Pros: upgraded room Cons: 1) Upgraded room reeked of tobacco despite it being non-smoking room. Allowed us to change to another room immediately which did not smells tobacco initially, but the smell came at midnight - could be from the centralized AC. 2) Temperature cannot be adjusted by the AC temperature panel in the room because it is controlled by centralized AC system - but no staff inform us beforehand. Unbeknownst to me, I lowered the temperature using the AC panel in my room as the room was warm, but it didn't cool down even after I waited for 1 hour. Called the reception and they sent a technician. The technician confirmed aircon was working fine. I showed him how I lowered the temperature by pressing the downward arrow on my room's AC control panel, just like how we normally do at other hotels. He brusquely said that's not the right way, and showed me a complicated way (about 5 steps) to adjust the temperature - to override the DEFAULT centralized temperature. Technician sarcastically said that normally people feel fine with the default temperature but apparently I have "special needs"and prefers lower temperature for the room. He commented he was wearing thicker clothing than me but he didn't feel warm at all. So, if you have "special needs" like me, not pleased with the default temperature (and no one tells you beforehand ), you may call for the technician to give you a crash course to learn how to override the centralized AC temperature - sprinkled with sarcasm and rudeness. Oh, and after the technician left, the room cooled down a little, and went back to being warm again.

A reliable and very convenient hotel in a strategic location. It sits beside several larger international chain hotels that can easily cost two to three times more, which makes this Holiday Inn excellent value for money. Although the property is slightly dated, it is close to shops, restaurants and a large supermarket just one block away. Pickups and drop-offs are easy, Didi is readily available, and many places in central Kunming are within walking distance. I was travelling alone with my child, and we were especially grateful for the unexpected room upgrade. It was a thoughtful surprise and made our stay much more comfortable. Breakfast offers a wide selection, though the quality is slightly below average. Still, it is sufficient to start the day. Overall, this was a great place to begin our Yunnan trip and spend our first few days in Kunming. For the location, convenience and value, I would highly recommend it and would gladly stay here again.
Service was fine, but the room (a nonsmoking room) reeked of tobacco. After asking to change rooms, the new room also smelled of tobacco and had visible mould. Stayed one night.
"Wonderful family stay at Holiday Inn Kunming City Center – Highly recommended!" Recently spent 3 days and 2 nights at the Holiday Inn Kunming City Center by IHG, and couldn’t be happier with our choice. The hotel’s location is convenient, and the staff made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. A special shout-out to the front desk team – several of them speak very good English, which made check-in/out and communication so much easier for an international traveler like us. One of my favorite little luxuries was the free coffee machine in the lobby, offering Americano and Espresso. As a coffee lover, that was a real treat! On our second night, we were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary plate of fresh fruits in our room – a thoughtful gesture that made the stay feel even more personal. Now, a small note for those who might need self-service laundry: it was temporarily unavailable due to renovations. However, the hotel does provide room laundry services, so it wasn’t a major issue. For Muslim travelers, I highly recommend visiting the Shuncheng Mosque area. There, you’ll find a great variety of halal food options – from meals to cakes, snacks, and bakeries. It was wonderful to learn that the Chinese Muslim community there are of the 'Hui' ethnicity, which added a meaningful cultural layer to our trip. Overall, I left Kunming feeling completely satisfied – great hotel, friendly service, and thoughtful amenities. Would definitely stay here again!
My partner and I had an incredible stay here! It is a beautiful hotel - large and well equipped bedroom, delicious breakfast buffet, well positioned in city centre and very friendly + helpful staff. It was our anniversary and we are very grateful that they made it extra special for us. If coming to Kunming, strongly recommend staying here!
