Professional, knowledgeable, and well equipped. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours and check one item off of my he basket list Susie the guide, was outstanding. Highly recommended. Jus be aware it is a 2 hr drive each way from Cape Town to the location.

I booked this through my safari agent and wished I would have booked some other company independently. The disappointment began with a 4:20 am pickup time. For the next 1:15 we drove around Cape Town, stopping at various hotels to pick up 9 more people. Some weren't ready, and the driver would simply wait outside until they showed up. We headed out to Gaansbaii around 5:45 am for the two hour drive which was uneventful. There was a breakfast and briefing, we were given wetsuits and slickers, and taken down to the harbor to the boat. A short ride later, the water was chummed and the cage thrown over. No sharks appeared. Apparently there haven't been sharks there for awhile. When a single manta ray showed up, people were encouraged to jump into the cage - no way was I getting into the 53 degree water just to see a manta in poor visibility water. One seal also came by, and in the distance there were two southern right whales. That's it. We were offered a voucher for a repeat trip out, but there was no way I was doing the whole long painful trip again. HOWEVER - marine dynamics was redeemed by the fact that they offered a seal snorkel tour for 10 people for an additional cost. This was a good adventure, if you're comfortable swimming in fairly rough seas and cold water. We were taken out to Shark Alley where there are 50-60,000 cape fur seals and allowed to swim with dozens of them. Absolutely unique and captivating experience that partially redeemed the failed shark adventure. Would I do it again? Only if I had nothing else to do. Turns out great white sharks have not been seen in the Cape for many many years, and even though I knew the chance was slim I had at least THOUGHT there was a chance prior to this.
Shark diving was so fun! We had the option with pickup at our hotel and it made the whole process very easy. We enjoyed learning about the sharks and seeing them in real life although it took a bit to get them to come by the boat. The staff was very helpful with helping us warm up before getting in the water and after. It was my son's favorite part of our trip!
Overall, we had a fun day and the bronze whaler sharks were awesome to see up close. The crew were friendly and it was definitely a cool experience, but there were a few things that could be improved. The whole day felt a little rushed, and the breakfast was pretty average. The tour is also advertised around the possibility of seeing great white sharks, but from what we were told they haven’t actually seen great whites in a very long time, so I think expectations could be set a bit more realistically. The extra seal diving was also disappointing in how it was organised. Only 10 people could do it, and the spots basically went to whoever put their hand up first. If your partner wasn’t there at that exact moment, you could easily miss out on doing it together. All in all, the bronze whalers were really cool and we had a fun day. There are definitely a few things that could be improved, but it was still a worthwhile experience.
Absolutely spectacular experience. From the get go the pick up from Capetown was on time and the driver excellent. The operation in Gansbaai is professional but clearly everyone enjoys their job. If you didn’t sign up for snorkeling with seals and they offer the opportunity, jump on it. You’re already there and the additional experience, is worth it, to include the cool boat ride. The sharks were cool but the seals were amazing. Having adult and baby seals a foot in front of your face is so cool and watching them play was fantastic. Altogether worth every penny and more. Marine Dynamics is awesome
Amazing amazing experience, super well organised and well run. Everyone was friendly and helpful and genuinely want you to have a great trip. Wet suits, masks and towels are provided but I would recommend taking your own as well as they're not the biggest. When you come out of the water you are showered with warm water and given delicious hot chocolate, delicious plentiful snacks are also on hand. We saw many sharks and stingrays but obviously nothing is guaranteed. I would gladly recommend this trip to anyone.
We (ages 8-75) were all a bit nervous beforehand but ended up loving the experience. Everything was well organized, very clean, very educational and lots of fun.
This was one of the best experiences in life I had. Get to see sharks so close. We also saw Whale fish. The Stinger was a bonus. Great guidance from Marine Dynamics team.
This experience lived up. I have read about and watched docu-series about Shark Alley for decades. While I know the Great Whites have been driven out, I still wanted to experience it. Thomas, the marine biologist, was informative; sustainable practices for bait vs chum were followed well; and I felt safe. It was fun and, overall, a great experience at a place that contributes to conservation and research.
A bucket list item fulfilled with excellent service from start to finish!
