A fantastic attraction and well worth visiting while in Crete. Beautifully presented, with an impressive variety of marine life. The tanks are well maintained, and the displays provide an interesting insight into the underwater world. Sharks, rays and colourful fish up close is a real highlight. It does get fairly busy, although we didn't struggle too much. You only need about an hour here, but on a rainy day it was a nice thing to do.

Visted the aquarium recently, it was a rainy day and we booked our tickets online and managed to skip the queues. My only gripe, far too many people in there, people not looking where they are going, especially when you are sitting in a wheelchair. However, it was very good and interesting to see all the different fish.
We had a wonderful time visiting the Cretaquarium with our kids (aged 8 and 10). It is beautiful, exceptionally well-maintained, and offers an amazing variety of marine life, including sharks, sea turtles, and very unique fish that fascinated the children. Another major highlight was the VR experience, which we highly recommend not missing! On top of that, the staff was incredibly nice, polite, and helpful throughout our visit. The only downside was the ticketing system. We had to wait in line outside for over an hour in the drizzling rain with the kids, as there is currently no option to buy skip-the-line tickets in advance. Despite the long wait, it is absolutely worth a visit—just make sure to check the weather or arrive early to beat the crowds!
What a wonderful place this is it’s big clean and full of wonderful fish. It’s made our stay which we were not enjoying far more enjoyable. Admission fee was good we took about and hour going round but you can easily take longer reading all the information. We chose not to do a guide but these are available. There was a small queue to get in but not at all crowded. Staff could speak excipient English and were lovely both the lady in the ticket desk and in the shop. Perfect for any age. Lovely and cool inside so a nice break if the weather is super hot
What an experience! Loved it here, definitely worth the money! No wait time as we prepaid for tickets and visited during the week, however expect a small queue during busy periods. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable on our many random questions and the aquarium was well kept and maintained Me and my partner had an amazing time seeing all the fish and reading everything there was about them. My favourite was the jellyfish! Definitely a great place to visit with kids, as a couple, for dates, or something different. We spent over 2 hours just enjoying our time and look forward to coming back in the future.
Great atmosphere Highly recommended Amazing variety of sea creatures and corals
Had no waiting line when we arrived, free parking. We had a great time watching all the fish and the special species they have (a lot). In addition there was a tank showing the time of different material to decompose in the sea. In total - we had a great time and a fun date.
What a lovely place. Opens at 9.30 ish. Costs 15 euros. Definitely gets very busy especially in school holidays Lots of wonderful exhibits and if you bother to take the time to read the information about the fish and mammals then you may even learn something There’s a nice little gift shop and cafe too. It’s about 3 miles from the Gouves center and there are few decent paths. Can recommend a visit
Lovely aquarium with a decent array of species and was fantastic for our 2 young children they had an amazing time. Only thing I would say knocks it a bit, there’s a lack of vibrant colourful fish on display and it feels like there are quite a few repeat tanks. Very disability friendly, very kid friendly, tanks at varying heights and lots of rest spaces/toilets.
So enjoyed this little visit when staying near Heraklion. There is ramp access available and everything is very mobility friendly. Very child friendly. Shark tanks and jelly fish are most impressive areas. It doesn't have wall through overhead tunnels like some other top aquariums but it gives a great experience.
Ok variety of marine life, mostly native to greece with some tropical tanks of various sizes. The main viewing tank is poorly designed as shown by all the scratched noses of all the sharks bumipng into the tank walls. Its an older aquarium and definitely needs to be refurbished. Cafeteria for some snacks and light food so no need to bring anything. Most of the local travel agencies offer trips, bus + ticket, i payed 22 €. Not far from Hersonissos, so its an ok place to spend a couple of hours.
We went here on a colder day in April. We weren’t alone. The line for a ticket took about 45 minutes. When you buy a ticket online you can skip the line. The aquaria were interesting and the kids were entertained for a good hour. I would not drive more than an hour for this
Rainy day so went to kill some time, queued in the rain to get in was longer than we were in the actual aquarium. They seemed to just let everyone in at once rather than staggering people, it was so crowded in the aquarium, people pushing to see the fish. Over all quite disappointed, for what I read was one of Europe’s biggest aquariums, it was small compared to others I’ve been to. Good if you’re looking to kill an hour.
