Our trip to Machu Picchu was fabulous. Three of us hiked the KM104 trail, while the other three took the train and bus. We also added a one day Sacred Valley tour. Our guide Miguel was really knowledgable and took good care of us. He went out of his way to help us when one person in our familiar struggled with the altitude. He also has good tips on where to eat in Aguas Calientes. I can highly recommend Action Trek Peru and especially Miguel

Itinerary
Day 1
1
We collect you from your Cusco hotel early in the morning and then transfer you in our van to the train station at Ollantaytambo. Our train journey lasts about an hour before making an unscheduled stop at KM 104, the trailhead of the Inca Trail and the start of our hike. Passing through the Inca Trail checkpoint we immediately see our first archaeological center, Chachabamba. These ruins were one of the last shelters used by the Inca pilgrims before they reached Machu Picchu. After some hours we arrive at Wiñay Wayna. Named after an orchid and meaning “Forever Young” in Quechua the site provides incredible views far across the Sacred Valley. Once the tour is complete we continue our hike for another 1-2 hours on a relatively flat section of trail. At around 4:00 pm we will reach the Sun Gate. Intipunku provides our first views of the magnificent Machu Picchu. Arriving in Aguas Calientes we will take you to check in at your hotel. Dinner will be in a local restaurants in town.
Day 2
2
Get an early breakfast at your hotel before we meet to take a an early bus along the winding road to Machu Picchu. As we climb gradually to the sacred city we should be lucky enough to see the magnificent sunrise over the Andes. All of our guides are experts and enthusiasts in the history and legends of Machu Picchu, and so the 2-hour tour of the site will really bring the city to life for you. Of course, there will be plenty of time to take photos, of the city….and of the wild Llamas roaming the terraces! If you have elected to climb Huayna Picchu mountain, you will begin the hike at 10 AM (Huayna Picchu is not included in the trek price). If you are not climbing the mountain you will have some time in Machu Picchu before you return to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival in AC we board the expedition train to Ollantaytambo or to Poroy. From Ollantaytambo or Poroy we will transfer you in our vehicle to your Cusco hotel.

Action Peru Tours ruined our Peru trip. We booked the 2D/1N Inca Trail in early February for late May. They messaged us and stated that the initial date we booked was not available, but confirmed they would be able to take us on May 29. We booked our entire Peru trip around this, having confirmed Inca Trail and Machu Picchu tickets, and now on May 27, less than 48 hours before the tour was supposed to start, they canceled our trip with absolutely no notification other than an email from Viator stating we were getting a refund. In fact, they did not answer any communications in the week prior to our trip. They will not answer the phone, and when we went to the address listed as their office in Cusco, there was no office there. Action Peru Tours is a scam and will ruin your Peru trip. It is impossible to get Inca Trail tickets on two days notice, and now it is unlikely we will even get to see Machu Picchu, even if we cancel the rest of our planned itinerary in order to stand in line for several days in Aguas Calientes in hopes of getting last minute tickets. This has been an absolutely horrible experience that has ruined the rest of our Peru trip and this company needs to be removed from the Viator platform.
Christian Piña was an amazing guide!! We were able to learn so much about Machu Picchu and see all of the best views (and take awesome pictures). 10/10 recommend adding on the huchapinchu (?) hike too.
This tour was absolutely amazing and we really enjoyed the experience. We had such an amazing guide, Christian, who walked us around and showed us all of the great sites and told us all about the history of the site. I really think that anybody who’s looking to go to Machu Picchu should book this tour. They are so coordinated and made the process so easy for us. I also love that every step along the way we had somebody guiding us so we could really just sit back and relax and just enjoy the trip. The hotel that was booked was also amazing and super comfortable. Would highly recommend to anybody!
Getting to Machu Picchu is very tedious and the company handles all of the logistics for you. We were able to purely enjoy the experience without worrying about the details of getting around. And our tour guide Christian showed us around Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes which made our time informative and relaxing.
Ali was an incredible guide the whole way through and made the entire journey so much more enjoyable. Not only was he incredibly knowledgeable, he also had a great sense of humor and was fun to hangout with! 10/10 highly recommend.
