I did a private tour of 8 days with Alpaca Exhibitions and were amazing. For the second half, I had Santiago as guide. He explained with so much passion, and knowledge, not only about the ruins, but about the people, the history, the plants, animals and culture. We visited the Ollantaytambo ruins, and he explained a lot. Then we did the Sacred Valley tour (the salt mines in Moraes and the pits of Moray), and returned to Cusco, where I stayed at a hotel. Every day we would do another tour. The following day the South Valley tour (one pre-inca city, one Inca city with water, a zoo on the mountain) and the last day the Cusco tour (the two ruins on top of Cusco, then the Solar Temple and the Cathedral). I highly recommend Alpaca Expeditions and Santiago as a guide!

Our llameros will introduce you to these animals and discuss their importance and why owning one was a sign of privilege. Today they are disappearing, constantly breaded with smaller animals. We hope to continue the tradition of the Incas and give some llamas work. We do this to support the community that helps protect them. Cannot recommend this company enough. As a solo female traveller I wanted a good experience and what I got were two great guides (Fletcher and Lucio) who made me feel safe and enabled me to take the trek at a safe pace. I hired walking poles, sleeping mat and sleeping bag from Alpaca, all were great quality. The food whilst camping was AMAZING and the trek was absolutely worth the money. I can't recommend Alpaca and the stunning Lares/Inca Trail enough.
This experience was amazing. The route was very well balanced, filled with challenges and incredible landscapes. We were able to meet local people a few times. Frank the Tank was a great guide—friendly, always listening, and he managed a group with very different paces perfectly. We felt safe even though we were high up in the mountains. The sleeping spots were great, and the chef cook and his whole team made delicious meals for us. It was 4-star glamping! Everything went smoothly as planned. Frank also helped us discover Machu Picchu and its secrets. You can tell he takes great pride in sharing such a rich heritage!
It was my first time hiking on a solo trip. As a woman, I felt supported and safe. Everything that is needed is stated in the details. This trip did not skip a beat. I would total recommend this trail to everyone I know. Food was amazing. Porters were great and Franklyn was the best guide that brought everything together. Couldn’t have asked for a better group or team of people. Truly amazing!
It was an amazing expérience And our guide Franck the tank was terrific Very gentle passionnate and we totally put our faith on him to climb a 4650 mountain !!! He answered absolutely all our questions and requests
The Lares trek with Alpaca Expeditions was amazing from beginning to end. It is not cheap but they have camping equipment of good quality, the food was super good 100% of the time and way above what you’d expect while camping in nature. We always spend enough time at every stop to enjoy it. The whole trek was very peaceful, we only encountered locals along the way and we even visited one house, which was a very interesting experience. Soledad was our guide and she was amazing, she brought a good, peaceful and positive energy to our little group of 4. The hotel on the last night was way above what we expected, amazing shower, bed and breakfast, all we needed after 2 nights camping. If I had to do any other trek in Cusco area, I would défense go with Alpaca Expeditions again!
I fully recommend Lares Trek with Alpaca expeditions! I was impressed with the organization and quality of the service. Our guide was excellent, Soledad! I really appreciated all the briefings, we always knew what to expect. I am also gluten intolerant and the team made sure I had plenty of options to eat.
My experience was amazing. My tour guide was Valentine, our chef was Miguel-I don’t recall the names of our porters but there were four of them and they were amazing. Everyone was so kind and supportive and encouraging. We did a really difficult hike up to 15,000 feet to condor pass, which was gorgeous- four of us were over 65 , two of our group were in their late 20s. We had a lovely group we had great social time set up. We had lots of food that was so delicious and nutritious. Valentine was constantly checking on us as we did this climb up with the big pass and down the other side we also were lucky to go and see the local villages, and in one of the villages we were welcomed into a traditional Inca household. The people were wonderful. The culture is wonderful. The people are kind. The art is amazing and Alpaca Tours was so very careful and local and wonderful. We did a second part taking the Inca steps to the Sungate. My friend was able to go- I could not for a health reason at the last minute -our guide on that was Jean Carlo and he too was absolutely amazing so kind both of our guides were full of historical information. and taught us so much. I was so disappointed I could not do the inca trail stairs to the sungate, but JC made sure that I could still camp with everybody and participate with the group- he took very good care of me , and the last day we went up to see Machu Picchu as our full group and it was just absolutely mind blowing! And such a history lessons , again! thank you Alpaca tours for making our trip trips so darn successful. My trip partner was one of my very best friends whom I have known for 55 years. It couldn’t have been a better experience for us remembering our times as little girls and then doing this great big trek. Choose this company! We did our research. and chose Alpaca and it payed off!!!!
