Itinerary
Knossos, the heart of the Minoan civilization, lies 5 km southeast of Heraklion, in the valley of the river Kairatos. Crete’s most famous historical attraction, he site is considered to be the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on the island and is referred to as the oldest city in Europe. Knossos was first inhabited by a Neolithic settlement in the seventh century BC. It stayed inhabited for several thousands of years until it was finally abandoned in 1375 BC after its destruction, which marked the end of Minoan civilisation. In 1878, the first large-scale excavation was undertaken by the wealthy art-lover Minos Kalokairinos, while Crete was still under Turkish occupation. This was followed by the long-term excavations (1900-1913 and 1922-1930) of Sir Arthur Evans, who uncovered the whole surrounding area of Knossos.
The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the largest and most visited museums in Greece. It is also among the most important museums in Europe. It is home to artefacts from all the periods of Cretan prehistory and history. The exhibitions cover a chronological span of over 5,500 years from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The Minoan collection contains unique examples of Minoan art, many of them true masterpieces. The Archaeological Museum is located in the centre of Heraklion and was built between 1937 and 1940 by the architect Patroklos Karantinos. It was built on a site previously occupied by the Roman Catholic monastery of Saint-Francis which was destroyed by earthquake in 1856. The colors and construction materials used in the building, are similar to certain Minoan wall-paintings.
Rethymno is situated at the northern coast of Crete about in the middle between the two large cities Chania (58 km West) and Heraklion (79 km East). It is the only town on the island, which is built on a cape. There are two sides of Rethymno offering two styles of visit: the endless big beach and the old town with its mix of architecture and history. The large Venetian castle “Fortezza”, which dominates the city, countless orthodox and catholic churches, mosques, the old lighthouse, majestic mansions of Venetian architecture, arches and cobbled paths, which create a magical atmosphere, have inspired thousands of visitors to pause and take a picture.

We had a lovely day with Christine, our guide, and our driver was excellent. The tour guide at Knossos was very knowledgeable.
Our family absolutely loved this tour! From start to finish, it was such a fun, memorable, and special experience. We were especially impressed with the tour company and with Thanos and Christine, who were not only incredibly knowledgeable but also so warm, friendly, and genuinely fun to be around. They made us feel welcome right away and truly went above and beyond to make the experience unforgettable. There were so many wonderful touches throughout the tour, and the variety of snacks and beverages was fantastic. You could really tell how much thought and care went into every detail. I honestly can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed this experience. It was one of those experiences our family will be talking about for a long time. We would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone looking for something fun, authentic, and truly special!
If you want see the sights and have the local knowledge this is a great way to do it. Carlos and Christine were wonderful host. They really gave us an appreciation for the sights but also everyday life on Crete.
Thanos and Christine were amazing! They kept us entertained, were very knowledgeable about the local history, and were able to answer all our questions (especially about olive oil!). Thanos was a great driver and Christine showed us around all the good spots in Rethymno.
Fantastic day trip to Knossos, museum and Rethymno. Christine and Thanassis were excellent guides. They were informative, knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. The ride to Knossos was long, but very comfortable and scenic. Boxed lunch was very good and they were always providing us with cold water and drinks. Thanks for a great day. I would highly recommend this tour!
This tour was truly one of the highlights of our trip to Crete. From my very first message to Christine, while I was still planning everything from Mexico, she was incredibly kind and helpful. She provided detailed information, researched other tours for us and shared many thoughtful recommendations. On the day of the tour, Christine and our driver, Thanos, were wonderful. Throughout the journey, they told us fascinating stories about Crete and the region. They also made a special effort to engage my daughter and make the experience enjoyable for her, which was a detail I deeply appreciated. At Knossos, they arranged for us to have a Spanish speaking guide named Maria, who was simply exceptional. She was knowledgeable, engaging and brought the history of Knossos to life in a way that made our visit truly memorable. On the way back, Christine took us through beautiful Rethymno and even spent some time teaching us a little Greek, which was such a fun and personal touch. Everything was perfectly organized and right on time. They also provided snacks and drinks throughout the day. More than just a tour, it felt like spending the day discovering Crete with thoughtful and knowledgeable local friends. An absolutely wonderful experience from beginning to end. 10 out of 10. I could not recommend Christine, Thanos, Maria and SeaByBus Explore Crete more highly!
