We had a great night with Lorette, learning about her food & culture. The meal of butter chicken & roti was great as was the Malva pudding for dessert. All washed down with a nice sauvignon Blanc. It was great to be able to go to a local home and understand food & culture. I highly recommend this experience to anyone wanting to enjoy South African food & culture in local home.

Itinerary
Choose between two private and authentic South African culinary experiences hosted in Lorette and Desmond's welcoming Cape Town home. Cape Malay Cooking Class: Join Lorette in her spacious kitchen for a hands-on cooking class where you'll prepare 2-3 traditional Cape Malay dishes using family recipes and fresh herbs from her garden. Depending on the season, your menu may include homemade rotis with Cape Malay chicken curry, bobotie served with yellow rice and vegetables, and warm malva pudding with custard. After cooking, sit down together to enjoy the meal you've prepared while learning about South African culture and daily life over local wine. Traditional South African Braai Class: Learn the art of a South African braai (barbecue), a cherished social tradition centered around cooking over an open fire. This interactive demonstration and hands-on experience includes favorites such as rosemary and garlic lamb chops, traditional boerewors sausage, garlic braai bread, grilled seasonal vegetables, creamy South African potato salad, and warm malva pudding with vanilla custard. Share the feast with your hosts over relaxed conversation and local South African wine.

Loretta was so friendly and a really great chef. Her recipes were easy to follow and super tasty. We had a wonderful time in her beautiful home. The highlight was making our own roti’s and of course eating the delicious food. Highly recommend this experience.
Fantastic morning in the kitchen learning how to cook butter chicken, roti and malva pudding. Authentic and friendly !
If you want to really delve into the Malay food and culture of South Africa, there is no better option than Lorette. She is welcoming and happy to share her home, history, and food. My husband and I love food and cooking but no prior cooking experience is needed. We made the most wonderful butter chicken, roti, and Malva pudding which we easily recreated - chicken and roti - back at home. Being with Lorette is like being with an old friend. She adeptly guided us through the steps for making the meal and then we all sat together eating and talking. It was one of the best experiences in a week of great memories. Don’t hesitate - book with Lorette!
This was such an awesome experience, I absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Cape Town. We cooked the best meal we had on our entire vacation (butter chicken is my new favorite dish) and just had an all-around excellent time. Do this cooking class! You won't regret it!
Working with Aashi at Traveling Spoon was great. She was efficient, timely and honest. I hope to work with her more often. Our experience cooking with Lorette and meeting her family was AWESOME. A definite highlight of our Cape Town visit. Lorette is a fabulous cook, her home is warm and inviting, she is a kind and patient teacher and lots of fun. Everyone in my group of 9 persons loved, loved the experience. They can’t wait to try her recipe of African traditional dishes at home.
AMAZING EXPERIENCE! Lorette is such a wonderful, generous host. We learned to cook South African dishes in a warm, welcoming home.
Spending our evening with Lorette was amazing. Her warm hospitality and experience with African recipes was exactly what we were looking for. She invited us into her beautiful home graciously and we shared so many wonderful stories. We prepared chicken curry, roti and malva pudding. The food was a 10/10 and the roti was a 12/10. The aromas filled the kitchen and it was a perfect evening. We chose her because of her 5 star reviews and our expectations were exceeded.
Had a lovely experience at Lorette’s home. She welcomed us into her family and we had a great time cooking some really great dishes.
Loretta is a wonderful hostess. My friends and I had a great time in her kitchen, cooking an authentic meal, and all were involved in the preparation. Nice relaxing atmosphere.
We had the best time meeting Lorette in her home, and learning how to cook scrumptious Cape Malay dishes! Would do it all again!
Fabulous Malay cooking class by Lorette! Warm and welcoming into her beautiful home. Delicious food after her easy to follow recipes! Absolutely a do not miss activity when in Capetown!
We did the cooking class with more eye early feb. She was an amazing host! Very friendly and knowledgeable! The recipes we made were amazing! Looking forward to making them for friends and family! Highly recommend Lorrette and her cooking class!
Relaxing way to spend a few hours and learn a few recipes. Our host was friendly and informative, happy to chat about cooking and living in the cape area. Having cooked a few simple dishes we got to enjoy them over an equally relaxing lunch.