Marine Dynamics delivered so much more than a shark cage diving experience—they delivered world-class hospitality. From the moment we arrived and saw our names on the welcome board, we felt genuinely welcomed and valued. It was such a thoughtful touch that immediately made us feel like VIP guests. Meeting Claudia and Aletta were a pleasure, and it was clear from the start that the passion for guest experience and marine conservation runs throughout the entire team. Carmen, our driver, was fantastic, and Thomas was exceptional on the boat, constantly checking in on everyone and even giving us the opportunity to enter the cage twice, which made the experience even more memorable. The wildlife encounters were absolutely incredible! We were fortunate enough to see numerous **Bronze Whaler sharks**, and they kept coming back to the cage, giving us amazing viewing opportunities throughout the trip. One curious little Bronze Whaler was particularly entertaining—it actually swam right into the cage, and we had to gently push him back out, which gave everyone a good laugh! We were also lucky enough to spot stingrays and playful Cape fur seals, making the entire experience even more magical. A special thank you to the wonderful volunteers who looked after me when I started feeling seasick. Their kindness, compassion, and attentiveness made such a difference, and I couldn't be more grateful. Also, a huge shoutout to the cameraman and official hype man—his energy and enthusiasm kept everyone smiling and added so much fun to the day! The educational aspect was equally impressive. Learning about the sharks, African penguins, and the incredible conservation work Marine Dynamics does was fascinating. Every team member was knowledgeable, passionate, and genuinely excited to share their expertise. As someone who works in the hospitality industry, I naturally pay close attention to guest experiences, and this team absolutely exceeded my expectations. Nothing felt rushed, every detail was thoughtfully planned, and every member of the team genuinely cared about making our day unforgettable. I can now confidently recommend Marine Dynamics from firsthand experience, not just for the incredible shark cage diving, but for the exceptional people, outstanding hospitality, and the way they make you feel from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave. If you're considering booking with Marine Dynamics, don't hesitate. It is an experience you'll never forget. Thank you to the entire team. Bronwyn Petersen. Cape Grace Hotel
The activity was well-planned, communication beforehand was timely and clear. Adam (driver) picked us up at our hotel on time and brought us to the dive house. Amy (primary guide) gave clear guidance on what to expect over breakfast. The activity itself was organized and we felt safe the whole time; the group saw a nice mix of giant black stingrays, bronze whaler sharks, and cape seals. After heading back to shore, we had a light lunch, then Adam took us to the Penguin Center, then back to Cape Town.
It was a fun experience! I’m glad I did it and I loved how excited the guides all were during the entire day.
Wonderful experience with sharks, sting rays, and seals. The return trip and the adventure itself were well organized and came off flawlessly.
Whole experience was faultless. Picked up promptly at my hotel in a clean and comfortable van. Stopped on the way to the dive location for a toilet and coffee break. Met a Marine Dynamics by a good breakfast. Quick safety briefing and then out in the boat. On 30mins to dive site we saw a sunfish and a quick glimmer of a whale. Saw a total of 7 sharks and a friendly seal. Good wetsuits and equipment .Great view of the sharks from the boat but the visibility in the water wasn’t very good, but at least I can say I swam with sharks. Hot chocolate to warm up after. Returned to soup and rolls for lunch before the drive back to Cape Town. Marine Dynamics is a professionally run organisation and I would recommend this to anyone.
This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure! Unforgettable Shark Diving Experience! From start to finish, the entire shark diving experience was incredibly well organized and professional. The crew made us feel safe and confident, explaining everything clearly before we got into the water. Seeing the sharks up close was absolutely breathtaking and thrilling at the same time. The team was knowledgeable and passionate, sharing interesting facts about the sharks which made the experience even more meaningful. The equipment was in great condition, and safety was clearly a top priority throughout. Even as a first-timer, I felt completely at ease thanks to the guidance and support from the staff. If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure, I highly recommend this experience. It exceeded all my expectations, and I would definitely do it again! Bonolo Ntsime iXplore Africa Travel & Tours
Absolutely worth it. We were hesitant to book this trip due to the decline in great white sightings, but we ended up being thrilled by the incredible views of bronze whaler sharks and rays. What really stood out was the company’s genuine passion and dedication to shark and wildlife conservation. The crew were friendly, entertaining and highly organised, ensuring everything ran seamlessly. Our driver was punctual and the journey was safe and comfortable. An unforgettable experience, thank you!
