Most don't know that Thai cuisine is highly regional. The hilly North is less green curry and pad Thai and more jungle herbs and barbecued meats. Board our private songtheaw truck and get whisked away to some of the best street eats and markets in the city. We don't want to spoil the surprise, but prepare to drool over ladles of creamy khao soi curry with crispy noodles, chilli jam and pickled greens, spatchcocked chickens sizzling over hot charcoal and served with zingy som tum papaya salads and sticky rice, and lemongrass-stuffed sai oua sausages among more than a dozen tastings you'd struggle to find alone.
The tour concludes in the trendy Nimmanhaemin district not far from the central hotels in the city. Enjoy local hospitality and meet new friends along the way. End the tour armed with the knowledge you'll need to continue eating street food across Thailand.

It was a really great experience, and we got to try sooo much food! Our tour guide was Aim, she was super knowledgeable, well prepared and everything went very smoothly. She even brought containers of curry spices for us to see and smell. Really educational experience too, not only about the food but the culture and history of northern Thailand and all the cross cultural influence. We left absolutely stuffed with new foods and facts, well worth the time and money.
This was my second tour with A Chef’s Tour and it was just as good as the first. I attended the morning tour and it had a couple different things compared to the evening tour. The Khao Soi was delicious and was my favourite dish.
Had a wonderful time! Moui was a great tour guide so passionate about chaing mai and its food and very knowledgeable about the food history. We tried the best traditional foods that chaing mai had to offer. Everything was delicious! Thank you for such a wonderful time and all the education provided. Walked away with some new food favorites!
Genuinely my favorite part of my 2-week trip. Getting to see local spots that are hidden gems to the point where the restaurant names aren’t on the map. Getting to talk so in-depth about the history, culture, and ingredients of each food. Talking about the owners and their life stories about how they established their restaurants and their histories. Learning about the political history and what it means for that particular’s culture food and influence to be here and why. It was genuinely a surreal, beautiful, intimate, and delicious experience.
Food connects culture through the loving kindness of the guide and the people of the Chiang Mai food scene. We we're the only tourists in virtually every spot where we ate. Couldn't have asked for more!
Fantastic food tour! We visited 4 restaurants and a food market, and tasted at least 20 dishes & snacks. And they were all delicious! Our guide, Muay (I might be misspelling that), was great about explaining not just what we were eating, but the history behind the food. A great way to immerse yourself in the city and the culture. Definitely recommend!
If you want to get off the beaten path, book this unique experience as part of your visit to Chiang Mai! Every stop on this tour introduces you to authentic regional Thai foods using ingredients that you won't find in other parts of the country or world. Our guide (Moui) also provided valuable cultural context to understand the origins for the dishes we enjoyed. From unique cooking techniques, multi-generational restaurant spots and a delightful assortment of dishes, you will find lots to love about this food tour!
It was amazing. The food was authentic and wonderful. Our guide, Moui was knowledgeable and personable. We had a great time!
Great food tour! We got to try a lot of different food and you won’t be left hungry. Our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable about the dishes we tried. Highly recommend this!
This was such an amazing tour of the culinary treasures of Chiang Mai. We were brought to restaurants and food stalls that tourists would never have gone to or known about. The tour guide also was great and very knowledgeable. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
This was one of the best food tours we have been on. It was well organized and featured authentic, local, well established restaurants featuring foods unique to Northern Thailand. Our guide was helpful, informative and spoke fluent English. This is our second tour with this company and we greatly enjoyed them both.
The tour was very well organized and we got to try a lot of different foods! There was a lot to eat, so you won’t be left hungry. Our guide was great and gave us information about the crusine all throughout the tour. Definitely recommend this!
We did the tour with Aim. She took us to so many amazing spots, there was so much food. Lots of different specialties that we haven’t had before. Going around in the red truck with a driver means you get to try loads of spots. Aim was really knowledgable and taught us about the history of the area and also lots about the food itself. We had some of the best food we’d had all trip! Highly recommend!
Tasty and definitely worth the money! I recommend booking this early on during your stay in Chiang Mai, so you get to learn about the Northern cuisine. You get to try so many things you otherwise wouldn’t buy and learn more about the popular dishes like Khao Soi. Our guide explained the history and traditions around the dishes very well. We were transported from place to place by a private driver and tasted a well curated set of both savory and sweet foods. Come hungry!
Great food tour. Our guide, Maoi, was very informative and gave our group a very interesting food history of Northern Thailand. We had 15 tastings of different foods and visited some amazing restaurants. I highly recommend this food tour.
