Experience private coaching with with one of our experienced surf coaches: ideal if you want to fast-track your surfing. This course is great for beginners looking for an intense introduction to surfing. However this course is perfect if you've already had a few surf lessons and are looking to improve your technique, catch more waves or iron out bad habits. You will be met at the surf school by the coach, who will assess your surfing experience and tailor the lesson to your current ability. These lessons give lots of instruction and assistance over a short period of time, so ideal if you are looking to accelerate the learning process. For all abilities, we spend approximately 20 minutes on the beach discussing, technique, skills etc. then the remaining time is spent in the ocean catching waves, with hands-on coaching from the surf coach.
Thomas chose 1:1 lessons, the level of attention and skill of the instructor made sure that Thomas was standing riding waves within quite a short time. By the end of the lesson they were paddling out into the deep water. We would definitely go to Escape surf school again.

I booked 4 consecutive days with Escape Surf School, Tuesday to Friday. Lessons are undertaken on Towan Beach where the waves are a bit smaller and more manageable compared to Fistral, ideal for beginners like myself. Keep in mind that sometimes the lesson times may need to be adjusted to better align with the tides, my first lesson had to be moved from 10am to midday. Fortunately communication was excellent and I received both calls and texts from Simone on the front desk about this beforehand. As for the lessons themselves, I was taught by Henry, who had over 20 years of surfing experience under his belt. He went through the entire process of popping up and getting my stance correct on the board while on the beach, before we headed out into the water to apply what I'd learned. Conditions were excellent on all 4 days and the waves were slightly different on each day, which was ideal for a learner such as myself. Overall I couldn't fault Henry at all, he's an excellent teacher. Wetsuits are provided as well as rash vests but you'll need to bring your own towels. There are changing rooms onsite with storage boxes for your stuff. The board I used was a 9' one, but they had different sizes to cater to different tastes and abilities. If you do decide to do one on one lessons I would highly recommend that you do multiple lessons if you have time, as just 1 lesson probably won't be enough to truly get a feel for it. By day 4 I was popping up successfully about 90% of the time, and my balance had improved considerably by then. Overall I would highly, highly recommend Escape Surf School. If I'm ever back in Newquay and want more lessons, I'll be going back to them without hesitation.
Fabulous group. Very friendly and took time to explain everything. Promised my two (age 11 and 13) they would stand up and they did with the great encouragement from Pigeon. Great value.
Cannot praise this place enough, had a great one on one lesson and it was worth every penny. I was abit on the fence as I’d just been picking up surfing on my own and thought I could have got better as time went on. I was completely wrong! Instructor was really helpful, loads of knowledge for my Q’s and knew that I had picked up some bad habits straight away. Talked me through some pointers and areas to change and I was flying on the big waves within the hour! This has helped me on the water ever since and I’m hitting a lot more waves now on my own. I’m useless with names but I think the instructor was Andrew ? (Sorry if I’ve got that wrong) So a big thank you to him, Mike and the rest of the team. Top set of people I’ll be back next year 😁😎🤙
I have taken a mix of private and group lessons with Escape team and must say that I am inevitably hooked on surfing now. Starting from a complete novice that have never been surfing, I am now surfing green waters after only 3 lessons. The instructor’s knowledge of the beaches is beyond impressive. You will be very safe with them. The team explain very well got to read the wave, identify peaks and just help you become more confident in the water. Special thank you to instructor Andrew who has been very patient with me and helped me to concur my fears and build confidence. Additional bonus is the fact that there a lot of “regulars” which created this very special bond and feel of community. Thank you team and I can’t wait to come back again!
Andrew was an excellent instructor and I learned so much during our lesson even with the challenging weather conditions. Heated shower and changing rooms were a bonus. Would highly recommend.
Had an excellent visit, so much so that we repeated it the next day. Beginner lesson with Henry for my two sons aged 6 and 8. Big waves but he kept them safe and they loved it. Will be back for a week family course when we can
Absolutely amazing time! There's a reason why this is THE best surf school in Newquay, and that's the fact that Mike is a living legend... Awesome coach. One-on-one for two hours and I have some great pointers to work on and practice. Definitely recommend! This guy knows every inch of the seabed, and what that does to wave formation, where it will break next and just when. Couldn't have been better!
My teenage daughter surfed with Escape over 5 days this last week and had a superb experience. 4 of those days she joined larger groups and on the last day she got 1:1 coaching from Mike, the owner (and a hugely experienced surfer with international competition experience). All of the sessions were well run and high calibre, with coaches who remained focused and committed to student advancement the whole time. These folks are really professional, friendly and do a great job. The final session in the water with Mike was brilliant - my daughter said it was one of the best days of her life! She made great progress and felt she learned more about surfing in that 2 or so hours, than the rest of the week - and to be clear, she loved the rest of the week too. We felt the entire week represented excellent value for money. If you're looking for somewhere to progress your surfing skills, from total beginner all the way through to competition standard - this is the place to go. Thank you Escape for being so very easy to deal with too.

Absolutely superb lesson for my daughter (Age 12) from Mike Young. Built her confidence as a novice surfer with great and clear coaching tips. Superb with her in the water. Cannot recommend a surf coach highly enough. Brilliant customer service and high level surf coaching for all abilities.

Everyone was so friendly and welcoming including the lady on reception and all the instructors. The lessons were engaging and helpful. I felt I improved so much over my two days of lessons. Will definitely be coming back for more lessons in the future!

I've had 3 lessons now with Mike, Reubin and Henry and these have by far been the best surf lessons I've had. They were proper lessons, teaching me technique and really making progress - Not just getting in the water to ride the odd wave, but getting me to work on technique and all. Mike and I have discussed future steps as well. I actually feel confident in my ability to surf thanks to the team at Escape. At the beginning of 2020 I also made the most of the off-season deals Escape had with the St Christopher's Inn above.

I had a couple of private lessons with Mike. It was great to be out with someone with so much surfing experience, knowledge of local conditions and also the ability to teach - Mike has clearly put a great deal of effort into his teaching methods. I caught a load of waves on both occasions, learned a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I will be back!
I have had three private lessons with Mike and I cannot rate him highly enough. If Mike can get me surfing, he can get anyone up on a board as I am a 46 year old female recovering from illness which has affected my strength and balance. I am not an ideal candidate for beginner's surfing but Mike got me up on the board in my first lesson which was so motivating! Lessons with Mike have made a tough sport feel very achievable and it's been so much fun! He is a great teacher - very patient and encouraging but also very technical so I work smarter, not harder and I believe that makes a big difference to my endurance. Mike has coached the British junior surf team and his calibre really shows as he is very focused during the lessons and gives a lot of constructive and intelligent feedback. He is a highly skilled and innovative teacher and he puts a lot of effort into my lessons which I really appreciate. I also appreciate the warm welcome I always get at the school - Simone, the office manager, is very friendly and helpful too. It's a great school with great people who get great results!