It’s a really nice experience, and I truly enjoyed it. I also liked that, besides having a good time, you’re contributing to shark research in the area—that part meant a lot to me. However, personally, I booked this experience because both my travel agency and the website mentioned that it was to see great white sharks. As they explain once you arrive, since around 2017 two orcas have been preying on them, so it’s now very, very unlikely to see a great white. That was disappointing for me. If you’re looking for an experience to see other types of sharks or marine life, it’s definitely fun and worthwhile. But if your main goal is specifically to see a great white shark, I wouldn’t recommend it. That said, the crew is very friendly, and you’ll still have a great time overall.
The experience was nice overall, but the sharks were actually better seen from the boat than underwater. Visibility in the cage made it harder to fully enjoy the experience. In hindsight, I would have preferred a boat-only viewing experience.
Great experience- crew and team were superb well done guys well worth the trip to Gansbaai
Just a heads up this is approx 2 1/2 he drive from Cape Town to the costed of the Shark experience. Our driver was great. Answered any questions we had. We were provided a pasta lunch before heading out. It was choppy on the water. So make sure to bring Gravel or patches for motion sickness. There was a bunch of not so happy passengers on our boat. They did provide chunks of ginger which did help. While in the water we did have approx 7-9 Bronze Whaler sharks. They wpuld just swim by no bashing of the cages so was great to see them up close. We were in the cage for approx 20 mins per group (8 people) and on the water for about 2 1/2 hrs. The site is approx 15 mins from the dock. Overall it was a great experience.
The cage dive was exciting! The bronze whaler sharks came right at you - up close! We did not see any great white sharks, but there were plenty of bronze whaler sharks!
We were blessed with perfect weather, calms seas, and plenty of sharks! Also saw a sting ray, some dolphins, and African penguins. The staff was knowledge and attentive. The pick ups were timely. Would definitely recommend!
An early pick up, but collection from your accomodation so no fuss. Our driver (I am so sorry I did not catch his name was superb!) Arrival with light breakfast in a lovely set up - The Great White House, and a very informative briefing. The team running the show from start to finish make you feel very comfortable and safe, and they are very very organised with everything from timings, to equipment for you on the boat. So lovely their focus is on conservation so not a quick buck but sustainable environment with particular focus on the African Penguins and Sharks We saw so much today - Dolphins in abundance, cape fur seals, a sun fish, bronze waler sharks , African Penguins. sting Ray. Apprehensive prior to the trip ref the shark cage - but absolutely no need whatsoever to be worried all incredibley controlled and safe. Back post trip for a de-brief and a well coordinated trip home. A big thanks to Susie (of Norwegian heritage) who made the day with her enthusiasm I would thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone !!! Thanks Guys
Great experience! I went with my 16 year old son, he really enjoyed it! On the way to the cage diving place we saw whales, dolphins, and on the diving place we saw a seal and a sting ray. On arrival, we were inmediately visited by copper sharks. The crew was very helpful, and the two marine biologist very knowledgable. If anyone does not want to dive, he/she can just watch the sharks from the deck No divig experience needed!
I really enjoyed my adventure to shak cage, The staff are very helpful and friendly, you aren’t allowed to touch the shark, but if you want you must be in the corner of cage, and they have snaks on the boat the trip takes one hour half .Make sure to book before because many people go there specifically on the weekend
Nice guys with well prepared cage equipment. Unfortunately we only saw one shark for 2 minutes. There age some points which lead to this three star review. The pickup time on tripadvisor was 7am, but the real pick up time was 4am. We only got notice the day before. We didn like that, just write the correct pick up time in tripadvisor, wo we can prepare and arrange breakfast. Secondly there are no showers after diving. Keep in mind that you swim in cold water with fish garbage on the surface. After diving you have to dress on the boat into your normal clothes and drive 3hrs to capetown. You stink and feel very unwell. In addition the driver was not able to keep straight line. He also played with the gas Paddle way to much and we were all shaking inside the bus. Gas, no gas, gas, no gas.... no steady pace. The bus was also tide and there could be more legroom. All in all it cought have been a nice experience, but having the price in mind and that we didnt see Sharks under water, we left with mixed feelings.
I did the shark cage dive and it was a great experience in every way. I really appreciated that they focus on conservation rather than just a tourist show — that matters. The staff were knowledgeable, took great care of us, and shared lots of interesting info. And the small touches like snacks and hot chocolate on the boat made it even better. Would definitely recommend.