We had a fabulous experience. Our tour guide Valentine was helpful patient and provided us with an abundance of cultural and historical information. He supported us throughout our hike with constant attention and information. Chef Miguel prepared excellent meals while we were hiking. There was always a variety of dishes and we especially enjoyed the cake. Fredy and his crew had the campsites completely set up upon our arrival and we’re willing to assist us with anything we needed during the trip. They were a great group to have looking after us . Together these men provided us with an excellent tour.
An amazing trip of a lifetime! I was worried before the trek if we would handle it , we were older than the rest of our group but our wonderful guide Valentin was so reassuring and helped us all the way. He even helped my husband by offering a horse for the steep part pf the hike.he also was great company, even when things didn’t go to plan such as a 5 hour train delay , he handled everything superbly and very calm. The meals cooked on the trip were amazing plentiful and varied all made possible in very basic facilities by our wonderful chef Miguel
We had a great experience doing the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu. Our guide, Valentin, was amazing and made our journey unforgettable, answering all our questions, making sure we all had a good time, and adjusting the pace whenever needed. A special thanks to our chef, Miguel, for the top-quality meals, and to the porters who did a fantastic job and were always ready to help. Armando
What an incredible experience the Lares trek is! We are so grateful to our fabulous guide Celio for making the hard work fun and also to everyone else involved in getting us over that spectacular mountain….the chefs, porters, horsemen and horses….everyone was amazing!
Juan Carlos (Pilco) was a fantastic guide, assisted by Felix. Together they were on top of all of the admin and great company to be around for our Lares Trek tour to machu picchu. The chef Octavio also produced great food for us across the journey. Overall had a great time.
This was the most incredible travel experience and made me want to do more guided treks in the future! Everyone on the staff, but especially our guides Juan Carlos & Romario & our chef Miguel, made this a great trip. Their knowledge of the region, Peruvian history, and more made this especially interesting. I would highly recommend the Lares trek in particular as we only saw 2 other tour groups the entire time, each with 4 people or less. It was empty and peaceful when we went mid-September.
Guides Juan Carlos Zuloaga and Romario were friendly, patient and generously shared their knowledge of local culture and history and chef Miguel always provided healthy, delicious and plentiful meals.
Great experience and enjoyed the experience with the group. Great tour guide. Alpaca provided a great service
We had a fantastic experience with Alpaca Expeditions doing the Lares trek. They are a well oiled machine and extremely professional. The food by our chef Miguel was top notch, truly delicious food and very impressive how he was able to cook such great meals out in the wilderness. Our guide Yojhan (Joey) was the absolute best. He took such great care of us on our trip always making sure we were warm and comfortable and giving tons of great insight into the surrounding nature and local culture and customs. He was particularly helpful supporting my mom who was struggling with altitude sickness and went above and beyond to make arrangements for her so she was comfortable and safe. He was truly the best guide we’ve ever had and are so grateful for all of his help.
This really was the highlight of our adventure in Peru. The early hours took some getting used to but the fantastic breakfast really made up for that. Our guide Valentin was great, he knows a lot and even though English isn’t his first language he could answer all our questions and tell us everything we needed to know. We were with a group of four people which I guess is a little on the smaller size but that definitely didn’t hurt our experience. All in all, if you’re looking for an adventure that’s still pretty doable this is a great option.
