The pickup point for cruise ships is by the main port gate 1A. The pickup point specified by the tour operator shows it as being right by the cruise terminal and it is a substantial walk along dangerous roads to get from the ship to the port main gate. The tour is specified as being 4 to 5 hours long, however this tour only lasted 2.5 hours and we did not go into the National Museum ( as advertised), but drove straight past it instead. Cruise passengers should note that you need to get any shuttle buses back to the ship from the City centre and not from the port main gate as they are not allowed to pick up from there.

The current 29-metre-high (95 ft) lighthouse was built in 1952 after the Old Colombo Lighthouse was deactivated when its light became obscured by nearby buildings as part of the Colombo Harbor Expansion project. It was opened by Rt Hon D.S. Senanayake, the first prime minister of Ceylon. Built on a concrete base which is 12 m (39 ft) high, it has four statues of lions at its base. Due to the panoramic view of the Indian Ocean it offered, it became a city landmark. With the escalation of the Sri Lankan Civil War, public access to the site was restricted. This was due to its placement in a high-security zone as it is across the street from the Naval Headquarters and close proximity of the Port of Colombo.

Sri Lanka has been referred to as RatnaDvipa, island of gems from ages past. The moniker is well deserved for the abundance and variety of gem deposits the island is blessed with. Famed for excellent Sri Lankan blue sapphires, no less beautiful are the cat’s eyes, Alexandrites, rubies, star stones and various other precious and semi- precious gems found here. We take you on a gem tour covering a gem museum where you will learn about the gem industry in Sri Lanka through an informative film, see a mock-up of a gem pit where you get the hang of traditional gem mining, and visit a gem and jewellery gallery where you may inspect the dazzling stones at close quarters using a loupe, learning to distinguish quality based on colour, size, luster, and the absence of imperfections. Finally you will see the stones being set in to jewellery.

