Rio Secreto was an incredible experience, our guide, Isabel was wonderful, very knowledgeable and happily answered questions and took time to explain things in detail 10 out of 10 recommend
Had an amazing time. Jorge our tour guide was amazing. His knowledge of the areas was vast and he was beyond helpful. Keep in mind this tour is a little bit of a workout. Would definitely recommend going
Rio Secreto was amazing. Really cool experience. Jen was a great guide. Transportation was great. Would have liked a better idea of pickup. Everything said 7;30 but they showed up at 7 and we didn’t have a chance to eat breakfast.
Beautiful place and all the people
Excellent guides, amazing adventure. Ana was very knowledgeable. She’s funny and so good with the caves.
Hello. We booked our Coba and Rio Secreto tour through our Amstar Rep., Omar, who was at the Barcelo Maya Colonial. Omar was great, got us a good price, and set it for Monday May 18th. They were on time to pick us up with a minor glitch but we went to Rio Secreto fist. Our guide was Aaron and he was fantastic. This was my first time going to RS and Aaron gave us great direction, safety issues, and helped anyone who needed any extra help. My wife and I are at the 70 mark so she and another lady close to our age needed some extra safety support. Safety was a key for Aaron which we all appreciated. For all newcomers there, they provide lockers (you carry the key around your neck), towels, wet suits, and water shoes. You do NOT have to wear the wet suit if you choose not to, and, you can bring your own wet shoes if you choose. Plus, they provide a lamp helmet for underground. Caution, a lot of the ground in the water cave is uneven so you have to drag your feet and pay close attention to drop offs. Our guide was on top of everything telling us ever facet during the underground water tour. We were underground for maybe 45 min and when changed into dry clothes, we had a very nice 30 min. break at a covered buffet lunch there. Our driver to Coba was Louis who was fun to talk to and he had a great sense of humor. Took us maybe an hour plus to get to Coba. This was my 3rd trip to Coba in less than 20 years and had two other guides who were good. Aaron was the best I've seen so far. I had climbed the ruins twice but this year I did not, as well as my wife. Just too dangerous at our age, but we had a great time talking to Aaron our guide, other folks. Aaron stayed with us the entire time and gave us great overviews of the smaller ruins on the return bike ride back to the ruins entrance. BTW, bikes come with the tour so you need to be able to go the distance which is about 15 minutes riding in the jungle to get to the main ruins. My wife did not want to ride a bike so we hired a driver, Jose, for about $13.00 plus tips, to drive us on a 2-seat tricycle. We had ample time to enjoy the ruins, spend a few min. in the gift shop, restrooms, etc.; they gave us bottle water, most important, you were allowed to bring your own water into the park comparted to the very intrusive policies present to visit Tulum (we were there in Sept. 2025), where they do not allow you bring any type of plastic water into the park there. Coba is much more relaxed Overall, Coba was the better excursion for us and we did enjoy Rio Secreto. I doubt we would return to RS but we got it off our bucket list. I doubt I would get tired of Coba, very rich in history and.....sometimes you see wildlife in the jungle. This trip we did not. Once again, we were very thankful to our Amstar Rep. at Barcelo Maya Colonial, Omar, our Guide, Aaron, and our driver - Louis. We hope you visit Coba and Rio Secreto in the future! Mr. and Mrs. K. Mango (our Alias)
This is such an incredible time. Pepe was a fantastic guide you can really tell he loves his job. Such a must do adventure
Our family of four absolutely loved this combo tour during our trip to Cancun. The day started smoothly with an on-time pickup from our hotel lobby in a comfortable passenger van. After a few stops at other hotels, we arrived at Rio Secreto. We got changed, geared up with wetsuits, PFDs, and helmets, and after a short walk, descended into the cave system. Wading and floating through the caves was truly unforgettable—such an incredible experience. Our guide, Diana, was fantastic: incredibly knowledgeable, passionate about the local flora and fauna, and full of great energy that made the tour even more enjoyable. After the cave adventure, we changed again, enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, and then boarded a small bus to Coba. The drive took about an hour and a half. Once there, we grabbed bikes (with the option to upgrade to a three‑wheeled bike with a driver) and rode to the pyramid. We were able to climb to the top and spend about 10 minutes enjoying the amazing view. After heading back down, we biked along the trail with a few stops along the way where Diana gave us great information about the culture and history, spent some time browsing the gift shop outside the park, and then boarded the bus back to our hotel, arriving about two hours later. Overall, it was an amazing day from start to finish—and Diana made it even better!
