We had an amazing experience cage diving with Apex! The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable in all regards. We took about a 30-minute boat ride out to Seal Island and saw thousands of seals out in the wild. Once we reached our destination for the dive, we were able to get right into the cage to view the copper sharks that were surrounding our boat. It was incredible. There was never a point that we felt unsafe. We also saw dolphins and humpback whales on our time out at sea. We definitely recommend the experience to anyone visiting Cape Town who wants to head to Simon's Town for the morning.

Everyone on this tour were so friendly and welcoming. We met at their business shop in Simon’s town 10 minutes before the start to meet crew and do a safety briefing. Light snacks and drinks provided. Then we got on the boat and rode for about 45 minutes before immediately coming up on several bronze whaler sharks. The crew got the cage ready while we changed into our provided wetsuits. There was 8 participants including my husband and I. So they split us up into two groups of four. The crew made sure to tell us when and where a shark would be coming from. After some time in the cage we switched. And afterwards we headed towards Seal Island before going back to the office. Overall the experience was about 3 hours, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in spending time safely with sharks!
What an amazing trip with Apex today!! I felt at ease from the start to the end! We had seen 5 whales (Found out later that the Whale boat full of people had only seen 3). The sharks were in full force today and I've made so many happy memories today! Great snacks and warm drinks on board! The staff were great! A special shout out to Damara who made you feel at home and gave special attention to the guests!
What an incredible experience! The crew were lovely, really friendly and experienced and put everyone at ease. Our 13 year old son was really excited for this trip and it didn't disappoint. We visited seal island which was an awesome sight and then went on to dive with around 15 bronze whaler sharks. We would highly recommend Apex Shark Expeditions. This was a real highlight of our visit to Cape Town.
My partner and I booked the shark cage diving experience and we honestly had one of the most incredible experiences to date. Everything from communication, the team, and the experience was outstanding. We arrived and were warmly greeted by the receptionist (who deserves a special mention, she was lovely and also gave some great food recommendations for us). The team on the boat were awesome, a mix of very friendly/great knowledge, and great people skills to calm some nerves and get everyone ready. We saw everything, Sharks, Whales, Dolphins, Seals and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect. We can’t recommend the company enough and would suggest the team to anyone wanting to get some shark diving experience.
I had an absolutely amazing morning with Apex Shark! From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredible — so knowledgeable, professional, and super friendly. They made everyone feel welcome and completely at ease, taking the time to explain everything and answer all our questions. It was honestly one of the most magical experiences of my life. I was a little nervous before getting into the cage, but as soon as I was in the water, all my nerves disappeared. Seeing the bronze whaler sharks in their natural habitat was truly breathtaking. They were so beautiful and graceful — an unforgettable sight. I would go back and do it all again in a heartbeat. If you’re even thinking about it, don’t hesitate — it’s an experience you’ll treasure forever! Thank you from Shannon and Ben!!
An amazing day on the water with the super knowledgeable, friendly and fun Apex team. My fiancée and I were super fortunate to see a humpback whale, 100s of dolphins and then get to cage dive with Bronze Whaler sharks - an unforgettable day made all the better by the Apex team.
Fantastic experience, professional, friendly and informative team. From Dolphins swimming along the boat to Seal Island, to the experience itself everything was excellent and some responsibly to both the marine wildlife and the guests onboard. Thoroughly recommend!
Amazing experience with an experienced and awesome team. The shark cage dive is a thrilling experience and there is no better place to enjoy it. The team support is top notch in every step from the pre briefing and all the way to get in the cage.
This was a great experience. The communication prior was excellent and the trip was exactly as described. It is a baited dive however you will certainly see lots of sharks and fur seals! If you are scuba certified you also have the option of using air (as a pre-request).
We had the best time ever!!!! We saw so so so many sharks, I counted at least 25. Brandon and Rebecca were absolutely amazing, the sweetest people ever. Can’t recommend enough! Felt very safe the entire time and had a blast!!
