This trip was absolutely brilliant. We made our own way there in an Uber and as a result of doing this independently, the sanctuary got every penny of our entrance fee. We did the VIP experience and it was more than worth the extra. Our Guide Joseph, spoke excellent English and is clearly fervently passionate about his job and the care of the animals. The main aim of the sanctuary is to rehabilitate and release back into the wild wherever they can and when it’s not possible, they provide a fabulous home. The stories of the animals you see and the efforts to help them are truly heartwarming. I would not hesitate to recommend this centre to anyone who is interested in wildlife rehabilitation.
This is a must do experience for any lover of animals. I saw Andean condors and speckled bears. I fed llamas, alpacas, deer, and parrots. I even got to pet a toucan and tortoise. It was all amazing. Our guide was phenomenal. He told us about every animal, their histories, the goals of the sanctuary, and general histories of Cusco and the sanctuary. It was all very fascinating and the details elevated the experience.
We had such a brilliant visit to Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary and would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Cusco. Our driver, Mario, picked us up directly from our hotel in Cusco and was fantastic from the moment we set off. He was super informative throughout the drive, sharing loads of interesting information about Cusco, the Incas and the surrounding area. He even had a book about Cusco and the Incas in the car for us to browse through on the journey, which was a really nice touch and made the drive part of the experience itself. At the sanctuary, our guide Aurelio was fantastic. He took us around each of the animals, explaining their stories, how they came to be at the sanctuary and the work being done to care for them. You could really see his genuine care and passion for the animals, which made the tour feel much more personal. One of the highlights was getting the opportunity to feed some of the animals ourselves, which made the experience even more memorable and interactive. It was a really interesting, enjoyable and memorable visit, and a great way to learn more about Peru’s wildlife and the work being done to protect and rehabilitate the animals. A huge thank you to Mario and Aurelio for making the whole experience so enjoyable. Definitely worth a visit if you’re staying in Cusco! 🇵🇪🦙🦅
It is a great way to support the Santuary and the work they do. Our guide was very informative and we had the chance to feed several animals. Rainbow Macaw, Galapagos Turtles, Deer. The VIP tour includes pickup and return. The staff and volunteers are all friendly and helpful. Don’t miss feeding the Lamas and Alpacas it was a great experience.
Wonderful tour-highly recommend! We loved learning more about the animals and seeing the condors flying overhead.
This wildlife tour was absolutely amazing, Yeremy hd such good knowledge and showed throughout the entire tour that he and everyone else cares about these animals I would 100% go back and do this tour especially if you love animals and want to see how they care and rehabilitate injured animals 😊😊😊
This was amazing and a highlight of our Peru trip! Roger was so friendly and our pickup was easy, he also dropped us off right at our Airbnb instead of the central dropoff point. While we were on site, Elba gave us a wonderful tour with a lot of background about the various animals and how they ended up needing to come to the sanctuary. We got to be very close and feed many animals, and it was truly an unforgettable experience! Highly recommend if you are staying in Cusco. And recommend their VIP option with pickup as we were originally going to try to just Uber and were having difficulties getting a ride since it’s a bit far outside of the city. Definitely worth it.
Was a great experience to hear about the animals and why they were at the sanctuary. We felt it was a little rushed, and would have liked a little more time for photos, but we really enjoyed it.
The animal sanctuary does really wonderful rehabilitation work and the tour was handled wonderfully. The experience with arranging pick-up was a little bit confusing because I had to contact the sanctuary to figure out what time I would be attending and when the pickup would be. However, once I realized that I needed to set that up, Cochahuasi made it so easy and we were able to be picked up right at our hotel in Cusco. It was a great experience and a wonderful opportunity.
We loved this tour. Seeing up close, Andean Condors, Toco Toucan and Pumas - to name a few and being able to feed alpacas and turtles was great. Our guide, Yeremy was very good and it was also rewarding to know that by visiting, we supported the good work the Cochahuasi Sanctuary is doing.
The guide and staff were amazing and informative, with great English skills. The pickup made it super easy with no trouble. Cannot recommend it highly enough, especially how cheap the private VIP tour is. Really refreshing to see a sanctuary rather than a zoo.
Great tour of the sanctuary with a lot of feeding activities with the protected animals there. Excellent tour for families, especially those with young children. Highly recommended!
Enjoyed learning about the animals! Our guide was very knowledgeable about the animals on site and we had the opportunity to feed some of them.
We love seeing animals, and wanted to support the work the sanctuary does. Some amazing collections of animals we never see in Australia. Description says three hour experience but was 1 1/2 hr. Guide on site did good job but took us from exhibit to exhibit, then handed us to manager who finished last few exhibits as they push you out the door to section across from carpark where you get to feed an assortment of alpacas and lamas and visit a very small run down gift shop where you can buy items to help support the sanctuary. BUT inside the sanctuary is a small cafe with coffee refreshments etc and a larger gift shop with 3 x the selection of goods to buy. When we asked if we could go back to this area, there was phone calls and clear reluctance to allow us back in. Response we got us that these stores are retail stores and proceeds from there do not go to sanctuary. So they rent out space then do everything they can to keep you away from there so they can’t raise funds to pay the rent that does go to the sanctuary. Could not even spend last 30 min just walking back past the enclosures and birds that are sitting in common areas. It’s a circuit and they want you in and out.
