Felipe is a fabulous Guide! It was a small intimate group of 3 couples. It was great that Felipe knew so much about the University having been a student and former employee. We saw all the important spaces and learned so much about the University and Coimbra! Highly recommend the great tour with Felipe!
Felipe was a great guide!. Easy to find the meeting place and very informative tour for our group of 3. Felipe was a former student and related lots of inside knowledge. A really great tour!
Rennan, our guide, is the most animated and engaging guide I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing! He made history come alive by turning it into an a one man show! He was thorough in his explanations while also bringing the stories to life. The library was the highlight. It is beyond your wildest imagination! And there is a surprise location that I couldn’t believe exists in an academic setting! I have high standards since I am an educator, but Rennan is pure delight! I highly recommend this tour.
I liked the enthousuastic way of informing!
Wonderful tour guide, Felipe. He went above and beyond giving us food recommendations too! The library is magnificent and worth taking the tour for.
Eva was very knowledgeable and professional. The sights she showed us greatly supplemented what we knew of Coimbra. Highly recommended!
Filipe is an excellent, engaging guide. We appreciated his perspective and the history and context he provided on our small group tour. He also shared helpful recommendations for the remainder of our stay.
Renan has advanced degrees from the university at Coimbra and an encyclopedic knowledge not only of the school but the history of Portugal and its evolution as a country in the Iberian Penninsula. Absolutely terrific exposition of details, dates, political and economic power, and global influences. Next best thing to a class at the school, and no test!
Wow. Does Renan know his stuff! He was highly entertaining and funny with a quick wit. Having attended the University of Coimbra himself, and could offer insight an insider's perspective. He was made for this job as a history major and now a guide. Coimbra was one of our favorite stops in Portugal and Renan was a big part of the reason.
We were a bit unsure what to expect from a tour of a University (a possibility that it would be boring) but this tour definitely exceeded our expectations. The tour agenda was as straightforward as described but our guide, Renan, was excellent - full of energy, funny, a fountain of knowledge (impressive) and a cute personality. His English was excellent. And apparently, he knows a bit about rock music (inside joke)! He truly made the tour excellent. We highly recommend his tour.
Excellent, well informed tour guide, Felipe! He was patient with all of our questions and a wealth of knowledge!
A terrific, small group tour that hit every point we wanted to see. Of course the library was the highlight, but Felipe shared the stories of the students placed in prison under the library for running havoc in the town, or even for disagreeing with a Prof. He had been a student and an employee of the university. He also seemed to know all the staff we encountered personally. There was no rushing, and plenty of time for questions he generally had the answers to. An aside, his recommendations for places to eat were great!
Phillipe ( sorry if the spelling is wrong) was amazing. I took so many notes on this tour as his knowledge of the university was amazing. He was a student there and has also worked at the uni. We had a nice size group of 14. Easy to hear his talk with his Bluetooth headphones. Well worth the tour.
Pedro was very informative and full of facts and history without being overbearing. I love that the tour was under 2 hours. Just doing the Palace, library and church was perfect. I highly recommend this tour. Ask for Pedro!.
We learned so much on the Coimbra University tour. Felipe is an excellent guide! He is so knowledgeable and has excellent communication skills. The university library is amazing. We are so glad we made an overnight stop in Coimbra to take this tour.
Fellipe gave us a lovely tour of the library and the Palace. He was very knowledgeable about the University and it's history. We so appreciated learning from him. If you visit Coimbra, you should definitely take this tour. And, just walk through the streets of Coimbra. It is charming and a lovely place to visit.
Felipe did a wonderful job explaining the history of the university as a former student himself. We were able to tour a portion of the palace and the library. The cathedral was closed due to a funeral. We appreciated his thorough explanation to our questions and his recommendations after the tour. If you’re staying at the bottom of the Coimbra please be aware it is a steep climb to the top, so not for the faint of heart on a warm day.
This was a quick 90 minute tour. Our guide (Filipe) was very knowledgeable and was a former student of the University. I highly recommend this tour if you only have a short time in Coimbra to see the University.
Knowledgeable guide, well-organized, no better way to see and learn about the library, chapel, and royal palace.
I did this tour in April and I am back in Coimbra with my adult son this time. Both times, our guides were so well versed and studied. This time our guide, Rennanl, was super great, very patient and gave us lots of interesting information. He was super good. And I like this tour because it's a small group and you get to see a lot of interesting things.
Filipe was an excellent guide and was very knowledgeable about the university and its history. We had a small group (only 5 of us) and it was a great experience. He made sure to answer all of our questions and also was kind enough to provide us with some recommendations for restaurants and bars in the area. I would definitely recommend this experience for anyone looking to have a more in depth visit to the university.
Felipe was a former student and then employed by the University so he had a lot of personal knowledge. It was just us and another couple. His English was excellent and he did not mind questions. The old campus is beautiful and I found the history very interesting. School has not started for the year so we saw only a few students in their cloaks. It is forbidden to take pictures inside the library but it was unbelievable. You expect house elves to come out and shelve books
If you’re looking to have the in’s-and-outs tour of the old university then choose this! Our tour guide was a student here so he definitely was the right one to give the tour. Detailed and on time!
