Loved our experience at Allée Bleue. The lady (Sino) was so gracious and willing to share her knowledge with us with the patience of a pre-school teacher! We absolutely recommend for any couple ♥️

Smooth morning pickup from Sea Point Langs Township showed the real everyday Capetown, shebeens, street art and warm people. District Six Museum was quite and powerful rooms filled with artifacts, forced removal notice and heartbreaking family stories. Our guide's light humour helped a lot
Listen, when I booked a boat trip to an island, I was secretly hoping for cocktails and maybe a dolphin show. Instead, I got a powerful history lesson and a ferry ride that felt more like a reflective therapy session with a sea view lol ! The boat was clean and comfortable, the video was actually interesting, and the ex prisoner who guided us through the prison was an absolute legend. He had this perfect mix of serious storytelling and dry humour that somehow made the heavy stuff easier to digest. Standing in Mandela’s tiny cell made me realise my apartment is actually luxurious. This isn’t your typical touristy fun day it’s heavy, important, and surprisingly uplifting. Highly recommend if you want to leave Cape Town a little wiser (and slightly guilty about complaining when your connection is slow).
Nice and easy ferry crossing with a clean boat. The video helped set the scene before arriving. Both the bus and prison guides were good, but the ex-prisoner really stood out. He didn’t try to impress us, he just told his truth. Hearing about the conditions and how people kept going really stayed with me. A serious but very worthwhile experience.
The sea was kind to us on the way to Robben Island. Clean ferry, nice views, and a decent introductory video. I expected the prison part to be interesting, but it was actually quite emotional. Our ex-prisoner guide spoke softly but his words carried so much weight. He showed us where they slept and worked and answered every question with patience. Left the island feeling thoughtful and grateful
I almost skipped this tour but I’m so happy I didn’t. The boat was comfortable, the video helpful, and the ex-prisoner guide inside the prison was outstanding. He explained things in such a straightforward and human way. No drama, just honest stories from someone who actually lived it. The whole experience gave me a much deeper appreciation for what happened here. Strongly suggest going.
Ferry was fine, boat was clean, video was okay. The bus tour gave decent context. But the ex-prisoner guide inside the maximum security prison was something else. The way he spoke about his 12 years there without bitterness but with clear honesty really touched me. Left the island feeling more aware and grateful.
Finally did the Robben Island tour as a local and it moved me more than I expected. Hearing real stories straight from someone who was imprisoned there was incredibly powerful. The boat ride was nice too. Every visitor to Cape Town should do this.
Clean boat, useful video, and clear bus commentary. The standout was the ex-prisoner guide patient, dignified, and willing to answer every question. He made the prison feel personal rather than just historic. A very respectful and well-run experience.
Beautiful views on the ferry, very moving prison tour thanks to the ex-prisoner’s storytelling. Educational, emotional, and well organised. Would do it again.
From the comfortable ferry and helpful video to the island itself, everything ran smoothly. The bus commentary was good, but the ex-prisoner guide stole the show. He walked us through Mandela’s cell and shared both difficult and hopeful stories, even throwing in a bit of humour. His personal touch made the whole history feel alive. HYM handled the transfers perfectly. A must do tour.
The ferry ride over to Robben Island surprised me in a good way , smooth sailing, good seating, and the onboard video provided excellent background information. The boat was spotless both ways. The coach commentary on the island was professional and gave us a solid overview of the key areas. What really stood out was the ex-prisoner who guided us through the prison his calm, sincere way of describing daily life and the conditions there was incredibly impactful. He answered questions patiently and made the history feel personal. This was a meaningful and well-organised experience.
We woke up early and drove 2 hours through traffic for the 9:00 am (8:30am boarding) tour. They called me 15 minutes before we were supposed to meet to cancel. Although it was cancelled due to the rough seas, I am pretty sure that they could have called much sooner.
