This was a beautiful hike. Cristian was an amazing guide and the meal afterwards was delicious. I highly recommend for anyone looking to check out Cajas.

Itinerary
Your Cajas National Park tour begins with a scenic drive from Cuenca into the western Andes. As the city gives way to mountain landscapes, your guide will introduce the park’s páramo ecosystem, its glacial lakes, and its importance as a protected water source for southern Ecuador. Cajas is part of the Macizo del Cajas Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in 2013.
Our first stop is Tres Cruces, one of the most impressive viewpoints in Cajas National Park. This area marks the continental water divide, where rainfall flows either toward the Amazon Basin or toward the Pacific Ocean. We will take a short walk nearby to enjoy the highland scenery, dramatic mountain views, and the fresh air of the Andean páramo.
We continue to the Toreadora Refuge, the main access point to Cajas National Park and one of its most visited areas. Located beside Toreadora Lake, this stop offers beautiful views of the surrounding wetlands, hills, and native vegetation. The area is also an ideal place to understand how the park’s lakes and sponge-like páramo help regulate water for Cuenca.
From Toreadora, we begin a guided hike along Route 1, a moderate 3-hour trail through páramo grasslands, wetlands, rocky paths, and high-altitude lagoons. The guide will adjust the pace to the group, making the experience comfortable while taking time to enjoy the views, observe unique native flora, and possibly spot local bird species such as the beautiful blue Tit-like Dacnis, highland hummingbirds, and other Andean birds. Unlike a simple sightseeing visit, this tour is designed to experience Cajas on foot, with meaningful stops along the route to appreciate the park’s geology, biodiversity, and quiet mountain landscapes.
During the hike, we will visit the Polylepis Forest, one of the most unique environments in the park. These remarkable high-altitude trees, known for their thin, layered bark, create a rare and peaceful forest landscape surrounded by mountains and lagoons. Walking through this ancient-looking forest can feel like stepping into a scene from The Lord of the Rings, with twisted trees, soft moss, and misty Andean scenery. Your guide will explain why this ecosystem is so important for biodiversity and conservation in the Andes.
After the hike, we will enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant near the park. Trout is the local specialty and a favorite option after walking through the cool highlands, while vegetarian and vegan options are also available. This stop adds a warm cultural touch to the day and supports local businesses connected to the communities around Cajas National Park.
After lunch, we return comfortably to Cuenca, completing a full-day experience that goes beyond a quick viewpoint stop. With guided hiking, scenic landscapes, local insight, and time to connect with the park’s ecosystems, this tour offers a deeper and more active way to experience Cajas National Park.

We had the pleasure of taking two tours with Wilson during our visit to Cuenca: one to Ingapirca, Gualaceo, and Chordeleg, and another to Cajas National Park. Both were wonderful experiences and highlights of our trip to Ecuador! Wilson was professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive throughout both excursions. He shared fascinating insights into Ecuador’s history, culture, and natural beauty, making each destination even more meaningful. Our visit to Ingapirca, Gualaceo, and Chordeleg was a fantastic opportunity to explore the region’s rich archaeological heritage, local traditions, and craftsmanship. The Cajas National Park tour was equally memorable, with breathtaking landscapes and beautiful scenery. Wilson made both days enjoyable and stress-free, and we truly appreciated his hospitality and dedication to ensuring we had a great experience. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide during our time in Cuenca.
Luis was really nice and it was a really nice hike.
Diego was great! Just the right amount of walking
Luis was so fun to talk to. He told us a lot about Ecuador. He also was curious and wanted to hear about our country. We had a great time talking and learning from each other. He drove very safely, especially when the fog was thick coming down the mountain.
Nice day in Cajas. Alejandro was a very good guide and made the day more enjoyable.
We had a half-day trip to the National Park near Cuenta. The weather was very cold and rainy, so we had to modify the trip, but Adrian, our guide, was very informative and gave us a good tour. Greatly recommended!