We had a wonderful experience learning some Cape Malay cooking with Loretta in her beautiful home. Loretta was warm, friendly, generous and above all a really skilled chef!
Lorette was a gracious host and we thoroughly enjoyed our class with her. The food was delicious, the company was lovely, and we even met her cat Marmalade.
Lorette provided a 10/10 experience with her cooking class. To cook within her beautiful home such a vibrant meal and eat with her and her husband was very special. I highly recommend. The dish selections were delicious, she provided the recipes so we could try to recreate at home. Very lovely family and I wish them all the best!
Food was amazing, company even better!! The whole family loved this cooking experience and we came away with some great recipes that we will definitely try at home
From the moment Lorette opened her door and gave us a big hug, it was as if we had come home. She is an amazing person and an amazing cook, showing us the ins and outs of preparing an incredible meal. Then we sat down and shared it with her and her husband. I can understand how people want to stay in touch with her after their visit. You truly will feel like you are now part of her extended family. Do yourself a favor and get to know people while visiting Africa. This is one of the best ways to do it, through cooking and sharing a meal with Lorette.
My husband was sick and unable to accompany me. Lorette went to the trouble to make a custard to go with the Mavi pudding because my husband had eaten it at a restaurant and loved it (without the custard) which is the classic way to eat it I learned. She gave me to go boxes for him that included the pudding and the custard. He said it was BETTER than the restaurant. Very sweet and talented couple. I'd highly recommend.
Enjoyed a wonderful evening at Lorette's home with my wife and two friends. We learned about the history of Cape Malay Cooking and how it came to South Africa. A great memory of our trip to Cape Town!
The host couple, Lorette and Desmond, were extremely welcoming and gracious. Lorette planned a wonderful menu, and we are glad that the class allowed each of our family members to participate hands-on in its preparation. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, setting and learning more about their family and South Africa.
Lorette and Desmond were fantastic! We had such a great experience. They welcomed us like family. Despite a load shedding occurrence they had a backup plan and accommodated our family of 6 and their varying tastes. The food was delicious and we so enjoyed getting to know them and share a meal and cultural knowledge with them.
It was in private home clean and sanitize. The chef was personable knowledgeable and gave clear instructions. We were hands on in preparation she gave recipes and we ate the meal. Being a foodie this was so exciting I went out and purchased some of the ingredients to bring and prepare at home
Lorette was an amazing host. So friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed the great food and conversation and would definitely recommend. Outstanding experience!!
I loved the big welcome and hands on experience from the host and hostess. We immediately got into cooking and the meal we produced was delicious
Was not expecting anything like this and totally was the icing on the cake for my son and I’s trip to Cape Town. It’s nice eating out and trying new places, but nothing like learning and cooking your own dinner at another’s home and feeling like family. We were welcomed with open arms and will never forget this. Thank you kindly!
My husband and I spent wonderful evening with Lorette and Desmond learning about Malay food, history and culture. Preparing the food was enjoyable and we were allowed to have hands on experience cooking not just observing Lorette. The conversation over dinner was fun, entertaining, and educational. We highly recommend this cooking class.
Annika was such a sweet and incredible host! I had the privilege of being the first guest that cooked with her and the experience was so memorable. I especially enjoyed her teaching style— no sitting around here, she put me straight to work (which I loved)! Annika would demonstrate a technique and then let me do it; the hands on approach made it all more immersive. I was very impressed and delighted that Annika and I prepared all the dishes I requested such as boboti, cape Malay chicken curry and even Malva pudding. I made roti from scratch for the first time, which I am definitely excited to bring into my daily life. Annika was encouraging throughout the process, always stopping to show me again as needed and never making me feel rushed. She also taught me a lot about Cape Town history and politics, showing me a side that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. If I had another week in Cape Town, I would absolutely go back and learn more dishes from her. I highly recommend her and being around her amiable presence. Thank you, Annika!
Lorette made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. She j had the ingredients prowled & we made a wonderful meal. She walked us through how to make the curry & vegetable chicken main dish. We also had fun with making roti….everyone took a turn. Lorette is very skilled! We also prepared a yummy dessert (the name escapes me). The evening was wonderful!👏👍 I feel like we made friends as well as preparing a very tasty meal. I highly recommend this if want an intimate & local experience’
