We had a wonderful experience and our guide was exceptional. Royer was super knowledgeable and very helpful and thoughtful through out the day and took care of our specific requirements on the trek.

Itinerary
Your adventure begins with pickup from your hotel in Cusco at approximately 4:30 a.m. Travel toward the southern highlands, passing traditional villages, farmland, valleys, and beautiful mountain scenery along the way.
After approximately two hours, stop at a local restaurant for a warm breakfast. Enjoy coffee or coca tea, use the restrooms, and prepare for the hike ahead. Then continue to the trailhead near Rainbow Mountain. Before beginning the hike, your guide will explain the route, review the main safety recommendations, and share helpful advice for walking at high altitude.
The hike to Vinicunca usually takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on your pace, the weather, and how your body responds to the altitude. The trail begins with a gradual climb before becoming steeper near the top. Your guide will set a comfortable pace and stop whenever needed. Along the way, walk through wide Andean landscapes with views of the Ausangate region. You may also see local herders, llamas, and alpacas. Your guide will share stories about the area, its communities, and its natural features. At the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, take time to rest, capture memorable photos, and admire the colorful slopes of Vinicunca. Your guide will explain how different minerals in the soil and rock created the mountain’s remarkable colors.
From Rainbow Mountain, continue toward Red Valley, a spectacular landscape of deep red hills and wide-open views. This area is usually quieter than the main viewpoint, allowing you to enjoy the scenery in a more peaceful setting. After exploring Red Valley, follow the trail back to the starting point while enjoying the surrounding mountains and high-Andean landscapes.
After the hike, drive back to the local restaurant for lunch. Take time to relax and enjoy a freshly prepared meal made with local Peruvian ingredients.
After lunch, begin the return journey to Cusco, arriving at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Royer is our guide and is knowledgeable. He explained everything well, took lot of pictures for us.
Advertised a Mercedes Sprinter; we were picked up in a different van with no working AC. After the hike they left us at the restaurant for over 40 minutes to deal with the van. The driver said it was fine. On the highway it nearly broke down several times. We had to switch vans mid-trip. On the replacement van they turned the AC off after we asked for it, and the back was extremely hot until we asked again. Unsafe and unpleasant. Would not book again.
The hike up Rainbow Mountain was absolutely challenging, but our guide, David, made it feel like a breeze. I actually sprained my ankle right before the trip and was worried I wouldn't make it. David never once stopped motivating me on the trail. Without his incredible support and encouragement, I would have completely missed out on one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
We did this after tiring day and we had to wake up early to drive up to the starting point. We had morning breakfast prepare by the crew and it was great! We then reached the hiking point and was considering taking the horse up. But we didnt, which in hindsight is a regret. We were tired and thought we could pull this off. Nevertheless, David's energy and enthusiasm was 10/10 he kept us in the correct mood and constantly smiling with encouragement. without his positive energy the trip would have turned sour.
After a very early pickup we had a great drive to the Rainbow Mountain. Breakfast was served quickly and very hot in the cool morning. The company of the guide, the cooks and the driver was great. Our driver was excellent at finding the quickest ways to get around traffic. Once we got to the mountain Alejandro really took care of us. Giving us some Eucalyptis oil to help our breathing. We took it very slow, about mid way seeing that one of us was strugling he took many of the things we had in our day packs to lighten our load. He then was able to negotiate a motorcycle ride for one of us to get all the way up. Alejandro is a great photographer and knows which shots to take. He helped us get all the iconic ones from the mountain. Lunch was served very hot again. It was all but ready when we got there. We were set up in a tent to protect us from the wind and sun. The cooks and driver were very quick at getting things ready and cleaned up after lunch. Lunch was a veritable feast. 5 courses with soup, avocado, cevice and a whole lot more. Doing this tour with TrexExperience was a great experience.