Really easy to book with great communication. The sanctuary itself is wonderful, one of the best experiences we had in Peru.
We got to see a wide variety of animals up close. The sanctuary is doing great work rescuing animals from traffickers and poachers. We had a great experience.
A really special place! I’d recommend it to anyone traveling to Cusco, you get to see so many native animals up close and personal. We got to feed the parrots, tortoises, Andean deer, alpaca, and llamas! Loved also seeing pumas, spectacled bears, the flying of the condors, porcupines, and monkeys. Each animal had their own backstory as to why they needed rehabilitation, very touching. I do wish they gave a bit more time for photos but overall an amazing experience. You also have the opportunity to makes some stops with the driver along the way if you want- we stop for some street food and outside saqsaywaman. If you already plan to go there, would be the perfect built in drop off.
What a great place to see the work they are doing to help these creatures.
I had the best time doing the VIP tour with Manuel. He was so informative on all the residents and shared their interesting back stories. You can tell that all of the animals are so well taken care of and loved. My favourite part of the experience was feeding the alpacas and llamas. I had the privelege of naming one of their new baby alpacas- Caramelo! Overall an amazing experience and transportation was included with our ticket.
Your was informative and goes to a good cause! The pickup and drop off were smooth with the driver giving a great overview of the sanctuary.
I had a great time with the designated driver! He was lovely, and was a very safe and secure driver. The tour of the place where they rescue animals was very short and quite rushed. I wanted to know about all the work they do and how they introduce the animals back in the wild. But the tourguide thought I was more interested in feeding the animals. Anyway it's a great job they do, and they deserve all credit for doing it. Because the price is quite low, I still think it's worth it. the ride there was absolutely breathtaking beautiful.
Pretty good experience. My ride to the sanctuary was with Mario. Great guy. The sanctuary was nice, learned alot about their rehabilitation with animals. The animals looked well cared for and I was told which animals were fairly new, how long some animals take to recover, like Macaws and theor festhers growing back in, how long some of them have left before being released back to the wild. All in all, a fun experience
We had an amazing visit to the Sanctuary! Manuel was our tour guide - he was prompt upon pick up, spoke amazing English and was so informative about the Sanctuary and all the animals. They do amazing kind loving work with the animals and you can see how much they truly care and love the animals. This was one of top activities with our children in Cusco!!! Highly highly recommend!!!!
That this is a true animal sanctuary which is operated by many volunteers. They operate without any assistance from the Government and that they rely mostly on Tourism. It was a wonderful interaction with the wildlife, experience the condors flying, feeding the alpacas & Lamas….
That is a one of the most interesting tours I have been on, my guide, I have forgotten his name, dam it, he deserves all the recognition in the world, very knowledgeable, communication out of this world. He did a wonderful job guiding me around . Do yourself a favor and visit
Visiting the sanctuary was a very nice experience. It’s wonderful what they are doing to help the animals. Manuel picked us up and was very easy to talk to, and knowledgeable. We fed tortoises and llamas and were able to pet a toucan. We got up close to the condors and talked with the hilarious parrots. We even got to see the pumas face to face at their enclosure, and got a good look at a bear. Manuel explained the story of the different animals and why each was there and how they can be released back to the wild. This experience is worth a trip, only a couple hours total, to support the efforts and visit up close with animals.
Wonderful private tour of animal sanctuary. Have the ability to get up close and feed some of the animals. It is about a 30 min ride from central Cusco.
Absolutely loved our experience at the animal sanctuary. We did the VIP tour which was so worth the cost. Our guide was super nice and gave us a ton of information on Cusco and the Incas on the drive there. The tour of the sanctuary was super immersive and we learned a lot about what happened to the animals there and general information about each species in general. I saw many animals I had never seen before in a close up ethical environment. The animals are well taken care of and are there to be rehabilitated to go back to the wild.
Fantastic experience from start to finish. Great to see how they care for the animals.
Amazing experience!! Manuel was very informative from the moment he picked us up at our hotel. He explained everything there was to know about each animal we saw at the sanctuary and even shared their funny quirks. I love that all the animals they take in get released into the wild, as long as they are healthy enough to do so. Highly recommend this excursion!
We had an amazing time touring the sanctuary! Manuel was a guide and he was so engaging and full of interesting information both about the animals and sanctuary but also about Cusco and Peru in general. We were picked up and dropped off from our hotel in Cusco which went really smoothly. The sanctuary itself was incredible to see and hear about the amazing work being done! And to get to interact and feed some of the animals made it even more special. This is a great way to spend a few hours when you are in Cusco, highly recommend this tour!
