It was interesting, but overpriced (about $85 US per person) and poorly communicated by local vendor. The tour date/time we selected ended up being for South Africa residents only. That fact either wasn't mentioned, or I didn't see it when I booked via my phone. I noticed it when I received my confirmation. I emailed the vendor asking what to do and did receive a timely, but incomplete response. He just said we would need to pay extra when we arrived for the tour. When we arrived, the agent couldn't find our reservation. Someone from the local vendor finally showed up, said he wasn't able to contact me and we should have straightened this out yesterday. He then told me we needed to pay an extra 400 Rand cash, which I didn't have, so I went to an ATM machine. Not impressed.

Don't book through this as they charge almost double than if you book through the Robben Island museum tour directly. While the tour was good and worthwhile, there is no reason to pay an extra premium booking through this platform
A very interesting and moving visit to Robben Island. The guide is an ex-prisoner so speaks from his own harrowing experience. The ferries work well with the island's buses. All went quite smoothly.
The pick up was on time and very informative delivered us directly onto the boat and waited for us on our return. The tour itself was interesting and informative
It was a great and memorable experience, it was worth the money I paid for . It is a very interesting place and I learnt a lot
I enjoyed the Explanation of how Nelson Mandela tried and won the fighting journey against racism politically.Leaving all South Africans with the hope that nothing is impossible when you put more effort
This tour was well worth the time. It was great to hear about the island from folks who were imprisoned there. The tour is not for the feint of heart though-some was a bit tough. I would highly recommend this tour. The boat ride back and forth is fun too.
Very important historical location! Our tour guide shared personal and the past history with other experiences of being in that location
Awesome experience! Our tour guide had been a political prisoner for 7 years at the prison. It was great to get a first hand commentary
Joseph was a very helpful, friendly and courteous driver. He picked us up at the hotel and took us through to the boarding gate for the boat. The tour of Robben Island was a very informative and moving experience.
This is a must do experience while in Cape Town. Our guide around the prison was an ex detainee with so much knowledge and you could ask him any questions which he truthfully answered.
I recently booked a tour to Robben Island in Cape Town through KJA Tours, and I cannot recommend them enough. The entire experience was seamless from start to finish. The tour was incredibly well-organized. They provided excellent door-to-door service, picking me up directly from my accommodation and dropping me back off safely afterward, which made the whole trip completely hassle-free.The highlight of the tour was definitely the visit to the island itself. The historical insights provided were profound and moving. What made it truly exceptional was our guide, who was not only extremely kind and friendly but also shared genuine, firsthand experience—having actually been imprisoned on the island in the past. Hearing the history directly from someone who lived through it added an unmatched layer of depth and authenticity to the entire experience. If you are visiting Cape Town, booking with KJA Tours is an absolute must!
It is well run and runs to a tight schedule. It's quite informative and the guides bring their personal and family experiences of Robben Island to their presentation.
A sad but must-try experience. Both our transfer guy (Joseph) and tour guide on the island (ex-prisoner Tom Moses) were amazing.
It was a great experience. A special day. I was lucky to do this on a special day in the calendar. National Nelson Mandela Day.
This trip was quite intense and really valuable. Would strongy recommand it to everyone.
Really enjoyed this tour! Loved that we could customize it and add a few extra activities to suit us. Hotel pickup and drop-off was super easy, and everything was well organized. Big thanks to our guide for being so friendly and patient throughout the day. Would definitely recommend!
Joseph was a great driver and gave us information as we went over. He took care of getting the tickets for us and making sure you were in the right place and giving us ideas about the layout of the V&A atea after we were done. Of things to do. The tour of the island itself was fabulous. It was a bus ride, and then we sat and heard from an actual gentleman that had been a prisoner there. Overall, just a wonderful educational experience.
A visit to Robben Island is not for the faint of heart. Stories from former inmates who experienced daily and cruel torture and deprivation of basic human rights for years brought tears to my eyes and fellow travelers. For those who want learn from the bleak period in South African history you should not miss this opportunity when you visit Cape Town
The tour guides were great, and Samuel who picked us up from the hotel was wonderful!! The tour was closer to 6 hours instead of the 4 hours advertised, and Samuel waited patiently to take us back to the hotel.
30min boat trip to the island and then 1hr guided tour around the island and prison including getting to meet a former prisoner.
unparalleled wine country experience
Really moving tour as you are shown around the island and prison by former islanders
It was my birthday yesterday, but paid full price. N it was supposed to b free.... If i can get my refund.. As the robben Island crew were not happy about this as well...
It was an outstanding experience all around. Our driver, Joseph, made sure we were well taken care of. He picked us up from our hotel promptly. explained the logistics of the day, gave us water, made sure we were safely on the boat to the island, and was waiting for us upon our return. He was very pleasant and also told us about the history of the island. He was a real.pleasure! The ferry boat ride was comfortable and clean. On the way there and on the way back, there was a presentation about the history of Robbens Island and its inhabitants. Very well done and informative. Once we arrived on the island, we had two tour guides...i e for the bus ride around the island and another who walked us through the prison. Both shared moving very personal experiences about Robbens Island and apartheid. While I am very saddened that apartheid happened, I am also uplifted by the string spirits of these freedom fighters and all persons who worked to end it.