Christine and Thanos were wonderful hosts! They kept us entertained on the way to Heraklion. We learned about the history and culture of Crete and a little bit of the Greek language. The museum and palace are very impressive and worth visiting!
Tour very well organized. Christine was a great guide, telling us a lot about Crete on the long drive embellished by slides and videos and answering our questions. The van was comfortable; the driver was friendly and professional and kept us stocked with cold waters. Providing good snack boxes was such a good way to maximize our time to see the sights and visit the most attractions on our time limited shore excursion. Would definitely use again.
We had an amazing private tour to Knossos Palace from Chania, and it was one of the best experiences of our trip to Crete. Christine was a fantastic guide! She is very knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the history of Knossos and Crete. We learned so much and never felt rushed, and she was happy to answer all of our questions. Our driver Thanos was incredibly kind, professional, and made the long drive comfortable and stress-free. We felt well taken care of from the moment we were picked up until we returned to Chania. If you're thinking about visiting Knossos from Chania, I highly recommend this private tour. Having Christine and Thanos made all the difference! They were a wonderful team, and they helped make our day truly memorable. We would definitely do it again!
I highly recommend a tour with Thanos and Christine. We learned so much about Crete culture and history and Minoan civilization. The ride to Heraklion from Chania was very comfortable as Christine shared with us about customs and traditions and food of Cretans. Most importantly, she was very receptive with all the questions. Thanks Christine and Thanos for a memorable tour.
Booked this private bus tour for my family and it was simply amazing. The driver and guide, Thanos and Christine, were very kind, polite and friendly. They took care of us all day and made sure We were comfortable the entire trip. The tour allowed us to see the ruins of Knossos, Museum, town of Rethymno and a local Oil factory. Everything was worth to be seen. Can only recommend this tour operator and his team.
Christine & her team blew this tour out of the park for us! We enjoyed learning all about Chania & Crete. The private tour through Knossos was a huge plus & enjoyable, I’m glad we set up the agenda to go there before the museum because the history was so helpful! We opted to go on an olive oil mill tour and it was so interesting to taste & learn more about the process! This team was so easy & flexible to work with and after the tour Christine gave us delicious local spots near our hotel to try. If we visit Chania again, we will be using SeaByBus again!
Our private tour to Knossos was one of the highlights of our trip. Hiring a private guide was absolutely worth it! They brought the history to life with fascinating stories and insights that we never would have gotten on our own. The experience exceeded all of our expectations, and we left with a much deeper appreciation for the site. We also visited Elafonisi Beach with a different tour company. While the beach itself was beautiful, after seeing the quality and service of SeaByBus, I wish we had booked our Elafonisi trip with them instead. Based on our experience, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend SeaByBus for anyone looking for a well-organized and memorable tour in Crete.
Christine and Thanos were excellent guides, we loved learning about Crete and touring Knossos and the Museum. We had a memorable trip, enjoyed our lunch and our time with our guides, and highly recommend this experience.
Well worth the road trip! We experienced history, culture and traditions of Crete. Our guide was very knowledgable and it was nice to have a separate driver so that she could focus on our interests and share information.
Palace of Knossos private tour was fantastic. Our wonderful driver picked us up from the boat port and took us to the site. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and fantastic. I am so glad I went. The company, Chania Private Tours, makes you feel safe and welcomed. One of the best vacation experiences I have ever had. I highly recommend them.
We had an amazing day with Christine and Thanos. Our day was filled with Greek history and culture, and the tour was thoughtfully crafted with breaks along the way. Christine was a wonderful guide, and provided helpful context of Knossos palace, even though we didn’t book a guided tour. Her and Thanos provide welcomed knowledge of Cretan traditions, food, and culture along the way.
