Educational about the mountains we were seeing, history and geology too. Friends enjoyed the narrator, professional male voice.

Itinerary
As you drive through Durango, you'll get acquainted with this fascinating town and the man who put it on the map: Otto Mears. Hear how Mears turned this from a ramshackle railroad camp into the bustling destination it is today. Note: The tour is over 72 miles long, with more than 51 audio stories, and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. New, Lifetime access, no expiry. Use it anytime, on any trip, as many times as you want.
Your northbound tour along the Million Dollar Highway begins in Durango. From here, you'll head north and discover why millions of people come from all over to visit this jaw-dropping stretch of highway.
Along the way you'll pass the Animas River, a 126-mile tributary of the San Juan River. This gorgeous river may have a benign name now, but the first European explorer to find it gave it a much more chilling title.
Next up is Pinkerton Hot Springs, named after dairy agriculturist James Pinkerton, who built a resort and hotel by the springs which also functioned as an illegal speakeasy during prohibition! The resort is long gone, but the natural beauty of the hot springs remains.
Baker's Bridge might be an unassuming landmark, but it holds major significance for classic movie buffs. This is the spot where Paul Newman and Robert Redford made their famous leap into the Animas River in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid!
Haviland Lake State Park is a fantastic place to break up a long drive with a picnic or an icy swim. This picture-perfect lake is shaded by towering pines and offers great views of the Hermosa Cliffs beyond. It's also a no-wake lake undisturbed by larger motorboats.
Molas Pass rises an incredible 10,910 feet above sea level, making it one of the highway's two highest mountain passes. Despite this elevation, it's also a famous landmark along an annual bicycle racing route! Skilled cyclists huff their way to the top, then ride gravity the rest of the way down.
Pristine, peaceful, and very chilly, Molas Lake is one of the best places to view the San Juan Mountains and the Weminuche Wilderness. Formed by glaciers thousands of years ago, it's now an absolutely perfect picnic spot for the weary traveler.
Silverton might get its name from the precious metal once mined in its vicinity, but the history of this land dates back way before the arrival of miners and their mules. As you pass through, you'll get a glimpse into the history of the Ute tribe who once called this their home, and what happened to them when the mining rush began.
Along your way, you'll pass the remains of Ironton. Once a booming mining town, built largely around the harvest of iron ore, Ironton is now one of many ghost towns which were left behind after mining operations in these mountains went bust. The last Ironton resident died in 1960.
Bear Creek Falls is a dramatic, 200 foot cascading waterfall that is an absolute must-see along your route. If you're visiting in the fall, the autumn foliage makes this already impressive attraction even better.
In the final stretch of your tour, you'll enter the storied town of Ouray. Nicknamed "the Switzerland of America," this picturesque mountain town isn't just a pretty face. It's also packed with things to do! From ice parks to waterfalls, it's a place ripe for discovery.
From December to March, the Ouray Ice Park offers wintery experiences for intrepid adventurers. The park's main attraction is an enormous ice wall created specifically for climbing.
Ouray's Box Canyon Falls Park is overflowing with cool scenery. Imposing canyon walls, great hiking trails, and scenic picnic spots define much of the park. But the main draw is the huge waterfall tumbling over the edge of the canyon, which you can view from below and above!
Ouray's Historical District has beautifully preserved its roots as a 19th-century mining town. The district boasts plenty of picturesque Victorian-era homes and commercial structures, as well as a gorgeous opera house which was saved from the brink of demolition.
The last stop along your tour is the Ouray Visitor's Center, a great place to get situated for a longer visit to this quaint little town. Your tour will conclude here.

Reviews
We purchased the Million Dollar Highway Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour. The tour was very informative. The only issue I had was that the drive is so challenging that I, as the driver, was too focused to really enjoy it. The amount of traffic was surprisingly high as well with many Class A motor homes towing vehicles! Yikes.
Some interesting information and we learned several things. We had one really good stop at Andrews Lake and I would highly recommend stopping there, but several of the other stops mentioned in the tour were very difficult to find or inaccessible without a 4 x 4 vehicle - this was not indicated in the audio. A few times we had passed the site before the audio kicked in.