Once in a lifetime experience to celebrate my sister’s birthday. Our host, Ali, was fantastic. He’s very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Would highly recommend him for any tour.
This was amazing. Christian Peña was everything you want in a tour guide. He visited us the night before to help us prepare, picked us up, showed us all the best sights, had no end to interesting stories, and dropped us back off and the end. His English was great, he was polite, knowledge, and interesting. The hike was difficult for my current fitness level (~6 hours), but it was beautiful. After the initial ascent, it was much easier. And, it made that first view of Machu Picchu from the sun gate so much more worth it. Christian was patient with me, realizing when we needed breaks, and pointing out lots of interesting things on the trail. Macchu Pichu was everything I hoped it would be, and I was surprised and delighted with the beauty of the mountains. It was nice to have a few hours the first afternoon and a morning, so I thought the trip length was perfect. Highly recommend.
What an incredible experience! Christian Pena really took the time to answer all questions, share his love and knowledge for hiking and Machu Picchu, and was incredibly organized--keeping track of schedules, tickets, hotel stay and an exceptional dining experience!
So memorable! Christian Peña was amazing. Zero hassle and had a fully loaded experience.
We had a really great experience with Action Peru Treks! The booking process was simple. They were responsive to my emails. Our guide, Christian, was great! He came to our hotel the night before and answered all of our questions and his English was so easy to understand. He was always prompt and also respectful. He shared many interesting details about Machu Picchu with us and knows a lot about the history. This trek was worth the money! You should totally go with this company!!
Christian was such a great guide! He made the hike and the tour itself absolutely amazing! Thanks so much!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Unforgettable Experience - Christian is the Best! Our hike to Machu Picchu was easily the highlight of our trip, and we owe so much of that to our incredible guide, Christian. From start to finish, he was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the history of the trail. What really set this experience apart was how Christian handled the logistics. He took care of every single detail, allowing us to just focus on the hike and soak in the scenery without any stress. The absolute peak of the trip was reaching the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). Stepping through and seeing that iconic first view of Machu Picchu spread out below us was a spiritual experience I’ll never forget. If you are planning this trek, do yourself a favor and ask for Christian—he truly goes above and beyond to make the journey special!
We enjoyed an outstanding 2D/1N trip to Machu Pichu. The whole team at Action Peru Tracks is really amazing, especially Christian Rodrigo Flores, our guide, and Roxner in the back office. The communication worked without problems and from start to finish we felt totally taken care of. Christian is super organized and made the whole experience very easy. He answered all our questions and impressed us with his extended knowledge on the Incas. He is extremely attentive and went above and beyond. We couldn’t have asked for a better trip.
We had a wonderful trip with our guide Ali. He was very knowledgeable and organised everything very well. We had a unique experience to visit this legendary place
This experience was well worth the price we payed for it. One of the best guides I’ve ever had and I learned a lot about Inca Culture.
The short Inca trail trip with camping was an amazing experience and I would highlight recommend to anyone! Our guide Nilton was extremely knowledgeable and was very passionate about Incan and Peruvian culture! The food prepared was also top notch!
We had an incredible experience with Action Peru Treks on our 2-day, 1-night short Inca trail trek to Machu Picchu. Everything was well-organized and ran smoothly from start to finish. A special shoutout to our guide, Hipo — he was kind, knowledgeable, and professional throughout the entire journey. His passion for the history and culture of the region truly enhanced our experience and made it even more memorable. Highly recommend Action Peru Treks — and if you get Hipo as your guide, you’re in for a fantastic trip!
We had an amazing trip to Machu Picchu with our family of five, including three young adults. Our guide, Christian Peña, was absolutely outstanding. He was incredibly organized, had a calm and positive demeanor, and communicated clearly throughout the journey. His deep knowledge of the trail and the history of Machu Picchu made the experience both smooth and enriching. Christian did a fantastic job assessing our group’s fitness level and thoughtfully tailored the pace and approach of the hike to suit everyone. His ability to read the group and adjust as needed made a huge difference in how enjoyable and memorable the trek was. There are many companies and guides to choose from, but the key to a great experience is the personality and quality of your guide. If you want a truly top-notch experience, we highly recommend asking for Christian Peña.