From start to finish the team looked after us, making sure we were briefed well and ensuring we understood everything. We saw dolphins, seals and the main event we experienced sharks whilst in the cage. All very professional
The trip was in the morning the shark activity was really good with around 10 bronze whaler sharks and the added bonus of some dolphins on our way out.
All the guys were great from start to finish! They made sure we saw the sharks while in the cage (look this way or that way) and had snacks, drinks, and towels for when we got out.
We had a great time on our cage diving trip! The crew was so kind, informative and helpful! We had a great time both in the cage and watching the bronze whalers and sea lions from above. The only thing I would suggest is considering whether everyone could use a hookah system, v. only certified divers. I think that would make it a bit easier than breath-holding for non-divers.
The most amazing experience with a very knowledgeable and lovely crew. I highly recommend this experience. Must do as a solo, couple or group
Absolutely brilliant morning. Excellent crew, lots of info and thankfully lots of sharks ! Really recommend this tour !
Cage diving with APEX was the most amazing experience !!! Everything was perfectly organized (very detailed information was provided per mail before the trip, in the morning before the trip we were welcomed with soft drinks and cookies, everything was ready in the boat in time so no delay at all for the departure). We were even able to buy in the shop a protective waterproof bag for the mobile phone so that we could take pictures and videos underwater. The trip itself was amazing. We first stopped at the Seal Island. Afterwards we went to search for sharks. Diving in the cage was the most extraordinary experience. We were so lucky to have that day a lot of sharks around the boat and to watch these beautiful animals from short distance. A big thanks to Ryan and his team who were so helpful and funny and gave us a lot of information about the sea life ! Definitely something to repeat when we are in this area again ...
A friend of mine recommended Apex for a cage diving experience- she'd been in the past, and said they provided an excellent experience. From the start I was impressed by their professionalism, and their ability to put all of us at ease with what we were about to experience. The pre-trip briefing was informative, and all questions were answered thoroughly. Our first stop was ~7kms off shore to stop and watch the seals (and one lonely penguin) on Seal Island. The wind was blowing in the right direction, so we enjoyed the visit- we were told the smell could be quite overpowering! We then headed another couple kms out to a point where sharks had been reported previously. The two guides on the boat were incredible- how they could spot the sharks off in the distance was mind-boggling. Once we were ready to go, the cage was lowered, and we took turns, in groups of three, to take the plunge and watch these incredible creatures up close. We were amongst a school (or shiver, I learned) of about ten Bronze Whalers, measuring at 3-3.5m each. A bit of chum in the water kept them at close range and let us watch them glide though the water. I was only in the water for about 15-20 minutes, which was sufficient to feel like I'd gotten my money's worth. It was quite exhilarating, and my adrenaline was pretty much depleted by the time I got back on the boat. At the same time, I felt comfortable and safe the entire time. I can't recommend Apex Shark Diving highly enough!! (sorry for the poor quality photos- iPhones are not intended for underwater photography, I guess)
The absolute best part of our trip and an experience we’ll remember forever! the captain and crew made us feel so safe and went out of their way to make sure we had the best time! saw seals, dolphins and obviously sharks!!
This was the most amazing experience! The skipper team was knowledgeable, kind and encouraging. We had the best time and would book Apex 10/10 times when visiting Cape Town! Our group was 10 people and all of us loved the experience in the cage and the marine life we saw from the boat. Book Apex for your next adventure!
I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was very fun! It was pretty chill hanging out on the boat or floating in the cage. We saw a couple sharks, and lots of dolphins. Even a couple whales. We also got to drive around sea lion Island and see all those animals as well! The water was cold, but manageable with the wet suits.
I had a great experience with Apex. They promised Bronze Whaler Sharks and there were over ten of them waiting to join us. I highly.recommend that you book the scuba gear since it makes it so.much easier to stay under.water and watch the sharks. I didn't expect it.to be so rough under water. But waves and sharks give the cage a good shake. So much harder to keep going up and down if you dont have the scuba gear. On the way to the sharks we.saw a huuuuge pott of dolphins. A few hundred is underestimated
This shark cage diving experience was a complete bust! I understand that sightings are never guaranteed, but the complete lack of sharks was incredibly disappointing, especially considering the cost. The boat ride was long and uneventful, and the crew didn't even try to make up for the lack of sharks with any extra information or entertainment. It felt like we were just taken for a ride, literally and figuratively. I would not recommend this company to anyone looking for a thrilling shark encounter.