Our experience with Luis was amazing! This was our first time doing a hike like this and he made it incredibly enjoyable! Amazing views & an awesome lunch to finish it out!
Fabulous walk in El Cajas national park with an excellent guide, Diego. He was very knowledgeable and patient as the altitude slowed me down on some of the steep uphills. Please note that the tour was not as advertised, as the laguna Llavuicu has been closed since 2024 & the tour itinerary has not been updated. The longer walk in El Cajas was an excellent alternative. Lunch was delicious.
Awesome experience, Andres was an amazing guide with a lot of care and love for what he does.
I've seen a lot of nature parks and protected areas in Ecuador and across the Americas and can say this is truly one worth visiting. Xavier was our guide and did an excellent job of responding and adapting to collecive interests and abilities. He knows a lot about flora and fauna, making the experience truly excellent. There were so many trail options, and he did a great job describing them so we could decide the pace and difículty we were willing to go to see as much as possible. If you have never hiked in Paramo before, be prepared for cold humidity and wet shoes.
Three of us went with Diego for a trip from Cuenca to Parque national Cajas. DIego was fantastic and taught it is so much about the ecosystem and the park walk. I highly recommend this trip once you have acclimated to the high altitude in Cuenca.
Attentive, very helpful and knowledgeable, learned a lot and had a great time!
We ordered trip just several hours before departure. We had english speaking guide and enjoyed the trip.
Diego was an outstanding guide, full of botanical and historical knowledge. He is friendly and fluent in English. Cajas was absolutely gorgeous, and we look forward to hiking there more when we move here. The trout lunch was perfect after a 3-hr-hike at 13,000 ft elevation. We highly recommend this tour.
Javier was an excellent guide. Had a beautiful hike through a portion of the park and learned a lot about the rich cultural history of the area
Wilson was awesome! He was accommodating and fun. Everything was perfect. Cajas is beautiful. Lunch was delicious!
Our driver, Moises, took us up toward Cajas, making a stop at our request at the Chocolatería Dos Chorreras compound for delicious hot chocolate and a peaceful break. Afterwards, we went to a viewpoint and then Cajas National Park where Moises took us on a 3 mile trail off the beaten path. Weather was overcast and there had been recent rain, but Moises took us slowly and stopped frequently to point out plants and flowers and answer all of our questions. A traditional trout lunch followed at a lovely restaurant. We enjoyed Moises’ company and recommend this tour.
We rolled dice on this trip and came up with a winner when we had our guide Luis take us to the top of the Cajas. He is the constant teacher in English about the geology, botany, traditional medicines, culture, and history. He shared about local recommendations, beautiful family, and his love of Ecuador. He’s been selected as a national Guide for the entire country. The agency he works for has historically handled all the logistics for short or regional long trips. When I think of a concluding statement I am proud to say: It was inspiring to be with Luis and hope to share time with him again.
The park is beautiful and our guide, Moises, was very knowledgeable. Unfortunately it was very cold and rainy, so make sure you come prepared with hiking boots and cold weather/rain gear! We were not quite prepared for the weather conditions.
Diego meet us right on time, greeted us and informed us that we were the only people in the group for the day. He was absolutely amazing the entire day. Diego is a wealth of information about his beautiful town of Cuenca as well as the Caja National Park. We had wonderful conversations throughout the day, and we saw beauty everywhere despite the chilly weather. This tour with Diego is not to be missed. Thank you for the wonderful day.
The tour and our guide (Wilson) were great! The weather was not optimal, however we still had a great time. The scenery was beautiful and Wilson was very knowledgable about the history and biology of the Cajas.
Pedro was a fantastic guide, very personable and very willing to customize the experience to whatever his guests wanted. Food was also excellent.
Did the Cajas National Park with Wilson. His knowledge of the plants and species, was exceptional. He made my trek enjoyable with constant explanation. The restaurant where we had lunch was top notch with excellent food choices. Value for money.
