Darren- Thank you! I know we hit a snag but you handled it like an expert. Thank you for helping with the ride, even from Fatima, and the ride to the train depot in the morning. Darren even helped us get the right tickets! We felt totally taken care of. I have no doubt we chose the best possible guide to learn about the Templars.

Inside, discover centuries-old tombs, intricate azulejo tiles, and a peaceful atmosphere that echoes the Templars’ legacy. We are pilgrims passing through on the way to Santiago, and we’re looking for some in-depth knowledge about the Templar Knights. Darren did not disappoint. He picked us up in his SUV and we went to the Almoural castle where he told us about the history of the Templar Knights in Portugal,, we also had coffee there. Then we went back to Convent of Christ and did an in-depth tour there with all sorts of stories and information about the Templar Knights. It was well worth it, and made our visit much more memorable.
Darren provided a very personal and thorough tour—much better than your run of the mill big tour operator experience we encountered on this trip. He is very knowledgeable and explains the Templar history in an easy to understand fashion Highly recommend
Our guided tour of the Convent of Christ in Tomar with Darren was an outstanding experience. We met him in the town square, and he kindly drove us to the convent. A British guide who has lived in Portugal for 20 years, Darren combines an excellent knowledge of Portuguese history with genuine enthusiasm for the Knights Templar, architecture and the country’s cultural heritage. From the beginning, the tour was informative, engaging and interactive. Darren took us on a fascinating journey through the history of the Knights Templar—from their foundation in the early 12th century in the Holy Land, where they protected pilgrims and supported the Kingdom of Jerusalem, to the order’s suppression in France in the early 14th century. He explained the unusual nature of the Templars as both a religious and military order, and described their humble origins as the “Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ,” represented by the famous symbol of two knights sharing one horse. He also showed how their role in protecting pilgrims led them to develop sophisticated financial services, making them one of Europe’s earliest banking institutions. Darren brought the political and financial circumstances surrounding the Templars’ downfall to life, including the debts owed to them by King Philip IV of France, known as Philip the Fair. He explained how the order was persecuted, tortured and accused of heresy, with several members eventually executed. The Portuguese chapter of the story was particularly compelling. While the Templars were suppressed in France and elsewhere, their military experience and resources remained valuable to Portugal during the Reconquista. King Dinis established the Order of Christ in 1319, allowing much of the Templars’ Portuguese legacy, property and expertise to continue under a new name. Darren also explained the connection between the Order of Christ, Prince Henry the Navigator and Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. The order’s wealth and influence helped support Portugal’s maritime expansion, and its cross became closely associated with Portuguese voyages and exploration. As we explored the convent, Darren went beyond the history of the Templars. He pointed out the complex’s defensive features and explained how it developed over many centuries. He helped us appreciate the mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance and later architectural elements, showing how each period left its mark on this extraordinary site. The Convent of Christ and the Castle of Tomar were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Darren was an excellent guide: knowledgeable, passionate, engaging and approachable. He made the history feel alive and helped us understand the convent not merely as a beautiful monument, but as a place where military history, religion, politics, architecture and Portugal’s maritime ambitions all come together. For English-speaking visitors interested in history, architecture or the Knights Templar, a visit to Tomar is an absolute must. The Convent of Christ is a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site, and we highly recommend Darren as the perfect guide to uncover its fascinating story.
Darren was a very knowledgeable and passionate guide. His tour was exceptional due to his many years of researching facts versus fiction. His knowledge brings you to the time of the early 12th century where you can almost see the knight and horses in the castle. He only does one tour a day and will spend as much time with you as you would like. Truly a memorable day we will never forget. Thank you again Linda and Scott
My husband and I have traveled extensively all over the world. I must say Darren will always be remembered as a favorite. His knowledge and passion goes well beyond expectations. He is engaging giving a tour that takes you back to that period. I can’t say enough about the wonderful experience that he presented to us. Thank you Darren for sharing your love of the Knights of Templar and so much more. Linda and Scott
Darren provided a brilliant insight into not only the Templars of Portugal but also the history of Portugal. He was the perfect guide, heaped with information and knowledge that he imparted with enthusiasm, humour and professionalism. We were a party of 8 and nothing was too much trouble. We couldn’t recommend Darren and Templar Knights Tours more highly. With huge thanks.