We had an amazing time on our tour with Valentin. He made sure everyone was doing well and feeling comfortable throughout the entire trek. He was incredibly supportive, friendly, and attentive from start to finish. He also taught us so much about local life and the culture of the area, as well as the fascinating history of the Incas, which I found especially interesting. Our chef, Mijael, was absolutely the best! We enjoyed so many delicious local dishes throughout the trek, and every meal was better than the last. There was always an amazing variety of options to choose from, and everything tasted incredible. It was honestly impressive to have such delicious and diverse meals while trekking. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience, and Valentin and Mijael played a huge part in making the trek so enjoyable. Highly recommended!
Our guide Valentin was really knowlegeable and kept us informed of the next steps through the 4 days. Our chef Mijael was amazing, food was tasty and there was plenty every meal. Everything went smoothly and we had beautiful views everywhere. I truly recommend you ask for Valentin and Mijael if you think of booking an alpaca expeditions trip!!
We did the 4D-3N Lares trail with our 3 children, aged 12, 11 and 9 years old, and it was a once in a lifetime experience. Everything was well organized, from the briefing the night before, over transportation to and from the hike, to the visit to Machu Picchu. Our guide Yojhan was absolutely wonderful. During our travels we have met many great guides, but Yojhan plays in a league of his own. He was really kind, always checking how everyone was feeling and making sure everyone was at ease. I was worried that we were not fit enough for such a hike, but Yojhan fit the pace perfectly for our group and kept us motivated when it got tough! Along the way, Yojhan has also taught us so much about Andean culture, flora and fauna, and ancient civilizations. We even learned some Quechwa! Yojhan was also really good with our children, learning them a lot during our days together, and we are sure they will remember this experience and meeting Andean people along the way during the rest of their lives. The rest of the staff was also fantastic. Chef Sergio and assistant-chef Edison were able to cook the most wonderful dishes in the middle of nowhere. We are still amazed they managed to bake a beautifully decorated cake to celebrate the passing of the Condor pass. Finally, our porters cannot be forgotten. Without Lorenzo and Mauro, this trip simply would not have been possible. All in all, this experience was absolutely fenomenal for our family. Don't hesitate to go on an adventure of a lifetime with Alpaca Expedition (and Yojhan in particular)!
I went with my girlfriend on the Lares trek and it was such an amazing experience with the best guide I even had (Wilber Ocon), he is friendly, smiling and knows a lot about culture, Mountain and history. Also our chef (Miguel Aranazabal) was amazing! Thank you for the experience.
Wow, so grateful for the opportunity to complete the Lares Trek with such an amazing group of people. Juan Carlos Zuloaga was the most amazing guide we could've asked for--he shared so much knowledge, history and culture of the region with us throughout our trek. He answered all of our groups endless questions about the flora/fauna as well. He made us feel extremely safe of the trek and warned us of possible dangers. He paced the trekking super well and gave us breaks as we needed. His tribute to Pachamama at the Condor Pass will stay with me always--Juan Carlos made us feely truly connected with the land throughout our journey. The food was absolutely incredible, I had no idea we would be eating such fantastic and delicious meals throughout out trek, all made possible by our amazing chef Octavio!! He even made my best friend a birthday cake on our last day!! Truly, the food was an experience all on its own--we got to connect with the culture through the food we ate on another level. (you will NOT be hungry!) Big shout out to our porters and team members as well--from setting up tents at night to ferrying our duffels to giving us warm water/warm packs at night, truly made the experience that much more enjoyable. The trek itself is very reasonable, don't underestimate the altitude or the varying temperatures as was emphasized very clearly prior to setting out. We got so lucky with weather, not a drop of rain! This trek will have you at altitude for about 36 hours, but the difficulty of the walking and hiking is very reasonable. Practically speaking, there is a lot of coordination with driving and trains to get to Machu Picchu at the end--just be prepared to be patient! Machu Picchu itself was amazing and we added on the Waynapicchu hike as well--pretty steep incline up and down, but also very doable! Highly recommend for the best views of Machu Picchu from above!! Would definitely go back for one of the other treks, but only if we can go with Juan Carlos!!