Coimbra university was an enjoyable and worthwhile tour. The library and chapel were beautiful and our guide was knowledgable interesting. We would recomm the tour.
Brilliant tour of the university! Our guide Renan was engaging and knowledgable. We learned about the long history of the university, which predates Portugal! He was able to provide an excellent background on each aspect of the tour: the palace, student jail, royal portraits, the beautiful chapel and library. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and especially the enthusiasm of our guide! Highly recommended!
Fantastic tour with Guide Renan who brings history to life. Excellent knowledge of the past in good English. Very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
our travel agent set us up with a guide for this tour. it was fascinating. So, not only is it a university with kids running around in robes like Hogwarts but it is also a palace and museum. On top of it, the library is fascinating, as was the chapel. They were playing the organ when we were there. There seemed to be a question about whether we really wanted to do this tour and I dont know why because, it was a great experience!
Amazing tour! Was great to have tickets and entry coordinated and our guide Filipe was very knowledgeable and had great local recommendations too!
Renan was our guide and he was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable about all the different aspects of the Coimbra University. He spoke English well. I highly recommend this guided tour with Renan because he provided a lot of history beyond just the sites. He gave background about why certain buildings and contents were present. He included historical events that gave a wonderful picture. He is also a former student so provided how current and past students used the buildings.
Very interesting and informative guided tour. The library is absolutely gorgeous. Definitely worth it. I highly recommend!
Filipe was an excellent guide! I can’t imagine going to the university without the inside knowledge of the history he provided. The library information alone was outstanding, but we learned so much more than that on his tour. Highly recommend!
This is a fabulous 90-minute tour of the Royal Palace, the Chapel and the Joanina library. Our guide Felipe gave us just the right amount of history and explanations, with a fun sense of humour. He was extremely knowledgeable and easy to chat with. The tour allows you to bypass any lines into the sites, and you don't have to deal with tickets for each one. Felipe did it all with his phone. The pace of the tour was just right - not rushed nor too slow. We highly recommend it!
We all really enjoyed our tour experience and Renan was such a pleasant man with so much enthusiastic information, he made our tour special.
Renan did a very good tour and taught us quite a bit about both Portuguese history and the University history. Very interesting!!
This was a very educational experience. We learned about the former king’s palace, the history of the university, the chapel where the Kings worshipped and the Coimbra library, which was beautiful.
Our guide was Renan and he was fabulous! The tour was just not about the University but about the history of Portugal including cultural aspects. His knowledge of Portugal history is unbelievable. And his delivery was great. Run, don't walk to his tours.
Very good tour. Guide was extremely knowledgeable and funny.
Renan is a passionate, knowledgeable, and friendly guide that provided a detailed overview of the history of Portugal, Coimbra, the University, and insights into the monument itself. Our group of four had a wonderful time and I would highly recommend this tour.
Our time with Filipe was incredibly educational. He was not only very knowledgeable about the university and library but was passionate about Coimbra overall and was able to convey the cultural significance of the university in a way that was easy to understand. We highly recommend this tour.
Excellent and informative tour. Felipe was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Took his time with the group and answered all questions
Filipe was a fabulous guide. His knowledge of The University of Coimbra and it's long history was so engaging! The Joanina Library & Capela de São Muguel were stunningly beautiful. Filipe curated our time in these places with artistry and acumen, giving us time to really take it in.
Interesting and informative experience
Renan was incredible guide. A PhD candidate who went to Coimbra University. Well versed in history and politics
Had a great time! The tour hit all of the highlights of the location, but also was very informative on the overall history of Portugal and our tour guide presented the information in a very fun way that stuck with us. Highly recommend!
Filipe was very informative,he answered all our questions , he had a great depth of knowledge
Wow, I’d give more stars, if that was possible! Our 2 hour tour with the effervescent Roger was both informative and entertaining. Likely because of his background as a writer, Roger’s knowledge and presentation was second to none. He even read one of his poems to us, when requested. Many thanks Roger! I will keep an out for your published works! Thank you, also, for taking that wonderful photo of us!
This tour of the University of Coimbra was a great day trip from Porto. Renan was my guide, and I appreciated his enthusiasm for showing his Alma matter. As a local of Coimbra, he was quite knowledgeable with not only the university’s history, but also with regards to Portugal’s history. If you have an extra day in Porto, or are staying in Coimbra, check out this tour.
This was a great tour to have done with an extra day in Porto. I took a bus during the morning to Coimbra, and made it in time for the start of the tour. Renan was my guide, and being a local that had attended the university there in Coimbra, he was perfect to show me around and explain the history of the university. The library was incredible. Definitely consider this tour if you have some Extra time in Porto.
It was easy to meet up with Filipe in Dom Dinis Square. He even kindly phoned us to make sure we were in the right place. From the start, he was warm, engaging, very knowledgable and patient, especially as two people in our group of four had mobility difficulties. He allowed us to take our time and encouraged us to ask questions. What we saw was amazing and it was made all the more interesting through his inside knowledge, as he had been a student at the University himself. We were absolutely delighted with our tour. What a wonderful way to spend our morning.
