We had a great day exploring the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains and visiting the historic Nelson Mandela Capture Site with our guide, Sboniso. He was friendly, helpful, and ensured we had a comfortable and enjoyable experience. We especially appreciated having sufficient time to enjoy lunch, explore, and do some shopping without feeling rushed. A wonderful way to experience South Africa’s natural beauty and history. Highly recommended!

Experience the Midlands Meander - Routes span more than 50 miles between Pietermaritzburg and the uKhahlamba-Drakensburg World Heritage Site including many back roads. The Midlands Meander isn’t a single attraction at all, but rather a network of more than 150 artisans, activities, restaurants, lodging and tours that have banded together to promote the rural but creative Midlands Region of KwaZulu-Natal.
A visit to the Drakensberg Mountains offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy breathtaking scenery while taking on a moderate hiking trail suitable for most fitness levels. Surrounded by rolling green hills, towering peaks, and crystal-clear streams, the Drakensberg provides a serene escape into nature. Hikes are carefully chosen to balance adventure and accessibility, allowing you to enjoy panoramic views, discover hidden caves, and encounter unique flora and birdlife without overly strenuous effort. It’s an unforgettable way to connect with the natural beauty of one of South Africa’s most iconic mountain ranges.
A visit to Howick Falls, located in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, showcases one of South Africa’s most dramatic waterfalls, plunging approximately 95 meters into a deep gorge. Surrounded by lush greenery and scenic walking trails, the falls offer breathtaking views, perfect for photography or simply taking in the natural beauty. Local legends and rich history add cultural significance, making Howick Falls both a spectacular and meaningful stop on any Midlands tour.
A visit to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site near Howick provides a poignant insight into South Africa’s struggle for freedom. The site commemorates the place where Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. Visitors can explore the striking stainless steel sculpture of Mandela, the informative museum exhibitions, and the surrounding grounds, reflecting on his legacy of courage, resilience, and reconciliation.

This tour was very interesting and educational. Unfortunately the weather was not on my side and the rain took over. So there was no view of the Drachensberg Mountains. Howick falls were spectacular and Nelson Mandela Museum very interesting. My guide Mzweh was very good and friendly. Enjoyed my day. I had a few question prior to my tour and they were all answered quickly and I also was given a telephone number of my guide so I or he could contact me. Very impressed. Recommend this tour and company.
A very beautiful experience in Drakensberg Mountains. definitely some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. The mountains, the valleys, the vegetation, quite out of this world those views.
We really enjoyed the Drakensberg Mountains, they are breathtaking and so beautiful! The hike was on a perfect weather day, not too hot or cold, blue skies and white puffy clouds. Our guide on the hike was excellent and knowledgable. Our driver was great to get us to all of the spots safe and sound. We equally enjoyed the Nelson Mandela Capture Site and Howick Falls.
I visited the Drakensburg mountains in south africa recently. We met up with various family members for a weekend and had a fantastic time.My accomodation was superp overlooking the valley and the drakensburg sun hotel below. The scenery was brilliant. It is such a calm and peacefull place and you can notice the fresh air all around. On the last day whilst having breakfast, a family of zebras came to our front lawn to feed on the grass! What an amazing experience this was and will be cherished forever. South Africa is generally such a wonderful place to visit and with the strong pound and other European currencies, it is great value for money. Will definately visit again.
The Drakensberg Mountains is certainly one of the World Heritage Sites, a beautiful place to visit and see on the Drakensberg Mountains and Nelson Mandela Capture Site Full Day Safari
A perfect day in the Deakensberg Mountains, such nice hiking. This was the Drakensberg Mountains & Nelson Mandela Capture Site Full Day Safari
The Drakensberg Mountains & Nelson Mandela Capture Site Full Day Safari tour was really amazing. The Drakensberg, one of the most beautiful that we have ever seen
Avoid African Sun safaris. They did not arrive on time and when contacted were dismissive and unhelpful. When a guide finally arrived, we started on the tour 21/2 hours later which meant we were chasing the clock all day. The guide, Brian, called in on his day off, saved the day and did a good job. The money paid does not correspond with the service provided. Considering all the positive experiences we had in S A, this company was a did. Bev O'Connell
Though a long drive from the Port of Durban to Drakensberg Mountains, it worths a visit. Wish I have more time to hike 7 km to the top and see the rock arts.
Big fail : the goal of our trip was mainly to go for hiking which was not the case at all. We did the fall then Mandela’s capture site as mentioned in the details then we took the road to Drakensberg mountains super excited to start our hike. The landscape was nice on the road I have to say, but upon our arrival and after 2h of drive, the guide informed us that we are going to go down to see another fall and then back again to the car, which was literally 30 mins walk, back and forth to see a small waterfall, instead of taking the trail path. We were super disappointed because that doesn’t match with the description or the pictures in the tour at all !!!! The description should be adjusted by the tour or Viator because it is really misleading, at the end we felt we were scammed, we paid 344€ for 2 persons to see a fall, have a museum tour and walk 30 mins in a valley. The guides were nice and friendly, but there were no explanations on what we are seeing or doing, it was more a driver then a guide. At the I don’t recommend it, a big waste of money.
Timber was a great guide. The driver was a bit late picking our large group up from the cruise terminal. Due to no fault of the tour guide, we were on an extremely limited time frame and could not do the tour we purchased (Our cruise drastically changed to scheduled time in the port). Timber was able to come up with a new plan quickly without additional charges. He took us to Phezulu Park where did an amazing safari! There is a reptile portion and a short game drive through the reserve in a 4x4/ open air jeep. We saw many giraffe and zebras! They were very close to the vehicle. Very cool experience. We only wish we had more time to do this capture site tour. We recommend booking with this company and would like to do this tour in the future
This was a great day in the Drakensberg Mountains. A really beautiful part of South Africa. Very nice. Very peaceful. Absolutely enjoyed this tour
2hours late arrival for pick up due to broken car is not OK Long trip and stressed time line The visits were nice but short
This trip to hiking in the mountains, waterfalls and South African history was as solo traveler a great experience. However you need to be fit as a mountain goat otherwise you will not reach the views. Good walking shoes, hat and water bottle are essentials! It is a long drive however the views on the way is fantastic after leaving the motorway and well on the paths you can´t stop looking and taking photographs.
Timba, our guide for the day, picked us up promptly at 7:30 AM. He took us to all of the sites mentioned on the itinerary. I was especially impressed with the Nelson Mandela capture site and the sculpture outside. Timba didn't rush us but kept us on schedule. We stopped for a very enjoyable lunch along the way (at our cost). The ride was a bit long but enjoyable. Seeing the Drackensberg Mountains was impressive even if it was a bit cloudy. Timba was friendly and very helpful and answered my many questions. :) I would recommend this excursion and using this tour agency. Thanks so much Timba!
Hours in a small “private car” and hardly any time to see Drakenberg. Drakenberg is certainly worth seeing but not on a day of Durban. The relationship between riding, being stuck in traffic and hobbling over detours to the actual hike in Dralenberg is not right. We had to cancel the last 3 goals after the first goal at the end, as it was too long.