recently used cab service in colombo and had a good experience with driver Feroj. He was very polite patience and even suggested a few interesting local places to visit.cab arrived on time, the car was clean and comfortable, i highly recommend this service.
Great trip. Feroz was the perfect driver. Very friendly and accommodating. The activities were well planned and interesting. Overall a good day spent driving around with some good activities.
We spent the day driving to various parts of Sri Lanka. The things we saw were the: Elephant Activity Spice Garden Tea Factory Waterfall View Point Our Driver was - Ferose, who was excellent in sharing the country’s history and navigating the streets for us to see & learn about Sri Lanka. I recommend Kingfisher Tours in Sri Lanka. This company is an excellent resource to utilize for excursions in Sri Lanka.
Feroz is a good driver, on time when picking us up at Galle Face hotel in Colombo. The car was suzuki avery, very clean, and AC was working well. He took us to Spice Garden (good 20 minute massage here for free preferrably with tips 1000-3000 LKR is enough), Ramboda Falls and a tea factory/plantation in Kandy. If you like elephants, Feroz will show you a good place here. Those were the highlights of the trip. Sadly, we saw some dirts and debris from Cyclone Dithwa. Feroz explained very well what happened before, during, and after the cyclone. So this is the humane side of the story when people lost lives, homes, and shops. However, when we passed through the roads the locals have already started their lives and business as usual. There were slight delays due to tractors with fork lift cleaning the roads. The whole one day trip was a very long one (staring from 8 a.m. until 9p.m.) but I suggest if you have more time stay in Kandy. Before we ended the tours, Feroz offered to take photos in front of the icon of Colombo (The Lotus Tower) and he is a great photographer, knows good angles. His smartphone does magic to these photos. I recommend Kingfisher Tours partner of Viator (Tripadvisor). They offer many tours to Sri Lanka.
Akish was a very good guide and showed and explained the sites we visited or passed by. He even bought us coconut to try. The only thing that disappointed was the Gem Museum. I thought we were getting a different type of experience learning more about gems and how they go from stone to gem but instead if felt like an ambush to buy their jewelry.
We felt like we had really won the lottery when Feroze was assigned as our tour guide. He totally understood our expectations and time constraints and delivered so much more. It was so nice to have a tour guide that was proud of his city, showcasing all the highlights and more. Far more important than any landmarks, we learnt how beautiful, kind, calm and peaceful the Sri Lankan people are with their warm hospitality. Feroze was totally flexible and nothing was too much trouble. He was an extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide and we were so thrilled with the wonderful photos he took of us too. We wish we could have taken Feroze home with us.
Driver Ferose was excellent very jolly and informative. Was enthusiastic about every venue and would recommend him to future travellers.
You can tailor your trip as you go. Just work it out with your driver. Be sure to tell him where you might want to get out and enter a building.
Visiting the Hindu temple and Buddist museum. The driver knew the city very well and drove safely through the busy streets.
We were picked up promptly at the cruise port. We had a driver and a separate guide. They were both excellent. The guide was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions and he catered the tour to our desires.
Our guide Ashik from Kingfisher Tours was amazing. A careful driver and very informative and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Sri Lanka
Driver, Khan, excellent. Vehicle, Suzuki car, small, comfortable even for 6' 4" person sat in front and two small in back. great air-con (important in Colombo!). Terrible communication. No local contact number. I guessed at Port Gate 1a as the most likely pickup point, there was nobody to geet us. I asked other drivers looking for business, they were friendly and helpful but didn't know Kingfisher Tours. Eventually, Khan appeared, he didn't know our name or booking details, but we 'had to be' his clients that day, so off we went and had an enjoyable tour with a very nice, helpful guide/driver.
Had an amazing half day tour and our guide was phenomenal. We were on a cruise so he picked us up at the port gate which was great. We saw and did so many things, Buddhist and Hindu temples, mosques, tea, gems, government buildings, lotus tower, neighborhoods, shopping streets and beach. We tried almond tarts with our iced coffee break at the bottom of the tower (tasty but drier than cake we’re used to). Two of our group travel with walkers and poc’s and our guide made everything we did as easy as possible to accommodate us.
We had previously seen the main sites of Columbo, so we asked to visit other off the route places. The driver & guide were really helpful and adaptable to our wishes and redesigned the day to fit with our plans. Great people and fantastic tour.
pleasant guide and accommodating to our needs and interests. Nice tour of city and included visit to gem and teas store without any forcing to purchase
We had a lovely time seeing Colombo with our guide Noor. Especially loved the Hindu temple and Independence Square. We hadn't been to Colombo before, so this tour was spot on. My wife has mobility limitations so we could customise it accordingly and Noor was so considerate. Definitely recommend this
Amazing tour, covered the whole city and all of the amazing sites and temples . Our guide Ferose was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. Highly recommend this private tour with Kingfisher tours.
Such a wonderful tour well planned timewise. We were picked up outside the ship and the 4 hours travelling in this busy city with these guys made our trip a memorable one, Our guide Aashik was well experienced and very friendly which made us feel like we know each other for years. His explainations and the knowledge of each places are really impressive We will come back again in August for a round tour and will never hesitate to use this company and Aashik for sure
Basically just got a driver who was clearly never a guide. Nice guy, but had limited english and talked very little. First tour that this has happened. Reported to Viator and they did nothing and didnt seem to care at all. They never got back to me either as they promised, very dissapointed
We saw the Shore Excursion Tour through Viator and booked with Kingfisher. They are before one hour of Ship Docking time and we are so happy with our guide Aswar who is very friendly and trying to help us in every way, Aswar showed and guided us explaining every places in Colombo. We extended our Tour for another two hours and started our shopping at Gem Museum, Tea Shop and Souvenirs Shop. Kingfisher Tours are doing a great job with all their perfect well planned Itineraries and Professional Guide Highly Recommended
Kingfisher Tours gave us an excellent tour of all the highlights of Colombo. This was our first time in Sri Lanka’s port city and we opted for a private tour. We were not disappointed. Our guide was great and very accommodating as we tend to walk a bit slower (we are in our 70s). Our guide took pictures of us a various locations as well. We highly recommend Kingfisher Tours Sri Lanka.