Our family had a great experience with the animal sanctuary from pickup to drop off today. The kids loved it and they did a great job. It was about 40 minutes from our hotel downtime.
My family had a fun time here today. We did the VIP tour which included transportation to and from our hotel. Yeremi was a great guide. We fed turtles, macaws, alpacas, and llamas, and saw condors, speckled bears, monkeys, jaguars, and others. Including transportation to/from the sanctuary it was about 2.5 hours total.
It’s a sanctuary for animals who have been rescued from poachers etc. The sanctuary is run primarily by a family with a few volunteers in humble circumstances, they do their absolute best by the animals.
Highly recommend visiting this place! Our guide Yeremy picked us up from our hotel. He was great, showed us around and explained about the animals. We enjoyed our time here! Thank you!
We had a great experience going to this animal sanctuary. We were able to see all the animals and feed the tortoises, parrots, alpacas, and llamas 🦙. Our guide was Manuel and he was very knowledgeable and pleasant.
It may not have all the slickness of a modern sanctuary or zoo that you’re used to, but the care, conservation and breeding programs are evident
We had a great time. Communication via WhatsApp after booking, pick-up in the city center by our tour guide manuel, who is great at chitchat and factual informations about cusco and the animal sanctuary. Feeding some of the animals was an absolute highlight and you can really notice how every penny goes back into the sanctuary. Would recommend very much! :)
It was an amazing experience. Manuel was a great guide with lots of knowledge. We learned a lot about the animals and their needs and how they ended up in the sanctuary. Most of the animals are released back into the wild after they get better. The animals came to use because of the food and where never forced to come closer if they did not want to regardless. There was a whole parrot gang that acted though but was very gentle when taking the food. Highly recommend.
I loved the hands on experience! Very knowledge guild and made me feel very comfortable. No problem in me being a solo traveller
Amazing so much up close and personal with the animals. Feeding and petting the llamas and alpacas. We fed turtles. Got to see birds. Definitely I must do all of the proceeds benefit the animals as well. Great cause well worth it would do it again.
I cannot say enough good things about the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary. I highly recommend booking a private tour in advance. Manuel picked us up from our hotel and then gave us a private tour in English of the history of the sanctuary and the rescue stories of each of the animals. Each one was more harrowing than the last. The animals were all clearly well cared for and the Sanctuary has the express goal to rehabilitate the animals and then release them into the wild and track their progress. We were not rushed and then after the tour Manuel drove us back to our hotel. He was an incredible guide who clearly had a deep love and respect for the animals at the shelter. This was truly the highlight of my time in Cusco and I highly recommend it!
As an animal lover I couldn’t wait to visit the Coachuasi Animal Sanctuary. I was traveling solo and booked a private tour with hotel pickup and drop-off, which I highly recommend since the sanctuary is outside the city and not easy to reach by public transport. I visited at 9 am and it ended up being just me and two other people. It was such a peaceful and personal experience. The sanctuary is essentially a hospital for injured and trafficked wildlife and our guide did a wonderful job explaining how some of the animal arrived there. They all have names, personalities and stories. Although the sanctuary is on the smaller side, it was a perfect way to spend half a day. I got to feed turtles, parrots, llamas and alpacas and the highlight was seeing the spectacled bears and condors up close. We were even able to enter their enclosures and watch the condors in flight which was truly unforgettable. All the money spent on the tour goes directly toward supporting the sanctuary’s rescue and rehabilitation work, so visiting is a meaningful way to help them continue expanding and improving. There aren’t many places like this!
We were picked up at our hotel and dropped off there after the tour. The animal sanctuary was wonderful. We had a private tour and were able to feed most of the animals. We learned about all the animals and how they rehabilitated them and released them. The highlight was having a condor fly over our heads!
Must see if you care about animals. So powerful to hear their stories and how far each of them have come. Spending time with them is honestly the best thing I did in Peru and that which gave me the most positive energy. Will be back with my husband. I miss all of them already!
We took this VIP tour which inclued pick up and drop off from our hotel. Got to feed some rescued animals and birds. Watching the condors in flight was a truly amazing experience. We are also glad that the money goes to a good cause.
We really appreciated that to the VIP included transport from our hotel. It was easy and well communicated. Once we arrive, we were greeted by an English speaking guide that let us take our time to experience and learn about each animal rescue. We had an opportunity to feed them and Marvel around the sanctuary.
This is such a great experience. To see native animals of Peru up close and feed some of them was amazing. They are doing great and critical work If you are in the area it’s more than worth the short drive up to see the animals. If you have kids feeding the turtles, alpacas and parrots is a great memory.
The experience was GREAT! We fed the turtles, the alpacas, the llamas and the birds. The guide was friendly and was answering all of our questions. The work they are doing to help, rehabilitate and even release these animals is incredible. We strongly recommend.