Fantastic - Christina and driver were ouatanding
What an amazing experience! Christine worked with us to customize this itinerary based on our needs and interests. She responded promptly and clearly to all communication communications. (email and WhatsApp.). She is unbelievably informative and shared so much history and background with our family. She arranged for an archaeologist tour guide at the Palace of Knosses and arranged for the most unique and delicious lunch experience in Heraklion. They generously provided water and snacks and meal-to-go for our family. The van was very comfortable and had Wi-Fi and a video to visually complement the information she shared. Christine was so wonderful helping to personalize this itinerary, that we worked directly with her on other full day experiences in Crete. We highly recommend Christine and SeaByBus Explore Crete (a family business) for any travel experiences on Crete.
Amazing tour with Christine and Thanos! It's like having new-found family in Chania and in Crete. Visited the Knossos Palace, the Archeological Museum. Christine was very responsive to all my queries in WhatsApp and even gave us recommendations (and helped us made reservations) for nearby restaurants as it was New Year's Eve and restaurants were mostly packed. I would also like to commend the replacement stop in the olive oil factory in lieu of Rethymnon we requested in order for us to see how they produce Cretan olive oil. The "snacks" were very fulfilling and a pleasant surprise as it was more of a meal rather than just a snack! On the way to the Knossos, Christine aslo provided us with much information about Cretan culture, food, music, and dance. Our guide for the tour in Knossos and the archeological museum, Talia, was amazing, enthusiastic and informative, and is someone who truly enjoys what she does. All-in-all an amazing tour. Hopefully we get to come back and join in another one of their tours. Cheers :)
We had a wonderful experience on our private tour of Knossos Palace, the Archeological Museum, and Rethymno city with Christine and our friendly driver. Thanks to Crete’s Winter Sundays, we enjoyed free entrance to both the palace and museum, which made the day even more special. Christine’s in-depth knowledge provided us with a fascinating personal history lesson, and the door-to-door service in the comfortable van was much appreciated. Lunch was amazing, and every part of the tour was enjoyable, making it a truly memorable outing.
The entire experience was wonderful from the communication prior to the trip through droping off back at our accommodations. Our guides were very kind and knowledgeable, telling us all about local customs, traditions and history. The refreshments and lunch were very good and much appreciated! Knossos palace and the museums were fantastic on their own but I am so glad we had a guide to give us inside information we would otherwise have missed. I highly recommend this tour! Thank you for the experience!
Great comfort, knowledgeable guide, informative and well designed tour . Thank you for amazing historical adventure!
Christine and Thanos made this a pleasant and informative experience for the group (6 of us). Their timing to the palace and museum was perfect. They could not have been nicer to spend the day exploring the island and learning about Greek life in Crete. I would recommend the trip most highly!!
A wonderful trip with door to door service which made for a very relaxing experience. Thanos was a great driver and Christina a lovely and personable guide. The trip is well organised and everything ran like clockwork. The vehicle was very comfortable and spacious and the onboard videos were informative. We loved the packed lunch and drinks. A great trip and would thoroughly recommend it.
Highly recommended day trip to see one of the most fantastic places in Crete. For the proce paid we had a fantastic air conditioned vehicle to take us there and back, great guide Christine in the vehicle and a brilliant lunch (which covered Vegan and GF as well as we could have hoped, they had lots of useful advice on finding options for the rest of our trip too). We chose the guided tour of Knossos as well which we would highly recommended as well, it was great to have that additional expertise while going round. The trip to the museum as well was great, all in all a brilliant day. Felt bad when we hit Rethymno because we were all really overwhelmed by the day we'd had. If you're looking to take your family to Knossos, this is the best way to do it.
This was a terrific experience- we were a group of nine and arrived via cruise ship. Christine was prompt and provided outstanding education for our group about Crete. We then had an equally fantastic experience touring the Palace of Knossos and the museum with Thalia. Our entire group agreed that this was one of the best excursions we have ever done through Viator.