We were told to meet at the Clocktower. We were there at the appointed hour, but nobody was there to meet us. Als a result we missed our ferry to the island. When I contacted the operator, they said nobody was gonna meet us. Not sure why we booked with Vito or the operator since there was no value added. Skip the upcharge and secure the ticket yourself. You’ll be better off.
This is a rip off. You can buy these tickets direct at the ferry terminal for half the price. This is not a typical group tour with a guide like most. All the local Viatour rep does is hand you a bottle of water and tell you to get on the Ferry, then they leave. They don’t come with you at all. The tickets we paid over $81 USD for per person are less than $40 USD per person at the terminal and it’s the exact same product (other than a bottle of water).
This tour is a must-do in Cape Town, and I'm so glad we chose it. The experience was thought-provoking, humbling, and inspiring all at once. Our guide was top-notch, and the tour was well-organized. We had a great time learning about the island's history and seeing the sights. If you're looking for a meaningful experience in Cape Town, this tour is a great choice – 5 stars!
Although I suspect I could have arranged this for less money locally, as we were short of time in Cape Town, it was well worth the extra bit of money to meet our lovely guide and taxi driver Isaac. He took care of us make sure we were in the right place at the right time, brought us fresh water and was there when we finished our tour.
Transportation went smoothly. The walking was not burdensome. Our guide — a former prisoner at Robben Island — gave an animated and very informative explanation of life as a prisoner there. He emphasized the importance of hope and forgiveness.
Thank you so much for an amazing experience i truly enjoyed this tour and also for being so accommodating making sure that i made it back to my hotel safe i can’t wait to come back
Dont take this tour. Just go to the box office and get the tickets directly! I was charged $81 (1,379 ZAR) assuming that the agency provided added value or a differentiated experience. In reality, the agency appears to act purely as an intermediary: all components of the tour (ferry transport, bus transfer, guided visit, and former prisoner testimony) are already included in the standard ticket, which is available at the official box office for approximately $35 (600 XAR) and provided by the museum directly, not the agency. Bottomline, the agency is charging a $46 commission to get the tickets for you. The listing would be more transparent if it explicitly stated that the service is limited to ticket intermediation and that all services are not provided by herself, but by the museum! Perhaps this service makes sense during high season.
The buses are not air conditioned and the seating is crammed. This makes for a very uncomfortable ride. It was hard to focus on our tour guide’s info. I loved the fact that our guides were those who had actually experienced the life there in the jail. I would do it again but come prepared for the elements.
A very well worth excursion. After collection from our hotel we had a ferry journey to the island ,bus round the island with information from a guide .We then walked round the prison area of the island and heard first time experiences from an ex inmate .Quite humbling .
It's a scam. Book the tour tickets at the museum itself save eur 40 (it is exactly the same). Poor communication and unclear instructions prior to the tour.
We have used Viator an numerous occasions and just recently on our trip to Spain with the same positive experience. But this did not happen at Robben Island excursion. The whole reason for booking with Viator is too have your experience handled by professionals. I was given the specific instruction to meet the representative at a specific location and at a specific time. However, nobody ever showed up. Without any direction we were left to wonder around. Fortunately, somebody did reply from the company and told us to get on the Ferry and that EVERYBODY was doing the same tour. Which begs the question why am i booking with a private company and paying more for the service if EVERYBODY is getting on the same boat, and then getting on the same bus, and then returning together. I should have just booked directly with the Capetown Tourist Office if there was no difference. In the end, the boat and tour was informative but not because Viator did anything.
Great tour....very educational, emotional, informative and will leave you speechless. Tour operator streamlined the process by providing tickets in advance, picked us up from hotel and took us to boat, guided us through line to get on boat and were waiting for us when we returned. While on the island, guides were waiting for us and we were honored with getting a guided tour by a former political prisoner. This tour was absolutely amazing and I highly recommend. This is a popular tour so it gets crowded but the experienced staff handles the crowd very well. They break up the groups on different buses and with different guides and go through different sections of the prison so the tour doesn't seem overcrowded and you are not overwhelmed.
Booked trip with pickup/drop off over one month ago. Morning of told they couldn’t, had to scramble to find alternate transportation
Love paying for pickup and drop off but being told it’s not available the day of…scrambled to find alternate
This experience has changed. The quality of your experience is contingent on your tour guide. Everything is extremely professional and executed with quality controls.
We would really recommend this tour. Boat takes 30 minutes but well worth doing for the experience. Our tour guide was an ex prisoner and very informative.
Emotional and authentic to be guided by former prisoners. The boat transfer is about half of the time.
Scam, buy your tickets directly on the official website. There it is 600 rand per person. Beside that, it is a very poor experience. Wouldn't recommend it, I would even say it's a waste of time.
The driver was great - difficult place to pick me up, but he managed. The guides on Robben Island were both wonderful! I learned a lot.
Robben Island visit was amazing the historique of the prisonnier inside the cell and the life of they qre leaders it was good expérience
Very moving to learn of the courage of the anti-apartheid leaders. Max, our guide, a former prisoner, was inspiring!
Rob en Island tour was an incredibly moving and educational experience. Truly a must see for every visitor to Cape Town. Our guide was extraordinary and the driver that picked us up at the hotel was first rate!
Great experience. Well worth seeing what Mandela and his colleagues had to endure. Very humbling experience
Excellent tour and wonderful Idea to use former imprisoned individuals , the gentleman we had served 7 years of his 35 year sentence.
The tour was excellent. So glad that we decided to do it at the last minute, so worth it. Very educational.