Very busy on a rainy day. We arrived at 3.30 and the queue was across to the car park. My daughter who has ASD, myself (5 months pregnant) and my husband stood in the queue in the rain for 45 minutes then when finally reaching the main door we were welcomed with a sign saying people who are pregnant, have disabilities etc can skip the queue 🫠 worth noting before visiting! You can also skip the queue if you buy your tickets online. The aquarium itself was crowded and overwhelming for my daughter, it was a struggle to get a space in the tank windows for her to see, when you did you felt rushed to let the next person in because of how busy it was. Would be much better on a quieter day or if they held some ASD friendly sessions.
really nice aquarium - great for kids and adults alike. It is located a little bit outside of Heraklion - so rent a car although the intercity bus works just fine. Note - there is about a 15mins walk from the bus stop to the Aquarium - but its worth it. Great idea when its not a great day for touring.
Really fun and very detailed. next or near every water tank you would find information about the fish and differen species there. i think we spent around 2 hours looking at all the different fishes there. My wife and I really enjoyed it. Seriously reccomended. They also have a restaurant where you can eat lunch after looking at all the beautiful creatures there.
Went here on a family day. Two teenagers and a baby. Children under 4 go free. Really lovely aquarium which is well thought out. Staff were friendly and helpful. I really liked the interactive signs next to the tanks where you can learn more about the fish in the tanks. A few tanks were empty at the beginning. Taxi rank right outside and parking if you drive. There is also a restaurant / cafe at the aquarium. Really nice food and staff here were also very kind and helpful. A bit odd that they didn’t have highchairs. One negative was the toilets, which need modernising. Overall a lovely way to spend a few hours with the family.
Very cheap (€8 pp) for a couple of hours of rainy day fun. A small aquarium but with good exhibits, including a couple of excellent big tanks. Cafe is also good, though shop disappointing. We went in Nov and it was very quiet.
2nd time of visiting. Although I love seeing all the creatures I think they should be out at sea. The fee wasn’t as bad as I remembered but we chose not to do the virtual reality. It took around 2 hours for the visit it wasn’t busy, so you could walk around freely. The children you could hear were so excited. All the staff seemed happy and helpful. My favourites were the jellyfish, turtle and seahorses.
We went to the aquarium at 10:15 and it was still very quiet. We had a lovely time wondering around and it took us about an hour or so to see everything. We took a taxi as it would be a 10-15 minute walk from the bus stop. Not much else around the area though other than the dinosaur land. The carpark was pretty big and other possible places to park.
Fantastic quality aquarium, was very pleasantly surprised. Staff were friendly. Visited with wife and 5 year old son and he was engaged the whole time. We didn’t eat but there was a little cafe where the sandwiches looked very nice. We spent a little over an hour but cloud have taken longer as there was plenty of information to read, however requires an attention span longer than a 5yo. When then done the do o park straight after very comfortable and convenient to do them both in the same day. If I’m ever back in Crete I’ll be sure to pay another visit.
Great value for money, far more in the aquarium than expected, the VR was worth doing (over 12s only) Great way to kill time before flying out or on a cloudy day.
Is the best aquarium we have cisit so far, i recomend it! We where staying in Rethymno and rent a car and in one haiur we get here, all good. Must see if you came in Creta
We visited Cretaquarium after coming 2yrs ago on our Honeymoon & we loved it just as much as the 1st time. I now have to use a Powerchair due to my mobility & i got free admission along with my husband who was with me. Wheelchair access is excellent & I could enjoy the whole place easily. So many different species of fish, sea creatures & sharks. Really interesting place to visit for all ages. Highly recommend 😊😊
Fascinating visit with plenty of unusual and attractive creatures. Well organised and laid out. Near to a nice beach too!
We visited the Cretaquarium with our whole family, including two kids (ages 4 and 8), and they absolutely loved it. It’s very family-friendly, with plenty to see and explore for children and adults alike. I highly recommend it for families looking to get out of the hotel and experience something different from daily hotels routine. A great way to spend a few hours together
Great Experience - enjoyable visit, taking about an hour. Caters well for the English. Nice restaurant nearby to extend the visit.
