We had such a great time learning about the animals. Yeremy was an excellent guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and cared very much for the animals. It was very clear that the animals were well taken care of. The facility was very clean. Don't miss this. Great tour for an acclimation day.

Our family visited this beautiful place, and we enjoyed every minute of it. What a great place for animals to live! Many animals will be released if they can, and this is a major goal of theirs. However there are also many animals that are now too dependent on people and will live their lives here. While there are enclosures for specific animals, there is so much freedom for them to roam. They also work with other organizations for reproducing animals that are endangered or at risk, such as the spectacled bear and the Andean condor. We got to get so close with these animals, even pet many of them, as they are friendly and obviously happy and well cared for. What an incredible experience! Very kid friendly!!
If you are in #Cuzco #Peru go to the Santuario Animal de Cochahuasi.. 30m from town, locals giving a second chance to injured wild animals, returning them to the natural habitats once they are ready and taking care of others that won’t survive out there.
Off the beaten path little sanctuary was agreat way to spend an afternoon. A wonderful variety of local animals and the volunteers were so informative and excited to share their knowledge. Highly Recommend!
first of all, it was an amazing experience!! I would definetly recommend going there as a family, with friends or even with a lover! I personally went there with my family with 3 kids and my wife. my kids had so much fun there im really glad i booked a place there! the stuff there was really friendly towards us and even helped us when we had questions! I would love to go there again with my friends someday but sadly we live quite far away which means i cant go there for the next few years but i would definetly want to go there again! 10/10 experience!!
Went here with a friend and we equally love animals! The animals here are so well loved and you can tell they are taken care of very well! Would highly recommend making this apart of your Cusco adventures as all the money goes back to helping these beautiful animals!
Aurelio was a wonderful guide! We enjoyed feeding the llamas and alpacas the most. A great cause to patronize and a very cool activity not far from Cusco!
Our guide was very knowledgeable and they had a good variety of animals.
All of the staff were so kind and accommodating!
This was my favorite thing we did in Cusco. It is evident that everyone who works here is passionate about caring for the animals and I learned so much. Cannot recommend this experience enough.
Terrific Experience, Great Guide, Worth the VIP Tour ticket price, as it also goes to wuch an important cause!
Benjamin was our English tour guide throughout the sanctuary and he was so lovely! So insightful and showed us all of the animals, and let us feed the alpacas!! The animals were so happy here, which was nice to see. So cheap as well! Loved it so much, and it’s cheap to get to! It was just under an hour!
These people take care of poor and sick animals that have been rescued from a terrible life. The visit can be quick and you are welcome to stay as long as you want. The people are kond and have a lot of knowledge. Please visit and donate to keep it alive
Benjamin gave us some good info on the animals that were rescued and brought to the sanctuary. We got to see up close and interact with the local wildlife that are native to Peru and the Andes, especially the famous Andean condors. This is a great visit if you want a short break from the many moderate level activities available in the Sacred Valley area.
We chose to come here to see the wildlife native to Peru we wouldn’t see otherwise like the pumas, condors, and Andean bears. It was really neat to see these animals. However, the tour we received at 3:30p (1.5 hrs before close) felt like we came at 4:59. It was only about 10 min and based on what other people are saying including our taxi driver, that is not normal. Feel a little cheated. We walked back to the beginning and looked at what animals we could for a few minutes longer. We paid a taxi to drive 35 min there, wait for up to an hour and a half and drive 35 min back because of the recommendation of our hotel concierge, reviews, and taxi company recommendation. We were there for maybe 30 min because of this shortened time, we paid a lot of money and spent more time in the car and for the taxi than at the sanctuary. I will say that the guide explained that the majority of the animals at least right now, are not getting released into the wild for various reasons that make sense. So I think they have helped at least a portion of the animals in a legit manner and are protecting them. The logistics behind the program and protection and veterinary care weren’t described. But again, you likely won’t see these animals anywhere else.
Amazing Experience. We could see and interact with many snimals and birds native to peru and Andes including condors, puma, llama, alpaccas. The guide explained how these birds and animals are rescued during poaching attempts. They are then treated and released in the wild if possible.
Top family experience in Cuzco!! We went with our two children (7 &10) and got to see up close condors, eagles, pumas, the "oso de anteojos' known in the UK as Paddington bear! monkeys, turtles, lamas, vicuñas, tucan, parrots, and more! The guides were super knowledgeable and friendly. We paid for the animal encounter which allowed us to feed the animals. The proceeds go towards the rehabilitation of the animals and to re-introduce them into the wild. It was interesting to hear the stories of how the animals were rescued and how they are recovering.