Incredible, amazing, well worth the hike!!!! Our tour guide always Ali, he was knowledgeable on the Incan culture! The hike up to sunbathe was challenging (even for us David hikers from Oregon, US) but he made sure to give us plenty of times for rest. He was prompt at all pick up times and made sure we felt know and elk informed on all the information regarding history! There’s so much more to the 2D/1n like, I would do it again in a heartbeat - “Tupananchiskama”
Our tour guide on this trip was Ali! He was very friendly, professional and informative with so much information. Felt very lucky to have him as our Tour Guide. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience!! Tupananchiskama!
This was a challenging trek but the payoff at the end makes it well worth it! The first view of Mach Picchu through the Sun Gate gives you such a feeling of accomplishment. Our experience was heightened by our fabulous guide Lino. He was so encouraging and so informative. As my son said, I think we had the best guide on the mountain! Thank you for an unforgettable experience!
I completed the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (2D/1N) and found it to be a great experience. The route offered a good balance of physical challenge, scenic views, and historical significance. Along the way, we encountered beautiful landscapes and archaeological sites such as Wiñay Wayna. Our guide provided helpful context and shared background on the Inca culture and the natural surroundings. Arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate added a memorable dimension to the journey. Visiting the main site the following morning felt even more meaningful after approaching it on foot. The organization of the trip, including meals and logistics, was smooth and well-managed. I’d suggest this route for travelers seeking a more engaging approach to visiting Machu Picchu.
(M 33 : F 36 | Montreal) Our time on the short Inca Trail and Machu Picchu, with Action Treks Peru was all around pretty great and we were not disappointed. Our guide, Nilton, took great care to be engaging and educational as well as providing space for independent experiences. Nilton has the knowledge of an experienced guide and was happy present alternative perspectives and entertain all kinds of questions regarding the cultural history of the area. Truly a great guy, caring individual and went above and beyond to ensure we got the most out of the experience. There were some logistical hiccups but everything was taken care of quickly and had no major impact on our experience. Everyone we interacted with at Action Treks Peru was incredibly kind and helpful.
We had a wonderful experience with Wily Jones on the short Inca Trail and Sacred Valley tour. He was so knowledgeable and helped us get to places during times that less people were there which made the experiences even better! Wily loves his job, land and people which is demonstrated by the way he interacts with everyone. Roxner also did a wonderful job coordinating everything and answering all of my questions. I have no regrets using this company to help with my bucket list trip!
Hippo was an amazing guide on our 2 day trip. He was so knowledgable and accommodating to our groups needs. The switchbacks going up the mountain were very challenging and Hippo ensured we all made it in the time needed. He also has so much information about the native culture, Machu Picchu and floral/vegetation. Thank you for a fantastic adventure!.
Hipo was a great guide- so knowledgeable about everything! Would def recommend this trip with him to do with friends or family.
The tour was very well organised start to end. We traveled from India and the company was very helpful in providing all the necessary support on time. Roxner was very helpful in communicating throughout the planning process. Christian is an amazing guide and knows everything about the flora , fauna and history of the region. The group was a small one, perfect for the hike. The quality of food provided and the hotel was very good. I would recommend Action Peru for all your adventures in Peru!
Really smoothly organised, great communication to in, flexible arrangements, nice accommodation, awesome food, small group size, lovely guide with good knowledge and good humour
Had such a good time on the Trek. Our guide was very knowledgeable. Managed to experience rain, sun, clear blue skies and the clouds! A real once in a lifetime experience and the smaller group made the experience much more intimate. All of the logistics were sorted out and the food was excellent too.
