Fascinating museum and story behind it from the family that run it and their diving expeditions.
A fabulous small museum showing a huge family collection created over 20 years. The owner is clearly very passionate about the environment & having an outlet to show the changing planet. We had a great time. Make sure you do the quiz!
Surprisingly small space and yet surprisingly lot shells in display. You can spend nice 45-60 mins looking at them but for an average persons that's about it. No AC inside so it can be pretty hot.
What a beautiful find! We spent some time at the shell museum and really enjoyed. The owner was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, very lovely. The admission fee was reasonable for the experience and goes towards keeping it going. There were not many others there at our visit so it was lovely and quiet, we had plenty of space to enjoy and take our time. This was a lovely experience for my partner and I. I also purchased a beautiful handmade bracelet made of ethically sourced shells, such a lovely keepsake of a beautiful town. I would definitely recommend.
We stumbled accross this beautiful exhibition on our day trip to Cavtat and spent a very pleasant hour learning about shells and the animals which lived in them. The collection includes shells from all over the world, many of which were collected by the owner and her family. She is clearly very passionate about the oceans and the animals who live in them. She was very friendly and happy to explain to us about some of the exhibits and answer our questions. If you get the chance to visit I would strongly recommend it, it is a truely one of a kind collection.
Lovely experience with such an extensive collection.
Izs fun looking at shelfs its very good expiriance highly recomended
I love shells, so this museum was a must see. It did not disappoint. This family owned collection has been loving acquired over the years, showcasing a plethora of various exhibits from around the world. It is an affordable activity to suit all ages and worth a look if you are in Cavtat. Various shell themed items are available to purchase too.
A hidden gem We came to the shell museum this afternoon, it did not disappoint. The variety on display, the way everything had been presented and options if you are visiting with children was first class. Whatever the weather, make this a stop whilst you’re here. Thank you for your generosity with your knowledge and passion.
Lovely family-run museum. Friendly and helpful owner. Fun activities for kids and interesting for grownups.
We visited this museum as we were staying in Cavtat and looking to experience something different than the bars and restaurants that we'd already visited. This museum has an amazing collection of shells, very well curated and displayed. It also has a fascinating video with some incredible shell facts. The lady who owned the museum was lovely and talked to us about her family collection and how they'd collected the shells from around the world. She also offered even offered us a couple of shells from her personal collection as my wife wanted some local shells. She also offers shells for sale. A lovely collection, highly recommended if you have an interest in nature and/or shells.
We visited recently during our stay in Cavtat and this small gem of a museum captured my heart. The love, care and passion of the curator and her family comes across in this unexpectedly moving experience. The shells are displayed beautifully and there is an atmosphere of reverence that honestly was so thoughtful and touching. Definitely worth a visit. Take your time and let the space and the shells captivate you.
A very interesting visit. The lady who gave us a guided tour was very informative and made us aware of a world 🌎 we didn't know anything about! Mother nature is indeed wonderful in the creation of this amazing creatures who adapt to their habitat in the most spectacular fashion. The story of how a pearl is formed in nature and how many has used that information to create pearls today was an outstanding memory for me Id certainly recommend 👌 the guided tour.
We called on to the Shell 🐚 Museum on our visit to Cavtat. It was beautifully laid out and very informative. Beautiful paintings also
It was a fantastic relaxing experience, perusing through centuries of shells and decades of one family's dedication to collecting and documenting their finds.
A lovely little museum in the heart of Cavtat, just a short walk from the bus station. Despite its small size, it holds a rich and diverse collection of shells from oceans around the world. The lady running the museum was incredibly kind and informative, happy to explain everything in detail. Great for a short solo visit or with family. A hidden gem worth stopping by! 🥰
What a find. We were recommended this museum by a fellow traveller in our hotel. We were greeted by the owner who gave us a brief introduction to molluscs and shells and explained the history behind the museum and her passion for the collection helped by a brief video explaining molluscs and shells. It was fascinating to see all the different shells, sizes, colours etc. This is worth a visit even if you have no interest in shells etc.