We had a fantastic experience working with Alpaca Expeditions on the Lares Trek in July of 2026. The company is very well organized and thinks of every detail that you might need during your trek. I specifically want to thank Juan Carlos Zuloaga for being the best guide I’ve ever had and making the trip seamless, educational, and fun! His wealth of knowledge really added to my experience and he was always willing to go the extra mile for our group. The food prepared by Chef Octavio blew me away and I could really tell he put his whole heart into every meal. Overall, the value you get from Alpaca is outstanding and I highly recommend everyone to book with this company and to request Juan Carlos Zuloaga as your guide!
One of the most rewarding experiences to be had in Peru. What interested us about the Lares Trek was how immersive the route was: a practically uncrowded trail, access to diverse landscapes, and a glimpse into the lifestyle of rural Andes villages. The route itself was perfectly challenging, but even if things got tough, we were given ample time to rest and recover. Our guide, Valentin, was extremely well-informed, funny, and well-spoken; it’s impossible to think of doing this trip without him. As for camping, we rented gear (tents, mats, and sleeping bags)—it was perfectly fine and comfortable. The food, cooked by the wonderful Octavio, was exactly what we needed to fuel up and continue our journey. Once the hard part was over, we were rewarded with a stunning tour of Machu Picchu—where nothing felt rushed. Truly a unique experience and was only made possible with Alpaca Expeditions. Would do it again 1000/10 times.
I had a wonderful experience on the Lares Trek private tour. I felt everyone on our Alpaca team went above and beyond to make sure our experience went smoothly. The views were gorgeous, and I loved how peaceful it was since there were barely any hikers on the route despite it being peak tourist season. I can’t recommend Valentin as a guide enough—he was excellent at explaining the culture and environment (since he’s local) and had great energy each day as well. Octavio, our chef, made delicious meals on our campsite as well.
The lares trek was a great way to see what highland/Andean life is like for the Quechua people. Our guide Fernando took great care of our group and I felt completely safe throughout the entire trek, (especially as a solo female traveler) I had 100% confidence in him and our porters, horsemen, chef. Their communication was clear and when members of the group were sick, they handled these situations professionally and with safety their priority. They made sure We were comfortable and our chef Cristobal made multiple delicious meals and a cake for the birthday of one of those in our group. The employees are Quechua and take pride in their culture, and ultimately I am so glad I picked alpaca expeditions for this trek. The views along the trek itself were breathtaking. 100% would recommend this company and lares trek if someone is looking to get in touch with Quechua culture and complete a unique trek in Sacred Valley
It was an amazing experience. Our guide, Fernando was extremely knowledgeable. The food prepped by Juliana was outstanding. Would definitely use Alpaca Expeditions again. The local people are warm and inviting. It was great to see their way of life. The Andes are stunning and Machu Pichu did not disappoint. Also, our hiking group was solid all the way around.
Raul Valandra is an exceptional guide. We completed the Lares Trek with him, and his deep knowledge of Peru, combined with the generosity with which he shared his Inca heritage and local traditions, made the experience unforgettable. Raul made sure we crossed every mountain pass safely, always with a fabulous sense of humour that kept the group smiling, even on the toughest climbs. Machu Picchu is extraordinary, but the trek leading up to it was the true highlight. The landscapes, villages and cultural insights turned the journey into much more than a hike. If you’re considering the Lares Trek, we highly recommend requesting Raul as your guide.
This was our second trip in Cusco this year with this company Alpaca Travel which was recommended to us by our friends who used it for few years in a row. The trip was not an easy one and the weather was cold and windy especially at night but our guide (Fernando) and the cook( Juliana) and the helpers and horseman helped us make it unforgettable. Fernando explained about the area, the customs of the local people, the flora and fauna with lots of details. Juliana created wonderful meals for us to warm us and nourish us since we started the hike at around 3400 m and we went over 4600 metres and down again to 3500 metres in 3 days. Being cold they provided some rubbery bags( cannot recall the name) filled with hot water which helped us stay warm in our sleeping bags. Really a trip that we will never forget and i recommend it as the views are spectacular during the day and at night when the sky is full of stars. We love Peru and we will surely return as the people and the food are incredible.
