We were excited to take this food tour based on the reviews. Sadly, the Guide (Erin) was a no-show. Waited 45 minutes before we headed back to our ship. Refund processed, but if we knew in advance, would have booked something else vs wasting a port day.

Itinerary
Cozumel, surrounded by the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, is as much influenced by the Mayan and Spanish roots of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as the cultures and cuisine of the Caribbean. During this small-group food tour, indulge in the island's local fare, where you’re always within arm’s reach of something tasty. Erin was a fantastic tour guide. She explained how the different foods were prepared and the different spices that were used in the dishes. Make sure to go hungry there is a lot of food.
Our tour guide was a no- show! Beyond disappointed. We waited and waited - getting a refund but now we have nothing scheduled.
Erin is a terrific guide. She took us outside the tourist zone into authentic family owned restaurants. We highly recommend this tour!
My partner and I went on this tour Sept 25th and had an amazing time!! The food was fantastic (and plentiful), the market was amazing and what made it the best of all was our guide, Aranza, she was incredible. We learned so much! We have been to Cozumel many times and this was an excitingly unique experience. Book now!!
Make sure you are hungry for this tour as the food is varied and plentiful. We stopped at local, family run shops for truly authentic food. Erin was a wonderful, knowledgeable, personable guide
We booked the CozumelChef food tour independently while visiting Cozumel on a cruise and really enjoyed the experience. Our guide, Erin, was friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to answer questions throughout the tour. She also did a great job taking our family’s dietary needs and preferences into consideration. Our group was just our adult family of four, so the experience felt very personal. We also appreciated having some flexibility in the types of dishes and restaurants we visited based on our tastes. We made several stops and sampled tacos, empanadas, fish, dessert, local drinks, and a variety of sauces and toppings. Each stop provided roughly an appetizer-sized portion, which was a good way to try several different foods without filling up too quickly. Everything we had was fresh, and Erin explained the dishes and sauces, including what flavors to expect and how spicy they were. Something important to know before booking is that this tour takes you into local Cozumel. These are not fancy tourist restaurants near the cruise port. They are locally owned places that many tourists probably would not find or visit on their own, and that was one of the things we liked most about the experience. Transportation between stops was in an air-conditioned van, which was greatly appreciated in the Cozumel heat. For other cruise passengers, getting to the meeting point was easy. We took a taxi from the port for about $10 each way. Since we booked independently rather than through the cruise line, we were initially a little concerned about getting back to the ship on time, but the tour left us with plenty of time afterward. Just be sure to verify whether your ship’s time and Cozumel local time are the same. Overall, this was a fun and easy way to try local Cozumel food, see places we probably would never have found on our own, and experience something beyond the immediate cruise port area. We would definitely recommend it.
This tour was the most authentic and exciting food tour ever! Gerry was incredibly warm, informative, and fun as our guide, and only took us to places that Cozumel locals go, without a tourist in sight. He made us feel safe and well taken care of. The food and drinks were amazing everywhere, delicious and plentiful, and none of our stops were places I would’ve gone to on my own. I would recommend this tour and Gerry to everyone visiting Cozumel!
We really enjoyed this tour and the food was outstanding!!! It was the perfect amount, we were full and content. Trying all of the authentic foods and learning about the history, different types of fruits, vegetables and spices, seeing how tortillas are made, etc. Jerry is very passionate about the authentic Yucatán food and we all had a great time.
Our guide Erin did an amazing job on this tour. She took us to authentic Mexican restaurants in places that a tourist would never find on their own. The food was amazing and the people we met (many owners of the restaurants) were so kind in welcoming. Not only did we tour restaurants but Erin took us to a market where we saw the spices used in cooking as well as fresh meats, fish, vegetables and fruit. Our last stop on this tour (5 or 6 total stops) was a favorite. We visited a bakery where everything was baked in a huge wood fired oven. All of the baked goods looked amazing but tasted even better. TAKE THIS TOUR. Make sure it's with Erin.
We were the only two on the tour, so a private tour! Our guide, Erin, was so informative telling us about all the peppers and spices used in the local dishes. We had some very tasty items but it was a lot of food, by the end we couldn’t eat any more. Overall a great experience
It was excellent. Loved all the food and drinks. It was a really nice variety. The tour guide was wonderful. Highly recommend this.
Erin, our guide, was knowledgeable and was able to change plans quickly when one stop could not accommodate us. Taxi felt like we were in the “Cash Cab” with the disco lights. Added to the experience! Food stops were great and delicious!!!
We had a fantastic time on our tour. Not only was our guide exceptionally knowledgeable about the food culture and history of the area, she readily answered all of our questions about the food, life in Cozumel, local culture, and we had just a great time with her! The food was delicious - we had pork pibil tacos, homemade juices and beverages, empanadas de queso, local chicken soup, pastries and more. Highly recommend!
Erin was super knowledgeable and friendly. Every where we went was family owned, off the tourist strip and not pre planned, as in the owners dont know if the tour is coming or not. So the food was fresh and ordered by us on arrival. All the seafood was amazing. Come hungry as its a lot in a short period of time.