Best tour ever, limited people, christian really provides great information on culture, history as well as biodiversity Had the best time ever
We did a combined tour of the Sacred Valley and Short Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu. Our guide Christian Pena was super knowledgeable and showed us many aspects of Andean culture and history. We highly recommend this tour and this tour guide, as well as Action Peru. They were able to accommodate last minute changes for us to do the Inca trail even though it was closed by the government a few days before our trip. Also the lunch provided was really good and kept us going for the duration of the tours!
We had an amazing time with Christian. He was an excellent guide. Pushing us when tired and allowing rest when needed. I had a cold on the trail and wasn't feeling 100% and it was still one of the best hiking experiences of my life. Christian has a wealth of knowledge rivaling many naturalists and anthropologists with advanced degrees. We learned a lot; we accomplished a lot; and we had an amazing experience. I 100% recommend this company and Christian as a guide.
Edgar Mora was an amazing tour guide with patience to answer and explain any questions we all had. He navigated us through every situation easily and comfortably and is an amazing person with incredible knowledge
A trip of a lifetime. Edgar Mora was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. He allowed us to take breaks when needed and pushed us to complete the hike. After a long day of travel, we spent hours at Macchupicu. He took his time walking us around, teaching us about the structures and history and was our personal photographer at the same time. I couldn’t recommend this company and Edgar enough!
Edgard did a wonderful job with both days!! He was very informative, helpful, and the best guide I’ve ever had! Did a wonderful job taking group pictures, couple pictures, and letting us know when to take a picture
We had originally booked the 2day/1night short Inca trail, unfortunately the Inca trail was closed so we hiked an alternative route offered, Huchuy Qosqo. Our tour guide Lino, met us at our hostel the night before to debrief us on the two day excursion and answered all of our questions so we felt prepared :) Lino was helpful, knowledgeable and had great English! Our hotel and dinner provided was superb, definitely above our expectations. The tour was organized, prompt and we didn’t have to worry about a thing. Roxner was also great at communicating via email pre-hike. I would highly recommend doing this tour for Machu Picchu, as the preparation for buses/trains/tickets and circuit options can all be very overwhelming (especially for someone who does not speak Spanish). Thanks for everything Lino, cheers! Maggie & Lydia
We went on the 2 day, 1 night trek to Huchuy Qosqo/Machu Picchu. In February the Inca Trail is closed but this trail is great and very private. Day 1 it rained but the trek was fun and beautiful. We walked to 13,200 ft so make sure you are altitude prepared. The scenery is beautiful and the Inca settlement is amazing. Our guide Christian was knowledgeable, helpful, a lot of fun and spoke perfect English. A train ride to Aquas Caliente where we had dinner at an upscale restaurant, shopping at the market and then to our very nice hotel with comfortable beds finished day 1. Day 2 started with a hotel breakfast and a morning bus ride to Machu Picchu. It is breath taking. Christian led us through the maze of walkways, stopping to explain the Inca culture, history, agriculture and construction. The Inca were amazing. Christian was a fantastic guide with a wealth of knowledge and Roxner was very great to easily communicate the pre-trek questions and coordination. We highly recommend Action Peru Treks.
We had such a great time and experience. The trail was challenging but our guides were patient and helpful. They made the experience possible and way more enjoyable. Christian, our guide is highly recommended! I really felt like he made an effort to get to know us and have fun. We laughed together and learned about each other. He was checking on us to make sure we were okay and he was knowledgeable about everything we asked. He gave us recommendations of things to see in Lima as well. I would love to go with him again because he was really THAT good.
This was the perfect tour if you're not a big hiker or have a short amount of time to explore Machu Picchu. Our guide Fischer was incredible and let us go at our own pace (the altitude is no joke, even though we had been acclimatising for 5 days prior). He was very knowledgeable and friendly. I found the packed lunch to be very good - a lot more than I would usually eat in one sitting - which meant we had plenty of snacks for the next day as well. It was still one of the harder hikes I've done as a novice, but it was absolutely worth it for the views and Machu Picchu at the end. We took as many breaks as needed, which just meant we spent more time looking at the incredible scenery. The hotel and dinner spot in Aguas Calientes were also nicer than what I've experienced on other multi day tours.
