddie was an excellent knowledgeable guide. Beautiful day. Prepare for a long drive though. But it’s acenic
I felt so lucky to have Fortune as my guide for this incredible tour! He was funny, kind, knowledgeable, and created the perfect all around experience. He truly made this experience something superb. Additionally! pictures don’t do this tour justice! It was so beautiful around every turn. Highly highly recommend!
Our 1st trip was in Sani Pass and Lesotho. Our guide Thami was so professional, knowledgeable, friendly and an excellent driver! The view in Drakensberg is breathtaking, the Basotho people were friendly and we had an amazing time at the Highest Pub of Africa! On the 2nd day our guide was Mr Sotiris, a friendly, kind and a careful person, who knows details and he makes you feel special. We had access to Zulu Medicine Market, a truly unique place! We totally recommend 1st Zulu safaris if you want to have once in a lifetime experience!!
This is a wonderful experience. Our guide Frederick was great, and the masotho people are very nice and receptive. The view is breathtaking, a must see!
We had the good fortune to have Fortune as our guide. He was ab excellent driver, an informative guide and a lovely person. The views were spectacular, the drive ‘fun’ and the Lesotho people were friendly and welcoming. A thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying trip
Very unreliable vehicle. On the way back from the top the of Sani pass the 4 wheel drive system on the cheap Mahendra vehicle would not work. After several attempts the driver had to come down the steep mountain track in 2 wheel drive. This put us in serious risk. The journey down hill took twice the time . Other tour operators we saw had much more reliable Toyota's . I will not recommend others taking risk especially on this Sani pass on this unreliable vehicles.
Amazing experience..! Tour guide Thami was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We learnt a lot and saw animals along the way. Fabulous Day..!
It's been an amazing trip and Thami was a perfect guide. Lesotho is a great experience and the trip together with Thami is absolutely recommendable and worth each cent!!!
Thami really knew his stuff, history/culture of the area. He was extremely friendly and stopped at the perfect times for pictures and refreshments.
What an amazing trip!! Would highly recommend. Bafana was our guide and was just brilliant. So much fun and some amazing scenery.
This tour is truly amazing, prepared to get WOWed by the beautiful and stunning scenery all along the way, from Underberg, up to Lesotho. It’s also a must-do activity in South Africa. And I will let my photos speak for itself for the beautiful scenery in this tour. Also, it is very convenient to start and end the tour in Durban, as I can easily find a flight with time suitable for me and have other activities before and after the tour in Durban as well. A special shoutout to the guide of the tour, Thami, for bringing me all the way to and from Duran and Lesotho. I have learned more about Lesotho as well as South Africa from him. He also got a very nice music playlists that matched this road trip in the countryside. I have enjoyed the tour very much!
Incredible experience! I booked it on a whim while staying in Durban looking for things to do and I do not regret it one bit. Pick up from the hotel was smooth and had a nice drive north with a man named Masolo (sp?) to the meeting point before heading out in the 4x4. My guide Grant was very friendly and gave a lot of extra details of the land from his personal experience growing up in the region. He handled all of the passports and documents to ensure an easy entry and exit from Lesotho. The drive up the pass was exciting, you really feel every twist and turn and it is simply amazing that humans were able to do it before the creation of the roads and 4x4 vehicles. The views from Sanni Pass were beautiful, and visiting the highest pub in Africa was a nice bonus! We drove all the way up the road despite the snow and ice. Had a great time in the village learning a little bit about the Basotho people's culture and getting a small taste of how they live.
Superb trip that took me through the mountains and the pass. I am so happy I joined. The booking and organisation was super smooth and Freddy was super patient and knowledgeable with all the questions and pictures.
Freddie was fantastic! Such a great day ,very much worth the time and money ! I was picked up by my hotel and it was a drive up to the highest point in Sani Pass and also the highest pub In Africa ! The ride is long but absolutely it:) Freddie was very knowledgeable, professional and got out of his way to show us everything and make sure we have a fantastic experience! Thank you so so so much 😊 Highly recommended!!
This was a remarkable tour. Freddy, our guide was the best. He allowed the tour to be "ours." We were able to stop and capture beautiful moments along the way and had an amazing adventure.
Great tour !!! I liked everything, the Drakenberg mountains, the village and the highest pub in Africa !!! On the downside, it seems the few villages behind the border get too much used to tourism and the highest pub in Africa doesn’t serve draught beer
Great adventure with a safe and organised company. Highly recommend, cars are modern and pickup from hotel is convenient and efficient.
I had an excellent day which happened to be my birthday driven by a very skilled and kind Thami. From being picked up from the hotel, comfortable trail truck and the majestic views, my experience exceeded my expectations . I would recommend this experience to everyone, you will not be disappointed.
From pick up at The Oyster Box the disappointment kept coming. We were told an extra R400 to be picked up there (it was on the included list) to my husband and I being separated in 2 different vehicles to having to buy our lunch at a grocery store instead of eating lunch at the highest point pub. The actual climb up the pass and the view were amazing as promised Customer appreciation was none. The driver of my car was on the phone the whole time making new reservations for the next days. I would not recommend this tour guide.
This was a great tour. The views along the way are beautiful, but they really become stunning when you get to the pass. The tour guide, Frederick, was very knowledgeable and nice and was a great driver! The trip into Lesotho was good and the pub certainly not to miss!
We really enjoyed the experience, l will go back there anytime with Zulu safaris. They are amazing, the tour guides took their time to explain about the different places we went to. We took lots of photos, went to Africa’s highest pub and the cultural village.
Good communication from the company and the guide was a great driver (you need to be for this trip). Good way to easily see Lesotho including nature and culture. Just bear in mind that it’s a long day of driving—between transfer and the Sani Pass itself, you spend most of the day in the car.
