We had a great food tour with Andonis. We were lucky enough to have a private tour since we were the only couple who signed up that morning. Besides learning about all the delicious and interesting foods of Chania he taught us about different aspects of the city. We learned not only the history, but also the architecture and life in modern day Chania. I highly recommend this tour and hopefully you will be lucky enough to enjoy Andonis!

Itinerary
Follow this laid-back walking tour of Chania and find what makes Crete’s cultural capital so marvelous. Explore with us some of the Old Town’s best sights, and visit a mix of famous spots, historic haunts, and hidden gems while discovering the lesser-known Ottoman and Jewish quarters. Get ready to experience Chania with all your senses! We’ll begin your Chania tour at the Dimotiki Agora (Municipal Market), which denotes the boundary between the old and new town. Established in 1913, the year of Crete’s unification with Greece, the Agora hosts more than 70 family-owned businesses selling mostly local groceries and products. Sample local delicacies while exploring the market and find out why Crete is home to one of the healthiest diets in the world.
After fulfilling your taste buds, we’ll stroll around the old town district by passing through its maze of hidden back streets and narrow laneways, visiting Venetian and Ottoman monuments, and discovering doors to secret gardens! Hear stories, myths, and legends about kings, sailors, merchants, heroes, lovers, and artists. Figure out how this city has been a crossroad between the West and East for centuries! Next, you’ll have the unique chance to see local craftsmen producing their handmade products. Hear their stories — and possibly test your skills! Continuing your tour, meander through the old Jewish and Ottoman neighbourhoods and learn how multiculturalism has changed locals’ life through the centuries.
Finally, after walking along the historic harbour’s promenade, you’ll relax your muscles in a local-favourite spot where you’ll enjoy an enticing table with Cretan mezedes (local tapas). Our tour will come to an end either here where it’s the perfect place to continue your own exploration through the city, or we could take you back to the starting point. Before we part ways, don’t forget to ask your local guide for more hints and tips on how to get the best of your trip to amazing Chania.
Splantzia is one of the most unique neighborhoods in Chania city. It is located on the south of the eastern part of the Old Venetian Harbour. This beautiful neighborhood is one of the “hidden treasures” of Chania city, which is known only to the locals and the well-informed travelers. Here you will sample local tapas and wine!

George was delightful and amazing! We had the most excellent time navigating Chania and eating local food. We would absolutely do this again next time we're in Crete and would recommend others to do the same.
An incredible tour with a true friend in Chania! Booking a tour with George was the absolute highlight of our trip. He didn't just feel like a guide—he treated us like long-time friends from the very start. The sightseeing was fantastic, taking us through stunning spots and hidden gems, and the food tasting was simply delicious, introducing us to authentic Cretan flavors. Everything was perfectly organized, warm, and filled with great conversation. Thank you, George, for an unforgettable experience! We can't wait to come back.
My sister and I took the English speaking half day history and food tour with Giannis. He was very knowledgeable about the history of his city. We learned a lot about the culture and how it has evolved throughout the centuries. The food was amazing as well as the coffee and wine. The scenic views of the ancient port are amazing. Highly recommend.

We had a wonderful 4 hour trip through the old town section of Chania. Our guide was Yia. He was so knowledgeable about all the history of Chania and the island of Crete. We sampled Cretan specialties at the various stops, and finished with a delicious lunch! Make sure you skip breakfast when going on this tour ( we started at 9:30 am).
Very fun time. George was a great guide with helpful suggestions.
Ionnis was an excellent guide. He knows the history of the old town, but made it relevant for today. He's very personable and put us at ease very quickly. The food was truly amazing, wish we could have eaten more of it. Everyone has been very hospitable on our tours. Highly recommend.
George was a great guide, his knowledge and passion of Crete was wonderful. Very good tour if you want to learn about the local cuisine. The food tastings were all excellent especially finishing with an amazing traditional lunch. Allow plenty of time as George does not rush this tour and will definitely overrun.
The tour was great! George led us through the old town and new areas of chania where we visited several small businesses and tried authentic Cretan foods and Lear ed about their history and uniqueness. He also arranged a wonderful lunch created for us in a private patio under an olive tree. We loved that we saw off the beaten path areas of the city instead of the touristy spots. I highly recommend this tour.
Wonderful tour. Delicious bites and interesting commentary on Cretan culture and history. Would recommend to anybody on their first visit to Chania.
We had a fantastic tour with George who took us all around the new part of the city as well as the old town. We tried some amazing food and learned a lot about this beautiful place. We can’t wait to plan a return visit and would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is lucky enough to be in the area.
What a wonderful delicious and informative tour. George, our tour guide, made this a memorable and exciting day! His passion for the food and history of Crete was contagious. We learned alot about the foods of Crete as we sampled items from many places throughout the area. By the end of the tour we felt not only had we sampled new foods and learned some new history but we also made a new friend! We highly recommend this tour and George!
I had such an incredible tour with George… He really is the best tour guide and was very knowledgeable. He made the tour memorable and I highly recommend it!