Overall this was an excellent trip. The driver was calm and safe which is always a great start. Freddie the chef treated us with a fabulous breakfast and lunch just before rainbow mountain. The table was set like a fancy restaurant even had a vase with real red roses ! Alejandro was our guide, a really kind and decent young man. He has excellent knowledge of the the rainbow mountain and red valley area. The trail is around 5000m altitude and can take a bit of effort, Alejandro keeps the mood light and relaxed. Our group had a mixture of some fast walkers and some slower ones. He allowed the faster ones to do extra side trips so they didn't feel restricted. There was no time pressure or rush for the tour to meet a schedule, we were allowed as much time as we all wanted to experience the region. Alejandro coordinated and managed this very professionally. Like so many TreXperience guides he will tell you where to take the best photo; often suggesting a pose and he will even jump into the shot if you want. His English is also excellent. No hesitation recommending this trip and especially Alejandro.
Alejandro was grrat, great experience!
Great experience. The sightseeing is astonishing. The guide care about each people and allowing us to take the needed time to hike and take pictures. I definitely recommend this day trip.
We had an incredible experience with Romario - he was engaging, knowledgeable and patient throughout the entire day. Absolutely incredible views, I would thoroughly recommend!
Great trip to rainbow mountain and sacred valley
We went with Romario, he was an excellent guide, very patient and the experience was awesome! We took our time, we walked slowly and we never rushed which is exactly what we wanted. Also the ride on the bus was smooth and quick, Julio is such an excellent driver. Finally, the meals cooked by Ismael were delicious and tasty. Such a great and fulfilling experience!
The weather was perfect for our tour. Pickup was quite early to account for Cusco traffic, but our guide Romario made it worthwhile — he was patient with our many breaks and looked after us with genuine compassion throughout.
David is simply the best guide! No other words needed. Highly recommend.
After our Inca Trail Trek was cancelled because of closure of trail because of weather, we booked a few other shorter excursions with Trexperience including this one day Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley Tour. We did the option with picnic breakfast and lunch. Our guide Romario was incredible -- the best Trexperience guide of the three we had during our different excursions! He was friendly, patient, spoke excellent English and had a real knack for sharing interesting tidbits of culture and knowledge along the way. Having him as our guide really enhanced our whole experience! It was an early morning pick-up with a 2.5 hour drive to our picnic site up in the mountains, We had a delicious breakfast before continuing to the trail-head. The hike itself, challenging because of the altitude, was incredible with amazing views both along the way, but especially at the top. There were many people at the summit of Vinicunca (Rainbow Mtn.) and you have to wait in a bit of a line to get your turn at a photo with no other people in it. Then we continued a bit further to the Red Valley which honestly was even more beautiful (particularly because it was much less crowded)! The vistas were stunning! And plenty of wild alpaca along the way too! Finally, we hiked back and then had another delicious meal waiting for us before the drive back to Cusco. I would whole-heartedly recommend this experience! Do yourself a favor and request Romario -- he was the best!
We got a really nice day with our guide Flavio. The experience was intense with our family and little kids, but Flavio explained everything and guide us to do this trek and appreciate the beautiful mountain. Our family really recommends with this guide Flavio a must to have a memorable moment.
What an amazing experience to have while visiting the Cusco region. My guide, Romario was excellent. He was very friendly, easy to talk to and knowledgeable of the region. We took the hike at a nice pace, took water breaks when needed. He reached out the before to let me know pick up time and to pack. The breakfast and lunch preps was awesome, very good! I enjoyed getting to Romario and our chat on the hike. He convinced me that I need to come back and take part in the four day Inca trial hike. One we got to the mountain, he gave us time to explore the area and took photos for me as well to document the amazing experience. I highly recommended Romario if you have the opportunity to request him. Maybe I wlll luck out and he will be my guide for the Inca trail!! Words can’t describe the experience. Thank you, Romario!!
Fantastic experience. Our guides were fantastic and took care of us every step of the way. Breakfast and lunch was also great. Five Star Experience!
Our guide Romario was great!! We had a great day with him. He was able to adapt to each of the family members. The rest of the staff was also great, we ate very well. We highly recommend Romario!
