Great food, great info about Cape Town!! This food tour could not have been better. It gave us a chance to experience Cape Town in a totally different way. Would highly recommend it!

Bulelani did a fabulous job introducing us to Cape Town and South Africa through the food he had is taste and the history he conveyed to us with wonderful conversation and stories.
It is a lot of fun…Parinita our guide took us to some local places to sample a variety of foods at two different stops. In between eating she would show us the neighborhood and places of historic nature and explained the context behind them. All in all we enjoyed the few hours we spent with her…the food was good and she is a delight
Gilbert was very knowledgeable and explained the history that was relevant to the food we ate. We overran the allotted time but Gilbert didn’t seem to mind
Though the guide was adequate, this food tour left much to be desired. As we’ve been to some great local food tours in other countries. Ridiculously overpriced. Guide provided local food (marginal) from his neighborhood. Also ate from local stall (same dish throughout Capetown and fried fast food joint.
Due to circumstances outside their control the tour did not happen. Tour guide had car trouble and couldn’t make it. Viatour refunded the full amount no questions no hassles. Excellent service
Although our guide was very nice, the value for the tour was not there. We went to 3 places and had 2 dishes at the first place a curry and appetizer, 2 deserts at the second, one amounted to a half a donut each and the last was a plate of food with 2 beers. We had to buy our own water in the tour which was necessary with the curry. I would recommend going to a restaurant and requesting local dishes.
Tastings is a bit of a misnomer. We had 10 full meals or platters at several local eateries. All of the food was sensational. And our tour guide was an obvious local favorite. He was so knowledgeable about both the city and its history. We had a great time.
Our guide was great- friendly, funny and very knowledgeable. Thats where it ends…. Food experience was awful! First taste was a baguette thing with either meat or chips with salad- it was very poor quality and salad consisted of a slice of limp cucumber. The chips were also raw! One stop was awful fish + chips and another a cup of very ordinary rooibos tea. Went to a hawker centre which had amazing choices of food incl indian, turkish etc but we were only allowed a falafel wrap between 4 of us! I do NOT NOT recommend this tour and it is so so so overpriced. Very disappointing as we have had some amazing food tours over the years in different cities via viator.
Great experience rain or shine! Great to have a local guide. Thank you! The food was great and the guide was very friendly and knowledgeable!
If I could rank this any lower than 1 star I would. Worst tour of my life as a foodie that has done many good tours around the world. Good reviews for this tour were for another guide. Guide was unprofessional and unorganized with a total of 7 tastings not 10. Felt like he was looking for the cheapest places to find food and gave no explanation to store just that locals ate the item. Cheaper than McDonald quality and cheap food. Guide ate leftovers. Took us to a horribly unsafe neighborhood and I was assaulted and robbed by a local. Guide put us in danger and all locals were appalled he took us to someplace so unsafe. Do not book!!!! He has been reported but no confirmation he was fired from Viator.
A fantastic host, Gilbert. Very informative, interesting and a fun way to see the city and enjoy a more local experience.
We had a wonderful few hours with Bulelani who was a brilliant guide getting us to chomp our way under the skin of cape town. An excellent mix of history and modern culture while also being great company. Highly recommended.
If you are a foodie, this is a must do tour whilst you are in Cape Town. Gilbert is an excellent guide and truly it felt like we were just hanging out with a group of friends, learning about the local South African food as well as culture and history. We met up at city hall and was already introduced to the Nelson Mandela statue. We walked around the city eating at places we would never have gone if we were not with Gilbert. We went to 5-6 different eateries and ate/drank about 15 different food items. All of it was just so tasty. One of the highlights was the malva pudding that Gilbert made himself. Because he brought us walking through the whole city, we really got to see and experience the place like locals do. The people were so friendly. We spent time walking off what we ate which was needed. The gardens was lovely and we also got to spot the white squirrels. We were very lucky to have gotten Gilbert as our tour guide. He was so passionate and knowledgeable. Also with a good sense of humour. What was better was for the food we couldn’t finish, Gilbert did not hesitate to pack it up and to give it to the homeless people who came up to us. Highly recommend this tour!