Amazing with spectacular views. One of the experiences in our lives. Well worth it, and get the photo package
We had an amazing experience with Rio Secreto. Our guide was Tianara and she was genuinely the greatest guide we’ve had on an excursion ever. She was kind, friendly and very knowledgeable. She made sure everyone was safe and comfortable, kept us in the loop with plans and made sure we had the best time. I’d do any excursion with her again- even so, the caves were a magical and special experience, I would go back in a heartbeat. We combined it with Coba, had an amazing buffet in between and got to experience the ruins on bicycles. The caves are like nothing we’ve experienced before, the water was perfect and the experience will last a lifetime. I can’t think Tianara enough, and would recommend her and the Rio Secreto + Coba tour to anyone I know going to the Yucutan. Thank you for the most amazing experience!
Enjoyed it all. All equipment needed provided with no extra cost. Our guide spoke English well and was patient, not rushing anyone. After lunch our drive to Coba was a little bit more urgent, but we got there safely and did the climb and saw the rest. The trip back was very traffic heavy which made being in the van a long time and a little uncomfortable, but there was only 9 of us so a van was appropriate.
A great experience all round. Everyone enjoyed the underground river and Rona. Shout out to Aaron - he did a great job as our tour guide! Thank you!
This was by far the best excursion that we have been to in the ten years that we’ve been going to Mexico. Fernando and Shirley were simply the best, so passionate about preserving the ecosystem. Wonderful tour guide.
We had an enjoyable day exploring a beautiful cenote and Coba ruins. Our guide Tiana was very knowledgeable in her history and we learned so much about the places we visited. We felt very rushed at our visit to Coba which was regretful. It was so fun riding bikes to the ruins but we were all pushed to hurry up. At one point our guide was so far ahead of the group she wasn'teven aware that another group member had crashed head on into a tree and fallen. Once reaching Coba you have a very small window of time to climb and return down. At the days end we were offered the photo package. There are only 25 photos from your day and when we opened it up the close up couples shots were of another couple in our group and not us. We found the photographer rushed each person as well and didn't take the time to get a good photo, ex. eyes closed , not in position yet, and then would say, come on..ok next! let's go! For this you are charged $100 US. This included their own gallery as well.Overall, the beauty of the country is undeniable and we had a great day .
This is an all day adventure going from the heights of the Nora’s Mul pyramid in Coba to the underground amazing world of Rio Secreto. From pickup to drop off was 10 hours, so be prepared as it’s 1.5 hours each way to Coba, and then takes time for dropping off at various locations. Well worth it though as it was an amazing day! It wasn’t mentioned anywhere that in Coba you go from site to site (about 2 km total) on bicycles, although there is also an option to rent a bike buggy and get taken from place to place. The bikes worked fine for the short distance. Amazing to be able to go up the 140 steps to the top of the pyramid - the steps are quite deep so may be difficult for those with bad knees. Our guide, Jorge, was great and had good knowledge of Coba. Back to Rio Secreto for the buffet lunch which had a pretty good selection of hot & cold foods. Time to get changed into bathing suits & water shoes - absolutely recommend wearing the shortie wetsuit as well. Water shoes are available although we brought our own & helmets with head lamps & life vests (mandatory) and plastic walking poles (optional but very useful) were provided. It was a fairly long walk to the entrance, and once inside be prepared for walking on uneven rocks/ limestone, swimming in deeper sections & traversing through narrow or height restricted spaces. This is not a trip for anyone with mobility restrictions although the walking poles do help with balance & feeling for under water obstacles. It is absolutely amazing to be underground in a secret river with beautiful stalactite & stalagmite formations. They take great care to protect that environment & to ensure the safety of everyone. Floating in the water in the pitch black with the headlamps off was a beautiful experience. This was our 2nd time at Rio Secreto & it was just as enjoyable as the first time. Jorge was an excellent guide with very good English & knowledge and it was evident that he loves his job. Highly recommend this tour!
Action packed day of adventure from the heights of Coba to the depths of Rio Secreto. Great day and a fantastic variety to go from Coba to Rio Secreto. Jorge was a fabulous tour guide with good knowledge, excellent English and obviously loves his job. Be prepared for an active day of walking, cycling, climbing and under ground spelunking through uneven terrain. It was a memorable day for sure!