This was the best trip the aquarium is full of information, it's is value for money I'd give this a 100% not just 5/5 , my husband and I loved it, it is well worth a visit for all the family of all ages they have a wide selection of fish and they are all so healthy, as an aquarium hobbyist I was in awh of every tank ,
It was great value for money , my son really enjoyed it . The tour was well laid out , there were toilets every hundred feet or so . The Gift shop and cafe were great too
Not expensive, clean and well maintained There are some lovely ideas for viewing areas and large windows around a central tank that was well lit so you can see all of the various creatures/fish in the tank. There is a VR experience, but you have to be prepared to wait up to 30 minutes for it Considering the whole visit took us about 90 minutes to see everything (we walked slowly) that is a long wait. However, it is worth a visit if you have some spare time
A lovely day out for the family, if you have an interest or are just curious in marine life then you would really appreciate it. Been to a few sea life aquariums in various countries and this one had some unique marine life and a niche turtle eggs animation. Toilets on site were adequate. Cafe was was good with enough options for a short visit. Strangely there were no CretAquarium themed souvenirs in the shop, just random marine life themed products. Don’t forget to walk to the nearby beach for a quick splash - small area but it wasn’t busy.
Cretaquarium was decent overall. It’s not as large as the descriptions might suggest, but the marine life on display is genuinely interesting. There are multilingual info panels, though unfortunately not in Ukrainian. One particular language choice felt out of place, but that’s a separate story. Facilities are good — there’s a toilet, a souvenir shop at the exit, a café, and working Wi-Fi. That makes the visit more comfortable, especially for families. The downsides: ticket prices feel too high for what’s essentially a short visit. Also, the lighting inside makes photography difficult — you often have to search for an angle to avoid glare on the glass. If you’re nearby and have an hour to spare, it’s worth a look. But we wouldn’t recommend going out of your way just for this.
The Cretaquarium is a wonderful place to visit for the whole family. It’s fully air-conditioned, making it a perfect escape from the summer heat. The aquarium features a wide variety of fish and marine creatures, beautifully displayed in spacious tanks. Informative explanations are available in English, which makes the experience both fun and educational. A visit usually takes about an hour and a half, giving you enough time to enjoy the exhibits without feeling rushed. Overall, it’s an enjoyable and relaxing activity for all ages.
Lovely day out with the whole family for kids and adults aged between 4 and 65. Great Value lots to see for the price. Parking on site and also a lovely restaurant where we stopped for lunch after.
Very nice aquarium with lots of different fish, enjoyed it even as an adult. There was lot of kids which were quite noisy but nothing too bad. Texts in both English and Greek, saw sharks, murrays, turtles, octopus, crabs - loved it. The fish tanks are big and the fish seem in good condition. It's wheelchair accessible and there 's also restaurant in the aquarium. Aviable by bus or by foot (went there from Kokkini Hani)
Great aquarium really good value plenty to see including sharks turtles and an octopus would really recommend nice shop too and several cafes
Having bought the tickets beforehand through trip advisor entry was nice and easy, skipped the queues. The aquarium itself is amazing, very big and nicely laid out. Plenty to see, from the cool sharks and turtles to the stunning light show by the jellyfish. The aquarium itself is 5/5 and amazing value for money. Sadly the cafe after was very disappointing, we both had a baguette but the bread was so hard you could of used it as a weapon. Plenty of staff but they didn't seem to know what they were doing. No plates given for the baguettes or cake and takeaway cups for drinks even though we were sat inside in main bit of cafe, very disappointing. Definitely go to the aquarium, just maybe skip the cafe.
Great couple of hours visit. Teens enjoyed it. The onsite restaurant was amazing. Worth a morning or afternoon visit, very affordable.
We visited here during our recent holiday in Crete, and it was a lovely way to spend a few hours. The aquarium isn’t huge, but it’s really well laid out and easy to get around. The tanks are beautifully maintained, and there’s a nice variety of sea life — from jellyfish and seahorses to sharks, rays, and sea turtles. We found it to be clean, air-conditioned, and a welcome break from the midday sun. Our children really enjoyed watching the larger tanks — they could’ve stood there for ages! There’s also a café and a small gift shop on-site. We were also pleasantly surprised by the admission prices — very reasonable, especially when you compare it to what you’d pay for a similar aquarium visit back in the UK. It’s not a full-day attraction, but for a couple of hours, it’s ideal — particularly if you’re staying nearby
This was an amazing visit for me & my niece, we loved every second of this aquarium seeing all different types & sizes of fishes swimming around & also seeing what gets pulled out of the sea & ocean (shocking) ... overall world definitely recommend visiting. Staff were very helpful & polite, weather was lovely, gift shop had a nice bit to offer as well & the cafe was lovely filled with fresh produce! Would go back on next visit to Gouves.