Well worth the cost. Makes the trip enjoyable and educational. Can be a distraction from the sheer cliffs
This was a total scam. We were not able to get the app while in Colorado. Phone number I called was bogus . the guy didn't know anything about this app. took the trip without the stops. Do not fall for this.
This was the BEST 20 bucks i have ever spent. Stopped at a lot of the points of interests and made a whole day trip of it. Highly recommend!
Really amazing how the tour tracks your location and automatically starts speaking when you get to a certain point on the road. The stories were informative and entertaining. Helpful. Fun!
This is such an informative and interesting self-guided audio tour! I highly recommend it. It had offshoot places to visit off the highway that I think we would have probably missed. Get this! you won't regret it.
We really appreciated the audio insights along the road. Had no idea gps audio guides were a thing. It really enriched the drive for us.
Easy to download and was a great way to travel through the Million Dollar Highway. Interesting history stories and points of interest. So glad we purchased the audio tour.
Very nice presentation glad we purchased it
So helpful on our drive today on the Million Dollar highway. It was amazing how it would just start right in where we were and give us notice ahead of time what was happening!
We have done this drive 4 times over the past few summers. We were hoping to get more insight into the local history. geology, flora & fauna. We did not. We were disappointed we learned so little. This audio tour is a very basic introduction to this area. Anyone hoping to gain insight to the area will be disappointed. One last comment: There is so much blank time on the tour, there is no excuse not to have more information.
Thought the app was very well put together. It informs you of the area and hidden gems that just driving you would not know about. It was so nice telling you then where and when to turn for those hidden gems. They also don’t talk during the highly intense areas.
Was not able to go on tour due to medical issues. When I contacted them to cancel, response was immediate, competent and caring.
Only problem we had with the app was when we got to the point of where the point of interest was there was no signage to know where to turn. Or it wasn't very clear where to turn.
Auto tour educational and made the trip more meaningful
Very helpful and informative! We were able to access little hidden gems that we would not have otherwise known about had it not been for this audio tour.
Could not get it to work on Apple car play. Felt unsafe to use on only phone due to route being very hazardous. Probably Would be good with other conditions
The instructions were very clear and the narrative was interesting and informative. We were new to this part of Colorado and would never see all the great places
Once purchased, download the app identified in your email, then download the tour from the app. There are two files, one for southbound travel and the second for northbound. The tour provides you with a starting location, but is designed to give information at specific gps locations on the road (does not talk continuously). This is hands free, and plays through the device or through the vehicle's audio system (android auto, car play, or Bluetooth). Once you start it, it will automatically activate once you enter the gps location, so this is very safe to use. The narrator is clear, easy to understand and the information pertains to the trip, as well as being entertaining. My wife and I both enjoyed it, and hope to use more of these in the future.
Good for the family love the ability to go at your own pace! This was a very educational and informative audio tour. Learning the history was great and understanding what lengths was taken to create this passage. Love learning the history. So many times you visit new locations and only get bits and pieces of the history. This audio tour allows you to understand and learn and get actual facts right at your finger tips!
We absolutely loved the Million Dollar Highway self-guided tour! The narration was clear, engaging and full of fascinating stories about the history, scenery and towns along the route. The timing of the commentary was perfect, it always matched where we were on the road. And the tips about places to stop, photo spots and overlooks were spot on, too. We have driven this road many times in the past but this gave us a new perspective. This tour turned what was already one of the most beautiful dives in the country into truly memorable experience. We highly recommend!
The auto tour gave lots of great information. Pointed out places of interest and how the area was settled and by whom. Nice narration.
Informative tour of the million dollar highway! App worked well and we learned about the area. I recommend it!
First time trying this out! It was a really great way to learn about the area while we drove through. Glad we did it!
Was pleasantly surprised. We decided to drive the Million dollar Highway in fall. I purchased the audio tour on a whim. It was very informative. Was nice to hear the stories and history along the way based the drive. I was skeptical on how it would work with gps tracking and loosing reception. Even when loosing reception it triggered to speak. I loved the opportunity to take small detours along the route to visit more off the beaten path locations. I wish it had included a few more of those but road signs showed me those.
The information was superb, all the sites listed along the way were great! My husband and I were very glad we purchased this tour!!