Darren gave us a great day. His knowledge is exceptional
We've been reading about the Knights Templar for years, but nothing prepared my wife Carol and me for what it felt like to actually stand inside the Charola with Darren Keohane as our guide. That moment — walking into the sixteen-sided rotunda, modeled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, surrounded by faded frescoes and gilded statuary glowing under the Byzantine dome — is one Carol and I still talk about. Darren didn't just tell us what we were looking at; he made us feel why the Templars built it that way, what it meant to stand where Grand Masters once stood eight hundred years ago. There's a difference between visiting a monument and understanding it, and Darren closes that gap completely. What struck us most was how much Darren genuinely loves this history. It isn't a rehearsed script for him — you can tell within minutes that this is a man who has spent years digging into the Templars, the Order of Christ, and the layers of myth and fact that surround Tomar, and he can't wait to share it. He has this incredible gift for stopping mid-stride to point out something we absolutely would have walked right past — a carved symbol tucked into a column, the way a particular fresco was positioned to catch the light, a tiny architectural detail in the Manueline stonework that reveals a whole story about the Order's wealth and ambition. Time and time again, he'd say "look closer at this" and open up a detail that turned a beautiful room into something profound. Carol and I have taken plenty of guided tours over the years, and this was different. Darren's passion is contagious, his knowledge is genuinely deep rather than surface-level tourist trivia, and he has a warmth and humor that made the whole day feel like exploring history with a knowledgeable friend rather than sitting through a lecture. By the time we left the Charola, we understood not just the "what" of the Templars in Tomar, but the "why" — and that's rare. If you're even remotely curious about the Knights Templar, do not see Tomar without Darren. It will completely change how you experience the Convent of Christ. — Wayne and Carol
Our guide Darren was extremely knowledgeable and welcomed tough questions. I appreciate that he has really done his homework, is certified in the subject and could distinguish between folklore/false information and tell us was is truly documented history and what is just speculative. He took our time with us and was very gracious. It was also really nice to have a native English speaker. Very comfortable car and we did not feel rushed. If you want someone who really knows the history and also the best spots in Tomar, this is your guy.
We began at the Gualdim Pais statue for a walking tour through Tomar’s most historic religious sites: the Synagogue, Santa Maria do Olival, St John the Baptist Church, and a charming medieval gift store. The talks were fascinating—covering the history of the Jewish community in Tomar, local myths, tunnels, and chalice traditions. In the evening we enjoyed free time at the Knights Festival. The €5 unlimited‑access ticket was already arranged, making everything seamless. We finished the evening with a Medieval Templar Banquet near Mouchão Park. The atmosphere, costumes, and outdoor setting made it unforgettable. A truly immersive day.
Our recent six-day visit to Tomar with Darren Keohane of Templar Knights Tours was an outstanding experience from beginning to end. As members of OCMTH, we were particularly interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the Knights Templar, the foundation of Tomar and the Order of Christ. Darren brought that history to life with knowledge, enthusiasm and a genuine respect for the subject. Rather than simply reciting dates and names, he connected the architecture, landscape and people behind each site. At the Convent of Christ, Tomar Castle and the Charola, he explained how the complex developed from a Templar stronghold into the headquarters of the Order of Christ. His interpretation helped us understand the spiritual, military and political importance of the site, as well as the symbolism that can easily be missed without an experienced guide. Our visits to Santa Maria do Olival, the medieval synagogue, the historic centre of Tomar, the Pegões Aqueduct and Almourol Castle were equally informative. Darren placed each location within the wider story of medieval Portugal, showing how the Templars helped defend and shape the young kingdom. One of Darren’s greatest strengths is his ability to distinguish documented history from later legend. He never allowed an entertaining story to replace the evidence, but he presented the facts in a lively and accessible way. His knowledge is extensive, yet his tours never feel like a lecture. He was also generous with his time, patient with questions and attentive to the interests of our group. Over six days, he gave us a far richer appreciation of Tomar and its Templar heritage than we could ever have gained by visiting the monuments alone. For anyone with an interest in the Knights Templar, the Order of Christ, medieval Portugal or the history of Tomar, we would strongly recommend Darren and Templar Knights Tours. His expertise transformed an already remarkable destination into a memorable historical journey.
A profound, thorough and insightful journey into the heart of Templar Portugal. History cannot be understood unless it is told well. Here, Darren excels in telling the Templar story. With a value far exceeding the cost, history came to life before my eyes in exploring the pivotal sights which shaped how Portugal is today. Approachable and knowledgeable, a couple of days has given me the foundations to the epic tale of Gualdim Pais, but has eagerly whet my appetite to come back for more. I cannot wait enough for the next visit!