We booked our trek in April. It was the private 2D&1N short inca trail. From the outset, Roxner of APT was fantastic with excellent communication throughout. We had a pre-brief the evening before trek with our guide Lino, who deserves a special mention. During the entire trek and the 2nd day visit to MP, he was extremely attentive towards us and showed a real passion for the subject of inkan history. In our trek was all transfers (bus and train), hotel and evening meal in AC during the night, entrance to MP on day 2 ( you get to descend into MP on day 1 around 2pm and revisit MP on day 2). Definitely not for the faint hearted but so worth the trek when you crest at the sungate, it makes all the climbing worthwhile. I can highly recommend APT - you will not be disappointed! These guys help you make memories.
I recently completed the Short Inca Trail (2D/1N) with my partner whilst visiting Peru. We pre booked our experience with Action Trek Peru prior to visiting, and that decision was one we will never regret. Action Trek Peru were really helpful at clearly communicating the requirements for the trip and organising all necessary elements including hotel transfer, bus travel, rail travel and national park entry tickets. This also meant we avoided many hours of queuing to arrange this when arriving! Our tour guide, Nilton, was absolutely fantastic during our two day trip. On Day 1, Nilton picked us up from our hotel and guided us from Cusco all the way through to arriving by rail at KM104 to begin our hike. Over the 12km hike, Nilton was thoroughly engaging, motivating and funny. His style of providing excellent information on the places we visiting coupled with his excellent and humourous conversation made the whole hike a pleasure (even if at times the elevation gain and stair, after stair, after stair were a challenge!). Reaching the Sun Gate genuinely felt a real success! In the evening Nilton came out for dinner with us where we shared a lovely meal and spoke more about our amazing day, and the history of Machu Pichhu and Aguas Calientes. On Day 2, Nilton gave us a fantastic and information in depth tour of the site itself, the scenery, information and sheer scale of the site is something to behold. Whilst visiting it alone would be something to remember, with a tour guide from Action Trek Peru (especially Nilton!) your experience is so much more, we will never forget some of the stories shared and memories made. Thank you Action Trek Peru and Nilton for such a fantastic experience, we will never forget it and could not recommend visiting Peru and Machu Picchu enough!
What an experience! Everything was seamless when booking our trip, Action Trek Peru organise everything for you and look after you well. Pick up was easy and on time, very easy to send bags to hotel, everything included that you need. The hike was difficult at times but so rewarding and the scenery stunning, a special shout out to our guide Nilton who shared details about each Incan site we came across, different plants we saw along the way and many interesting facts about the Quechua culture. He was friendly, encouraging and funny and made the trip very enjoyable. Reaching the Sun Gate was so rewarding and such a special way to see your first view of Machu Picchu before the guided tour on day 2. Again Nilton was very knowledgeable and delivered the tour in an interesting way that did not feel manufactured. Do not hesitate to book this experience! :) Thank you Nilton and Action Treks Peru.