On our first stroll through Cavtat, we saw that there was a shell museum and immediately put it on our list of things to do. It took us a few days to get around to it, but it was worth the wait. On a surface level, it is a very large collection of shells housed in a very old building, which has, at times, also been used as a church and as a theatre, but if you take a moment to get the back story behind the collection and perhaps more importantly, use your time in the room to reflect on both the wonders of the natural world and our responsibilities within it, I think you will find this a very enriching experience. When we entered, we were greeted by Ines, who welcomed us and gave us an overview of her families devotion to travel and to the treasures of the sea. Her passion and depth of knowledge was a beautiful thing to experience and set exactly the right tone for the duration of our visit. Outside the museum, there are cafes, bars, cruises and yes, no little natural beauty, but some thoughtful time spent inside the museum will give you the opportunity to develop a greater appreciation of all of that. Thank you Ines for adding to the perspective.
An amazing place seeing shells from around the world. Owner very informative and sharing her hobby well worth a visit xx
What a lovely museum, with such an unique and beautiful family story. The woman who made it possible for this museum and collection to be there was so nice to us, she took her time to help and explain many thing about the shells, collection and the family business, and all that with great passion. The collection is beautiful and it was wonderful to see the beauty of the sea! I would totally recomend going there. For kids there is also a small interactive part and there are some handmade juwellery for sale.
We spent 30 mins to 1 hour looking around the museum and chatting to the lovely owner. This is a beautiful family collection amassed over several decades and beautifully displayed. The collection is housed in part of the church and there is a newly restored (and rather large) flag painted by Vlaho Bukovac on display here too which is beautiful. Lots of beautiful souveniers and handmade jewellery by the owner are available to buy her3 too. I would highly recommend paying this place a visit.
Wonderful place with a lovely personalised introduction from the lady who runs it. We could really tell her passion and knowledge for this important area of marine conservation. Thoroughly recommended
An extensive shell collection, beautifully displayed with informative labels. Amazing colours and shapes to view at your leisure. I recommend a visit.
Very interesting (especially due to the inclement weather!). Run by a very knowledgeable and passionate person! Also kid-friendly, with suitable extra activities for them.
We really enjoyed the museum, we learned so much from the video, and the owner was so passionate about shells, it was a really worthwhile visit.
What an inspiring and wonderful collection of shells from all over the world that the family has collected over several generations and are clearly very proud of! Made to feel very welcome.
Absolutely amazing, the owner was very passionate about her collection and extremely informative and friendly. See you again in October! A must see in Cavtat.
An amazing hour or so spent at the shell museum. It was so interesting to learn about all the different molluscs, especially the endangered ones. And the jewellery we brought was beautiful !
Stunning collection of shells and all things sea life. From fossils to clams. Wasn’t expecting much and thought the whole experience was really wholesome. Family run collection which is now on display in an old church gallery. Which still has the original paintings on display as well as the shell collection. Lady (forgot her name) was really welcoming and loves what she does which made our visit more authentic.
The remarkable shell museum was created as a labour of love by a family of divers to educate people on the fragility of the natural world. They have built up an extensive collection of beautiful shells from all over the world on their travels. These rare and precious shells which opened my mind to the sheer variety of shells, in rich colours, shapes and textures. A hidden gem well worth a visit.
Such an apt museum for its location, fitting in well within the beautiful and charming town of Cavtat. Unique and quaint, with a wealth of shells, facts and some art work is also on display. This collection is housed in a lovely building and is exhibited wonderfully. There is a factual video, self guided tour and some lovely souvenirs. The lovely lady that runs this is both welcoming and knowledgable. Showing passion for what she does. Knowing this museum was within the town was our deciding factor to holiday here and it didn’t disappoint. Visit early in your stay to discover any additional events they may be holding during the week. Thank you for a unique experience which made my daughters day : )
Beautiful museum. Family run. Exhibits are stunning and the owners are very knowledgeable. We also bought some gorgeous souvenirs.