Great excursion. Riding around the ruins on bikes was really fun. Rio secreto afterwards was a fun and varied activity. The caves are amazing!
Miguel excellent tour guide. Knowledgeable, funny, and very helpful. He made the tour fun and enjoyable experience for all.
The Rio Secreto - Coba trip was great. Our guide Diego was tremendous. The logistics all ran perfectly. One important note - you must be agile and sure/fitted to get to the Rio Secreto. They assured me I would be able to do it - and I could not. My son went ahead and enjoyed the experience but said there was no way I’d be able. He is a healthy 19 year old and even struggled at some points. Coba was awesome and there are rickshaws available with lovely drivers if you need mobility help. Overall, great trip, just go in eyes wide open if you have any sport of mobility issue.
Great experience, Fernando was our guide he was fantastic truly passionate about history and the natural world. Highly recommend going coba was very interesting and the caves were amazing.
Did not show up at hotel when expected from booking. No communication prior to tour date. Did not call or message me. Trying to get my money back.
Absolutely incredible tour filled with so much information and education for our children. It was the highlight of our vacation.
Overall great tour - highly recommend!! Went with my mom (38F, 63F). Pickup was timely, drive to Rio Secreto was quick. There was a bit of waiting while the guides figured out the groups but we were told we'll be doing the Rio first and then go to Coba. The group was small for the caves and Diana was our guide. Diana was absolutely incredible - patiently helped my mom through the rough terrain of the cave and through swimming in the cool water so she was able to enjoy the activity despite being uncomfortable in water. The caverns are a must-experience, they are stunning! A small Mayan ceremony and a toast with Xtanbentun is included, both were very nice! The only issue is the photos: While I understand no cameras are allowed due to distractions/safety etc. the friendly photographer made an effort and got fantastic pictures and then we were extorted for $30 per photo, which we refused to pay. If the photos had been $10 per picture, we'd have probably spent $30-40, so lose-lose situation all around. The photographer worked for nothing and we didn't get any pictures of an incredible experience. Buffet lunch was good with fresh tortillas and drive to Coba was smooth. In Coba, our whole group took the rickshaw option (additional $11) which was good, and Diana was very knowledgeable about the ruins and culture. Main pyramid was closed to climbing (which would have been awesome), but we were told it should open soon. I liked Coba because it was cool to see the ruins within the jungle. Drive back was much longer (3hrs back to Cancun) as we got unlucky with the group needing to be dropped off all around the Riviera Maya but the driver was super nice and apologetic that it took so long (no fault of his). 12hr total trip despite the long drop-offs, well worth the price! Would highly recommend this tour for the whole family, and Diana as a guide!
This was an incredibly fun, educational, and minimally challenging adventure for a half dozen Sixty somethings! Allen was our guide and did an amazing job. Words really can't describe the experience. Hike down a little through the jungle, then walk, swim, and crawl a mile or so through the cave while avoiding a myriad of stalactites and stalagmites. A photographer accompanies each group. Ours, Alexis, took some fun photos. He was also Allen's 'backup', but fortunately he was able to concentrate on photography during our time under ground. Personal cameras and phones are left with your clothes in a supplied locker. Wear your swim wear and bring dry clothes for sure and a towel if you can. They supply the water shoes - use them since the underwater rocks will tear yours up. Our tour was just over 4 hours from arrival to departure, including preparation and the post adventure lunch. Our cost was around $100 US per person (including wet suit, shoes, helmet, life vest, lock and locker, and lunch) and well worth it. The six of us are all strong swimmers, but there were a couple adult non swimmers in the combined tour group of twelve. There were a few places where swimming was helpful, but everyone had life jackets and wet suits and Allen helped the swim challenged folks float the couple times the water was over our heads. The bus travel is broken up into two legs, hotel to the check-in / lunch / gift shop area and another 15-20 minute 'bumpy' van ride to the entrance of the cave. We had a nice Mexican buffet lunch after the adventure and of course we chose to purchase the >100 amazing digital pics Alexis took along the way as well as a few trinkets! I was impressed how well they divided the pics of the six of us from pics of the rest of the tour. Probably some AI involved, but impressive just the same. All told we were probably away from the hotel a little over six hours for the half day adventure. Allen is fluent in Spanish and English. He seamlessly explained everything we did and saw in both languages since a few of the folks that joined our group spoke only Spanish and we all speak only English. Other than as noted above, my main recommendation would be to NOT take a child under 8, at least 12 if the child doesn't swim well. While we all helped each other navigate the rocks and water as needed, the kid will have to be able to traverse both the land and the water by themselves since the parent will be doing the same. On our tour, there is really no way to carry a frightened or unhappy child. The stalactites come out of nowhere and if you aren't playing attention - it hurts, even with a helmet! I honestly have no idea if they offer a more kid friendly excursion. Bottom line be adventurous! it's very fun, informative, and safe.