We met Moui at the temple as agreed. There were 6 in our group and she introduced us to each other. This gave the morning a great friendly vibe. I had been expecting very small tasting bites. On this tour we had lots of food, with full portions including khao soi, sai oua, larb, crispy pork and other delicacies. Moui was such an interesting guide. She was knowledgeable about the food producers and their restaurants. She blended the history of Northern Thai food with Thai history in a very engaging way. Absolutely recommend this tour
Our tour guide took us to so many interesting places. So many local foods were tried, and the highlight was the market at the end of the tour. Our guide picked and chose a large number of local delicacies that we would never have tried on our own. Some required mixing three ingredients which she had picked up in little plastic bags from the various vendors. There was just one item that we didn’t like (the dried crickets and dried silk worms), but all the rest were really good . So many unusual fruits, vegetables and other foods throughout the tour that I have never seen in the States. As long as you go in with an open mind on different foods, you’ll have a great time and be quite full at the end of the tour. Again, our guide was both knowledgeable and also quite humorous. We would recommend.
Just book it!! An amazing amount of food and so much to learn about Northern Thai cuisine. It will make you aware that there is much more to Thai food than Pad Thai!! Which isnt even real Thai food by the way! Our guide Moui was well organized and everything went smoothly. So much food at several restaurants and ended at a local market where she made us a picnic!
I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in sampling Thai dishes. Aim was an excellent tour guide and full of knowledge. The dishes were delicious and don’t eat ahead of time as there is tons of food to sample!
Excellent Guide. Great Food. We visited a number of spots and each was extremely tasty. Best Khao Soi ever. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Chiang Mai.
10/10 would recommend! So much food! Come hungry. Tried so many dishes that I never would have found on my own! Moui (Our guide) was FANTASTIC! Knowledgeable about the food, the history of the city, the culture. And very cool to ride from spot to spot in a songthaew. Would absolutely book again! This is a must-do!
Moui was very knowledgeable and could be understood clearly. We had a fun food tour and ended with happy tummies.
Amazing food tour! Moui was so knowledgeable, explaining the dishes along with all the culture and history surrounding them. Visiting the market is a particularly great experience. Come hungry and you’ll be stuffed by the end!
The food was amazing and definitely different from food on tour in Bangkok. Selection of food is excellent as it includes dishes original for Lanna kingdom, dishes created here by Chinese migrants, some Myanmar and some Central Thailand dishes. Visiting local market is great experience by itself too. Transportation between places via songtheaw truck is convenient and adds to authenticity. The only disadvantage was that i was alone on tour, so i definitely ate too much... and also got food for my dinner. So bring a friend for tour! :)
Great experience in Chiang Mei. Our guide, Mouri, was terrific. Her knowledge of how the dishes are made, the history behind the food, and the stories of the restaurateurs is extensive and adds to the fun of tasting all these delicacies. Would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about northern Thai food and its history. This is a great opportunity to try multiple dishes and decide on your favorites!
Amazing experience, got to try such great food with a tour guide that was so knowledgeable and lovely. So worth the money!!
The number of distinct tastes that you get to experience on this tour is truly astounding! We visited six different restaurants or markets and there were over 20 items that I was able to try. I've done other food tours in the past, but I have never been able to try so many dishes, as I did in this one. There might have been one item that I didn't care for, but with everything else that I tried, I would have been so content making that my entire meal. One tip. Pace yourself. I ate too much at the first few stops and by the end, I was relegated to giving each dish just a bite or two. I recommend this tour with every taste bud I own! The Crispy Pork Skin was my absolute favorite!
The tour was amazing we experienced delicious tastings from several restaurants. All were different and totally amazing.
THE BEST FREAKING FOOD TOUR! My husband and I booked this tour and learned so much! If you're someone who loves to cook or learn about influences on Thai culture/food, this IS the tour for you. Seriously! We tried things we wouldn't have known to try and learned about new dishes we now call our favorites. We live in SoCal and while there's great Thai food here, the spots they took us to were unmatched! Our tour guide Muay (sp?) was incredible. So knowledgeable, funny, and answered all our annoying questions. This was our favorite tour we did AND while we booked a completely separate Michelin walking tour, we ended up canceling that one because we had already tried the same dishes from this tour! If you have limited time in Thailand, this is the tour to book if you're a foodie. You won't regret it! Thank you for making this an unforgettable experience for me and my husband! We thoroughly enjoyed it!!
What a great way to experience local food culture. Our guide shared history of the food's introduction into Thai culture that was very interesting.
Amazing culinary as well as history/cultural learning adventure. The food was amazing and our guide was well prepared and very informative. Would 100% recommend.
We had a wonderful noon food tour with Moui who was very knowledgeable about the regional cuisine and how it was influenced by adjacent countries. She was also very sweet and thoughtful, just a really nice person. We traveled from one stop to another by a songthaew which was great fun and tried at least 15 different dishes. We loved almost all of them! Our last stop was a local market where we were able to try unusual fruits and homemade snacks and sweets. One of the best food tours we have ever done!
The food tour was great. I learned some history of the area and of the food. We are some really good food. It is a lot of food, so come hungry!
We had a great morning tour, thoroughly enjoyed everything we tried. We met our lovely guide at Wat Lok Moli then travelled by small red bus/taxi to each of our food destinations. We loved trying all of the Northern Thai and Shan dishes, from water buffalo laab to tea leaf salad, everything we tried was great. Lots of things to try and plentiful; so go with an empty stomach! Our guide was thoughtful, caring and had some great facts and stories to share. We really enjoyed her company and that of the other travellers on the tour (a lovely small group). The highlight for us was the walk through the market, picking up tasty treats and having a picnic at the end trying everything. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this tour.