What an excellent place for these animals. The sanctuary takes good care of the animals and you can tell the animals are very comfortable with their caretakers. The sanctuary helps give these animals a safe place to heal and get well with hopes of returning to the wild.
Visiting the Cochahiasi Animal Sanctuary was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip to Peru. Nestled in a peaceful setting, this sanctuary is a haven for animals rescued from abuse, neglect, and illegal trafficking. The passion and dedication of the team are evident from the moment you arrive. What sets Cochahiasi apart is its commitment not only to care but also to reintroduce animals back into the wild whenever possible. They work tirelessly to rehabilitate animals, preparing them for a second chance at life in their natural habitats. For those who cannot be released, the sanctuary offers lifelong care in a safe and enriching environment. The tour was incredibly insightful. Every animal has a name, a story, and a personality — and you get to learn them all. Hearing about their journeys and seeing the impact the sanctuary has made was both heartbreaking and uplifting. What makes the experience even more meaningful is knowing that your entrance fee and any donations go directly toward supporting the animals and the sanctuary’s incredible conservation work. It’s a place where your visit truly makes a difference. If you’re looking to connect with nature, support a worthy cause, and witness the resilience of animals firsthand, I can’t recommend Cochahiasi Animal Sanctuary enough.
Joseph took us through the entire sanctuary! He knows the animals so well and their primary goal is always reintroduction when possible. We were so impressed with the care these special animals receive! Cannot recommend enough! Your entrance fees go directly towards feeding, bring extra soles for donation, they are so appreciative.
Really helpful and informative staff, had a quick tour, then time to look around by ourselves. Amazing to see (and in some cases touch!) these birds and animals up close and see the care the staff take with them. An easy Uber drive there and back from Cusco.
Very nice animal preserve with local Peruvian animals and a guide to show you through the whole area in 45 minutes
This is a family owned private sanctuary and you can really tell the animals are very happy and looked after. Our guide Alberto had amazing English and spoke about the sad stories behind the animals and their plans on how to conserve the species and release them back into the wild if it’s safe. Very interactive experience feeding Llamas , Alpacas, deer, parrots, and even doing an enrichment activity with the monkeys. If you are in Cusco I fully recommend it. On GetYourGuide you can pay and they come and pick you up, includes the tour and then drop you off afterwards.
A highlight in our trip: seeing so many beautiful animals being treated the way they should be. The workers visibly give them so much love and are very passionate and involved with every single animal. Will never forget our visit!!! Thank you Alberto for your explanations and guiding us. We got the opportunity to feed alpaca’s, monkeys, parrots and more…
I spent 10 days in Cusco and this was by far my favourite day out. 10/10 visit, loved every second! My guide was very knowledgable about each individual animal, knowing their back story and what will happen to them in the future. I love their mission, they want the animals to be free if possible and back into the wild. If this isn’t possible they’ll live a happy life at the sanctuary. They have so many animals at the moment including the mighty condor, pumas, parrots, bears, coati, llamas, alpacas, deer, even a toucan! You can get up close and personal without stressing the animal out so this is the most ethical animal attraction ever! I got the bus from Cusco town which was really easy and only cost 9 soles round trip (details on the bus on their website main page). It takes about half an hour. If you don’t want to get the bus I think an uber or taxi wouldn’t be that much. I also heard you can visit here with get your guide website (and probably trip advisor). There is also a cafe and gift shop here - some of the proceeds from the gift shop go towards the sanctuary so I got my souvenirs here. This place definitely deserves more visitors and support, they do amazing work! I think this place is suitable for everyone, kids and adults should love it! I think it was quite accessible also, a few stairs in places but generally good for accessibility.
I would like to highly recommend Cochahuasi animal sanctuary! This is a very special place which is worth every cent and minute of your time. The guides are highly knowledgable and nurture the animals with so much love and attention. You can interact with the animals, learn about their stories, and the work of the sanctuary to rehabilitate them. Please book and enjoy this outstanding experience!
Lot of beautiful animals and polite guide who spoke good english. Guide incluede to entry fee. All money went to animals.
