Ireland’s Gardens in Autumn: A Private 10-Day Journey

Private Journey To The Gardens Of Ireland In Autumn

Love

Duration

10 Days

Starts In

Dublin

Route

Dublin, Waterford, Bantry, Killarney, Clare

While spring gets the crowds, autumn is when Ireland's gardens reveal their quieter, more sophisticated side — and this immersive ten-day private journey explores it at its finest. From Dublin's elegant Georgian squares to the subtropical shores of Bantry Bay, from the wild limestone pavements of The Burren to the mist-draped valleys of County Wicklow, this is Ireland in its most contemplative season: woodland canopies turning copper and gold, borders settling into their last rich color before winter, and estates emptied of summer's coach parties. Expert private guides, exclusive after-hours access, and intimate encounters with the gardeners themselves ensure every visit goes far beyond the ordinary. Alongside world-class horticulture, the journey weaves in falconry, Jaunting Cars, Atlantic clifftops, and the warm hospitality of historic country house hotels. For the passionate plantsperson or curious traveler, this is Ireland at its most beautiful, personal, and unforgettable — in the season most gardeners quietly consider their favorite.

Itinerary

Day
1

Day 1: Arrival in Dublin

Met on arrival by your private driver and guide, you transfer to your hotel, settling in after the long journey with time to rest before the evening ahead. Dublin in autumn takes on a particular charm — Georgian squares dusted in falling leaves, softer light along the Liffey, and a slower rhythm than the summer months bring. Depending on arrival time, there's an opportunity for a gentle orientation stroll through the city center, taking in Merrion Square's elegant Georgian façades and doorways, or simply easing into the trip with a quiet evening at leisure. This evening, an informal private talk with a renowned Irish plantsman offers a first, intimate glimpse into the world of contemporary Irish gardening — a fitting overture to the ten days of horticultural exploration ahead, as the country's finest gardens shift into their most dramatic and colorful season.

Day

Day 2: Gardens of Wicklow, Part One

Travel southwest into County Wicklow for two exclusive private garden visits with sibling gardeners in one of Ireland's most celebrated horticultural corners. At the first garden, a five-acre botanical landscape set against fifteen acres of autumn woodland showcases one of Ireland's largest private plant collections, where late-season grasses, dahlias, and foliage color bring the garden's theatrical planting schemes to a dramatic crescendo. This afternoon, a personal tour of a second garden reveals a more intimate three-acre setting surrounding a charming Victorian cottage, where a passion for unusual perennials, shade-lovers, and ornamental grasses shines through borders holding onto texture and color later than most, alongside a fading flower meadow and plants propagated from seed collected on global plant-hunting expeditions. A wonderfully intimate glimpse into two remarkable gardening minds at their most reflective time of year.

Day 3: Gardens of Wicklow, Part Two

Continue exploring County Wicklow with two iconic gardens. Mount Usher, dating to 1860, is a plant-lover's paradise spanning 22 acres along the River Vartry — home to some 5,000 species and renowned for autumn color so striking that Monty Don has called it one of his favorite gardens in the world in any season. This afternoon, Powerscourt Gardens offers a majestic contrast: grand Italianate and French formal terraces, sweeping statuary, and ornamental lakes, its beech avenues and maples turning brilliant shades of amber against Sugar Loaf Mountain. Conclude with a short drive to Powerscourt Waterfall — at 398 feet, Ireland's highest — cascading through a landscape of 200-year-old Beech and Oak at the peak of their autumn display.

Day
4

Day 4: Japanese Gardens & Lismore Castle

Departing Dublin southward, visit the Irish National Stud — the heartbeat of Ireland's thoroughbred heritage — where you'll observe magnificent racehorses and meet retired champions including the wonderfully named Beef or Salmon. Within the estate, the celebrated Japanese Gardens (crafted 1906–1910) trace a philosophical "Life of Man" through water, stone, and flora, their maples turning fiery red and gold in a display many consider even finer than spring's, while St. Fiachra's Garden honors Ireland's patron saint of gardeners through serene woodland and monastic hermitages. This afternoon, explore Lismore Castle Gardens, where a remarkably intact 17th-century walled garden contrasts with a more informal 19th-century landscape shaped by Joseph Paxton — all anchored by a magnificent historic Yew Avenue, evergreen and unchanging against the season's shifting color.

