About Activity
Copenhagen is now well established as one of the world's most exciting food cities, and there is no better way to understand why than by eating your way through the Danish capital, one bite at a time, with a local expert guide well acquainted with its history and fascinating food culture. Our small group food tour provides a delectable deep dive into Denmark’s gastronomy as well as the history, ingredients and people behind it.
On your 3-hour small group tour, you will:
- Get an authentic taste of Denmark with a local guide;
- Explore some of Copenhagen’s most iconic neighbourhoods, including Nyhavn and Christianshavn;
- Get a crash course in Danish culinary culture and how it intersects with Copenhagen’s history;
- Visit various local eateries to enjoy a thoughtful selection of tastings, from classic smørrebrød and Danish hot dogs to inventive modern street food;
- Sip on Danish wine, beer or soft drinks along the way;
- Learn about the New Nordic Cuisine movement that transformed Copenhagen into a major foodie destination, and the new wave of pioneering chefs who continue to change the game;
- Satisfy your sweet tooth by sampling sticky cardamom buns at a traditional bakery.
On your engaging small group tour, you’ll be paired with a knowledgeable local guide for a leisurely walk through two of the capital's most characterful neighbourhoods: the postcard-perfect harbour of Nyhavn and the laid-back, canal-laced streets of Christianshavn. Along the way, you'll stop at a handpicked rotation of authentic local eateries to taste the flavours that define Danish food, both old and new.
Expect to work through a proper culinary cross-section of the city. Whilst tastings can of course vary by day or by season, you’ll typically tuck into some classic open-faced smørrebrød piled high with traditional toppings, a Ristet hotdog from a beloved street stand, and a comforting bowl of robust red lentil daal porridge that speaks to Copenhagen's multicultural food scene. Then things take a more inventive turn, with a stop at a street food spot serving up playful, ingredient-driven dishes inspired by the New Nordic Cuisine movement, the culinary revolution that turned this city into a global gastronomic destination almost overnight. Your guide will walk you through how it all started, who the key players were, and which young chefs are now pushing things in new directions.
Naturally, no Danish food tour is complete without a drink in hand. Your tastings will be paired with local beer, soft drinks or a glass of wine, perhaps an aromatic Danish Riesling, a lovely surprise for those who don't associate Denmark with vineyards. Last but certainly not least, you'll finish at a traditional bakery with a warm, sticky cardamom bun that reveals centuries of culinary innovation.
By the time you end your evening, you’ll have gained an understanding of what shapes the Danish plate today, and why this small Nordic capital punches so far above its weight on the world food stage.
