Itinerary
Our day starts early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. The drive to the Rainbow Mountain area takes approximately 2.5 hours. About 30 minutes before reaching the trailhead, we'll stop for breakfast at a cozy restaurant surrounded by the Andean mountains.
Before starting the hike, our guides will provide important guidance to help you complete the route safely and comfortably. The hike begins at approximately 4,800 meters (15,745 ft) above sea level. Since this is a high-altitude region, we recommend hiking at a steady pace, honoring your own rhythm and taking short breaks whenever needed. Altitude is simply part of the Andean experience, and with good acclimatization and the right pace, you'll be able to enjoy the trek even more. Upon reaching the top, you'll be rewarded with one of Peru's most striking natural landscapes: the famous colored bands of Rainbow Mountain, set against the grandeur of the Andes. During the visit, your guide will share information about the mountain's geological origins, local culture, and the significance of this region, and will also set aside time for you to take in the view and capture photos.
After a day of adventure through the Andes, it's time to enjoy a well-earned lunch. The return to the parking area takes approximately 1.5 hours. We'll then stop at a selected restaurant for a buffet lunch featuring the flavors of Peruvian cuisine. After lunch, we'll begin the drive back to Cusco. Upon arrival in the city, our team will drop you off at your accommodations.

Roberto was beyond my expectation. I had an amazing time on this trip.
We had Jehomar as our guide and he was the best. Highly recommend. Everything was smooth from pickup to breakfast to the actual hike up Rainbow Mountian and then lunch and drop off.
The altitude at this site is a major factor. This is of course no reflection on the tour itself. But it is a "know before you go" tip. We took the tour today and had planned to hike the full way. We ended up riding horses up and walking down. Perhaps the tour could allow more time at the hiking level before beginning. A full description of the options for climbing up should be included in the tour description. The mountain itself is beautiful and worth visiting. The only real complaint we had about this tour was the restaurant we were taken to for the included breakfast and lunch. It was mediocre food, with no good beverage options. Two meals there was just disappointing. All in all, the tour could be better.
It was a really good tour that I would highly recommend. They provide food before and after the hike which is really good cause you have to wake up early and then feel exhausted and hungry after the hike. The guide even provided us with walking sticks, which helped a lot. He offered to take pictures of two of us. However, the tour advertised that we will be picked up from our hotel, which didn't happen in our case. Although our hotel wasn't accessible by car, they could've chosen a closer pick-up location at least. Another slight issue was although we were given a meet-up spot, it was a huge square and we had to message the organisers for some time before they got back to us saying they'll be there in 2 mins, which was later than agreed.
Excellent guide, the vehicle was new. Overall very good.
It is a long 3+ hours trip from Cusco but once you get to the top of the mountain the views are awesome. I would highly recommend paying for a horse unless you’re under 30 and very fit. The altitude affect is significant
This is a must see even during rainy season! The coordination of transfers was seamless, there were horses for those who didn’t want to make the entire hike up and/or down, and the guide and driver took great care of us. The meals were also wonderful.
Ernesto made me feel welcome from the beginning. He was concerned for me during the trek and checked in with me several times. I appreciated his concern and professionalism. Our driver William was kind and very skilled. He was the first to greet me when I made it down the mountain!
I had booked this a while ago and had been in communication with them and I even asked before we got to Cusco what time they were gonna pick us up at the hotel. Also note you have to message them first through WhatsApp they’re never gonna reach out to you first. They told me that they would let me know the day before. Day before came, I messaged them and called them because it was already 5 PM an and no one told me about a pick up time. I even had the Hilton call them and nobody responded. Ultimately no one ever showed up and we had to go with a different company. For the price the fact that they did not follow through is really inappropriate. Luckily Hilton had a company and it was a lot cheaper than this place. And they offered the same thing. Definitely will be getting my money back with my credit card to tell them service was not provided.
Mountains views are incredible, trail as well, maximum altitude 5036 m, so it’s interesting to reach such heights. Highly recommend to take additional track. Transportation from Cusco and back takes very long- 3-4 hours, so all trip in reality takes about 13-14 hours
Amazing trip to the Rainbow Mountain! Great tour guide and driver. Long journey but 100% worth it. Would highly recommend!