Day
5

Day 5: Mount Congreve & Tourin House

Travel east toward Waterford to visit Mount Congreve, widely regarded as one of the great gardens of the world and one of Ireland's finest autumn destinations. Home to one of the largest private plant collections on earth, the gardens were shaped from the 1950s onward by the visionary Ambrose Congreve, drawing inspiration from Exbury Gardens — an estate famous for its acers and autumn foliage trails. The estate's 1760 house anchors six generations of family history. This afternoon, Tourin House — an elegant 1840 Italianate residence — opens its doors for an exclusive visit. Stroll gardens of rare mature trees stretching to the River Blackwater, their canopies turning at the water's edge, explore the private quarters, and enjoy coffee with members of the historic Jameson Family for a rare and personal glimpse into Irish heritage.

Day
6

Day 6: Bantry Bay & Garinish Island

Head west to the palatial Bantry House, whose seven Italianate terraces descend dramatically toward the bay — the "staircase to heaven," quieter now and softened by autumn haze. Inside, exceptional treasures include Versailles fireplaces, Marie Antoinette tapestries, and Pompeii tile panels. A delightful boat journey across Bantry Bay brings you to Garinish Island — Ilnacullin — where the Head Gardener welcomes you to this extraordinary island garden. Created in the early 20th century by architect Harold Peto, Garinish combines formal Italianate structure with a breathtaking diversity of subtropical plants, kept lush late into the year by the Gulf Stream's warming influence. The Italian Garden, Grecian Temple, and sweeping mountain views make this an unforgettable experience for any garden lover, with none of summer's crowds.

Day
7

Day 7: Killarney & Muckross Gardens

Immerse yourself in Killarney National Park, Ireland's first, spanning 26,000 acres of mountains, forests, and three serene lakes, at their most photogenic as bracken and beech turn bronze across the hillsides. Travel through the dramatic Gap of Dunloe and pause at Ladies View, the celebrated panorama admired by Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting. At Muckross Estate, the Head Gardener provides a personal welcome before you explore a tranquil natural rock garden and a recently developed arboretum, its curated collection of trees and shrubs at the height of autumn color. End the day in timeless style aboard a privately reserved Jaunting Car, clip-clopping through areas closed to motor vehicles — a deeply peaceful and wholly authentic way to savor this extraordinary landscape under the shorter, golden light of the season.

Day
8

Day 8: Onward to County Clare

Travel north via Limerick, Ireland's third city — founded by Vikings in the 9th century — before arriving at your final base, a storied castle hotel in County Clare where heritage and modern luxury are seamlessly entwined. Your welcome is memorable: the ancient art of falconry brings you face-to-face with magnificent birds of prey, including falcons, owls, hawks, and eagles, all the more striking against a backdrop of turning parkland trees. Later, take a guided evening walk through the property's beautifully maintained Walled Garden with the Head Gardener, uncovering the history, planting schemes, and seasonal highlights of this carefully tended space as it settles into autumn. Settle in for your final two nights amid turrets, parkland, and the gracious rhythms of Irish country house life.

Day
9

Day 9: Cliffs of Moher & The Burren

Your final full day delivers two of Ireland's most stirring landscapes. A guided walk along the Cliffs of Moher — towering over the Atlantic and framed by dramatic sea stacks — offers stories, hidden trails, and ever-changing seascapes at a leisurely, immersive pace, with autumn's clearer air often delivering exceptional visibility. Inland, The Burren reveals a landscape unlike any other: vast limestone pavements sheltering rare flora, more than 80 Neolithic tombs, hundreds of ancient cooking sites, and up to 500 ring forts. Designated a Special Area of Conservation, this "fertile rock" carries millennia of human history. Your private local specialist guide brings its geology, archaeology, and folklore vividly to life in a truly unforgettable finale.

Day
10

Day 10: Departure from Shannon

After a final morning at your Clare hotel, you are transferred to Shannon Airport, where your private driver ensures a seamless and unhurried departure. As your journey draws to a close, the memories of ten extraordinary autumn days — from Dublin's Georgian gardens to Atlantic clifftops, from subtropical island retreats to ancient limestone wildernesses — will no doubt linger long. Ireland, experienced in its most golden season, reveals a country of remarkable beauty, profound history, and genuine warmth. Safe travels, and we hope this journey has been everything you wished for.