We did the Lares track and summited Condors Pass. Yes, the views are amazing, yes the camping is cold, yes you need good gear. But I think the best part of this experience was not the views or the emtional moments felt hiking Condors pass. It was the cook, Julian's cake. It was a young boy Jonathan who was sweet and reminded us of our son a bit. We gave him a futbol. And our guide Fernado, who kept everyone safe and was attentive of the groups total experience. We loved dinner with our camping partners, who we did not know. A couple from Canada that emigrated from Romania and we're in their 50s/60s. The connection to the staff and group members, and people in the Andes makes this trail phenomenal. You'll get more than just a hiking experience, you'll get a human experience. This trek, while challanging, was certainly *lifetime*.
We booked with Alpaca Expeditions a modified Lares trek where we skipped the last day in Machu Picchu as we already visited it. We had an amazing time trekking with our guide Fernando, very knowledgeable, patient, friendly and accommodating. Fernando made sure that everyone reached the destination safe and sound, and along the way he provided insightful informations regarding Inca history, flora and fauna and geography. The supporting team had an excellent cook as well, Juliana who made incredible dishes and a super tasty cake to celebrate our successful summit of the Condor pass. We visited hot springs, a very nice beginning of the trek, followed by a short hike to our first camp spot; beautiful, but cold. The team made sure we stayed warm and next day was the challenging day summiting Condor pass at 4600m. Beautiful views of the glaciers, turquoise lakes, pastures with llamas and alpacas, everything made the day a highlite of this trek. And at the end of the day the trekkers played soccer with all the Alpaca team and had a lot of fun. The last day we visited a local family and brought them groceries while they showed us their way of life in the Andes. Fernando and Alpaca then organized a visit for us to the salt mines and a nice transfer back to Cusco. Overall, an excellent trek that was made easy by the whole supporting team, especially Fernando - thank you!
Everything was amazing from start to finish. Alpaca Expeditions looks after and thinks of everything for your trek. Can’t recommend them enough. Our guide Ismael, made the trek even better.
I did the Lares Trek with Alpaca Expeditions. They helped me book, and provided clear instructions about the itinerary and what to bring. Before we started hiking, our guide Ismael gave us a detailed briefing, handed out duffel bags, and explained what to expect. He was incredibly attentive to everyone's needs. A few of us were a bit sick, and we all had different hiking paces and camping experience levels. Ismael accommodated every single need with grace, understanding, and patience. What really impressed me was how Ismael incorporated Andean culture into the experience, and his depth of knowledge of pre-Incan and Incan history and culture. He suggested we buy groceries for local families, plus toys and school supplies for the children. I truly enjoyed meeting the Andean kids and their dogs, learning about their lives outside of school, and even playing soccer with one of them. We also visited a 78-year-old Andean elder, who invited us into her home. Ismael translated between English and Quechua as she shared stories about her life. He also taught us Quechua words, showed us how to make ropes, and shared fascinating history about pre-Inca and Inca civilizations. Ismael took the time to photograph us and pointed out the best spots for pictures along the trail and at Machu Picchu. As someone who often forgets to take photos, I really appreciated that. Our chef, Avelino, prepared the most delicious food I've ever tasted: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all while camping. Every day brought something new. When I struggled hiking up Condor Pass, his pancakes, omelettes, chaufa rice, lomo saltado, and soups gave me both energy and motivation to keep going. He even baked us a celebration cake after the hardest day of the trek. All of this was done in a camp kitchen, truly impressive. Going into this trip, I knew I'd booked a reputable company. But it was Ismael's care and storytelling, Avelino and Rufina's amazing cooking, and the porters (the Josés) who made our gear appear at camp like magic that made this experience special, memorable, and unique. I'm especially grateful to Ismael. Talking to others who did the same trek with different guides and companies, I realized that not everyone includes Andean culture or interactions with local people like Ismael does. That aspect meant more to me than I could have imagined, all thanks to him. In a couple of years, I hope to return to Peru for another hike, and I hope Ismael and Avelino will be part of the journey. Thank you all so much for your hard work! Sulpaiky, Tupananchiskama! (Thank you, until we meet again)
An excellent expedition. Ismael is an excellent guide. He explained every possible detail regarding the culture and lifestyle of the villages we visited. He also ensured that we all came away with wonderful memories of the trip, whether through photos or unique activities related to the local culture. My next trip to Peru will once again be with Alpaca Expeditions, and I hope Ismael will be my guide again. We didn't need to worry about tickets or food at all. Alpaca expeditions took great care of everything. I am really satisfied with the trip and greatful with all the efforts Alpaca Team made.
