Our tour with Gaius (aka Sam) was the highlight of our time in Chester. Funny, enthusiastic, engaging, knowledgeable and considerate were all part of what made the tour so good. Sam truly deserves his crested helmet.

A superb tour with a thoroughly experienced guide. We went with our family including a 9,15 and 18 yr old. They all loved it and enjoyed the sites and the history lessons as well. Strongly recommend
Fantastic our guide (Sam) was very very good. Friendly, knowledgeable really enjoyed the experience
Very good experience, guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of Chester and the Romans
Fantastic tour. Our Roman auxiliary guide was hugely entertaining and incredibly knowledgeable really bringing Deva to life. Would do it all again
Paulus Maximus was a fantastic guide. He was hilariously funny, wonderfully engaging and incredibly knowledgeable. I couldn't recommend this tour more.
Sam was a knowledgeable Roman soldier who was truly interested in Roman history. He had enthusiasm, great stories, and answered all the questions we had. He took us to some fascinating places, including the basement of the Pret A Manger. Who knew Roman walls and columns were right under the businesses we had been shopping in? Very cool!
be prepared for the weather - it can be slippery in some areas , and to climb/descend steep steps several times
Brilliant guide and tour. He made it fun and got the perfect balance for kids and adults.
The Roman Soldier was very pleasant and very informative and happy to answer questions and pose for photos. There is quite a lot of walking and standing while guide is explaining the history of what you are looking at.
Fantastic knowledgeable guide, funny as well. We loved this tour and have learned so much about Roman Chester
Really interesting tour and good value for money. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
Very good. We were the only 2 for the 1430 tour and it was very informative. It rained a bit but it was still enjoyable.
Brilliant tour.. we had Patrick (Paulaus Maximus) showing us around.. very knowledgeable, and he made the information funny as well as educational! Definitely 5 stars!! Well worth the cost. 1.5 hours is enough for what we were shown, and we had a small group of 5. Patrick involved all of us in the tour. Only another 24 years and 364 days until I get my Roman Army Pension!!! Thanks Patrick.. Roman superstar!!
We loved this tour; the guide was fantastic, so knowledgeable and kept it really interesting throughout. Just the right duration and detail - thank you.
Knowledgeable guide. Kept the tour 'clean' enough on Roman history while still keeping it interesting. Only thing better would have been to see some more sites, but I guess you can only see what's there 👍
Excellent experience with a humorous and knowledgeable guide.
Julian was fascinating & knew EVERYTHING about Roman life. He was a pleasure to listen to & kept us amused.
Wear good walking boots. This is a tour not to be missed. You will see so much more of Chester with a Roman Guide. Maximus our guide was really enthusiastic about his subject. That definitely transferred to us. I would definitely do another guided tour and there’s so many to choose from.
Gaius (Sam) was a great guide. Very knowledgeable and spoke loud enough for all to hear. I recommend this tour.
Good insight to Chester. enjoyable tour worth the money and 1:30 is enough time without being too long
An excellent tour with a great guide full of knowledge of roman chester. He made the tour interesting and comical in places. I went with my wheelchair bound mum and he made sure to take care of us and use wheelchair friendly routes. Would 100% recommend
We had a wonderful tour with Gaius (Sam)! Since it was just the two of us, it felt like a fantastic private tour. Gaius is super passionate, highly knowledgeable, and brought the Roman history of Chester to life in such an engaging way that it was a real pleasure to listen to. He answered all our questions effortlessly and even gave us great recommendations for other things to do around town. We were absolutely thrilled, highly recommended! Thanks a lot😁🔥🏺
An informative and enjoyable experience. The guide dressed as a Roman soldier and was excellent with descriptions of what Roman Chester would have been like based on historical findings and he was open to questions. 4 of us on the tour which lasted about 90 mins. A good pace but not rushed.
Wonderful tour, certainly exceeded my expectations. Our guide, Paulus Maximus, (Patrick) was the perfect leader. He was knowledgeable, fluent, articulate, passionate and clearly loved his subject. Dressed as an authentic auxiliary in the Roman legion he led us on a great journey, highlighting not just the physical architectural remains in Chester, but the cultural, political and social aspects of life in the Roman Empire. I live relatively locally and I'm embarrassed that I hadn't previously taken advantage of a brilliant organisation like this to educate and enjoy myself. Fantastic value for money and strongly recommended. Make sure you manage to get Paulus as your guide!
Was great, friendly, informative guide. We were able to see Roman ruins that were not accessible unless on the tour. Lots of great historical information we thoroughly enjoyed our time, esp as the rain stopped!
It was very informative and interesting Patrick did an amazing tour. My grandson really enjoyed it too, loved wearing the helmet for a while too.
Gaius (Sam) was great. Extremely knowledgeable and entertaining and clearly passionate about The Romans and archaeology. He brought the history of the City to life which really enhanced our visit. Thoroughly recommend
I have taken many tours with Viator but this was the best. Our guide Patrick, dressed as a Roman auxiliary soldier, was a mine of information and combined it with great humour, explaining everything with a really personal touch. We got to see areas that were undoubtedly off the usual tourist trail. If you want to know about Roman Chester, we would highly recommend spending time with him. Thank you, Patrick!