Our experience with Daryl was delicious and informative. Not only did he let us example authentic food from his amazing country, he share the history that went with it.
Our time with the very knowledgable and personable Chris was terrific. Aside from an introduction of South African foods he gave us an excellent perspective on history and culture.
Darryl is the absolute best tour guide I’ve ever had in all of my touring all over the world. He was wonderfully educated, listen to the places we had already been and set up a tour for us that allowed us to go to places not only we’ve never been, but that we had never expected to go. I can highly recommend him to anyone coming to South Africa!
A disappointment, unfortunately! We only visited 4 places, and one of these was only a bun and another just a can of beer (dutch att first, but they switched to a localized brew when I pointed this out). The guide didn't have very much to say about the food and the various local culture group. The tour ended after only 2 hours. We did not visit company gardens, nor return to the starting point. She took us to places we probably wouldn't have visited ourself, which was nice, but in all, very expensive simple street food.
We arrived late in Cape town, and Gilbert accommodated us, even meeting us on the side of the road to find parking as we drop in from the airport. It was an amazing day, learning all the history and the food was really tasty. Thanks for sharing your wonderful history with us. God bless, Clint and Louise.
Monwabisi gave us a fantastic tour, friendly and educated companionship and we learned a great deal about Cape Town and South Africa. We recommend you to take the tour.
The tour was a great way to experience Cape Town in a new light. Buleani not only introduced us to great local food, but also provided us with a fascinating look into the history of his country. He also took our food preferences into account and we got a lot of food during the tour, some of which we took in a doggy bag for later. Overall great experience.
Absolutely fantastic. Daryl couldn't have been any better. A wide range of eateries and food. Loved trying so many foods and having the opportunity to chat to a local resident
We got the great tour we expected, and so much more. Our guide was so friendly, and we had great conversations about all kinds of things, not just the food. But the in-depth knowledge of the history of food and culture was exceptional
We had an awesome time with Gilbert. He took us to try a lot of local food (all delicious!) and give us lots of explanation on the town history and daily live. We could feel his passion of this city and it was great to meet all of his shop friends. Everyone was very welcoming and very nice. We also greatly appreciated that no food was wasted (leftovers were given to homeless). In addition Gilbert also gave us lot of recommendation on where/what to eat for our trip- that was greatly appreciated! We highly recommend this tour with Gilbert if you are a food/history lover
Gilbert was fantastic! He touched base prior to the tour, so we knew where to meet and what to expect. The food choices and locations were authentic and varied which gave a great idea of multiple local foods. While doing the tour he included much information about the people, culture, and the city. I would recommend this to all ages!
Our guide was informative, helpful and fun. She went out of her way to take us places we inquired about and explained everything in great detail. We all enjoyed it.
All great...good on food and history. Put in some extra time with us which was appreciated and great perspectives. Would take his tour again.
We did the 10 tastings food tour on our first full day in Cape Town. This was certainly more than just a food tour. Gilbert was a wonderful guide that included the history of the city as well. We were able to experience where the locals eat and learn about the culture and history of the foods we were trying. We learned SO much and appreciated the extra time Gilbert gave us as we made our way to the waterfront. I would 100% recommend Gilbert has a tour guide and this tour!!
Parinita was wonderful! She answered all of my questions and I had a lot, lol! It’s more than a just a food tour, we learned so much about the city of Cape Town and have a new appreciation for their harrowing journey to democracy. The East African cuisine was my favorite part!!
The food tour was an absolute delight!! Aside from delicious food, we learned about local history, South Africa’s rich cultural tapestry, current issues, and so much more. We would have never discovered the restaurants or learned what we did without a local guide. Highly recommend the tour!
This tour is what we want. A day spent around historical and sightseeing in the heart of Cape Town with delicious food. The weather was nice during our walk. We are glad booked this tour because without the guide, we don't think we can go through some streets and areas, because it not that safe.