We were lucky enough to get a private tour and had such an amazing time. My partner is super picky and it was not an issue at all. Food was delicious and we learned a ton about the local area and food.
Absolutely exceeded expectations. Best food tour possible.. my partner is vegetarian and eat mostly fish. Each stop featured a different style of food. The places were immaculately clean and the taste were a flavor bomb absolutely recommend this trip not something you wanna miss.
I can not rave enough about this excursion. Our guide was absolutely amazing!! My son said that was the best excursion we had been on. The food was amazing!!! It was awesome to see the market and how people on the island shop. The restaurants are off the main tourist area and are all locals that cook. If you are in Cozumel definitely book this. It is well worth your money!!!!!
Easy meet up with our guide who took us to small family-owned restaurants and explained the food, preparation, spices. Also visited local market and bakery. More than enough food and authentic juices and drinks. Get away from the crowds and enjoy this authentic local experience with a very knowledgeable guide!
Amazing food tour with Erin! Food from local, family owned restaurants. Every stop was better than the last & we were so full! Erin was awesome, personable & proud of local food & history. Highly recommend.
We had an absolutely outstanding experience on the Cozumel Food Tour! The restaurant selection was clearly well-curated, offering a great mix of local flavors, and the included taxi shuttle made getting between stops seamless and comfortable. The variety of beers and local drinks added even more to the experience. Our guide, Erin, was exceptional—both a Cozumel native and well-versed in international travel, she shared great insights and local knowledge throughout the tour. Highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to truly immerse themselves in Cozumel’s cuisine and culture!
Tour guide Erin was excellent. She is very knowledgeable about the foods on the island. We enjoyed the tour of the Farmers Market and the bakery.
This was a great tour of small, local, family-owned restaurants and cuisine. Erin, our guide, was very knowledgeable about the island and the food. We stopped at a local market to see the different meats, seafood and produce produced and available on the island. Very informative!
Erin was a wonderful and knowledgeable guide. Lots of great tasting food! Highly recommend this tour.
A perfect local experience!!
My 18 year old son is a foodie and chose this tour. It did not disappoint! Great food off the beaten path. Everything was delicious and interesting! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable.
Very informative: very good local street tacos at three locations then another chicken soup stop. All provided with instructions on using local sauces. Last stop was. Delicious while fried snapper. Local drinks and beers offered at each stop. Final stop was a local bakery that uses wood fired oven to bake local sweet breads. 11/10 taste as we had straight out the oven..well worth the price for the entire experience,, Erin is very educated and has a masters / PHD.. tip her well .. she teaches at the university and is raising an 11 yo.. You travel in a nice air conditioned van very small distances between each stop.. You will enjoy this tour..
our wonderful tour guide was very knowledgeable about the food and history of the area. Very interesting to go beyond the touristy areas to try authentic and very delicious food! The market and bakery were exceptionally fascinating. We enjoyed our tour and would definitely recommend it to anyone else who would like to get off the beaten path and try some fantastic food.
We had a great time with a knowledgeable guide, great food off the beaten path and tons of information. The small group was a plus as was the visit to the market.
We went to 5 places (6 if you include stopping by the market). The food was amazing at each stop and the staff was so friendly! We got so much more than we expected! I loved our taxi driver too (wish we had gotten his name). The whole experience was amazing and we highly recommend!!!
Everything about this tour was fantastic! Tour guide Erin spoke perfect English, had loads of knowledge about local cuisine, and was very helpful and friendly. Meeting place was easy to find. Recommend that you go hungry! We went 3 hrs after breakfast and could not eat all the food provided on this tour. We went to 5 places frequented by locals including a local market. We did not go to any places that were "touristy", instead we got to eat authentic local food. I 100% recommend it!
Our tour guide Erin was so friendly and knowledgeable about all of the eateries and the market on this tour. The restaurants were true local spots and they each provided wonderful local dishes. We enjoyed learning about the food, its preparation and how it fits into local culture. All of the food we ate was fabulous and we highly recommend this tour as a way to experience and explore a bit of Cozumel history and culture. Thank you Erin for such an amazing day!
This was the best day! Erin is so warm and kind, so knowledgeable and passionate about her home and culture, and the food and beverage was beyond! Run, don’t walk, to book this tour when you’re in Cozumel.
Great food tour! We’ve been traveling to Cozumel for 30 years and the guide presented restaurants that we have never tried before. Great food and wonderful guide!
This tour is a great way to experience the local food scene. We visited restaurants that we never would have considered if we didn’t have a competent guide. All 4 stops we family businesses and the owners were grateful that we came.
Great food and guide. You will eat a ton so come hungry. Very good variety as well. Great opportunity to see Cozumel as well.
Wonderful tour. Mary was an excellent guide and provided a lot of info about the foods, sauces, spices and ingredients of the Mayan influenced foods we sampled. The tour was well organized and each restaurant was ready for us when we arrived and we were served quickly and efficiently. The highlight for me was the fried fish -- outstanding. If you enjoy good local (not touristy) food and cultural info, this is a wonderful tour!