The trip to the Rainbow Mountain was very animated and happy. William (the driver) and Roberto (the guide) were very helpful throughout the trip and guided us on time and pointed us towards the areas that were important throughout the climb. They were attentive to each member of the trip asking if everyone was ok. They were constantly asking about our health because of a possible touch with altitude sickness due to the height towards the top at 16,500 ft. at the Rainbow Mountain. The breakfast and lunch were excellent with fresh fruits, cooked vegetables, and authentic Peruvian dishes as main courses. Our guide, Roberto, would go back-and-forth among Spanish, English, and Portuguese languages to cater the needs of the nationalities in the tourist van. At the end of lunch, Roberto shared with the group about the history of the Rainbow Mountain: the importance about rescuing his Quechua culture to bring it alive to the current generation; he even taught us a few words in Quechua. He also sang a song in Quechua and played the quena, which is a native Peruvian flute. I would highly recommend this tourist trip. It was well balanced and showed how proud they are about their heritage.
The view of rainbow mountain was amazing! However, our guide, Ernesto went above a beyond for us! He was our guide, photographer, and videographer. My mother doesn’t walk very well, and he made sure she was comfortable and able to make it to the top! Thank you Ernesto for a memorable trip!
Ernesto our tour guide was excellent! He made sure we were very happy and took time to help us in steeper parts of the mountain that are harder to trek. I highly recommend going with this tour on your visit to Cusco and the Rainbow Mountain
Unfortunately had snowfall while at the summit, so couldn’t really see the colors. However, it was cool to be there in those conditions. The ride from Cusco to Rainbow Mountain was especially enjoyable. Lots of small towns, mountains, valleys, and fairly smooth roads through the first two-thirds (dirt roads are the final 1/3). We even enjoyed the scenery more than Sacred Valley. We ate breakfast and lunch (on the way there and the way back) at the same restaurant. The food was okay…buffet style. There was not much narration or information provided by the guide, but he did make sure we were organized and safe. Speaking of safe, the altitude is the ‘real deal’ and even though the hike wasn’t steep or strenuous, several people felt ill and couldn’t make it to the summit. Once you get to the main viewing point (think iconic pictures) you can continue I hiking up to the summit. You will have reached 5,040 meters. Now that is a cool bragging right!
Sr Jeromar is excellent tour guide, very handy and informative during our trip. Also our driver Sr William very well experience and keep the car cabin clean all the time. Really great to have them during our days in Cuzco…
This was a great experience… very well organized, we visited the colors mountain. Everything was on time and all the staff was very professional. I would come back again for sure and I will recommend it to my friends
Really enjoyed the smoothness of the trip. We were picked up at our airbnb and taken for a light breakfast. The food was fresh and yummy. The ride to the mountain has amazing views. We decided to take a bike up the mountain and walk down. Jerver was very attentive and took great pictures for us. He also is very knowledgeable and made sure we all knew what was going on despite having groups with different languages. We decided to walk the way down and it did not disappoint. I totally recommend this tour!
Loved Everything during our tour can’t thank “El Guía” Jerver enough for helping us through the mountain. I would give 5 stars but booking through Viator it does not disclose that this tour is mainly a Brazilian Tour. We had to inform the guide of us not understanding portuguese, and he had no problem with speaking spanish to us (I selected English but speak spanish to) this is extra time taken translating and repeating himself and taking time on us , which the guide had no issues but it may have been an inconvenience to the Brazilian folk with us and made me feel some type of way. And on another note, there was no contact from the agency at all, it says to contact via whatsapp- but I couldn’t find any number through Viator app , I had to look for it by googling the travel agency and reaching out to confirm the set time with them. Again great experience, great guide and driver.
Very good experience with Jerver! He adapt himself to the customer and make sure everyone is happy even if sometimes there's difference between people! I strongly recommend!
Fantastic day! Nice buffet breakfast en route. Altitude makes the hike extra challenging but our guide was supportive and encouraged us to the summit. He also provided a herbal remedy to aid breathing. Horses and motorbikes are available if required. Horses stop before the steep assent to the summit. So some hiking still required to reach the top. A must do-Totally worth the early start.
My family had an incredible time exploring the Rainbow Mountains. The breathtaking views were only enhanced by our exceptional tour guide, Percy, who was both knowledgeable and attentive. He not only shared fascinating insights about the landscape but also made sure everyone in our group was comfortable and well-prepared for the high elevation. His dedication ensured that we could fully enjoy every moment of our trip.
Percy is an excellent tour guide. We were only able to reach the peak of rainbow mountains because of his support and care.
Guide: Roberth Driver: Jimmy Preserve the nature, avoid littering, respect the Quechua. A class of quechua culture and music at the end of the hike! Empathetic funny guide and responsible driver ! Marvelous enviromental experience, we are humbled by nature in Peru.
We had an amazing time with Roberth! An excellent guide, he carried a lot about all of the group. Waited for all the members, shared information about the local community. A super cool guide. Super fun experience.