We did the 10 tastings food tour on our first day in Cape Town. It was the perfect introduction to the city. We could not have had a better guide than Gilbert, who not only explained the different types of food and it's history, but also gave interesting insights into the history & culture of the city without making it 'boring' for my daughter! I would 100% recommend Gilbert has a tour guide and this tour for those interested in trying proper local food that you won't get in the usual restaurants.
Chris provided an outstanding experience for our food tour. It was extremely personable, knowledgeable, and diligent. He earned and deserves our highest recommendation.
I had so much fun walking around Cape Town with Gilbert! Not only was there so much great food but I learned so much about the city and its history!
We had a wonderful time with Gilbert! He introduced us to local food spots that truly only someone born here would know. We felt like we were in the cool kids club being shown the city by someone who knew everyone we passed. We also really enjoyed learning about the recent history of South Africa from a personal perspective. Plus the food was all great. Thank you Gilbert!!
Gilbert was amazing and so very personable! He took us to some wonderful places that we would have never found on our own. He shared special things about Cape Town that we had no idea happened or exsisted. And, he had so many personal, family stories to share that made the experience special. Oh - and there was sooo much yummy food! We are hoping to go on another tour with Gilbert!
Our guide, Christopher, not only brought us around Cape Town to sample local cuisine, but also added history lessons and information that was fascinating. 3 hours well spent!
Good guide very knowledgable on Cape Town and SA history. Didn’t do 10 tastings only did 7. Ended at a gem factory…..not what would have expected. Was more. Was more a history tour than a food tour
My family and I had a wonderful afternoon with Gilbert. He is extremely knowledgeable about Cape Town history and culture and truly enjoyed showing us around. We were able to try many different dishes at places we never would have found on our own. If you're looking to experience the side of Cape Town away from the tourists, then I highly recommend Gilbert!
Christopher showed us the centre of Cape Town. Really nice tastings, lots of stories about the history of CT and modern life. He is a very nice man, humorous and he was very open to all our questions.
Parinita showed us some really cool local places, which you would simply overlook as a tourist. But be aware: the portions are huge!
It was a truly amazing tour through the city with many types of food. Gilbert gave us so many deep insights into historical or political topics that it was a real pleasure having him with us. He even spent more time with us than expected so that we definitely can recommend doing this tour.
Terrific tour with Gilbert, an excellent guide. We learned so much about Cape Town (historically and presently) and ate some really interesting food in places that we would never have found on our own. He was generous in every way.
Amazing afternoon with Gilbert! He met us as planned, got to know our family and immediately started talking about the history. As we walked around the city, Gilbert was sure to point out unique buildings and landscapes, all while sharing us how things have emerged. If we were to walk around on our own, we would surly have missed so much of the culture and history! This was a welcomed experience for our entire family. Even our kids, ages 13 and 10, came away with a unique knowledge of CapeTown and South African history…as well as experiencing all the yummy local food!
The weather isn't wonderful, however, it is close to Melbourne, lots of buildings from the gold mining days, and good bushwalking, and still OK sort of eating places. The Tourist Info bureau is in the Market Building in Mostyn Street, and extremely helpful elderly ladies there.
Our experience with Christopher in Cape Town was fantastic. He was knowledgeable about the history and architecture of the area as well as the local food. He was personable and friendly. The food was delicious. I would recommend Christopher and this experience to anyone.
We travelled from Australia as a family of 5 adults and we also had an 18 month old with us. Gilbert was super knowledgeable about every aspect of our tour. From the food, history of the local area and general South African knowledge. This was one of the highlights of our trip. And the food was incredible!
The food tour with Gilbert was great. All tastings were exceptional and very tasty. he took us to places we would never have found on our own. The highlight at the end was definitely the banana cake with vanilla ice cream and chocolate. Gilbert has a lot to say about everything.
This was fabulous! We started in District 6 and walked our way through Cape Town tasting local foods and history of Cape Town
We really enjoyed our food tour with Gilbert. There was a wide variety of food that we got to taste and we certainly didn’t go away hungry. Gilbert provided a wealth of information about the history of Cape Town and South Africa. It was well worth it.