This was the best option when traveling to Cozumel. The experience was just as described. The pick up location, the transportation, and the expert guide. What I didn’t expect, was the explosion of flavor in my mouth.
This was nice that the tour was only my husband and I. Our tour guide Erin was able to give us an informative introduction to the food history of Cozumel.
Everything about this tour was great. The food was absolutely amazing, and our tour guide was super friendly and very knowledgeable of the area. Even went to a market and bakery!
We were greeted by our guide Erin at the designated meeting are and set off to our first stop. She was very friendly and informative on the way. I'm not going to detail each stop other than to say that each stop was fantastic, with different flavors profiled each time. It was excellent, true local cuisine with a story of history, family and tradition behind each. We've done tours around the world and this was one of the best we've experienced. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Cozumel. And if you book it may you be lucky enough to get Erin as your guide.
Our guide Erin was great! Very knowledgeable about the area and each eatery we visited, 5 in all. The food was awesome at every stop. A good variety and very local places, not touristy at all.
One of the best experiences we had on the island over 7 days. Our only regret is we did it at the end of our stay instead of the beginning, as we would have been better equipped to choose meals out and about had we done it sooner. Overall, the guide was incredible and super knowledgeable. All of the food was fantastic, and we made some friends along the way. Absolutely worth it.
Jerry was friendly and knowledgeable and so professional. He explained everything about the foods and drinks. We were stuffed after visiting all the restaurants. It was a nice and relaxing tour for just me and my wife. He was so great we will probably book other tours with him as we are in Cozumel for 4 months. He gave us a good introduction to wonderful Mexican food and drinks...thank you Jerry!!
We were met by Hernando (Jerry) for an amazing afternoon or authentic Mexican food. We visited 4 local restaurants where the locals live, shop, & eat. We learned about and were treated to carnitas, fresh cerviche and fried fish, Lima chicken soup, Conche, shrimp, & octopus tacos. Some of the best food we’ve had in Mexico. We also stopped at a local market. Fresh fruit, nuts, vegetables, & meat. In addition to other local items. Lastly treated to a local bakery where they bake in a wood oven. Highly recommend that you take the time to learn about the food & culture that’s off the beaten path.
We visited several local mom and pop restaurants and markets. We had cochinita, empanadas queso, salbute, sopa de lima, conch ceviche, and several local drinks and pastries Our guide, Erin, also gave us some great insight into the various regions of Mexico and how that’s reflected in their cuisine. We love food tours like this as a way to get a better understanding of the local culture… and of course, eat some really great food!!
Great food the 5 restaurants we visited were all good, with their local dish the last was a fried snapper was really delicious.
I'll start off by saying our guide was very knowledgeable about Cozumel, and she took us to places we never would have found on our own. However, I was surprised that we used a taxi to get to our locations. The driver was nice, but his car cut off twice during our trip. Yes, it started right back up but, this was not what I expected for a $100 per person excursion. The food was good, 3 different textures of chips, ceviche, octopus tacos, a treat from a local bakery and some (new to me) juice. I was surprised that we had to share the fish. It was delicious, and we were not left hungry, but again, for the price, I don't think it was worth it.
Pros: our guide Erin, the food variety, the stop at the market to see ingredients, using buses to move between stops. Cons: directions for the meeting point, size of tour group.
During our Virgin Voyage cruise we stopped in Cozumel and decided we wanted to learn about the area through the food and this was the perfect way to do so. The meetup spot was easy to locate and a short walk from the port. Definitely bring some water to drink along the way! Our tour guide Erin was AMAZING. She was so passionate about everything she shared with us. The tour had five food stops, plus the market and every stop was amazing. We started with cochinita tacos which is tender pork meat marinated in sour orange and achiote and cooked under banana leaves overnight to keep the moisture, it was so delicious! From there we tried another taco option, I chose the garlic shrimp and would recommend you do the same. The shrimp was cooked so well and so flavorful. I also got a hibiscus aqua fresca which was super refreshing on a hot day. After our first two stops we went to the local market so we could understand how the community buys and prepares food. It was here we learned about recado negro and blanco, as well as achiote. These are three spice blends that are the foundation of many mayan recipes along with four different peppers. We saw how the meat and fish was prepared and sold and even tried a fresh lychee which was SOO good. Our third food stop we tried sopa de lima a traditional Yucatán region soup made which chicken, lime and vegetables. This was my favorite stop on the food tour and I will be thinking about it for weeks. The main course at our fourth stop was a fried whole red snapper. It was different but super flavorful and crispy. I ate it alongside a horchata! To wrap up our food tour we stopped at a bakery to get a sweet treat and I had to try a concha which is a traditional sweet bread with a cookie-like topping that resembles a sea shell. I couldn’t recommend this food tour anymore and if you’re hoping to learn about the history and culture of cozumel then this is a fun and yummy way to do so!
