Intercontinental Kunming By Ihg

Beautiful, sprawling property. Have to walk long distances, from lobby to rooms and to dining facilities. Very handicap unfriendly. But what made the place inhospitable for me is the absence anyone who can communicate in English. Even with Google Translate, we struggled. As it is the Intercontinental, an international brand, i expected a higher level of at least communicable English or any other language for that matter. My mistake? Perhaps. My advise to future travellers, get a translator if you can afford one.

Beautiful hotel with so many amenities like great kids club, with each room booked you get a free picture taking session on their beautiful property (free traditional costumes, too), huge breakfast spread, and there was live music at the hotel bar the night we stayed. Only minor downside is that parts of the room felt a bit dated, but didn’t detract from the experience. The other downside is because the campus is so big, it can be slightly confusing which elevator to use because you could end up on the right floor but wrong building!

We arrived late and tired and were marched about 7km to our room only to find it reeked of smoke. It took forever to get a new room. This lost hour was not properly compensated. A hotel that doesn’t check their rooms deserves 1 star. Be warned that this place is gigantic and if you want to go anymore in the hotel it’s a long long walk. Management are dismal. Most uncaring, unaccommodating and perfunctory staff I’ve encountered. This hotel is a blight on the IC brand.

Room: A bit outdated & design is not practical for sharing. The glass door in the toilet & shower and dual entry doors makes it hard for travellers to share the bathroom / toilet. Service: Reception/IHG rewards & club international service staff are good. But we can’t say the same for the breakfast area staff (hygiene of the kitchen staff needs improvement). Location: it’s like a resort, no eateries or mall within walking distance.