Alberto is so passionate about the animals and it is evident from the way they all are hanging out around him and the way he speaks about animal rights and proper treatment. Most of the animals he has have been confiscated from illegal pet sales (black markets) or injured animals that are too domesticated to be released into the wild. It was beautiful to feed the alpacas and llamas, feed the parrots, see monkeys, the pumas and of course, the condors up close and flying. It is a family-run business and truly, everyone was kind and welcoming. They have a gift shop to support their work and upkeep of all the food, terrain and animals, so if you can support them with any purchase or leave any donations, they greatly appreciate it. Gracias Alberto por todo! Una gran experiencia, muy linda!
Not like a zoo, the animals are rescued and you can tell they are comfortable and happy. Felt grateful to get so close to them and was an appreciated experience. Tour guide was solid too!
My husband and I visited based on strong reviews from Google and Trip Advisor. Once there, I unfortunately realized that we were not at a real animal sanctuary. The enclosures were small and poorly maintained. The animals looked ill and unkempt. There were no vets or zoologists involved in the organization. The stories about releases into the back into wild were vague and implausible. I witnessed a beheaded alpaca being fed to a puma. I understand that pumas eat red meat, but these pumas do not seem to have any chance of going back to the wild (or even a larger cage), and the alpacas do not have free range before being slaughtered. The condors had no room to spread their beautiful wings. I believe it is a for profit scam. People need income, but not at the expense of these majestic beings. Please do not support.
Wow! What an experience - we hired a taxi from our hotel and purchased our tickets once we arrived. A personal guide took us around and explained the purpose of the sanctuary and a bit of the history behind each of the animals. What a worthy cause - and most if not all of these animals would not have survived if not for this company's involvement.
Lovely experience! Fantastic to see how they care for a variety of animals; lots of enrichment activities and plenty of space to keep them happy. Got to see a couple of condor flights from inside their enclosure (!); such impressive creatures! Definitely worth a visit - you can feel good about putting soles toward a beautiful cause. If you can do a tour, there’s a lot of interesting information about all the inhabitants, but it’s not necessary.
This place is trully a must! It is easily accessible from Cusco and we visited on our way to Pisac. It's a place where rescued animals are taken care of, rehabilitated and with any luck released back into the wild. They had some incredibly rare animals there. There were andean bob cats, often referred to as the ghosts of the andes. Condors!! And even puma! It is really worth stopping by. The staff are incredible and highly motivated. Was a real highlight of our trip to Peru. They rely on donations and tickets so it's a win win to make this part of your trip! Remember the animals are wild animals and being rehabilitated for release. Amazing place.
This is an amazing place, that takes in animals that have been abused, trafficked, abandoned or treated poorly. For your entrance fee, you get a guide that will walk you through and explain all the situations, as well as the history of each animal, and what their current status is. There are some that can be released back to the wild upon completion of rehab and those that cannot, have a permanent home here. The keepers/guides are very passionate about their care of the animals and are thrilled to talk about them! If you take a cab or an Uber there, for a small fee, they will wait for you to take you back to your hotel or the city. It's about 30 minutes from Cusco, but so worth the visit! If you can donate extra, I know they will appreciate it!
Visited the sanctuary as reviews seemed good and saw a supposed actual release video on the Instagram page, however still left feeling a conflicted. The guide was clearly passionate about the animals and told us release dates of some but did say some would never be released. He said most had been rescued from trafficking. The Andean cat was pacing and meowing, it did not look in a healthy mental state. The cages are quite tiny as well. I can only hope the money spent does go towards releases
I expected this experience to be fantastic, based on past reviews, but it is so much more than that. Albert is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his work and the animals, and we learned a huge amount from him. It is clear that he has a mutual trust and respect with the animals and birds in his care, and he is doing everything to provide them with the best lives possible. We were given lots of time to spend close to the birds and animals, learning about them and taking pictures. We saw the beautiful pumas and wildcats being fed. I loved the spectacled bears, and my highlight was the condors flying so close above us that one even touched my head with his enormous wing, an Incan blessing Albert said. I can’t put into words how special it felt to go around seeing all the wonderful rescued animals and birds with Albert - you will just have to go and see for yourself. I’m sure you will take away many special memories with you too!
This is a great place to stop between Cusco and the Sacred Valley. My husband and I visited with our three sons. My sons who love animals were absolutely smitten--they loved feeding and petting the alpacas & llamas plus seeing the adorable animals (monkeys, turtles, bobcats, condors, etc.) You can only walk through the sanctuary with a guide, and our guide was fabulous--giving us enough time with each animal and enough individual information about each one. My middle son and husband were skeptical that they'd enjoy this stop, but both ended up loving it.