Darren is extremely knowledgeable about the Templars and their history and influence. He can talk to all levels of people and make it understandable. Truly a learning experience. Even though the castle was closed we visited Almoural followed by the Convent of Christ. One member of our group is blind and he did very well at guiding and helping him “visualize” the castle and convent.
Darren was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the Knights and specifically the history as it relates to the area. I would highly recommend him for someone who wants an in-depth historical tour.
Great tour! Darren made it very interesting with his thorough knowledge and passion for the subject. We particularly liked that he was specific about what facts are known, what information is thought to be true but not proven and what might be romanticized for the sake of a good story.
Darren was a fabulous guide for our tour of Knights Templar sites. Because the castle in Tomar is closed for renovations, he drove us to Almoural Castle instead. He has an amazing fund of knowledge about the Knights and the history of Portugal, and teaches with an infectious enthusiasm. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour!
We had a fantastic tour with Darren! He is an expert historian on the Templar Knights and communicates succinctly and in a pleasant manner. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Darren and would highly recommend this tour to others! Also, Darren is a very safe driver, was prompt, and has an engaging personality. Darren embodies everything one would want from their guide and a tour.
Darren gave us the best 2 days we had in Portugal! On the first day, we visited Tomar Castle and convents and several other sites around Tomar as well as a drive to Almourol Castle. We asked to add a tour of a winery, so he arranged a visit Casal das Freiras in the afternoon. Rita, took us around her family farm, explained the history of the property before her family became the owner's generations ago, growing and making wine and olive oil, then we had the BEST wine in Portugal with a meat and cheese board which had estate made jams too! Darren has extensive knowledge of the Templars and Order of Christ which gave an interesting layer to Tomar's history that was fascinating. The second day started with lunch at a locally owned restaurant with amazing food. Then off to Sintra with a stop in Obidos. Darren walked the walls and streets of the medieval city with us, and we even found Templar markings on a medieval church! Darren went above and beyond to show us the sites and history of Tomar and areas around Tomar!
This was an amazing experience!! Darren was so knowledgeable! He pulled all of history and the story of the Templars and pulled it all together. He customized our experience so that was incredible. Such a great person to learn from!! Www.templarknightstours.com
THIS is the guide and tour company you want! Darren has so much knowledge of the Knights Templar and the history of Tomar and Portugal. He has a great ability to pass on all his knowledge in a way that makes it understandable and enjoyable. It was a fun tour that is adaptable; ours went to several sites. Darren handled entry fees to sites, so we paid him once and were done; so easy!
Templar Knights Tours offers an absolutely outstanding experience in the historic “Home of the Templars.” From start to finish, everything was thoughtfully organized and tailored to the group’s interests and activity level, making the entire day both engaging and effortless. Our guide, Darren (Chief Tour Guide), is truly exceptional. His deep well of knowledge brings the history of the region to life, blending solid historical facts with just the right touch of myth and mystery to keep every moment fascinating and memorable. His storytelling makes you feel fully immersed in the world of the Knights Templar. The itinerary was superb, including Almourol Castle, the Church of Santa Maria de Olivais, the impressive aqueduct, and the undeniable highlight—the magnificent Convento do Cristo. Having entry fees handled by the guide made access to each site seamless and stress-free, allowing us to simply enjoy the experience. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking, including uneven and historic terrain that quite literally dates back centuries, so comfortable footwear is essential. The boat ride to Almourol Castle was a real highlight in itself, offering stunning views of the fortress rising from the river. Boarding and disembarking the small boat adds a bit of adventure, but Darren ensures everything goes smoothly and safely. We spent around five incredible hours with Darren, though it easily could have been an all-day experience given how much there is to see, learn, and absorb. This tour is a perfect blend of history, adventure, and storytelling—highly recommended for anyone interested in Portugal’s Templar heritage.
We highly, highly recommend the Templar Knights tour—it was truly one of the highlights of our visit to Portugal. Darren takes you on an immersive journey through centuries of Templar history, starting at the almoural castle and weaving stories/history that bring the past vividly to life all the way to Christ Cathedral. His depth of knowledge is incredible, but what really stands out is how engaging and passionate he is - he doesn’t just share facts, he tells the story in a way that makes you feel part of it. You come away with such a richer understanding of the Templars and the historical significance of Tomar. Every stop along the way feels meaningful, and Darren’s insights add layers you simply wouldn’t get exploring on your own. We honestly wish we had planned more time in Tomar to soak it all in - it’s one of those places that lingers with you. Which just means… we’ll absolutely have to come back!!!