Fabulous hike with some of the most picturesque vistas we have ever seen. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and was able help us negotiate the terrain safely. It is a very difficult hike with significant changes in elevation - not for the faint of heart, but worth every minute!
If you are visiting Cuenca, you must see this wonderful natural spot. I was so pleased to book this tour with Cuenca Bestours as from start to finish it was a delightful day. It was a wonderful day to explore Cajah National Park with highly knowledgeable and professional tour guide Eddy. After visiting the National Park we had our lunch in a restaurant with a stunning view. It was a great spot to finish our day by overlooking to green valley and hills during our meal.
Incredible day trip with Wilson. He was so knowledgeable about the region which really enriched the experience of hiking through the magical national park. Pick up and drop off was seamless and lunch was great too!
Great hike with truly mind-blowing views. Shout-out to our guide Luis Gonzalez for the seamless experience! Luis went above and beyond to share information about Cajas as well as some great recommendations for in and around Cuenca. He also patiently answered all of our questions as first-timers to Ecuador and helped us get the most out of our trip.
Generous, our guide, was excellent, knowledgeable about botany, history and geography. Cajas is a magical place. Be prepared for wet ground and possible rain.
Diego was a great guide -- very friendly, shared great information and really guided the tour in a way so that we could each enjoy it despite different fitness levels, languages and interests. The park was beautiful. The lunch was wonderful. Highly recommend.
Every Ecuadorian and tourist could not stop talking about how beautiful Cajas is. I had to see it for myself. Wow doesn't even begin to touch the surface of how beautiful the park is. Sign up for this tour with Moises, you will not regret it. We did a 3 hour hike. It was incredible. It was cloudy when we started but the sun cam out towards the end. Heads up, you are hiking into altitude (13K+) so stay hydrated, take your time, and take coca to help alleviate with altitude sickness. You can buy in the shop next to the bathroom.
Andres was great guide, spoke very good English and really knows a lot about national park. And the sun appeard for the last part of the trek was, so we saw Cajas in all colors.
Wilson was an amazing guide and we had a wonderful time visiting Cajas National Park! We were back in Cuenca around 3:30pm and everything worked out smoothly. We really recommend visiting this park if you have a chance to do so!
Excellent guide who was very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the area and its flora and fauna. We had a great day and saw parts of the park we would not have been able to with the public bus. The lunch was delicious too!
Amazing time! We couldn’t have asked for a better guide to share the culture and nature of Ecuador with. We did 2 separate tours with Wilson and they made our visit to Ecuador unforgettable. We did the shared day trip to Cajas national park and Wilson guided us through the day. We learned all about the animals, plants, climate, and geology of Cajas. The pace was perfect and we were enjoyed every moment. Our time with Wilson was so great on our first tour that we canceled our flight from Cuenca to Guayaquil and planned a new day trip with Wilson. It was a smooth drive from Cuenca and we stopped to eat local fruits and then visited a beautiful cacao farm where we sampled cacao nibs and ground our own pure chocolate! We ate as the locals did and experienced Cuenca, Cajas, and drove through the country. Truly a great time!
Louis showed us the beautiful views of the Caja National Park, guided us through an alternative beautiful route and told us everything about Ecuador! We really enjoyed the tour!
We had an excellent trip to El Cajas national park. Wilson is a top-notch guide, personable and very knowledgeable. He identified for us every bird and unusual plant that we came across (or took an interest in). We hiked around one lake, Llaviucu, which is (relatively) low-lying for El Cajas; drove up to the high-altitude lookout point that's also the watershed between the Atlantic and Pacific; and then went on another hike, also high-altitude, around Lake Toreadora, some smaller lakes, and a 600-year-old forest. We really enjoyed both hikes. The landscape and 'feel' was very different in each. The tour wound up with a late lunch -- we chose potato soup and local trout -- at a nearby restaurant. We left at 8:30 am and were back in Cuenca a little after 3 pm. Highly recommended.