Great experience. You can see the animals, know their history, and even interact with some, like llamas and alpacas. The people at the sanctuary are doing a great job nursing them and returning some into the wild. Worth a visit.
I'm so glad we found this place. I noticed on the map between Cusco and Pisac and my kids love animals so it seemed worth a visit. It was a great way to spend a few hours. We did a VIP tour and had the chance to feed some of the animals. I get that some reviewers worry about whether the animals are returned to wild or not, and I can't comment on that, but what I did see was content, well cared for animals that had space to roam. It was not at all like a zoo, and the setting was lovely. Kids really enjoyed it.
This place is amazing! Helping a lot of wild animals that had suffered in the past and now having the time of their lives!!! Many animals , monkeys, parrots, bears , pumas And much more. I recommend you all visit this place🙏🏻
First off it doesn't look like a Sanctuary. The animals are in cages and the living areas are quite small. It was only after a caretaker came and showed us around did we learn how abused the animals were prior to being rescued and placed here. For example 2 of the pumas were in Lima at a Disco club and had their teeth and claws removed :( the sanctuary rescued them and actually made dentures for them so they can now eat meat. There are bears, condors, pumas, monkeys, llamas and alpacas as some of the bigger animals to see. One thing to note, if you pay at the Sanctuary it's 20soles per person vs $10usd per person here on Viator. Definitely a good cause to support either way.
We loved this place! They do excellent work rehabilitating animals which have been injured mainly by the thoughtless actions of humans, if they can they release back into the wild but if not they look after them there. There are condors, parrots, monkeys, coati, llamas (one called Bob Marley cos he had dreads!), wildcats, a puma and a bear! The highlight has to be when the condors fly above your head and perch behind you eyeing you up for their next meal?! Thanks to our guide a German volunteer (sorry forgot your name) They are short of money and some of the cages they admit need expanding, so we gave them extra on top of the 20 soles admission
This was such an amazing experience ! It was part of our stop as we hired a car to drive us around sacred valley. Beautiful rescued animals with a tour guide as part of your ticket. There are Andean bears, llamas, condors, monkeys, toucans, deers. The condors were our favorite. They flew right over our heads with their massive wings. An amazing experience. This is a must visit to help the rescue of these animals.
This is one of the highlights of my 18 day trip! Such a cool experience, the animals appeared to be safe, well cared, and content. My guide spoke excellent English. There were very few people there. Only hitch was I took an Uber to get there, not realizing how remote the sanctuary is. Would recommend arranging both to and from transportation so you don’t get stranded!
Was a great little excursion just outside of Cusco. We got picked up in the morning and driven to the sanctuary where we then had a great tour of the enclosures and had amazing encounters with the animals. Would definitely recommend.
This place is absolutely amazing! The owner walked us through the sanctuary and answered all of our questions. We got to feed and pet the alpacas which was a highlight! It was also very cool to see condors so close up. They have all kinds of animals from across the Andes that they have rescued and are rehabilitating. They release the animals they can and take care of those they can’t. We took a taxi from Cusco and had Our driver wait while we were in the sanctuary and he took us back to Cusco for about 100 soles total) Super easy and fun afternoon trip for a great cause!
Incredible animal sanctuary caring for animals that have been rescued from trafficking, illegal pet ownership, abandonment and some who are suffering from ailments that prevent them from survival in the wild. Tour was short (less than an hour) but thorough with tons of information and our guide was fantastic. Super beautiful shops too with proceeds that go back to funding for the sanctuary. The condor flight was jaw-droppingly cool as well as learning about their rehab & release program. Definitely worth the trip if you are in Cusco!
This place takes care of some wild animals like condor and pumas, We thrust on their work but seems that is a very small space for those animals. there are some very nice llamas and alpacas, the people who works here is very nice.
This was such an unexpected surprise. We did it on a whim. We visited the sanctuary with Alberto, who was knowledgeable, courteous and really fun! The rescue work that they are doing there is incredible. From feeding Llamas, Alpacas, monkeys and birds to having Condors land within a foot of our heads, this was an amazing and unforgettable day. Well worth it!
We had a wonderful time here. The animals are precious and it's awesome to get to see them so closely. Our tour guide was John and he was wonderful- friendly, funny, and accomodating. Take your time and spend some cash, it's for a great cause!