Ticket system should not be trusted - we booked for 30th December and on the day as requested we downloaded out tickets to find they had booked 9th March / then had to sit for 40 mins whilst they sorted it out!! Robben island is amazing and the guides are amazing but the whole thing is far too rushed and disorganised - not worth £50 per head
Didn’t show up so had to re purchase tickets from the tickets office. No communication from them so will be chasing a refund from viator.
Informational and it was sad to hear. Good opportunity to learn about and important part in history.
Robben Island is an experience not to be missed while in Capetown. You will definitely be given a lesson in reslience of the human spirit by those who have endured unimaginable conditions and treatment. Thank you Max for sharing your story and helping us to understand the history of Robben Island.
An absolute must visit - very interesting and the Prison tour by an ex Political prisoner was incredible. Only thing is that it went on probably half an hour too long. Would recommend.
I had the best Experience, it was an exciting to see where Nelson Mandela was prisoned and the tour guides were very helpful on this tour .
The Experience to Robben Island was great to see where Nelson Mandela was Prisoned for 27 years and the tour guides were very helpful , i had so much fun .
I strongly advise against purchasing this tour through this provider. They charge nearly three times the price of the standard Robben Island ticket, yet offer no added value in return. There’s no personalized experience, no smaller group, and no guided service beyond what is already included in the official tour. In reality, they are simply reselling the ticket you could easily book yourself via the official Robben Island website — at a fraction of the cost. Save your money and book directly. Don’t fall for this overpriced listing.
This was a very touching tour giving a first hand account of the hardship for the political prisoners of Robben Island. The presenter gave a first hand account of his time on the island a a factual presentation allowing time for questions from all ages. I highly recommend this tour to kids and adults of all ages.
A calm 35 minute cataman ride to the island. We were assigned buses for 45 minute guided bus tour around the island with a stop off at a cafe. Guide was clear. We were dropped off at the prision where our tour with ex prision mate Jama, a very unassuming and quiet man talked about life in the prision for his 5 years there. If it was not for people like him ( who lead a protest) things would not change. A true hero. It must be bitter sweet talking about something that robbed you of some freedom
The sea journey was enhanced as we saw a pod of dolphins. It was a long wait to board our boat and the posters and videos were very informative. It would have been great that this information. Had been repeated on board too - there were TVs. The coach tour around the island was rather quickly done with little opportunity for photos - if you were on the wrong side of the coach you missed it! However our guide was very informative. A passionate delivery by our prison guide Tom made it so real. He was brilliant and kept it light in parts too. This facility must never been closed although I understand the SA government have withdrawn funding. Wouldn’t have missed this for the world and would recommend it to all adults. I’m not sure it’s for young children though.
Great communication, organized, comfortable boat! Land tour, organized, comfortable, Informative, powerful! Felt a little bit rushed at times Wanted, rest stop and gift shop visit but too rushed.
For the price, I expected a more. Ferry ride was smooth. Got off at the island and told to get on the tour bus, which simply took us through the gate. We were a large group, around 40 people, and it was difficult to hear the guide speaking while we were outside. In addition, he would speak while walking, and those at the back couldn't hear him. He also started speaking before everyone was caught up. We only went into one communal cell in B block, where he gave us a brief history and revealed he had been a political prisoner. After that, we walked to a different section to see cells, one of which Mandela had been in. Unfortunately, 3 large groups arrived at once, all crammed into the hallway of cells, and I did not get to see Mandela's cell, which was my main purpose of attending the tour. After that, we were put on another bus and driven to see 4 different areas. We were not allowed off the bus due to previous bad behaviour of other tourists. The only stop where we got off the bus was to see penguins. Overall, very disappointed
At reception in Robben Island I realised I had been hugely overcharged by Viator. The ferry was late and took one hour. The first part on the bus was not good. The PA system was poor, the content poor. Meeting the man in the prison who knew Mandela was memorable. He was a wonderful man.
Really enjoyed the tour from start to finish. The guides were excellent and full of information. Very moving experience.