So glad we did this! Wonderful experience and without this tour guide we wouldn’t have known to stop at all the amazing places along the way. So easy to use and listen to as you drive
We enjoyed the audio tour. It definitely let you know about places you most likely would have driven past. Beautiful drive especially in the fall when the trees are colorful.
Very easy to use and provided an interesting and engaging way to do the drive. Loved the little stories and insights to accompany my travel. I didn't have the extra time to take advantage of the stops recommended during the tour, but loved how it gave these recommendations and provided the heads up for turning instructions and time-allotment info. Wish there were more driving tours like this available all over!
My husband and I thought the tour was great! It was informative and easy to use. We stopped at a couple of the suggested pull-outs along the way that we would not have known about otherwise. We also saw a moose in the wild and that was really cool!
Everyone in the car enjoyed the details of what we probably would have missed without the guide. Very informative way to learn about new places!
We had the best time on this tour. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, and the tour guided us to breathtaking sites we wouldn’t have found on our own. Highly recommended!
This was well worth the cost. The tour took us on a beautiful adventure, and we got to go on our own pace. We learned a lot of history also, which was very interesting.
Be sure to download the app and find your password before the day of the adventure. I did both and no issues at all. First time for an audio tour and we loved it! Good voice, good pace. good stories. Definitely will look for another audio tour on our next outing!
We really enjoyed this app. The narration was great and the explanation of all the stops was very informative and we felt like we learned a lot on our trip by using your app.
The app worked as advertised and was very enjoyable. It made the trip much more interesting. If I could offer any advice for improvement I would have liked guidance to the initial starting point of the tour. Other than that it was great.
Fun drive through the picturesque mountains with interesting facts presented along the way. Lots of spots for photos.
Didn’t work. Couldn’t get it to play. Absolutely useless. Do not waste your time with this self-guided tour.
I loved the audio tour. However, the map system on the tour got lost after Molas Overlook and didn't find me again until the last 3 numbers at Ouray. I still made it work. I struggled a little to figure out where I needed to go in Silverton and it was really hard to navigate where I was and manually push the numbers to listen to them. I was by myself, so I didn't have somebody that could help me. If it wasn't for the technical difficulties, this would have been great. Also, there were A LOT of stops that you could easily spend 45 minutes to several hours at. I think that should be clearly noted in the tour description.
Self guided tour worked very well. It was very informative and we were able to pull off and see things that we would’ve not done. Had we not had the tour. Was totally worth it.
Very informative and interesting audio tour. Details were timely and helpful. This is not a drive for the timid. We experienced sunny day and then sleet, snow at the highest elevation for a bit of the drive. Go prepared and enjoy the sights.
I really enjoyed this audio tour! It was easy to use, I followed directions and downloaded before hand which came in handy during those dead zones. I loved learned the knowledge and history about everything along the way. I think it would be nice if they had instrumental music inbetween stories so it doesn’t completely shock you when it comes back on lol. Otherwise HIGHLY recommend. We got to see a lot of sites that others were passing up.
Great experience, lots of good info shared on this tour. Very similar to the Guide-Along App, phone uses GPS to guide the tour.
This was a very pleasing tour, we did on our time. Was total must see places. It was clear and we understood all the directions in which to go. The little hikes were well explained as to what the hike was rated and how far each one was. We would love to find another one in a different area. Loved the tour.
This was a once in a lifetime experience that should not be missed! But keep in mind it is not for the faint of heart! The road is a little steep! But breathtaking views and the commentary makes it soooo much better. The trip is 2 hours approximately one way! Keep in mind as we didn’t and were almost late for our other tour in Meza Verde.
This was an informational guide that told us of places we might have missed. I wish that it gave more notice about where to stop for each place. Some of them were dirt roads with inclines and we could not take our motorhome up the hills. Some we passed because we were going to quickly and turning that big rig around is hard. I think some of the narration was done during a different season as it speaks of a few waterfalls that were not visible, but probably are after the snow starts to melt. I felt that it was absolutely worth the money, and hope to do the tour again in a different season with a different vehicle.
Fun and informative companion for a drive along the million dollar highway. The technology was great. I’ll be looking into other tours offered.
The trip was one of the most scenic highways we've ever seen! The audio tour was perfect. We were able to see things that we would have missed if we didn't have the audio tour.