TreXperience are such an amazing, well managed and forward thinking company. Add to that the incredible, personable, engaging and very knowledgeable guide - David. Such a down to earth and committed individual that not only embraces the Inka ways and the history, but also makes you feel part of the path that these strong, resilient, caring and intelligent people carved out. I highly recommend using TreXperience and reaching out to David. And also a shout out to the Driver - she was a gem!
This tour was so fabulous! With fresh Peruvian dishes and great conversation along the trek! Beautiful views!! Davico was a great tour guide!
Abelardo was a fantastic host and guide. The mountains and glaciers were stunning and Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley so unique. Aberlado’s photography skills were first class capturing so many wonderful memories for us. We liked the ceremony with the coca leaves and all feel touched and blessed that a part of us remains in the mountains here in Peru. The lunch was superb with the standard and choice first class. Please pass on our thanks to your team for looking after us so impeccably.
We had such a good time doing this!! Sebastian is the best! He’s so knowledgeable, kind, and very experienced. The food made by Papacudo and Freddy was amazing!! They gave us so much food and all of it was SO good! This whole team is the best
What an out of this world experience! Started at 4.30am from Cusco. Our guide Elias made it great fun and very informative. Stopped for breakfast and our chefs Esteban y Jheymi outdid themselves with a hot cooked breakfast in the wilderness. The hike up over 5000 m above sea level was challenging but I got a ride on a pony, Poderosa, for some of the trek. I was blown away by the view of the colourful mountain Vinicunca from the top, with snow capped Ausangate behind us….but my favourite was the Red Valley. Just wow❤️ On the trip home we had a delicious hot lunch again cooked by our superchefs, before the drive back to Cusco. If you are going to do this trip, you can only go with TreXperience 😍😍
My wife and I spent a marvelous day with our guide Royer. The scenery was fantastic, of course, but Royer’s company was equally fantastic. He is knowledgeable, friendly and a great conversationalist. Our breakfast and lunch prepared by Leandro were excellent. The food was fresh, cooked just right and it added a great deal to the day being able to enjoy Peruvian cuisine. It was an excellent day in all respects.
David with TreXperience was an exceptional guide for what turned out to be one of the most memorable days of our entire trip. He took us beyond just Rainbow Mountain itself — including Red Valley and an additional peak with an alternate descent route that offered some of the most breathtaking views I’ve ever seen. What made David truly stand out was how attentive he was to our wellbeing throughout. At nearly 17,000 feet, altitude is no joke, and he checked in consistently to make sure we felt good and let us set our own pace without any pressure. He also came prepared with coca leaves, a traditional and remarkably effective remedy for the altitude effects that can otherwise derail the experience. David strikes the perfect balance between pushing you toward something extraordinary and making sure you actually enjoy the journey getting there. An absolute gem of a guide — don’t do Rainbow Mountain without him.
Our Trexperience Team was outstanding! Each one of them did their part professionally and with immense detail and skill. Brauli the chef , with his sous chef Estevan made us the most amazing Peruvian feast for breakfast and lunch. The entire team worked together to create what was truly an outstanding experience. The table setting and placement in the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains. The food was as offered at any four star restaurant. It was delicious and displayed beautifully. Amilcar the driver was efficient and excellent on those very narrow roads. In addition he offered us assistance without us having to ask. Charged our phones, gave us toilet paper when we stopped at restrooms in the event that they wouldn’t have any.. just a very accommodating individual. The icing on our experience along with all the aforementioned was our Guide David, he was professional, knowledgeable, kind and compassionate. He carried our water , our snacks. He would remind us to breathe, drink water and rest. He was so enthusiastic and happy to be with us. He motivated us to really take in the experience. We are forever grateful to each of these individuals. I would recommend this experience wholeheartedly.
This trip is better than you can imagine! We had the most amazing tour guide, David who was ready with everything! We loved our driver, Ameliga and our two chefs, Baurilo and Esteban! These two chefs prepared two amazing meals (breakfast and lunch) right there on the side of the mountain! David helped me deal with a few breathing issues, carried my water bottle and snacks so that I could concentrate on my hike.... and he has a knack for taking photos! What a group of an amazing guys!
Great experience! Royer and the TreXperiance went above and beyond.