Coba and Rio Secreto are very impressive. Our tour guide, Jen, was very kind, knowledgable and gave a very informative tour of the ruins and caves. Rio Secreto is a must see and a great way to escape the heat. We do not regret either destination. I will say our day was dampened by the feeling that we were mostly just tolerated because we are from the United States. I understand, given recent policies but it was a bummer to hear employees and our Coba driver complain about us in Spanish right in front of us, unaware that I could understand most of what they were saying.
Amazing experience. A bit scary at first but I’m glad I did it. I cannot swim and I was able to do this activity with my family which also includes a 10yr old. Guide was super knowledgeable and friendly. Coba tour was cool also but it was hot because we went I July and I was dying for air conditioning. Lol. But it was great and I would do it again.
We had the most amazing day visiting Rio Secreto and the Mayan ruins at Coba. I was really unsure what to expect, we booked the trip from the UK and the info we received was limited. We were picked up from our hotel and taken to Rio Secreto, there we met our guide Ana and the other people on our tour. The group was of 9 people half French speakers and half English. Ana switched seamlessly between the two languages ensuring that we were all prepared for the tour ahead. The caves and waterways of Rio Secreto were incredible; of course it was a shame that we couldn’t take any pictures, but this didn’t mar the trip too much - hence the 5 star review. Ana ensured we got through the cenotes safely, I did scrape my knee, this was quickly treated with peroxide once we were back at the changing area. I definitely would recommend using the wetsuits as the water is cool. Coba is beautiful, largely how they found it years ago. Much quieter than Chichen itza, we got bikes to tour round it. Once again Ana astounded us with her knowledge and the ability to write upside down 🤣. In total we were away from the hotel 11:30 hours but it was well worth it.
Great trip.. loved everything.. one small thing.. you can't take photos in Rio Secreto.. but you can buy them after for price of gold bricks..
Bring water breakfast and extra snacks! You won't get the water or snacks until you get to Coba, lunch is between Rio Secreto and Coba. You will go to Rio Secreto first, then to Coba. There are 4 routes at Rio Secreto, joy, supreme, palace and enchanted, they will pick the route. They provide water shoes, life vest( mandatory) and a wetsuit if need one. Bring dry clothing and credit card to buy pictures $30- $160( get 3 free anything on the shelves and all pictures with the $160 price). When you go to Coba, you will ride bikes all the way through the park and then backcheck the brakes! If you're not able to ride a bike, they have a more comfortable Mayan uber. If you plan on buying anything at the ruins being pesos! Only 17 exchange unless have credit card. You will have a total of 4 bus rides the whole trip, 2 long, 2 short. This is an ALL DAY EXCURSION! If bring children definitely bring extra food and beverages. This time of year, you don't need bug spray, I saw no Mosquitos. Bring dollars or pesos for the small tips. Last, do not put on sunscreen until Coba for Rio Secreto you will get wet and swim at times. They make you take a pre shower.
Awesome experience. Our guide was excellent. Everything is included (admissions to Coba and Rio Secreto, plus water shoes/wetsuit/headlamp and locker at Rio Secreto, transfers by bus). We stopped by Rio Secreto briefly first to do registration, then went to Coba, then lunch, then back to Rio Secreto to actually go in the cenote. Coba has amazing ruins and the added plus is there's lots of trees so everything is shaded (very nice on a hot day). Riding bikes around the archeological site was fun and the history was cool to learn about. Rio Secreto's underground river was unbelievable. It was like a mystical experience. I did a different cenote in the area during my last trip to Yucatan but this one was bigger, longer, and had more amazing formations.