The whole experience was simply amazing. The owner is very informative and one of the main collectors, fantastic family history and memories made and shared through a passion for shells and the natural world - something that we should all experience and a definite MUST in Cavtat. Thank you so much for sharing this with us! We will be back
Do not miss a trip to this special museum when you are in Cavtat. It's very centrally located to the old town. You can see the passion everywhere in the exhibitions and in the items left out for kids. The proprietor oozed passion also, it's always such a massive pleasure to be in it's presence! The proprititar also shows documentaries on Wednesday nights in the lovely room which looks like it was an old theatre perhaps.
This was a very pleasant experience. A very nice and knowledgeable owner, and a great collection of shells. The children got small nice gifts. Highly recommended!
A truly unique museum curated by one family with a passion for showcasing the beauty of the sea and protecting the biodiversity. A great way to spend 30 mins - 1 hour, the shells were beautiful and fascinating and you could ask as many questions as you liked. The curator was eager to answer them and tell you the stories of the shells. A very peaceful spot within Cavtat!
Only been open for just over a year and full of shells and corals from all over the world, sourced by the owners own diving experience as well as purchasing from other collections. All the corals and shells (thousands) are individually listed and named. You are also given a ticket from which you can scan your own audio guide onto your mobile phone. There has been a lot of work put into it and no doubt the collection will continue to expand. Yasmin and I wish them all the best in their endevours.
This is a family that started diving and collecting shells and fossils from all over the world, there is a fossil that is 166 million years old ! Very interesting and some very strange and wonderful shells and fossils, the lady told us everything we wanted to know and how it all started, well worth a visit.
Before visiting this museum did not know what to expect. A whole new world was opened up. This is a collection of shells found by a family involved in sea diving who decided to open a museum to show the public the world of sea shells. Amazing shapes, sizes and colours of sea shells can be found in three very long glass cabinets. Each shell has information on small cards giving detailed information as to the type of shell, where in the world it was found and who first discovered that shell type. Fascinating experience was had here, certainly unusual. A family member was on hand to answer any questions if needed.
A very fascinating museum filled with a variety of different shells of varying sizes, shapes, and colours. We were guided round the exhibits by the wonderful Enis who was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us her own personal insight and stories on how the shells were made and acquired. I would highly recommend attending this local museum.
Really fascinating visit, thousands of lovely shells from all over the world. The owner is really enthusiastic and will explain anything for you. Very easy to find, just behind a church near where the boat from Dubrovnik docks. Well worth a visit.
A wonderful story about nature and all that it hides from us at first glance. Thank you Ines for everything! A visit to this little gem will certainly not be a waste of time. All recommendations!
We were given a tour of the shell museum by the owner who was very passionate and knowledgeable about the collection. It was very interesting and beautiful. I would highly recommend a visit.
This was a fantastic thing to do. A little gem in the heart of Cavtat. We were only in town for one night but managed to have a private tour of the collection. The guide was very knowledgable and we left knowing so much more about sheela and marine life than before we went. I would highly recommend a trip to see this fantastic collection.
An absolutely fabulous addition to Cavtat! My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely visit again! Everything is laid out so well and the staff has an amazing knowledge of all the shells! Definitely go visit. It is tucked up the top of the steps beside the church. Beautiful paintings are on display too.
We visited the shell museum and the lovely lady told us a lot about the different kinds and families of seashells - we learned a lot of fun facts. Absolutely a gem you have to visit! We loved it and look forward to visit again the next time we are in Cavtat. Would absolutely reccomend stopping by for a fun visit and to support this new additon to Cavtats exhibitions.
Filled with serenity, shells from all over the world, much knowledge and many stories. Especially nice how the hostess showed us her photos and gave our children a shell each.
This lovely little collection of shells is well worth a visit, especially if you are lucky like us to get a guided tour by Ines, whose family have collected the shells themselves. Ines brought the collection to life for us and it was fascinating to hear her experience of the changing climate on the local marine life. The children were allowed to choose a small shell to bring home which they were delighted with.
The entry was 50 kuna per person and well worth a visit. The owner very kindly gave us a tour and explained some of the history behind the shells (they've built up this collection over a very long period and felt it was time to share it with the world) alongside some informative bits and pieces around the shells inhabitants such as why the shells have developed in a particular shape or colour, where they were found and their age. We really enjoyed the exhibit, it's certainly something a little different and not something we've come across on our travels.