This trip was amazing. Our guide Pedro spoke perfect English and was very attentive all the time. The national park had beautiful landscapes and Pedro provided us with a lot of info about the flora and fauna of this park. We had lunch in a very nice restaurant and the food was delicious. This is a tour that I highly recommend and I would definitely come back if I had the opportunity.
Our guide, Wilson, was fabulous! He was very friendly and knowledgeable. He knew so much about the park, plants and birds! Highly recommend this trip :)
Book this tour for Cajas National Park - our guide Andres was absolutely phenomenal. There was no question he couldn't answer be it about the city of Cuenca, the plants and animals in Cajas, Ecuadorian food, you name it. He was wonderful and we got so much more out of going to the park with him than if we had gone ourselves. Transportation was arranged for us and very comfortable and lunch on the tour was delicious. Andres made this the easiest and most enjoyable day of our trip and even gave us recommendations for the rest of our stay. We were lucky enough that he was able to help us spot a wild toucan! The tour was 1000% worth it!
Cuenca Bestours is amazing. As well as hiking in Cajas National Park, we biked in the town of Cuenca, went horseback riding, tours parts of the town of Cuenca and so much more. Our guide Wilson Galarza was so organized and knowledgeable and fun, and owner Javier was also first rate. I felt totally safe and cared for at all times.
My friend and I had a fantastic day with Andres today. He picked us up at our bnb and then we went to el cajas. He was so knowledgeable about the area. He pointed out many amazing birds, plants, flowers, all while explaining the importance of the region. His genuine love of the area was infectious. So glad we chose to go with him.
The trip was amazing with spectacular landscapes and Wilson, our guide was extremely knowledgeable and pleasant. We would definitely book another tour.
Excellent trip into the national park. Hike and views were spectacular. Our guide Wilson was truly professional and so knowledgeable. Very exceptional service all around.
Flavia was very professional and knowledgeable!! She answered every question that I peppered her with, I am a curious person and asked copious amounts of questions about flora etc. The two hikes were great, we especially loved the higher altitude hike even though my lungs did not like it. We enjoyed being with Flavia and invited her to Canada to stay with us, she is a great tour guide and a great person and we loved the Andean Highlands!!!
Cuenca was a highlight of my Ecuador trip, in large part due to Cuenca Bestours and their guide Luis. They created a custom 2 day itinerary that strung together four of their half day and one day tours- Cajas, the city and Ingapirca. I saw a ton in a short period with a knowledgeable, passionate and sociable guide- highly recommended! As many tourists had cancelled coming to Ecuador due to foreign news ( dont believe any of it! Super safe and esp Cuenca is affluent, clean, beautiful and safe)… my tour ended up being a private. CuencaBestours gave me a cery reasonable rate and Luis was a great guide. He grew up near Ingapirca, so if you go on that tour you will see his family’s region. Cajas was a higjlight- it reminded me of iceland- treeless but green and beautiful. Recommended!
Great tour Sebastian was an excellent guide very knowledgeable and helpful. The park is beautiful, had some problems going up hill at that altitude but took our time
Cajas is one of the most amazing places in all of Ecuador. I have visited several times, but nothing compares to visiting with a guide. Wilson took our small group to three locations including a wonderful vegan lunch. His English is impeccable and he knew so much about the flora and fauna and history of the area. He was also a very good driver and had a comfortable car.
Our tour to Cajas National Park was quite simply amazing. The landscapes were stunning and the flora and fauna were fascinating. Our guide Pedro really made the tour, he is knowledgeable and kind, he made sure everyone got the most out of the tour. I would definitely do other tours with him as he greatly enhanced our appreciation for the natural and human history of Ecuador.
Great trip around Cajas National Park. The views are gorgeous. The guide Xavier M was knowledgeable and helped us make the most of the rainy weather. Lunch was delicious!