This excurision was booked by a company called Journee who my friend and myself booked our holiday through. George was fantastic! Very knowledgeable, made sure we were comfortable and answered any questions we had on the city and around the area. The food was great, I loved hearing about Cretan culture and how the food is made. Will definately be back with the family!
Our family recently took the Chania Food Stories tour led by Giannis and had the most wonderful time. Giannis has a deep knowledge of all the history and interwove with his own experiences as well as sharing Cretan and Greek culture knowledge. The best part was that he engaged our three children (ages 8 to 14) throughout the tour making it one of our favorite memories in Greece. Thank you, Giannis!!!!
Incredible experience! George took me to all the best places to get all of the best local snacks and foods. He is very friendly and easy to listen/ talk to, he's very knowledgeable and passionate about Crete. I loved the entire experience and it so worth doing! For sure I wouldn't have managed to find all these foods and drinks by myself. The time went by so quickly! I would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting. Go on an empty stomach, you will not go home hungry 🙂
My wife and I recently took this tour and it was amazing. Our guide (Ιωάννης Σταυρίδης) made this tour! We was professional and knowledgeable about the city and the food. Our guide knew we like soccer and surprised us by taking us to the soccer museum and introducing us to the owner. If you are in Crete, I would recommend this tour! My other recommendation would be not to eat before doing it!
We had a great experience with George! He was very friendly and kind, and shared all about Cretan food and culture. All the food that he exposed us to was delicious, and he knows lots of local shopkeepers. Recommended!!!
Such an amazing way to start our holiday in Crete. We experienced great food but also discovered fabulous places to shop highlighting local artisans. Ioannis is an amazing guide, so knowledgeable and shared the best places with us showcasing local food while sharing the history and culture behind the food that we ate. We would highly recommend this tour and especially Ioannis. We can’t wait to continue to explore this beautiful city and island.
Tour was excellent. Yiannis was incredibly knowledgeable about the rich history and culture of Crete, and he shared everything in a way that was easy to follow and genuinely engaging. The walking route included several local stops where we sampled small traditional Cretan foods, which added a great touch. He’s very down‑to‑earth and made the entire experience enjoyable. I would absolutely book this tour again.
Book this tour!! We were paired with George who was incredible! He shared so much information about Crete and the local cuisine. We revisited a few of the places and repeated some of the meals we tasted on this tour. I would book this tour again
The walking food tour in Chania was the highlight of our trip! Truly our favorite activity of all the things we did in Greece. The food was incredible and our tour guide, Yiannis, was so nice and very knowledgeable of the area. We ended up having a private tour and learned a lot about Greek culture and the history of Chania. Absolutely recommend this tour!
We had a fantastic time on the Chania Food Tour with George. He took us to wonderful family-run restaurants serving authentic local food and shared fascinating information about the dishes, their origins, and the history of Chania along the way. The tour felt relaxed and personal—more like exploring the city and enjoying great food with a friend than being on a guided tour. We discovered places we would never have found ourselves and thoroughly enjoyed every stop. Highly recommended!
We just had the most incredible morning with George on the Chania Food Stories Tour. We literally ate our way through Chania tasting such Cretan delicacies as bougatsa, kalitsounia, local cheeses and drinks, and then topped it all off with a delicious lunch. Not only were we well fed, but we learned about the significance of Chania and elements of the Cretan culture that make it so unique and special. It was a feast for our bodies and souls and we enjoyed it immensely. George was knowledgeable and personable and we felt as though we were spending our vacation with a cherished friend. Thank you for an amazing experience!
My Wife and I had the pleasure of doing a food tour in Chania with George as our guide. It was an amazing experience getting to eat with a very informational local who spoke great English. His answers filled in a lot of blanks for me and he definitely knew a lot about olives and delicious olive oil. The group size was great and allowed for a lot of questions. The locations were very authentic and it got us away from the typical tourist trap.
We most enjoyed walking through Chania in the company of George Skevakis, who is an excellent raconteur with a great sense of humor. He was happy to answer our questions and had a wealth of stories to tell. We are grateful for the introduction to delicious Cretan food. We liked it so much that we returned to two of the restaurants included on the tour by ourselves a few days later.
Yanis was great! He brought the history and food culture of Chania alive involving everyone on the tour.
Great Chania Food and Fun with a great tour guide named George! Very knowledgeable and personable and we learned so much about Chania and Crete and truly enjoyed Cretan food and traditions!
An incredible food tour in Chania. It was a wonderful experience with amazing local food, great stories, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Everything was perfectly organized, and it truly gave an authentic taste of Crete. I can wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Chania—an absolute highlight of our trip.
An excellent half day tour with a very knowledgable, humorous and fun guide Ianiss. It was the perfect balance of seeing the sites, learning the history, tasting local food and drink and walking to discover some off the beaten tourist track places to eat and drink. Iannis is a local who has grown up in Chania and is a font of information about the history and culture of the town, and of Crete. A very relaxed and informative tour - I would definitely recommend it as a great way to spend a morning and to get to know the city. The food tastings and coffee are excellent.