Our driver guide Tom was on time for our pickup and made sure that we got the front seat which were comfortable our guide from the island was a former inmate who shared his stories he was knowledgeable. Everything went smoothly
Our tour guide HITIMANA YVES MURASHI, was excellent and very informative, my family learnt a lot he was a great tour guide. My family and I could not ask for anything more. I am sure to tell others about my trip to Cape Town.
Visiting Robben Island, South Africa, was not just a trip; it was an emotional journey through history. This island, where Nelson Mandela and other freedom fighters were imprisoned for years during apartheid, holds immense significance. The experience left me with a profound sense of respect for those who endured unimaginable hardships for the cause of freedom and justice. Getting to Robben Island The day began with a drive to the port in Cape Town, courtesy of a kind and helpful young man from Brooklyn, a vibrant suburb of Cape Town. His warmth and hospitality set the tone for the day, offering insights into the city and its rich history. Once at the port, we boarded a ferry to Robben Island. The ride itself was scenic, with views of Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain and the surrounding coastline. Exploring Robben Island Upon arrival, we boarded a bus for a guided tour of the island. Our guide, a passionate and knowledgeable woman, shared the island’s layered history—from its early days as a leper colony to its dark era as a maximum-security prison. She also touched on the island’s role in South Africa’s fight for democracy. Her narration brought the island’s stories to life, making every stop feel like a step back in time. Significant Stops on the Island 1. The Limestone Quarry This was where prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, performed hard labor under brutal conditions. The quarry stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of those who fought for justice. 2. The Prison Complex The highlight of the tour was the visit to the secure prisoner compound. Here, a former prisoner, who had spent seven years on the island, served as our guide. His firsthand account of life in the prison was both harrowing and inspiring. He spoke of the harsh conditions, the camaraderie among prisoners, and their unwavering spirit to overcome adversity. Standing in Nelson Mandela’s tiny cell was a poignant moment, offering a glimpse into the physical and psychological toll of imprisonment. Wrapping Up the Visit Before returning to the ferry, we explored a small shop where I purchased books and mementos to commemorate the trip. These keepsakes serve as constant reminders of the courage and sacrifice of those who shaped South Africa’s history. The Ferry Ride Back The return ferry ride allowed for reflection. Watching the island fade into the distance, I thought about the incredible stories of perseverance and hope that unfolded there. The beauty of the ocean contrasted sharply with the grim history of the island, leaving me with a mix of emotions—sadness for the suffering endured and admiration for the triumph of the human spirit. Final Thoughts Visiting Robben Island was a deeply moving and educational experience. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Cape Town, offering not only a deeper understanding of South Africa’s past but also a reminder of the enduring fight for freedom and equality. The tour was well-organized, and the guides—especially the former prisoner—added an invaluable personal touch to the experience. This was an exceptional tour and emotional see how the political prisoners were treated one of them shared his testimony about the life he went through it broke my heart that we could treat people this way
Very educational experience from the former prisoners who went through hell during the struggle of Apartheid. Billy the former political prisoner talked about his time. I cried just to see how a human suffered physically and emotional. Our tour was a little bit rushed but didn’t stop me to see the whole view of the Table Mountain and Lion’s Head together
The tour were cancelled on me due to weather conditions I’m not holding responsible the tour operator only issue I had was that they didn’t tell me before so I can make other plans total disappointed that I couldn’t make the trip maybe next time.
Robben island was beautiful but wished for more quitec time together, thsnks to the drive, Mr Yves , he makes our day so special.
Great views on Robben Island but tour guide spoke too quickly , Will suggest more interactive exhibits as well. But was good journey of self discovery.
Robben Island tour was informative, but the guide spoke too softly And wished for more time at Mandela’s cell. Thank to everyone who make my tour day to be done well . .

As I stood alone on the rugged shores of Robben Island, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of connection to the generations of freedom fighters who once walked this very same ground. Grateful for Robben Island knowledgeable Guide