I am still here, but I felt compelled to write this review to say thanks to the team of Apex. I contacted them telling them I wanted to do multiple dives and do cage diving as I am focusing on sharks. I stayed here one week and they offered me a great package, which included cage diving here, cage diving in Gansbaai, all the transfer, all the accommodation ( very good places, Quayside lodge, Grosvenor Guesthouse and White Shark Guesthouse in Gansbaai) ,the organization of two scuba dives with Pisces Divers and a tour to Cape of Good Hope. Natalia was very helpful and handled all my questions and requests. I know I was demanding, maybe also a bit annoying, but they managed everything very well. I warmly recommend their services. The only thing missing was the great whites. If you are scuba divers, request a regulator and a cylinder, they will provide it to you and this will upgrade the whole experience of the cage diving. You'll get a chance to see seals as well. Really high level center, I recommend it.
It’s was amazing to see the sharks close and upfront , the instructors where amazing giving us cues when to dive and they spots a lot of other animals as well
I have been on trips with Apex for many years , this was my first trip since 2018 , while we didn’t see any great whites we did see lots of other sharks and also saw whales breaching on our trip , I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Apex as a company, I would always use Apex for any shark cage diving adventure,
A very expensive trip to simply sit on a boat and watch a seal eating all the food that was apparently being bait for sharks. very disappointed! The captain of the boat did not even engage with the six passengers on board. Except to say “ sorry guys no sharks today”(and great whites that are portrayed on their website by their own admission will probably not be seen) Do not sign up with these jokers
This was genuinely one of the best things I've EVER done. I can't believe some of the negative reviews, please ignore those. I arranged a pickup as I went for the morning departure. The driver was excellent, and we had a good chat on the way to the Apex office. Once there, we were introduced to the team and given a briefing and explanation of what (and what not) to expect. These are wild animals and obviously there is not going to be 100% guarantee of sightings. If you want that, go to an aquarium. Our group was 8 people, and because I was travelling alone I felt the team made an extra effort for me, which was much appreciated. I have never worn a wetsuit or been in a shark diving cage before, so I was slightly nervous, but once in it was INCREDIBLE! Even before we anchored we saw a humpback whale and a Bryde's whale, and a million seals on Seal Island. In the water at False Bay, we saw FIVE bronze whaler sharks (and yes, I didn't imagine them, despite what some other reviewers might think...). I have photos to prove it!! All the staff were great, really friendly, and really good at pointing out where to look once we were in the water. I particularly appreciated the help removing my wetsuit, and also the hot tea and crisps once dressed again :) Thank you all so much - great experience, great value for money, and something I will never, ever forget. I'll be back!
Fantastic tour, these guys are professional, friendly, personable, and conservation minded, which was a huge plus for me (they took time to fish trash out of the ocean while we waited for sharks). Driver came and picked me up from my hotel in Cape Town and was very good about answering my questions about the history of South Africa and Cape. We only saw one four foot shark on our trip (due to a storm the day before) but the crew was persistent and waited until we could attract the one shark we did see. Apparently the great whites haven't been seen in the area for 7 years, which is unfortunate, but we still saw dolphins and seals and just being out on the water was very scenic and a great experience! I will look this group up again the next time I'm in Cape Town.
They tell you right from the beginning, when you book, that you can never be definite that you will see a shark! We booked knowing that! The organisation and communication was great and we were constantly informed about everything. We knew we were not going to see a Great White as they made it clear these have not been seen for over 5 years. The crew were excellent, helpful, knowledgeable and funny and we had a great day. We saw two small sharks but it was more the experience of being out there and having a go. Yes it would have been great to see more sharks and bigger sharks but these are animals in the wild!
