Great experience from the well organised departure remember to have ID with you tickets taken through security then into the boat . It’s very comfortable staff helpful informative video before arriving at robben island . Bus trip lady was great her great grandfather was in prison she had a copy of his book so sad what they put up . Then we were passed to an inmate from the prison . He was informative taking us to his cell and Nelson Mandelas explaining about the conditions which were appalling . I’ve just ordered his book to read when back home . Boat trip back was great we saw penguins on Robben island great value for money

Excellent tour very well organised and informative. The talk from the ex prisoner was very enlightening .
Inside the prison the personal stories hit hard. A few dry jokes helped balance it. Meaningful morning.
It was a well planned trip and the guides were very knowledgeable and helpful. We learnt alot about the history not only of the Prison but Robben Island in general. One warning is take a jumper or coat. It was summer but it gets nippy on the trip to the island and it was quite windy as well on the island.
The tour was phenomenal and so educational. The time spend was off on the app. The ferry left 40 minutes late, not viators fault, but we didn't get back from the tour until much later then predicted which threw off plans for prepaid dinner reservations. Made it very stressful.
This is very informational tour. We learned a lot about the culture and political history of South Africa. Seeing the penguins and seals & nice sightseeing views in the island are special additions to the tour. The ferry ride is very nice.
Great experience Left pier at 10:40 back just after 14:00 Great tour taken around by bus, good way to see most of the island. I highly recommend this tour
It’s a great trip the boat across was great our guide was very good & told us all about robben island If you are going book early as it gets booked up quickly
The bus gave a good overview of the island, then we walked through the maximum security section. The guide who had been imprisoned there spoke calmly about his experiences. Standing in those small cells stayed with me.
Inside the prison the ex-prisoner spoke about daily routines and how people kept going. A couple of unexpected jokes lightened the mood. Left feeling thoughtful.
There’s a 5 min walk or so at the end of the tour back tothe ferry. Great to hear from someone who had been imprisoned there. A sobering experience but one people should recognise. Really glad we went.
It was a very well organised and thought provoking visit. Having a former political prisoner as a guide really brought everything home. Thanks Sparks! Roger and Rosie
As you are sitting in the prison a former prisoner (a dissident not a criminal) gave a powerful talk on what he experienced at the prison. The tour was a really interesting lesson in history.
Candy was amazing! She was so accommodating and knowledgeable. She never allowed one minute to spare without providing information and knowledge of South Africa. That is a great example of what a Tour guide needs to be everywhere. Also, she made sure everyone had their pictures, she personally took the time to take each one and get the perfect shot! Her driver P was on point! Very safe driver and he knew his way around. Wow! I am so impressed and it’s like I left with a friend in South Africa! I will bring my family back and do another tour with Candy!
The ferry ride was rough and very bumpy. The island only accepted cash for waters and snacks which we didn’t bring and no one told us in advance so we were not prepared. The tour was very informative and it was interesting to get led around by someone who went to the prison. Definitely something to do if you have extra time.
The stories of the former prisoners are heart breaking. They are also inspiring because these people fought for their beliefs. They continue to teach us tolerance and respect for our fellow human beings.
The ex-prisoner guides brought the prison to life. Very moving.
interesting experience with great insight from an ex inmate, makes you realise how bad people can be to each other great views of the city from the boat and island added bonus with some wild penguins on the rocks at the snack/loo stop
Not just the sight, but the stories about the past and the people who told them made an impact. An walk through the past with an insight in how to build a future. Happy to have brought the next generation to feel this.
Absolutley amazing trip ! Very emotive and informative made all the better by having political prisoners who had lived in the jail as our guides. A serious must do in Cape town
Incredible experience. David, our guide was fantastic.
Very interesting tour of the grounds and the tour guide who spent time as a prisoner was fascinating and engaging. The overall experience from getting on the boat to getting back to the dock was almost 4h 45m, much longer than advertised. The coordination between when the tours on the island end and when the ferry boats leave is not smooth and we sat on the ferry at dock for about 45 minutes because the previous one left right before our tour ended. Give yourself a bit of extra time if you’re tightly scheduling.
Tickets can be purchased directly from the Robben Island Ticket Office. TripAdvisor did not supply a meet-or-greet, or a specific tour Guide. Robben Island provides the ferry, the bus tour and the former prisoner-based account of spending time at Robben Island. There were 200+ people crammed on a ferry over to the island and then we were sent to buses like cattle to tour the island first. The overall experience fell short of what could have been an amazing tour.
A great experience overall. Whilst the bus tour around the island is informative with a fabulous guide, the bus is dirty and old. I was in the middle with two seats between me and the window so saw absolutely nothing. Everything changed however once we entered the prison and the tour was conducted but an ex political prisoner. There just happened to be an ex guard on the tour who stood up with him and gave another perspective of life on Robben Island. It was graphic but not all history is a happy story. We all thought it was well worth the trip and came away better informed
This is an extremely worthwhile and somewhat sobering experience we were both very pleased we had committed the time to learn about and pay our respects to those heroes who gave so much for the anti apartheid cause. The former prisoner guide was very informative and I feel that add a great deal to the experience. I would 100% recommend this visit.
Truly humbling experience. The guides on the island shared their experiences in the most candid manner. This is a must do trip for anyone visiting Cape Town.
This is not a private tour. The tour is run by the Robben Island Museum, which runs the ferry and the tours through the prison. Guides, all former Robben Island inmates, tell it like it was from personal experience. Excellent!