Just been on the Roman walking tour in Chester, led by Paolus Maximus (the extraordinarily brilliant Patrick). If you do only one activity during a visit here, do this! It was outstanding in every way. Beyond educational and very entertaining. We were with ten strangers but we all said the same at the end of the tour. We were aged from around 10 years to 70’s and the tour kept us all completely interested. Reviews are superb for a reason. Wonderful, thank you so much.
Ave atque lauda, Gaius! We enjoyed a fabulous tour..Gaius battled against the hordes of musicians to give a thoroughly entertaining and informative walk through Roman Chester. Highly recommended. Now off to the taverna..
Fantastic tour , loved it. The guide was extremely knowledgeable
Gaius was an amazing guide, brought Roman Chester to life in an engaging way. His gloria was clearly demonstrated.
Fantastic walking tour of Roman Chester with our guide Patrick. He is so knowledgeable and entertaining and his enthusiasm for his subject adds to the enjoyment. Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Excellent talk and Guide. Huge amount of interest and information skilfully and professionally presented. Saw many parts of Chester would otherwise have missed. Give that man a pay rise!!
You can know a little or a lot before you go but you will always understand and learn. I grew up in Chester and we learnt Roman history at school but still it revealed lots of new things to me. My daughter, just about to study classics at uni, loved it. There were funny bits and props in his bag to look at. He tailors it, so if there are young children he does stuff for them, if everyone is an adult he will mention the brothels outside the city walls visited by Roman soldiers. He plays the character of a soldier, dressed for the part, and talks about Roman daily life.
I really enjoyed the Roman Chester walking tour today. Patrick was incredibly knowledgeable and his enthusiasm for the history of Chester came across throughout the whole tour. He explained everything in an interesting and engaging way, while always allowing plenty of time for questions. What surprised me most was how much I learned about a city I’ve known for most of my life. I went to Queen’s Park High School and walked through Chester every day to get there throughout my school years. Despite having walked these streets countless times, Patrick pointed out so many things I had either never noticed or had walked straight past without understanding their significance. It genuinely made me look at Chester differently. I was also particularly impressed by how Patrick interacted with a very enthusiastic young participant on the tour. The young person was clearly passionate about the subject and would occasionally interrupt to share their own knowledge or ask questions. Patrick never appeared impatient or dismissive. He gave them the time and attention to finish what they wanted to say, responded properly to their questions and encouraged their enthusiasm, while still managing to keep the tour moving and make sure everyone remained involved. I thought he handled it with a great deal of patience, empathy and professionalism. Patrick clearly knows his subject inside out, but it was his enthusiasm and ability to engage with people that made the tour particularly enjoyable. I learned far more than I expected and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’d highly recommend it, even if you’re from Chester and think you already know the city!
Fantastic experience form our guide Patrick, AKA Paulus Maximus He was as informative as he was humourous. He took us to hidden gems as well as the more well known places of Roman Chester and made us feel like we were in the first century AD.
Interesting, informative and very enjoyable guided tour of Roman Chester. Our tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and personable answering any and all of our questions.
Excellent guide with interesting stories, Petrus Something...us (Patrik). Despite of the rain me and my wife enjoyed the walking trip. Very strong recommendation if you go to Chester (which is a very pretty town).
Patrick (Paulus Maximus) was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, despite the wet weather! Highly recommended if you’re into history.
We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour, Patrick our tour guide brought a wealth of knowledge and humour. Despite the storm, the heavy rain didn’t dampen the experience. Would highly recommend From the Stokies
Great tour! Really explained not only Roman history, but what happened after the Romans left. "Gaius" was wonderful.
The Roman Tour was excellent in every way. Sam was an interesting, knowledgeable, friendly and amusing guide. We learnt so much about the Romans in Great Britain and he brought the past to life. We had a wonderful time and would recommend the tour to everyone.
Good experience explaining life as a Roman legionary in Chester and how they would have lived, earned there living and fought
Great fun and really informative tour - Our Roman soldier guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. Much more than just a tour - lots of Roman history and a glimpse of the archaeology which is not normally seen.
Great experience for my 10 yr old son who has a love of history. Very knowledgable guide with some fascinating stories.
We had Gaius. He was good but we were very disappointed as desription said group size would be max 15 but there were at least 30 on our tour so it was harder to hear the guide and very distracting. We would not have booked this tour if it had advertised as being this size.
Genuinely the tour was fascinating the guide was so into character throughout the whole time and made the trip feel so engaging and fun at the same time, not to mention the fact that he is beyond passionate about what he does which my girlfriendand I could feel theoughout the whole tour. I cannot recommend this enough for people who are visiting Chester cause it really unlocks a new view of how historically important this city is in a fun and engaging way.
The tour itself is very thorough and enjoyable. The soldier gets into character and makes it fun and interactive. Very good value. The only downside is the amplified sound of various buskers along the route. Whether we were on the tour or not the noise is awful. The guide had to really shout to make himself heard.