We spent 5 days in Cusco and did the Machu Picchu hike and rainbow mountain hike along with other expeditions. The guides were great and provided a great experience. My only qualm was that the food could have been better at the restaurants that were picked for us.
What an amazing way to experience the rainbow mountains. We were well taken care of by our cooks Ismael and Eferson, driver Efrain and tour guide Sebastian. The food was great, the drive was smooth, and the hike was amazing. Sebastian was great for insights into the surrounding mountains and local culture. Tupananchiskama
We joined TreXperience because it branded as boutique group trips. And happily it’s only the two of us and can almost called it a private tour! The tour we joined - humantay lake and rainbow mountain. The guide, Roger, was very professional and caring all the way, with arrangements and hiking process. What’s more, he has amazing photo-taking skills which is a plus! On the last day, they arranged outdoor picnic which is a life-time experience. We arrived a rural site before hiking up to Rainbow Mountain, and trekking chefs starts cooking there. The guide, drivers, chefs are all happily devoted setting up for us, all we have to do is just sit, eat and enjoy the mountain view. Special applause to the team- this is a once in a lifetime experience because of you, thanks! Guide: Roger (totally professional and great photographer!) Driver : Luis ( great driving skills and clean vehicle) Cheff : Balvino and Braulio (The food is of course delicious. )
The tour was well coordinated by our tour guide, Sebatian, the day before the tour. As scheduled, my wife and I were picked up from our hotel at 4.15am and were driven 3 hrs to the Rainbow Mountain. Prior to arriving at the trailhead, we stopped at our picnic spot, which was immediately after the checkpoint, to have our specially prepared breakfast. After our 4-hr hike, we returned to the same spot to have our freshly cooked lunch. After lunch, we returned to Cusco and reached our hotel around 5.00pm. Our two accompanying chefs, Daniel and Elizabeth, were praiseworthy! They were quick to cook our delicious breakfast upon our arrival. Later they cooked us a wonderful and delicious buffet lunch. They’re definitely very experienced and good chefs. Sebatian, our guide, was very fit and experienced man and guided us well. He was very patient to wait for us as we couldn’t hike fast due to the high altitude and cold condition. I would say the whole team, Sebatian, the two chefs and the driver, coordinated and worked so well together to set up the picnic spot from scratch with tents, including our private toilet and to demob them quickly after lunch. Overall, we had a truly wonderful and memorable outing to the Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley, thanks to Sebatian, Daniel, Elizabeth and the driver (sorry, can’t remember his name). A highly recommended tour.
Katia was a great host on our rainbow mountain and red valley trip. Overall, the trip felt intimate, local, informative and completely magical. The hike was challenging due to the altitude, but Katia was always attentive and reassuring- leading us through breathing exercises before the hike, and paying special attention to group members who were struggling. I particularly liked the offering ceremony (stupors for Apus) we did towards the end of the hike, as well as the traditional and cultural knowledge Katia weaved into the tour.
Christina and I had an incredible day with Katie and the team. The on-time pick up/ drop off, excellent driving, delicious and beautifully presented breakfast and lunch and lovely setting created just for us all made this day special. What made the day extraordinary was the breathtaking beauty, combined with the guidance, expertise, and incredible knowledge Katie shared with us about high altitude hiking, the sacred place we were in and Incan culture. We will take these lessons with us. She is much more than a tour guide and we have such a good feeling about TreXperience as we prepare to join them on the Inca Trail in a few days.
We had a lovely experience trekking to Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley. An early morning start and bus ride brought us through beautiful countryside. We had a delicious outdoor breakfast with a view of glaciers and alpacas. Our guide Kate, shared her cultural expertise and even led us through some preparatory breathing exercises. The trek was challenging due to the altitude but we kept a nice pace. The early morning start proved wise as the view points became very crowded as we were preparing to leave. We continued on to the Red Valley trail and view point and then back to the bus. A delicious lunch was waiting for us, this time in a large tent. Overall, a great day!