We visited the aquarium on a rainy day in Crete, it was a good activity for a rainy day but get there early! We arrived just after 10am and queued for about 10mins to get in. When we left the place around 11.30am the queue was all the way down the steps to get in and if it’s raining there is no cover same if it’s hot. However if you need the toilet try and keep your legs crossed as the toilets were disgusting unsanitary and filthy. But once inside the aquarium the tanks were well kept and nice informative what’s in each tank
The approach to the aquarium through a semi-derelict area that looked like an abandoned barracks didn’t fill us with much hope. But the aquarium itself was fantastic! Impressive well-lit tanks with plenty of fish but not overcrowded. We were a little concerned about the size of the octopus’s tank, but having spoken to them afterwards, they explained that they moved him from tank to tank for variety and he preferred a smaller tank as it made him feel more secure. Similarly, the green turtle is not resident for life but is replaced regularly. The current resident is back for her third visit, receiving medical treatment. Excellent explanations from the staff who really care deeply for their charges.
We got a taxi from our hotel Mitsis Royal Mare to the aquarium which was easy and 20EUROS. We went in the morning on a cloudy day which was great as the morning avoided the crowds. It’s so lovely here my 13 year old and 6 year old loved it. The staff were really helpful and friendly. We then asked about what to do afterwards and the cafe staff recommended a walk to Gouves Marina which took 10 minutes. There are places to eat here and a sandy beach. We then got the train (which is driven on the road) back to the aquarium and got a taxi back to the hotel from the taxi rank outside. So easy and lots of fun for a cloudy day!
Went on a sightseeing trip to this place whilst on holiday in Crete. Mid-size aquarium but had a lot of different species of beautiful sea animals. Also noticed a sign which said this aquarium was the only one in the world adapted for people with colour blindness which I think is a fantastic USP for this place. The place was very clean especially the fish tanks and staff very polite and helpful. My daughters had the virtual reality experience which they said was also very good. All in all, a great day out exploring the lovely town of Crete.
We arrived at the aquarium, lots of parking for our hire car. We arrived early, after 11am before 2pm please expect queues. We queued for 20mins and there were good facilities and cafe selling delicious snacks. Entrance price was good value and we also bought the audio tour (1 handset was 3Euro). Family of 4 with 2 children aged 6 &10 The space was well maintained, the audio tour was helpful and easy to use to find additional information on the tanks or specific fish, the screens also helped with information. We all have different learning styles the 6yr old liked the audio the 10yr old liked the interactive screens. Seating areas near each tank to take it all in. We loved watching the shark tank being cleaned… and the sea turtle fascinating to watch. It was busy but we didn’t feel rushed and took our time. We all enjoyed our time about 2 1/2hours inside.
Nice for an hour, little old. VR experience is worth the little extra price. We don’t recommend the bar and the toilets….
I throughly enjoyed all 60 viewing live experience of the aquarium. There's much to see plus coral. Plenty of seating areas on the ledges of the huge window views and other seating areas to ponder and appreciate them. Have opportunities to take photos without a flash. Take the time to sit by the the jelly fish and do a selfie and video. The place is spacious and clean. You can show up and visit rather than online. Shops to purchase goodies. They have a lovely restaurant called Cibus Greek Cuisine by Siganos on the premises. Amazing food and great custom.
Good as far as aquariums go. It's not too big and I was hopping that there would be more "learning"-- more information on the local creatures around Crete and some interactive models. It was good for about an hour visit.
The aquarium was perfectly nice and quite good value, but there was an octopus in a tiny tiny tank on its own. My understanding is that octopus are intelligent and social creatures. 😢
What an amazing place!! Nearly cried a few times at seeing such remarkable creatures, it was the turtle that got me! Magnificent! Very informative place, excellent was of getting some shade for a few hours. Fantastic variety of sealife! Very relaxing music all the way around (Enya) , was such a calming place.