Bring water and breakfast to start the morning! Don't get water or snacks until Coba part, lunch in-between. You will go to Rio Secreto first then Coba, it's cool! You have 4 routs, joy, supreme, palace, enchanted. They provide water shoes. Bring dry clothes. If transport from Cancun you will not get back until after 6pm! They drop off all the way back to Cancun in order of highway back. Bring a hat! You will ride bikes all the way into Coba ruins and back. If cannot ride a bike they have other forms for a ride that is comfortable. If want to buy anything in US at coba Bring pesos, cost less in pesos!! Bring tip money for all the van rides you take(4 total, 2 long , 2 short) If have kids definitely bring extra food and water!! It's an ALL DAY EXCURSION! George was awesome, super social and funny! He was great, ask for him!!
Combining an exploration of Rio Secreto with a visit to the Mayan archeological site of Coba made for a wonderful day. Entering the dark caves and wading or occasionally floating through the underground river in a wetsuit wearing a helmet with lamp was quite a fun adventure. Throughout is beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Absolutely stunning. It was a truly unique and memorable experience. We then made the 80-minute drive to see the ancient Mayan ruins of Coba. While not as famous as Chichén Itza, it was still a remarkable sight. A number of ancient structures including temples and pyramids are spread throughout the jungle including the Nohoch Mul Pyramid known as Ixmoja which is one of the tallest pyramids on the Yucatán peninsula standing at 138 feet. After a guided tour of the area nearest the entrance, a rental bike is provided so that you can see these other ancient structures. The entire tour from start to finish is well organized. I was picked up at the time expected at my resort in Playacar and the bus then made several other stops picking up other guests and we eventually headed to the Rio Secreto. After watching an instruction video, we were organized into our specific groups depending on what tour you had booked and were then fitted with all the necessary equipment including a wetsuit, life jacket, water shoes and a helmet with lamp. Changing rooms and lockers are provided. My only dislike was that we were not allowed to bring any phones or cameras into the underground caves and had to purchase the overpriced photo package if you wanted any photos from inside. It would be nice if they offered an inexpensive single photo from the tour, but the photo packages started at $40-50+ and included 20 or more photos which is completely unnecessary. I didn't see anyone on our tour purchasing at the end of the tour and I think they are missing out on an opportunity. Nevertheless, it was still an amazing experience. We then had a nice buffet lunch featuring local cuisine before making the 80-minute bus ride to Coba as described above. The coach bus was comfortable, and I met some great fellow travelers on the ride. Keep in mind that you may need to make a lot of stops at other resorts at the end of the tour before arriving at your destination. Unfortunately, I was the final stop and after the 90-minute drive back to Playa del Carmen, we spent an additional hour driving all around the town before arriving at my resort. Not a big deal but plan accordingly. In summary, this was an amazing experience, and I would highly recommend to those who are interested in history and natural beauty and can tear themselves away from the beach or pool for the day.
Booked with Air Transat, doing the combination of Rio and Coba in the same day is intense considering the travel time and the numerous stops to pick up people. OTHERWISE very happy to have done it. Rio Secreto is magnificent, disappointed to have done it before Coba. Note that it is forbidden to take photos.
Secret River is a tour that you will remember for life.
Everything is well arranged, transport from hotel to Rio Secreto and back. The disadvantage of the underground cave tour is that you are not allowed to bring a camera or oid. The cameraman does his best but it's all much of the same. This is also due to the outfit everyone is wearing; wetsuit, helmet and life jacket. And then as a family (4p) you have to pay 135 USD to get the pictures. Absurd. Such a shame about this beautiful experience. (On another tour, Maya ruins Tulum, swimming with sea turtles Akumal Bay and tour cenote, there was a photographer with it all day and we paid 80 USD for many beautiful photos, with much more variety) 2nd part of the tour went towards the Mayan city of Cobá. Well arranged, cycling through the jungle to the various structures. Beautiful all and our guide of the day, Isabel, knew a lot about it. Fortunately we were allowed to take pictures ourselves 😉 By the price of the pictures a 3, otherwise definitely a 5!!
It is very far from Ocean Allure Costa Mujeres. 2h30 transport on a Monday morning for the outward journey, and 1h50 for the return journey in the early afternoon. To fully enjoy, take the classic tour with zip line bike and others.
Really a great outing and experience! We were guided by imelda who made us have a great day. Lots of very clear explanations. A great guide. Rio secreto is a magical place and coba is also amazing in the heart of the selva. Recommended with teens!
Excellent experience, a wonderful adventure to enjoy nature and its caverns..Amazing lunch, friendly staff
Our guide Fernando is a pro! Many explanations/rely only on evidence. The cave is fantastic