The views of Rainbow Mountain were amazing! Our guide Ernesto was great and patient since some of us had a hard time going up. We had a family member that needed oxygen while going up and he was kind enough to help us. He took pictures of us once we went up and told us the points to stand and get great photos. Our driver William was nice and even helped our family get back into a warm car since the wind started to pick up.
Good narration & handling of our needs. Especially with small kids. As the peak was full of people Jerver our guide waited for the right moment for the perfect picture moments
The tour guide was great and super helpful! Our group had a mix of hiking abilities and he was super helpful in getting us up the mountain. We also stopped for breakfast and lunch and had great meals
Percy was great, very attentive making sure everyone made it up the mountain without any problems. It was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend
We had a great time! The guide was super helpful and helped us get up and down the mountain. We also stopped for breakfast and lunch which was delicious. The only thing I would ask for more of is information about the mountain - when it was found, why it is the colors it is, etc)
Rainbow Mountain - what a unique place!! Be prepared for the altitude, I was definitely feeling it! So happy I decided to visit this beautiful mountain on my trip to Peru. Our guide Ernesto was very friendly, helpful and enthusiastic which made the trip even more enjoyable. Thank you mi amigo!
Well organized trip, included breakfast and lunch buffet style. Long ride from Cusco, Jehomar our travel guide did a good job punctuating the trip with interesting tidbits of information. On the hike itself , they made everything easy in terms of choices, and of making sure that we were comfortable. Great experience
Great experience! The logistics were well handled. Tasty breakfast and lunch were included. Jehomar was a terrific guide and explained about the history of the area and mountain. Would highly recommend!
The tour was good. We basically drove from Cusco city center to rainbow mountain and spent some free time there. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style. Jerver was attentive and made sure everyone in the group was doing okay with the high altitude during the hike.
The views were beautiful and the guide was great at checking on our group. The hike was somewhat difficult but it was worth it!
Jerver took us to Rainbow Mountain for the day and guided us well! The mountain has very high elevation so he took care of the people on the group who were struggling and then spent time with the rest of us to give us information on the mountain (where the colors come from, etc.) and help us take photos. Breakfast and lunch were yummy too!
Our tour was organized by Viagens Macchu Picchu..and we had an amazing time..our guide Jerver picked us on time from the hotel and gave us all the information..he was very patient with us while climbing the mountain since we were taking lot of breaks..but no rush..he clicked amazing pictures for us too..and i was glad we had English speaking guide 😊 Freddy drove us upto the mountain and its 4 hrs on way from Cusco to the mountain..roads are winding and dangerous to drive but he did fantastic job!
The tour was great.. the place is awesome.. bit of a climb especially the last part, and high altitude, but our guide Jerver was very encouraging and helpful. Kudos to the great team- Jerver and Fredy, who managed the drive very skillfully. Jerver was very kind to take superb photos.. Highly recommend the team and the tour..
A great hike despite the lack of oxygen. Great driver as always Valentin and our best man guiding us, Frank. Great views, cool lamas with hats.
The hike to the summit can be quite difficult because of the high altitude, but the views are so worth it. Our guide Franco took excellent care of the group, and our driver Valentin made sure we got there and back quick and safe.
It was a great experience. The guide Jerver paced the walk to the top. He was very helpful accompanying the slower ones making sure everyone was feeling well. Our driver Fred drove us thru safely.
Jehomar is a very good tour guide. He provided very good information about the tour. He also took care of the group very well.
Beautiful view and well organized. It is an early morning, but it for sure is worth it. Jehomar was able to toggle between Spanish, Portuguese, and English very well.
Very beautiful place. All the valley is incredibly beautiful, the scenery in the drive there is impressive. The hike up the mountain is a bit challenging, but can be done in around 1h. Our guide Jeomar was very friendly and helpful.
The trip was well planned, with a good breakfast on the way there and lunch on the way back. Our guide Jehomar was great, very helpful and patient; the one thing that could have been improved is his English as most of the commentary was delivered in Portuguese.
Fun day! The hiking does take its toll because of the altitude. Our guide was very patient with me - I have knee problems and he helped me get a horse and waited for me when others ascended faster. I was well taken care of. I speak Spanish and English. The tour was designed more for Portuguese speaking people so I feel without my Spanish we would have missed out on some interesting insights.
I’m very glad to have Jerver be our tour guide for the last tour to rainbow mountain. The sight of him is assuring and comforting because of our previous positive experience with him at lake humantay. He is by far one of the very enthusiastic guides that I have experienced. I have no qualms of recommending him to other tourists.
Jerver is our guide for this very interesting hike to this beautiful and colourful mountain. He helped us took very beautiful pictures. The hike is smooth because of Jerver's help.
View of 🌈 Mountain is awesome. Jerver is helpful and informative. ......recommendations were good too......--_____