The whole experience from start to finish was outstanding and well managed by the team at Marine dynamics. The transport from Cape Town was punctual and comfortable, arriving at Gansbaai in plenty of time to grab a coffee and breakfast for our briefing before we headed out onto the ocean and to the location of the shark diving. The supply of wetsuits, jackets and lifejackets was well managed and the overall experience was superb, with five sharks swimming around the cage. From start to finish we felt safe and protected and the crew were friendly and communicated well. I would recommend this as a great shark diving company, to experience these amazing creatures close up.
it's a great experience; the crew was amazing. I would do it again and recommend to people who has not done it yet. from the driver who picked us up to the crew sooooooo professional. the vehicle is super clean and the boat crew so nice and willing to assist. The welcome was warm and inviting, with some food provided as well. The safety briefing was clear and well-organized, and we were given all the necessary equipment. Each group had plenty of time in the cage, and there was a marine biologist on board who explained fascinating details about the sharks and was very open to questions.
There will be NO great whites but still an amazing trip. Saw lots of sharks, a sting ray, whales & seals
I can't rate it higher than a 3 because we saw ZERO sharks. Three people got in the water after a 90 minute wait to view a large stingray. Also, we saw 3 pass of whales at a distance during the tour. The water temp was 15 which precluded shark activity according to the marine biologist on the staff. The entire crew, staff, and operation are first class but the total experience was a frigid, 3 hour+ boat trip to shark alley to view seals. Perhaps a different time of year would be better.
The tour picked me up at 6:30 AM from my hotel (Capital Mirage in Cape Town), then a couple of other people at other hotels. On this trip, everyone spoke English. The trip to the launch point took around 2 hours, and it was a nice ride, watching the sunrise and seeing the countryside and wineries along the way. We stopped by a penguin rehabilitation center for about 15 minutes for a quick explanation of the agency's purpose (and a request for donations). When we got to the tour center, we were joined with other people and all of us were directed upstairs to a buffet continental breakfast- breads & pastries, cold meats, cheeses, fruits, fruit juices and hot beverages. We watched a video explaining safety guidelines. Back outside, staff issued rain coats and led us on a 5 minute walk to the marina. The 2-story boat was modest sized, and everyone sat on benches along the sides of the deck. The trip on water to the diving point took 30-45 minutes. Once anchored, staff issued each passengers a wet suit, and we all undressed and re-dressed. Staff secured an aluminum cage along one side of the boat. "Diving" involved passengers taking turns entering the cage and immersing into the water. The cage seemed about 8-feet deep (six of those were under water), three-feet wide, and 10-feet long. The cage had ladder-steps facing front, so when we entered the cage, we held ourselves up, heads out of water, until ready to go under. As we entered the cage, we each got a SCUBA mask, but no snorkel. So, one stayed under water as long as you could hold your breath. Staff chummed the water on one side of the cage with fish guts infused with fish oil, while two other staff each threw into the water a big fish carcus attached to a hook and rope then pulled it back in toward the cage, over and over. Everyone got into the cage at least once. There was no time-limit on how long one could stay in, but no one was impolite about time. Staff took pictures of individual divers, and the animals and area around the boat. On this day, 9/1/25, the waters were cold and choppy, and the wind was pretty bad. At least half of us got seasick, including myself- my experience in the cage was about 10 minutes until I threw up. Everyone was good natured about it, though. When staff saw someone looking green, they offered mint, ginger, medications, and liquids. The anchored experience lasted about an hour. We did get to see a lot of copper sharks, a stingray, a seal, and, while we motored from the marina, a whale. Seagulls followed us to and from the marina, and fought for chunks of fish that floated in the water. Everyone changed back into their clothes after their turn in the cage. The ride back was as bumpy as the ride there but, again, no one complained. Back on shore, staff invited us to some vegetable soup and liquids. The place had an extensive souvenir shop. Visitors were invited to support the research agency run through the tour with sponsorships at various levels. The van took us back to our hotels without stopping. I'm glad I went and I had a lot of fun. I won't hold the tour responsible for the waves and weather- we were in Nature's pool after all. The only possible downside is that the tour cannot promise that a shark will be sited. If no shark comes around, then visitors are offered a voucher for another tour on another day at no cost. If the experience sites just one shark, however, then the experience is considered successful and no vouchers are offered
Absolutely fantastic. An early pickup with a friendly driver. Breakfast was great and a talk on sharks before the short boat ride. Plenty of time in the water seeing over 20 sharks and a couple of rays. Even joined by a cheeky seal after the sharks left. Back to the centre for some warming soup and then the journey back to our hotel. Such a brilliant experience.