Complete waste of time. I understand wildlife do not come out for photo shoots - but do not get mugged into parting with your money with this company. 1) they send you an email, stating that diving suits are throughly cleaned before a next person uses them, but when you are on the boat - their is not enough suits. You are put into groups of four and expected to share the suit once the first group has had their diving experience. That’s dirty - what if they have a infections or pee in it? Also the change over time would be so long - the experience would be lost as they don’t have enough bait. 2) the bait they used was a joke - the fish on the line looked like it had been put out for the past 4 dive attempts as it wouldn’t coax a blind bird with a great sense of smell, let alone a Shark. The bait was lifeless - we couldn’t smell any fish, which is what you would expect to attract a shark - no fish blood or fish heads were put in the water as bait. After over two hours at sea - instead of ditching the meatless/odourless/colourless scraps of fish on the line. They put it back in the bucket, for the next days dive. I don’t think they realised - we saw you do it. 3) the crew in fairness are good, but lads - you can’t continue to mislead your customers like that. There are NO SHARKS in False Bay and that is a true statement and not a false one. 4) we did see some seals on Seal Island though - they say that their is between 65000 and 70000 seals - the Sharks clearly weren't interested in them though? 5) we also sighted some Whales. 6) you would get a better experience playing the baby shark song
Everything was well organised and clearly communicated before the boat ride. I rarely see such a committed and enthusiastic crew. During this half-day trip, they ensured that we all had fun and pampered us as much as possible on a shark diving boat. Thanks for the great experience!
We did a half day shark dive in July. The Apex team was excellent. Our safety briefing was thorough and the experience was an adventure. Unfortunately we did not see sharks, despite almost perfect conditions but the captain advised that sharks were scarce most of that week due to several days of big storms blowing out of the area. So that was a bummer, but you know, it’s the ocean, you can’t control sightings. Our captain did find two humpback whales and got us very close, which was a highlight of the day. Ultimately we had a great time, hand fed some ocean birds in mid-flight, got some great pics, saw some whales, and got some fresh air. Would definitely recommend Apex and would definitely try this again when we are next in Cape Town.
We had a fantastic time cage diving! We are so glad we went with apex and the ere excited to see a bronze whaler for dive in addition to seal island and some dolphins. The crew was great and everything was so well explained!
Just speechless. Had the very best experience with Ryan and Brendan from Apex. My 14 year old daughter and myself were hoping to fulfil a dream and we definitely did that. We were lucky enough to see a huge dolphin pod on the way to the anchor spot, which was incredible. We were lucky enough to see many Bronze Whaler Sharks right next to the cage. Truly breathtaking. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly. The equipment and wetsuits were warm and clean. There were lots of drinks and snacks on the boat for us to access. Absolutely brilliant all round.
The trip was amazing! I had done my research before the trip and I knew that we would not be seeing great whites but we did see a good size bronze whaler shark. The seals were entertaining and it was great to see a large pod of dolphins on the way out. The crew was very helpful and made sure everyone had a good time. If I'm ever in that part of the world again, I'll definitely call Apex>
Unfortunately we didn’t see any sharks. We spent about two hours anchored at sea, the staff were chumming the waters, the cage was all ready, we were dressed in the wetsuits but no sharks appeared. The crew did everything they could to attract sharks to the boat but to no avail. This is obviously not the fault of the company, working with wild animals is totally unpredictable. We weren’t offered any refund but were given a voucher to use if we return in the next two years.
Most disappointing experience ever. Don’t waste your time and money people!!!! Apparently Great Whites haven’t been sighted in the area in years - an expensive trip to not get up close and personal with any sharks whatsoever (we do appreciate wildlife can’t be on tap all the time but to not even provide some slight refund was gutting). We have been offered a voucher to use within 2 years but the chance of travelling to Sth Africa again from NZ in that time period is zero. Teenagers (and us adults) were bored and cold sitting in sea mist waiting for a good hour and a half before giving up and heading back. Apparently people on board had been the morning prior and saw nothing either. See more sharks in NZ to be honest!