Elias and his incredible team took us on the best adventure to Rainbow Mountain! We all had the most AMAZING day! Great food, epic views with a super fun hike! A very memorable day was had by all. I highly recommend this company! From start to finish they take care of everything! Thank you for your attention to detail & service!
Excellent tour with Wilbert, he was a great and attentive tour guide that ensured I was never low on oxygen haha Enjoyed my time up there but be prepared for the weather to constantly change, within 2 hrs I had snow sunshine and rain!
I found the drive to Rainbow Mountain was not for the faint of heart like me due to the very narrow road and steep drop off. However,I pushed my boundaries for this amazing experience, and i don't regret a thing. I really appreciate our jolly and energetic guide, JULIAN, who helped put my fears behind. I also enjoyed chatting with him all about the locals lifestyle. Truly unforgettable
A difficult trek up to rainbow mountain but definitely worth it, the views were amazing. Wilbur was a fantastic guide. The food was great. The addition of the Red Valley was a great success
Wilbert and his team are great. Lovely food experience, smaller groups are a win and worth paying a bit more for. Thanks again team.
Amazing! Katia makes easy getting to the top of Rainbow Mountains and she and her team took great care of us along all the the day!
The Rainbow Mountain is a must, you see a mineral covered mountain that resembles a rainbow, but it was made unforgettable by the guide Gil who was fun but also helped when we struggled with the altitude, the cook Dionico whose food was so presentable and tasty and his assistant Benedicto who did everything to please....many thanks!
We had an incredible time on our Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley tour, and we couldn’t have asked for a better tour. From start to finish, our guide Roger and his team took care of all the arrangement. The tasty meals were prepared and served in an unforgettable setting among the beautiful mountains. Due to the high altitude, we walked at a really slow pace, we did not want to slow down others in the group, so we decided to ride the horses up and saved our energy for the last part of the hike. Our guide was supportive, patient, and let us do it at our own comfortable pace, even on the way down. His knowledge of the area and warm personality made the experience even more incredible. Thanks to TreXperience and the whole team for making this such a beautiful and wonderful adventure. I highly recommend this tour to everyone!
This is a must-do if you're in Peru! The views at the top were absolutely amazing. Pepe was an outstanding tour guide - he taught us so much about the history and was very helpful and encouraging during our hike up. You have the option to take a horse to the top if preferred (though I would recommend the hike!). The chef-prepared breakfast and lunch were delicious and eating outside really added to the experience! The small group size allowed us to go at our own pace and fully enjoy the landscape. Make sure to bring plenty of small coins for bathrooms.
Sooo worth it! Rainbow mountain and red valley were seriously breathtaking. I took a horse up and then the walk to the top was not bad at all! Our tour guide Pepe was amazing! He was so friendly, supportive, and informative!! So glad we got to experience this and that we had Pepe to guide us. :)
This was our second excursion with this company and it did not disappoint. It was just 2 of us but we got 4 staff to attend to us. The chef (I think his name was Jonathan) and his assistant made this giant banquet style breakfast and lunch which left us puffed. Everything was delicious and there was so much variety. Our guide Renato was really nice too. He told us all about the history of rainbow mountain and the culture of the area. He was our personal photographer and made sure we got the perfect picture. He helped coordinate a horse for my husband and made sure no one got left behind. The sights were breath taking. We didn’t want to leave. I highly recommend this company!!!!
We had a fantastic day at Rainbow mountain and the Red Valley. The guide Miguel Rozas made a fantastic job and so did the chefs Lucio and Beto. Very good food! Driver Fernando kept us safe on the road
The guide Jose and the two cooks were just absolutely fantastic! I Was travelling on my own and José ws a wonderfull companion, had answers to all my question, let me walk in my own pace, was never rushing me - it couldn't have been better. And the two cooks produced a breakfast and a Lunch which was definetly the best food I had in more than two weeks of traveling though Peru so far. The Organisation by Trexperience was perfect.
We did not only visited Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley, we also experienced Peruvian breakfast and lunch in the valley. Such a wonderful picnic experience. Katie also shared her tradition which is very wonderful. Katie prepared us for the climb with breathing exercise and it did help! Highly recommended for a full Peruvian experience.