One of the most moving tours I have ever been on. The atrocities these people suffered should be remembered always. The guides stories were so interesting and awful at the same time. My only complaint is it felt a little rushed through the buildings, I would have liked more time to look around.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Must-Do Experience in Cape Town! Our Robben Island half-day tour was one of those experiences that really stays with you. I’m so glad we decided to do it! Having our tickets pre-booked and our transfer already arranged made everything so much easier—we were able to enjoy the day without worrying about the details. A huge shout-out to Simon, who handled our transfer! He was absolutely wonderful—friendly, professional, on time, and made sure we knew exactly where we needed to be. Having someone take care of the transportation made the experience feel seamless from beginning to end. We also had Nior as our second tour guide, and he was fantastic. He added even more insight and context to the experience, helping us better understand the island’s history and significance. Once we arrived at Robben Island, the experience became so much more than just another excursion. Walking through a place with so much history and seeing the prison where Nelson Mandela spent so many years was incredibly powerful. The first part of the tour provided valuable historical background, while the final half was guided by an actual former prisoner. Hearing the stories directly from someone who experienced life inside the prison made the tour especially moving and personal. Hearing about what the prisoners endured during apartheid really puts things into perspective. There are some places you visit just to take pictures, and then there are places you visit that make you stop, listen, learn, and reflect. Robben Island was definitely one of those places for us. If you’re traveling to Cape Town, I highly recommend making time for this tour. The history alone makes it worth visiting, and having the pre-booked tickets, reliable transfer with Simon, and knowledgeable guidance from Nior made the entire experience even better. Definitely a memorable part of our South Africa adventure! 🇿🇦❤️
This tour was done with an ex prisoner. He gave us a lot of information what life was like in prison. He also told us what it is like now and how hard it is to make a living.
Ferry left on time and tour guide was very knowledgeable. Had a great time. The top deck on the Ferry fills fast. Cool to sit on the stern and look at the water and engines work.
Nice boat ride over to the island then you do a bus tour around the island and quite a bit of walking which was so nice. Lucky was our guide and he had spent 5 years in this prison and showed us the life of prisoners. He was very interesting. He really made the tour. The girl that was the speaker on the bus gave lots of good info. After getting off the bus we got a cookie and a water at a little store where you can see PENGUINS!!
I had the most amazing experience at Robben Island museum, from the historical visuals and explanations to the tour guide made it very worth it and I will most definitely go back again.
It was an incredibly moving experience and the tour guides were fantastic. So knowledgeable and one of the guides was a former political prisoner. It really gave you such an appreciation for how much they have accomplished.
The ferry was calm. On the island we saw the prison blocks and some of the older buildings. The former prisoner shared real stories about the hard days and how people kept going. A few light comments helped. Felt both sobered and grateful by the end.
The bus tour gave good context, then the prison walk made it personal. The ex-prisoner talked about the cells, the labour, and small acts of hope. A couple of unexpected jokes lightened the mood. Left feeling thoughtful.
The ferry was fine. On the island we saw the prison blocks and some of the older buildings. The former prisoner shared real stories about the hard days and how people kept going. A few light comments helped. Felt both sobered and grateful.
Excellent tour if Robben Island, every moment was informative, including videos on the boat to and from the island, a general bus tour of the island narrated by a younger guide, and an in-depth tour of the prison led by a former political prisoner. He knew people wanted to see Nelson Mandela’s cell so he made sure to let us know we were going there, but we got great details on life for the prisoners, including an insane racial hierarchy on the quality of food. Very sad that many of the ex prisoners still seem to struggle even after the end of the apartheid regime. The boat logistics were handled smoothly and professionally.
We saw the prison blocks, the quarry, and older buildings. The former prisoner shared personal stories with calm strength. Standing in the small cells was the most powertul moment. Quiet and meaningful.
The prison walk with the ex-prisoner was the heart of the tour. He shared real experiences while we stood in the cells. The bus had shown the wider island earlier. Left feeling thoughtful and grateful.
The ferry ride was calm and amazing. On the island the bus tour gave a good overview, then the prison walk with the former prisoner made it personal. His Quiet and powerful stories evoked a new strength in us that we never had. I 1000% recommend this to all .
I had an excellent experience in August 2026. Everything was well organized, and the overall atmosphere was enjoyable and welcoming. The experience was definitely worth the price I paid. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the visit was enjoyable from beginning to end. The atmosphere made the experience even better, and although there were other visitors, the crowd did not take away from the experience. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone looking for something enjoyable and memorable. It was a great way to spend time during my trip, and I would happily do it again.
The combination of the bus tour and the prison section worked well. The ex-prisoner's honesty and occasional dry humour made the heavy history easier to take in. Felt reflective afterwards.
Pre-booked tickets made it easy. The island tour included the prison and surrounding sites. The guide's honesty about his time there was powerful. Felt both heavy and hopeful afterwards.
Inside the prison the guide spoke openly about his years there. We saw Mandela's cell and the communal areas. The bus had shown the wider island earlier. Left feeling quiet.
We walked through the cells while the ex-prisoner shared small details about daily life. The bus had shown us the quarry and older buildings earlier. Left the island feeling quiet and reflective.
The ferry was fine. On the island the bus gave context, then the prison walk with the former inmate made it personal. His stories about daily life and hope stuck with me. Reflective morning.
The experience exceeded my expectations because it was better and more enjoyable than I expected
It was such a nice boat ride there. I enjoyed the scenery and the history of the tour being explained. It felt nice to connect with my countries history.
Bus around the island first, then into the maximum security section. The guide's personal stories about life there made it real. Standing in those small cells was moving. Quiet ferry ride back.