AMAZING!!! Saw Sharks (Bronze Whalers) right next to the cage!!! Almost as amazing was a super-pod of an estimated 1000 (yes, 1000) dolphins! Seal island was also very neat. Snacks/drinks on board were included. Staff was very professional and knowledgeable. HIGHLY recommend.
A great day shark diving for my husbands 50th. The guys were informative, fun and friendly. Saw lots of sharks, seals and thousands of dolphins too. Great to have a refillable Branded water bottle to take home as a momento. Sarnys and crisps and chocs provided. Wet suits came in all required sizes. Thanks too for the birthday cake for hubby! A lovely touch :)
Absolutely an amazing time with these guys. The fellas on the boat were amazing. They took us right out to a spot and had sharks circles us within minutes. I would highly recommend this if you’re coming to Cape Town
I'm an avid diver and love the underwater world, but was not sure cage diving was something I would enjoy. This was a day in three parts, and I'm still not sure the sharks were the best part! I was already aware that the likelihood of seeing a Great White was low due for a number of reasons. Main downside was rougher water than expected and lower viz, so the cage was a bit rough going! But the ocean for you. However, we still did see plenty of bronze whalers during our dive; a real thrill to see them up close along with a few curious seals. Also wonderful to see their beautiful coloration from up on the deck. On the way back to shore we passed an enormous pod of dolphins -- 1,500 or more -- on their way somewhere. And it was really fun to see the seals swell surfing during our pass by Seal Island. The spectacular scenery of the Cape Town coast also deserves a mention; from out on the water, the mountains are truly majestic. Shout out to the Apex crew for their professionalism and sharing their knowledge of the marine environment. Overall, it was just a great day out on and under the water and money well spent.
Wow what an amazing experience. We saw lots of sharks as well as a visit to see the seals. The crew were amazing, very knowledgable, helpful and welcoming. Special shout out for Brandon. Would definitely recommend 🦈
Very well organized team! I loved my tour and experience of cage diving with sharks! Very beautiful creatures! We also saw many seals. No need to be afraid of anything once you follow all given instructions by the team. I highly recommend to try it with Apex shark expeditions. ♥️
The cage dive was so much fun. The guides were very knowledgeable and gave us an idea of what kind of animals we would see on our tour (unfortunately, Great Whites aren’t common in the area). We ended up seeing seals and about 7 bronze whaler sharks during the dive, and on the way back to the pier we got caught up in a pod of about 400 dolphins! The gear we used was well-taken care of and they had plenty of sizes of wetsuits and booties for everyone. 4 people fit into the cage at a time and with the size of our group, we had two groups go in for about 30 min each. The views from above water were great while you weren’t in the cage. Feel free to bring a go pro or underwater camera, the crew onboard will give you tips for using them as well. Snacks and beverages provided! Very informative, fun experience that you don’t get to do in many places. Worth the money and early wake-up!
An amazing experience from a very professional outfit. Personally I panicked in the cage. Sharks -no problem. Being shut in a cage with just head room of air - more challenging!! But no complaints about Apex - they delivered what we paid for!
It was one of the most incredible experiences of our lives. When we arrived, we were given tea and coffee and get briefed on the species of sharks we would be (hopefully) seeing. The team also informed us about other animals and were able to answer all our questions. Totally competent! The cage was safe and stable and we were given excellent safety briefings. We were given 5mm thick wetsuits with hoods and boots on the boat. The shark watching was exceptional. We saw 3-4 different bronze whale sharks up to 3m long and also a seal diving around the cage which was insane to watch! After our dive, we were able to watch others do their dive and watch the sharks from the deck. We would book with Apex again anytime and have the amazing experience again! We were also able to see Seal Island, which is home to a large number of seals, which was great. It was a wonderful and memorable experience for a fair price with a totally friendly and knowledgeable team. Thank you!!
An amazing experience, I highly recommend. The crew were professional and I felt really safe. An exhilarating experience being in the cage and spent the rest of the day on a high. Really organised and friendly company!
It was a unique experience! We saw a lot of sharks, dolphins and seals. Although motion sickness, we had a wonderful time.