This is the best excursion you'll take! Three generations in my family loved this tour, from grandmom down to my teens. Christine and Thanos picked us up at our Chania hotel in an air-conditioned van filled with drinks and snacks. We departed for Knossos Palace and stopped at beautiful vistas like the White Mountains for photos. During the ride, Christine shared details about the island's history, food, customs, music, and people. In between, we saw quick videos to bring the details to life. At Knossos, we had an expert, Thalia, take us around and she was passionate about the archeological site. Knossos existed way before the Acropolis was even imagined! Upon pickup, Christine and Thanos shared a lovely boxed lunch with more cold beverages. We visited the museum next and enjoyed seeing thousands of artifical from the Minoan civilization. We then took a walking tour of the quaint town of Rethymno where Christine navigated us through the maze of streets and showed us some of the village artisans, who carved wooden art in front of our eyes and made phyllo dough in a multi-generation business. We departed for Chania after a long day of exploring and sight seeing. When Thanos learned that my teenage son wanted to go fishing, he went ABOVE AND BEYOND by loaning us his fishing rods and even went so far as to help us get bait and brought it to our hotel the next morning. When I share that Christine and Thanos embody Cretan culture, I highly recommend this excursion for your group. You don't just get to see Crete, you'll get to feel Crete. A+

What a wonderful day! I can’t recommend this tour highly enough - amazing tour guides - Christine, Thanos, and Helene - who were friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and fun to be with. Everything was perfect: from the very comfortable mini bus, the depth and quality of the information, the lunch and refreshments, the company. Knossos and the Heraklion Museum are a must for any visit to Crete, and this tour has it all. We also visited the lovely Rethymnon on the same day!
From the moment Christine and Sotiris met us at the port gate holding a sign with our name, we knew we were in good hands. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and even had a video screen playing helpful clips about Crete and Knossos as we drove—such a thoughtful touch that added context to the day. What really made this tour outstanding was the depth of knowledge shared by both Christine, our guide for the day, and Thalia, our licensed guide at Knossos Palace. Thalia’s vivid and detailed explanations brought the ruins to life—she helped us see what the palace might have looked like, how it was used, and why it was so important. It was so engaging! The Heraklion Archaeological Museum was equally impressive. We got to see iconic pieces like the Gold Bee Pendant, the Phaistos Disc, the Ring of Minos, and the famous Snake Goddesses and Dolphin fresco. Christine’s commentary helped us understand the significance of these artifacts and how they fit into the broader Minoan story. At my wife’s request, we also stopped at a local olive oil factory, which turned out to be fascinating and so enjoyable—another sign of how flexible and accommodating this tour was. We especially loved the drive itself—winding between olive groves, mountains, and glimpses of the sea. The views were spectacular, and Christine made the time between stops fly by with great conversation and insight into Cretan life and history. The entire day was flexible and relaxed, tailored to our interests. We never felt rushed, yet we covered so much. If you’re visiting Crete and want a truly enriching and comfortable experience, this tour is absolutely worth it!
This is a must do tour when in Crete. We had a great day with Thanos and Stavros was a wonderful guide at the Palace of Knossos. Christine was so helpful rearranging dates for us when my husband was sick. I highly recommend booking with Christine and the team,
Our tour of Knossos Palace was an unforgettable experience, made truly special by our wonderful guides, Christine and Thanos. We learned about Minoan history and mythology which brought the ancient ruins to life. Our tour guides warm, caring nature made everyone feel welcome and engaged. The palace itself was breathtaking, and the visit to the museum afterward beautifully tied everything together. A perfect mix of history, storytelling, and hospitality—highly recommended!
One of the best tours we have ever been on. During the car ride our guide Christine and driver were both personable and attentive, providing delicious Cretan food, plenty of drinks and a lot of interesting information. The mini van was very comfortable and honestly we couldn’t have had a better experience. Our guide at Knossos was also amazing and so passionate in sharing her knowledge of the Minoan culture. I would highly recommend taking a tour with SeaByBus. It was a pleasure to have Christine be our guide as her love of Crete and its customs came shining through.
Our private tour for Crete by SeaByBus Explore Crete was phenomenal! Christine our tour guide was great, attentive, informative, and very accommodating! We able to see much of Crete!
Great historical trip with knowledge of Crete, the palace, and so much more! Both the driver and guide were incredibly friendly and had so much passion for the island and history. Learning about the olive tree and the importance of it across the island for families, was a key takeaway, besides the long history of civilization in Crete. We left more knowledgeable and connected to the island!
Knossos palace and Heraklion museum were amazing! Tour guide was wonderful and full of knowledge. Museum had incredible artifacts which considering the age were so well preserved.
