Gewandhaus Dresden, Autograph Collection

I have stayed at the Gewandhaus Dresden several times and have always appreciated the hotel’s atmosphere, location, and overall character. Unfortunately, my most recent stay was very disappointing from a service perspective. I arrived at approximately 3:30 p.m., but my room was not ready. While I understand that delays can happen, the front desk clerk was unable to provide any estimate of when the room would be available. Even worse, the interaction was rude and unwelcoming — a memorable example of Eastern German hospitality. My room was eventually ready after 7:00 p.m., but no one notified me. I had to follow up myself, which is unacceptable for a hotel of this level. As a Marriott Platinum member and a repeat guest, I expected much better communication and service. I still like the hotel itself, especially its atmosphere and location, but this experience was extremely disappointing. A delayed room can be forgiven; rude service and a complete lack of communication are much harder to accept, espessially from a hotel which is a part of Autograph collection.

Gewandhaus is now tied (with Hotel du Lac in Lugano) as my #1 favorite boutique hotel in all of Europe. Hotel du Lac is still family owned; Gewandhaus is now part of Marriott, but I think of them together because Gewandhaus still provides the personalized luxury of a family owned European boutique hotel. Superb staff who remember your name and your needs, beautiful building, central location, and comfortable rooms. Gewandhaus is not just the best hotel in Dresden, it is a reason to visit Dresden.

We had a wonderful stay at Gewandhaus Dresden over the holidays. The rooms are beautifully designed and very comfortable. We had a delicious dinner at the restaurant, but the service was the real highlight. The reception team was incredibly helpful, and the hotel manager organized a lovely Christmas Eve gathering for the guests. It was such a thoughtful gesture that made our stay memorable. Highly recommended!