We had an exceptional experience! The team was incredibly flexible and helpful with all the arrangements, from managing our luggage to organizing everything with the hotel and restaurants, which made the entire trip stress-free. Our guide, Lino, truly made the difference. His vibrant personality and deep knowledge brought the journey to life, with tailored explanations that added a personal touch throughout. The trail itself was breathtaking, and when we finally arrived at Machu Picchu, Lino skillfully avoided the crowds, creating a peaceful and unique experience. It’s rare to feel so relaxed in such a busy location, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu is magnificent. Like nothing I've ever seen before. The trail on day one was challenging but so beautiful and our guide Hipo really made the whole experience for us. He was so enthusiastic, supportive and knowledgeable. He had great humor and it was just really enjoyable to spend the 2 days with him. If I was coming back to Cusco/Machu Picchu i'd definitely request to go with him again. He also helped to make the trip very smooth with no waiting in lines and he was very punctual. The trek itself was fantastic. It totally exceeded my expectations and I was really glad to have Hipo with us to learn all about the nature, scenery and inkan history. The lunch provided on day 1 was also exceptional, for a packed lunch I was very impressed, it was the best brownie I've ever had! This experience was definitely something I will always remember and would fully recommend someone coming to Peru to do. As an avid traveller and reviewer, I believe feedback is a gift so I'm also sharing the reasons I am giving this experience 4 stars and not 5, with the hope it will be taken on board by the tour provider to make this specific tour even better. The 2 main reasons this was not a 5 star experience were the following: 1. Accommodation The staff at the B&B were so friendly and helpful, however the quality of the accomodation was really bad. Our room had windows on the first floor that didn't lock, the walls were paper thin so we could hear everything from outside including loud techno music and dogs barking at 3am. This meant that we had a terrible sleep. Considering day 1 starts at 4am and day 2 at 5:30am, having a restful place to stay is so important. Additionally the bathroom facilities were really old and smelled like sewage. For a tour that cost over €1000 for 2 of us, the accomodation was really below expectations. We checked online and it was about €40 for the night in the B&B we stayed in, and you could tell. I strongly recommend investing in a higher quality accomodation for future guests. 2. Day 2 of the tour, bad organisation The morning of the second day was fantastic. Hipo collected us and took us to Machu Picchu for a tour and we were one of the first groups in which was amazing. However we were back in Aguas Calientes for about 9:30am and the tour was over, but we had to wait until 15:50 for our train back to Cusco. That's over 6 hours in a town with not much to do and no access to a hotel or facilities. This felt like a serious waste of time and was really disappointing. I feel we should have been travelling back to Cusco within 2 hours of the tour ending. The final thing that really bothered me was after the wait, we boarded the train back to Cusco to realize we weren't seated together. As a couple, travelling together and booking the tour together, I expect that our seats on the scenic train ride of over 1 hour are beside each other. This felt like really really bad organisation from the tour provider and to be honest after spending that amount of money and waiting that long for the train, just isn't good enough. Overall day 1 was 10/10, we couldn't thank our guide Hipo enough, as apart from the magnificent scenery, he was the highlight for us.
This was a truly magical trip - full of wonders in sights and sounds and tastes -an experience to be relived over and over in our memories. What made it extraordinary was our Action Peru Trek guide- Christian Pena He treated us like family and our one-on-one time With him over the 2 days was full of interesting conversations and unique insights into this place. He was genuine, respectful and passionate about his job and the Inca traditions and history We were truly mesmerized by the beauty of our surroundings and the importance of being part of a trek to such a historic and archeologically significant site. Christian was supportive and encouraging when we felt we could not take another step……and he never said there were millions of more steps….he kept us focused on the now and what beauty was to come which gave us hope that we could finish🥳. Thank you for a truly magnificent trek - absolutely the best 2 days ever!!!!
Awesome experience, enhanced by our guide, Ronnie. He was very knowledgeable and his very good english made our 2 days trip very enjoyable.
We did the 2 day/1 night hike to Macchu Picchu starting at km 104 with Lino as our guide. Lino was fantastic and made sure we had the best experience with his easy going attitude, knowledge of the area, and history of the Incas. The hotel arranged for us in Aguas Calientes was very comfortable and the packed lunch for the hike was delicious. On our second day, we added on the hike to the top of Huayna Picchu. The view was worth the grueling rock stair hike up. All around well worth it. Thank you Lino and Action Peru Trek. We highly recommend them!
Our 2-day Inca trip to Machu Picchu was absolutely fantastic! The journey started with the train ride from Ollantaytambo followed by a manageable hike to Machu Picchu. Our guide, Edgar, was excellent, sharing fascinating insights about the Incan culture, history and landscape. Day two was all about Machu Picchu, and although we didn’t had luck with the weather that day, Edgar made the experience even more special with detailed stories. The entire trip was well-organized, with very good logistics, great pacing, and a knowledgeable guide. A perfect blend of adventure and history — highly recommend!
We had a great time with Nilton. He judged our walking pace well & when we needed rests. It was great to be shown around Machu Pichu in a relaxed way ( unlike other guides that hurry), and also be shown around by someone who was interested in how the Incas lived & in what they might have believed.