A truly unforgettable experience! The whole trek was extremely well planned down to every detail. Our guide was super friendly and knowledgeable and the food was amazing! Special shout out to our guide Ismael and chef Marcos. They gave us a really special experience of the local culture. The views were incredible and it was so special to be in the mountains for three days. Highly, highly recommend this trek!
Ismael was the absolute best guide. He was so patient and kind with our tired, altitude-sick kids. Every aspect of our dream was as promised and beyond.
We had the most amazing time on our trek. Our team were outstanding; our guide Raúl was exceptional, he was very friendly, enthusiastic, professional, knowledgeable and went above and beyond to make sure we had the best time (and also took some great photos). We felt safe and extremely well looked after for the whole trip. He made it such a memorable experience. Fabian our chef and Henry our sous-chef were superb, every meal was fantastic with multiple plates of different, delicious things - we're veggies and Fabian managed to work with our dietary preferences perfectly, everything was delicious! Our porters Viktor and Isaak were also great, very efficient and helpful. We would 100% recommend Alpaca Expeditions!
Our trek to Machu Picchu was one of the most incredible experiences of our lives. From start to finish, everything exceeded our expectations and created memories we’ll cherish forever. Our guides, Saul and Walter, were absolutely awesome. Their knowledge, positivity, encouragement, and genuine care for everyone in the group made the journey so special. They kept us motivated on the toughest climbs, shared amazing history and stories, and made every day fun and meaningful. We couldn’t have asked for better guides. The entire team was phenomenal. The porters were inspiring, the food was unbelievable (seriously — restaurant-quality meals on the trail), and every detail was handled with professionalism and heart. You can tell this company truly cares about both their guests and their staff. This wasn’t just a hike — it was an unforgettable adventure filled with incredible people, breathtaking scenery, and moments we’ll talk about for the rest of our lives. If you’re considering this trek, do it with this team! We’re so grateful and would recommend them to anyone without hesitation!
We had the bestbtime with Wilber. The trek and service we received was well beyond our expectations. The food was abundant and so so so delicious. Every guide that participated in our journey was kind and a joy to hike with. Wilder was so knowledgeable and delivered the information in small digestible amounts throughout the trek. I can't give enough praise and admiration for our guide and overall experience. 10/10 experience.
This was a once in a lifetime experience! Second day was tough but absolutely amazing! Our guide Rodrigo was great! His local knowledge, traditions and flute playing very fitting The food our chef Rambo whipped up in the cooking tent was incredible! Thank you to the whole team, who were so efficient in setting up camp, preparing meals, transporting all our stuff and setting everything up at the end of the day. The thick Alpaca blanket over our sleeping bags and the hot water bottle were very much appreciated on the cold nights in the tent!
I had a great experience on this trip. My guides were José Santos and Saul Guerra. They had a lot of knowledge and told us lots of interesting things about the place and culture. I also really loves the food, i had a vegetarian diet and it was the best food i have tastes here in Peru. Thanks to Moses.