Excellent tour with Darren. He took additional time to show us sites given inaccessibility of some of the castle due to impact of weather event. Very knowledgeable, entertaining.
Darren is an excellent guide. His knowledge of the Templar Knights, Tomar history and Portugal’s history was superb. We learned not only about the Castle and the Convent of Christ but also visited Almoural Castle. If I could, I would give this tour more than five stars. Do not miss this tour!
Great tour of the Templar sites with Darren! He was extremely knowledgeable and also able to tell a good story, which is essential. When we visited the castle and some parts of the convent of Christ were closed but he kept finding ways to keep things interesting. Darren drove us to see other fortifications and sites of interest to illustrate the history and myths around the templars. He had a lot of local knowledge of the sites that we would not have appreciated in a larger group. Highly recommended.
Darren provided the history of the Templar factually with some solid information. Due to recent storm the Castle & Convent was closed on Feb 26 so he brought us to Almoural Castle while providing the ground information for the completion of our tour on Feb 27 when the Convent opened. Darren was a wealth of knowledge and shared it in a casual manner over coffee, while driving and touring. Definitely worthwhile for Templar history fans.
Darren did an excellent job. He is very knowledgeable. We were able to see the sites as well as understand the history of the Templars. Do not hesitate to go on this tour, it is well worth it.1
Wonderful private tour of the Convent and other sites. One of best tours ever. Darren was deeply knowledgeable and entertaining!
Darren is a brilliant guide. He took us to the obvious wonderful places in the Convent but also some hidden corners. He’s truly expert in the history of the Knights Templar, Tomar and Portugal. He’s truly expert carefully distinguishes between myth and provable facts, so one can understand the stories but also what is historically accurate. All told, a fabulous private tour!
How lucky to have found the knowledgable Darren, who brought the world of the Templars alive. Tomar is the entrance and the very place to start the journey. Thank you for conveying much of your passion.
We are a large group of medieval history enthusiast friends who holiday together, with a wide range of ages and equally wide range of mobility issues. Darren helped us in advance of our week-long trip to Portugal by supporting our planning for Tomar and our transfers to and from Lisbon. Darren assisted us in choosing restaurants, transport, and places to visit. Darren repeatedly went beyond our expectations, for example, organising a birthday cake for one of our knights. We were already quite knowledgeable about Templars, and Darren's in-depth knowledge about Tomar and the region's churches and castles really made the holiday just right for us. We recommend Darren's Templar tours, whether you know nothing about the Templars and want to learn, or you are a Medieval history academic looking to see the sites you've studied. Darren fit in completely with our group and was very adept and patient at adapting to our needs. To ‘sum up’, Darren provided a unique Tomar Templar guided experience. The images and video are a visual experience of our visit to Tomar. On behalf of the Sauniere Society Portugal 2025 (Hamilton, Alys, and Jayne), we send a knightly thank-you to Darren at Templar Knights Tours.
Darren is very knowledgeable. Explain in details every single detail of the monuments. respectful and respect the tourist pace.
Darren provided a capsulating narrative of the Knights Templar in Portugal with special focus on Tomar. The tour was personalized to our walking needs and captured the essence of of the Templars. Darren is a wealth of historical facts and myths plus adds some knowledge only.a person with several.years of research on-site could acquire. My wife and I highly recommend Darren to anyone wishing for a relaxed and insightful tour of Tomar's history.
Darren was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic student of the history of Knights Templar. Highly recommend Darren’s services and again, appreciate what private tours offer as a far better experience than large group tours.
Darren picked us up at the hotel, right on time. The tour of the Covent was Christ was full of history and insightful. We would have been lost without Darren s knowledge. We highly recommend it.
Darren is an amazing guide. His knowledge of the Knights Templar is extensive and he knows locations off the beaten track. He went out of his way to source eateries and transport, even when it wasn't part of his tour package. Hes also a really nice chap.I will book him again for next year.
This was the trip of a lifetime, all thanks to Darren. He is highly knowledgeable, very accomodating and best of all ....excellent company. I will be back.