I have wanted to visit Knossos for as long as I remember- so wanted to do it in style - and I was not disappointed Christine and driver Thasos were so nice and helpful throughout Christine sorted me with a really wonderful licensed guide for Knossos - Thalia- who really brought the site to life and explained everything with passion and deep understanding The museum was excellent too, having been to the site first And the short stops at Heraklion harbour and Rethymno on the way back rounded things off nicely I cannot recommend this tour highly enough And really appreciated the complimentary gifts of Artesan Olive oil & Raki! Thanks so much Sea by Bus !!
We had a wonderful day. SeaByBus gave us an unforgettable experience ~ and also delicious traditional Cretan snacks on the way ☺️
We had a wonderful tour that gave us good insight into the history and culture of Crete, plus moved us from Chania to Heraklion. The guide Christine and driver Thanos filled the driving time with stories about life, history and climate in Crete and were most accomodating, changing the schedule so we could see as much as possible. Our walks around Rethymono and a small village were great but the highlight was our visit to Knossos Palace. Our guide there, Thalia, was one of the most passionate and knowledgeable guides I have ever encountered. She brought history alive through out the palace site. It was our choice to visit the museum on our own the following day - it was also well worth the time. The box lunch was a great idea that kept us on track.
Our family enjoyed the day trip to Heraklion. Our guide was extremely informative and made the day very pleasant. The snacks provided were very tasty. My kids loved the local soda. We stopped at a cave on the ride home at the request of my kids. Overall it was a great day and I would highly recommend if you are looking for a private tour.
Had a great day with our guides Thanos and Christie. We were able to get a guided tour of the Knossos Palace, which I recommend. Our docent is an active archeologist who was able to provide great insight into the area. This made the trip even better. We were a small group so we had an opportunity to talk to our guides about life in Crete, which added to the experience.
My fiancee and I had an amazing time on this Knossos Palace, Museum & Rethymno city Private Tour. The private transfer ride from Chania to Knossos was great, as Christine provided an informative presentation of Crete, accompanied by a delightful snack box of local Cretan foods. The tour of Knossos Palace and Museum was exceptional, with the guide Thalia being super informative and enthralling us with tales of the ancient Minoan civilization. Overall, we had a superb time and would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Chania!
Wonderful trip to Knossos with personalized side trips to suit our interests in modern Greek history and WWII. Christina and Thanos were warm and caring hosts, offering helpful information and special treats throughout our day together. Highly recommend!
This is a must when visiting Crete! All our guides were knowledgeable, accommodating, and enthusiastic. We appreciated all three of them, Thalia, Christine, and our driver. Excellent tour.
Our driver, Thanos, and tour guides Christine, and Thalia at Knossos, were all amazing and accommodating. We had an on-time pickup at our hotel in Chania. Smooth drive with videos and good conversation to Knossos. The tour there was wonderful. I’m a history buff but the private tour and passion about the subject also got my mom and wife excited to learn more about the ancient Minoan civilization. It pairs very well with the museum in Heraklion immediately after. They provide a nice boxed lunch that was surprisingly tasty and unique to Crete. We also stopped in Rethymno shortly and made a second stop in Rethymno, per our request, to see their local University. We made it back a bit early, which was great for us. Very comfortable and well worth the money for the private experience.
Awesome experience, worth every penny spent. Highly recommend taking this private tour. Crete is beautiful and amazing; the cultural, the history and mythology. In addition you learn a few words in Greek to enhance your trip.
Six of us friends took the trip to the Knossos ruins and the associated museum. Christine and the driver were fabulous. They picked us up at the villa we were staying at in Chania and transported us safely to the sites. Christine was very informative about the history of Crete during the drive. At the Knossos site, we were met by a very informative archeologist that provided extensive detail about the history of the Minoan people and the Knossos site itself. On the way back, Christine arranged for an impromptu fun and informative olive oil tasting at a local olive oil factory. Overall we had a great experience and would highly recommend Christine and the SeabyBus for this experience.
Best trip and provider of our 3 month holiday!! SeaByBus is wonderful-great driver, excellent guide and they go above and beyond to make the trip amazing and comfortable. We even did another one with them the next day. Highly recommend.