My experience with this trail/hike has been amazing. The guides Saúl Guerra and Jose Santos were great at showing us everything there is to know, and you could see they were enthusiastic about the knowledge they shared. Moises’s team who made food and fixed the camps for us were very nice and efficient. The food was amazing with a lot of variety and local options. Definitely recommend!!
Very good experience overall. The staff was really nice. The guides ( Saol G and José Santos) had a lot of knowledge that they shared with the group along the trip. The food was amazing and excelent taste. All of the crew was very helpfull all the time and alot of nice people. 10/10 experience.
Really good people and guides, who made the trip very memorable. Saul and jose had a lot of knowledge and Maises made excellent food.
We had an amazing experience on the Lares Trek and can highly recommend it. Our guides, Saul G and Jose Santos, were professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly kind. They took great care of the group throughout the trek, sharing insights about the landscape, culture, and history, and always making sure everyone felt safe and supported. A special thanks to Moises, our cook, who prepared outstanding meals every day. The food was delicious, varied, and far exceeded our expectations—especially considering we were trekking in remote mountain areas. Everything was well organized, the atmosphere was great, and the entire experience was truly memorable. We would definitely recommend this trek to anyone considering the Lares Trek.
We chose the Lares Trek because it best fit our itinerary being three days and two nights before a night in Agua Calientes and Machu Picchu. It was the best decision ever. It is not hard trekking but it is very high and altitude sickness is real. March is still rainy but it does mean you beat the crowds. Over our three days we only saw one other group of hikers - briefly. As we hit the summit at 4,800m it felt as if we had the mountains to ourselves. As you descend from the austere high peaks you reach the verdant and green Sacred Valley. Our guide Pillco was a brilliant steward, ensuring our safety at all times. As were our porters, chef and assistant. How they managed to cook such hearty feasts at altitude remains a mystery. We loved the opportunity of spending time with the villagers on our second night. And will always remember the Guinea pigs under the bed.
We were meant to do the Inca trail but unfortunately due to weather it was closed. However, the Alpaca expedition team was fantastic in helping us find an alternative. The guides, Alvin & Humberto were amazing, and the trip was well organized and well planned. While perhaps more expensive than some of the other options, it was clear that the money went to good places, with the whole team clearly treated well and respected. I would recommend them to any one looking for a high quality tour. The trek itself was a moderately challenging and stunningly bountiful. Pack sturdy hiking shoes and good waterproofs. To say the food was being served on the top of a mountain, it was excellent, and all the provided equipment was good quality. Thank you to the whole team for showing us a small piece of your stunning country.
Our family had a wonderful time on the Lares Trek with our guide Rodrigo and the rest of our Alpaca team! We met with Rodrigo the night before our trek to go over a high level overview of our time together and to have any last minute questions answered. We met early the next time morning and we were off on our adventure! We had a good first day hiking and met up with the rest of the crew at our campsite, which was already set up. Rain was no surprise because we were there in the rainy season, so it was nice to have a communal tent for meals and to gather. Day 2 was some challenging hiking! Our kids were more than capable, but we had to take breaks to catch out breath many times! We started out at beautiful lake and then made our way up...and up. We had some crazy weather - hail! - at the top, but also got to see a herd of alpacas run by so we wouldn't change it! We enjoyed that afternoon visiting a local family and seeing the traditional way of life. Our last day was our descent with beautiful views. We had a small ceremony with coca leaves to show our appreciation for our experience and time on this beautiful hike. We packed using Alpaca's list and had everything we needed for the 3 days. On our last day we went to Machu Picchu with Rodrigo as our guide. He was very patient - we had to wait about an hour an half for the clouds to move enough to have a nice view! Rodrigo had lots of good information to share and we walked away truly appreciating the site and our days together. We unfortunately had an extreme delay at the train station, and while Rodrigo was not technically still 'on the clock' he was extemely helpful during this time.
We completed the Lares trek in late December. Our tour guide Sole was really helpful and informative. We enjoyed the service and the food, giving us a taste of the local cuisine. The trek itself was beautiful. Would definitely recommend to friends and to anyone looking for a more laid back hike with some added experiences to see the region.