The whole process ran like clockwork. Could not fault the service and it was a great experience. FRiendly and informative staff
The whole organisation is great from the pick up to the drop off, however realising that the Great White Shark is unlikely to be sighted was a big disappointment.
An incredible experience with a great company. We had a lovely time and saw many sharks and stingrays. So worth it
Such a professional company that really takes care of their clients. We saw lots of sharks and had a great experience! Dyer Island and Shark Alley were also highlights! The staff were amazing!!!!
Great time, staff was wonderful. From pick up at my hotel in Capetown to drop-off. Got a little queasy and staff were ready with ginger which saved me.
Awesome crew and experience! Everyone was well prepared and passionate. We saw 3 bronze while we were in the cage.
This was a great day out and we all had a really fun time. It is a very professional and well run organisation, you feel safe at all times and all the staff on and off the boat are really friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!
The crew for this trip was fun, knowledgeable, and made the event enjoyable. While we did not see any Great Whites, we did see 8-10 Bronze Whaler Sharks. They came right up the cage. Below us, side of us, towards us. Overall: I am glad I did it with this company because they were very professional throughout the whole event.
A once in a lifetime experience that is enhanced with Marine Dynamics and their epic crew! Would recommend to all marine lovers for extra insight into sharks and their behaviour.
The staff was super friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. They offer a video taken by the staff for only 200 Rand which feels like a steal because of how much footage you get. Marine Dynamics does a lot of conservation work as well which is amazing and they have a great gift shop. I also loved the penguin sanctuary which helps rehabilitate and save penguins from South Africa and a small donation can go a long way for them. I would definitely do this again this was an unforgettable experience!
Awesome experience but definitely “type two” fun. We didn’t see white sharks but didn’t expect to. They’re a threatened species and numbers are sadly declining. We did see tons of copper sharks which are still really cool. If you are prone to seasickness, you will get sick. I took every medicine in my arsenal and was still miserable. The cage made me the most sick since it rocks really heavily with the boat and there no horizon to focus on. The water is freezing! This has been a bucket list item for a long time and I’m glad I get to check it off the list. The crew were fantastic, kept us safe and checked in often to see how we were feeling and if we needed anything. Thank you Marine Dynamics for a truly memorable experience.
Amazing experience. Very professional team from the start to to finish. I took up transport from Cape Town to Gansbaii. They stopped at a penguin rescue sanctuary on the way and you get to learn about the rescue centre and meet some of the inhabitants. You get a light breakfast on arrival and a brief of what to expect on the boat. You will get plenty of time in the cage to view these amazing sea monsters. I had around 40 mins in the cage which is more than enough. I saw copper sharks, giant manta rays, and seals. You may also get lucky to see dolphins and/or whales during the trip.
Great experience! It’s a long day but worth it. Unfortunately didn’t see great whites but did see lots of sharks, 3 enormous stingrays and some cute seals that hung out with us the whole time! Staff is extremely knowledgeable and so friendly!
This experience was worth the money, early morning transportation, cold water lol. I was picked up and dropped back off at the doorstep to my hotel in Capetown. The ride and pre briefing went pretty smoothly, and then it was off to the boat. After chumming the waters the beautiful sharks started coming out. I felt safe in the cage. Us participants waded in the water for the shaks to come, took a deep breath, and pushed ourselves under water to see the majestic sharks close up. You’ll get a full wetsuit with hoodie, booties, and googles which you’ll need to see under water and brave the cold water (about 12C with our experience). No O2 tank or other scuba equipment given/needed. We saw some seals, and a large group of Dolphins on the way back to shore. Truly an unforgettable experience for sure!
Have your swim wear on from the start. It will save you having to change clothes an extra time on the boat.
Great people, they took good care of us all😊a smaller group would be better, but they handled everyone the same and made sure we all got time in the cage....nice snacks before and after!!