We had a wonderful experience with our tour guide George. He took us to the historic areas that we would not have went to on our own. The food was amazing and truly the best tour of our whole trip. When in Chania definitely take this tour.
We had an amazing day in Chania. Great tour guide who gave us the historic tour area along with a wide variety food sample followed by an Authentic Cretan lunch. Highly recommend this tour with George who treated as friend
George was amazing filled with knowledge and interesting facts. His relationships with the local vendors who provided our group with wonderful food from the region the cheese plate was life changing. The tour made we wish I had more time in town and on the island of Crete it was an incredible day
George was the guide for this tour and was amazing. This was 100% worth the price of the tour and George made it amazing.
A wonderful introduction to Chania and Crete! We were well taken care of the whole tour- we ate wonderfully well and learned a little bit of cultural and political history. A real treat- highly recommend!
A great small group experience in Chania with a true "local", Ioannis Stavridis, taking in the sights, smells and tastes.
George was an excellent tour guide. I chose this food tour specifically because it included stories. I learned a lot from George on the tour. He combined food options in the “new” city and the old city. We also walked the old city and the port which has lovely, picturesque buildings and narrow alleys. We had lunch at a local restaurant. The food was so good and even though some of the items were the same thing we had in Athens, I generally liked the preparation of dish on Crete better. The pace of the tour was perfect thanks to George. I highly recommend this tour.
Perfect introduction to Chania, combining plenty of food tastings with sightseeing and local history lessons.
A great walking tour. We went to various restaurants and tasted local cuisines. Our guide told us about the foods and store owners gave us more details. We walked around town, given some direction on where to go. Great guide. Very enjoyable tour.
Very nice, interesting and definitively tasty walking tour, taking you to specific places in Chania where you can taste local specialities. While walking through the city, Giannis, our sympatic guide, was given plenty of culinary and historic explanations. We really appreciated this activity and we highly recommend it.
We had a wonderful tour! Ionannis, our tour guide, was super informative and fun. He shared so much insight not only about the food and traditions but also about the history of Crete/Chania. All the food stops were amazing - great food and adorable places. This was our favorite tour of our 12 day trip. Thank you!!
The tour provided us a unique view around the food of Chania and Greece. George was a great guide TY.
Elena was an amazing guide so full of life and laughter we could not praise her enough. The company was also amazing despite changes to our docking plans nothing was too much trouble for them. The tour itself was better than advertised we thought it would be just snacks but there was so much different food and salads that we were pleasently surprised. The tour comprises both history and food tasting and we could not praise it enough if you ever get to chania in crete then book this tour
Excellent walking tour of old chania with our warm, friendly and knowledgeable guide George. I didn't know Crete had so many native cheeses! The food was wonderful and learning a bit more of the history of the town and island was a great start to our trip
Adonis’s food tour was such a great way to kick off our time in Chania! He did an amazing job sharing the history of the Old Town—how the Venetians, Ottomans, Turks, and Greeks all played a part in shaping the culture and the food. It really helped us see how all those influences came together to make Chania so unique. The food was delicious, and Adonis made everything fun and easy to understand. Big thanks for making our first day so memorable! Highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Chania through its flavors and stories. Efharistó, Adonis!
Great tour! Jannis was very knowledgeable and kind as he walked us through the town. It was very hot that day, so we made sure to have water. The sit-down with Jannis in a small quiet courtyard on the final leg of our tour was the best part. We just said like old friends and talked about everything while eating amazing food and drinking wine. His knowledge about Greek history, politics was fascinating, which made it even more engaging; particularly if you also have historical knowledge and can discuss on an equal level. Super fun and would high recommend it.
We always like to learn a little about the main place for our holiday- this time it is Chania in Crete and we chose a walking tour with food tasting for a change and it was a lovely 4 hours ending in lunch with our excellent & friendly guide Andonis. We met at an easy to find location, warmly welcomed and dived straightaway into local delicacies , sweet and savoury and then a visit to a deli to sample cheeses and olives. Meandering through pretty side streets we learnt the importance of 1913 & Venetian architecture - sounds deep but it was fun in the way our guide conveyed it. Adonis helped us to locate key places to visit in the West of Crete and it is clear he loves his Island and his heritage. A well worth it trip money wise and from a getting to grips with Crete too! Don’t hesitate just book.
This was the most incredible experience that we ever had in traveling. Rebecca of Grecian Lux arranged our whole 2 week Greece visit in which we went to Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, & Crete. Grecian Lux and Rebecca were incredible: we would never go back to the Mediterranean without using Grecian Lux. But she went above and beyond with the food tour in Crete. It happened in her Father's house with her brother George as our guide. And Rebecca flew in from Athens to join us for an incredible meal, where we helped chop the vegetables for one course. We had great food and company, home-made wine and Rocki. It was hard to describe how nice it was!