Probably the best food tour I’ve ever been on. Amazing experience for those who are serious foodies that want to try authentic Thai food at places outside the old town that you’d never know about!! Not for picky eaters, and come HUNGRY! Muay was so lovely. We had a really awesome time! I will def be recommending to my friends
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The food was authentic and varied. You get a lot of dishes for your money too. Would highly recommend.
The tour was terrific and so was our guide, Moui. We had our own ‘red bus’ to drive us from place to place and we were told about local northern (Lanna) customs and lifestyle along the way, as well as the history of Thai food evolution (eg. frying was introduced by the Chinese). The food was great, especially the khoa soi(!), and I really liked that whatever we didn’t finish at each stop was given to our driver to take home (very responsible & thoughtful!). A wonderful experience!
Great education on the tour in Chiang Mai. Didn’t like all the foods but that’s my issue; and some of it was awesome. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Fantastic gastronomic panorama of North Thailand cooking. Degustation of many local dishes together with expert comments from our guide : a fun and very knowledgeable local lady. There such a plentiful array of wonderful dishes that it's better to arrive hungry and to try only a couple of mouthfuls of each, especially at the beginning. Visit to a market afterwards to buy spices and ingredients to try at home. I learned a lot about this region’s cooking, really loved it and would definitely recommend this tour.
The food variety is good and the places were local and authentic. We would never have gone to those places or tried as many types of food without this tour, simple because we didn't know of these hidden gems. Our guide Moui kept us entertained with her storytelling of the region's history. A feast for the senses!
This was an amazing food tour. Moui our guide spoke excellent English and was a great source of information. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about her native Northern Thai cuisine. We went on the lunch tour. She brought us around in a local red Thai jeepney so there was minimal walking. Highly recommended.
This was definitely one of the top 3 food tours that I have ever done, anywhere in the world. We were taken to so many amazing and unusual places where foodies like Mark Wien and Anthony Bourdain have gone before, that if you had to put together the knowledge and transportation to visit- it would have taken days! Come with an empty stomach and be prepared to be adventurous!
The tour was very enjoyable. Our guide was very informative. Amazing amount of tastings, super interesting and super tasty. Our guide kept track of time very well. I wish we had more time as we had so many tastings. We loved every dishes. The experience was very good, I would definitely try other chef tours in other countries.
I did the same lunch food tour last year when I came to Chiang Mai for the lantern festival. It was so good that I came back this year and repeat the same food tour as well. We went to five different locations and tried more than 15 different kinds of food. It's hard to believe you could eat that much, even though the tour lasted four hours. Toward the end we all had difficulties to eat more, as delicious as the food was. The last stop was a big farmer's market. We even tried the crickets and the silk worms. So if you always wanted to try them and couldn't sum up the courage, now it's your chance to do it in group! The food choices are diverse, mostly northern Thai. Be careful that it could be really spicy, especially the small chili peppers. The guide was very knowledgable. She told us a lot about the history of those dishes, some were brought in by immigrants. She also answered many cultural questions. She also provided us unlimited bottled water, hand wipes and alcohol spray. The tour is carried out in a Songthaew (a red truck taxi) and the max. number of people in each tour group is eight. When I come back to Chiang Mai next time, I might do it again! In the mean time, I will find "A Chef's Tour" at my other travel destinations.
Absolutely delicious food! Fun to ride in a Songthaew as well. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Chiang Mai. Great to try some Northern Thai specialities.
This was everything we had hoped for. Nobody else booked so we had a private tour to ourselves! It was fun travelling around in the songthaew. But most of all we enjoyed learning about the background and history of the different northern Thai dishes and heading to family run restaurants that we wouldn’t have known about without doing many hours of research online beforehand. And the market tour to finish was fun, in a market with locals. So much food. We had a small breakfast before the tour to make sure we had room, but even that wasn’t needed as we tried so many things. And everything was so delicious.
We did the lunch tour starting at 10am. It was excellent. The food, the background about the food, the info about northern Thailand was all top notch. We have taken many food tours around the world and this was one of the best. Don’t miss it !
This was a very interesting and informative tour! We had already been to several restaurants and markets before taking this tour, but learning the history and the outside influences on Thai culture and food really enriched our understanding. Moui was a great Chef’s Tour guide. She was well- versed and very gracious. We really enjoyed her teaching us about Northern Thai cooking. The market she took us to was fantastic! A must-see cacophony of sights and sounds. My friend had been to Chiang Mai twice before and had never been to this local’s market. We highly recommend taking this tour and Moui as a guide.
I have done a couple of A Chef’s Tours and this one was especially good. The food was amazing, the guide was great and they go ahead with the tour even if there’s only one person on it that particular day/lunchtime. I had a wonderful tour with Moui. Highly recommend!
