The tour is fully self-guided — no guide, no fixed start time, just your group and the city. The Jardim da Manga itself opens the hunt — a lemon-yellow Renaissance cloister-fountain said to have been sketched on a sleeve, and one of Portugal's oddest monuments. Riddles start right at its arches. The Mosteiro de Santa Cruz follows, guarding the tombs of Portugal's first two kings. Trivia pays its respects to Afonso Henriques before moving on. Then the route climbs the student-worn streets to the Paço das Escolas, the hilltop courtyard where black-caped students have graduated for seven centuries, with the Joanina Library and bell tower crowning the view. Around two hours of slopes and scholarship covers it. The leaderboard posts the final grades — no resits.

A fun way to see the city without the structure of a tour guide. I wanted to break up the amount of structured tours so opted for this for my husband and I. We got to additional areas of the city off the beaten path, got some exercise walking from the old town up to the university and a little competition to see who get get the best score.

We stopped in Coimbra on our way from Porto to Evora. We ended up doing only part of the tour because we wanted to get on the road, but what we did was fun and what we saw was nice. App worked great.
