Very little English. The Valladolid church is awesome the Mayan village is a storefront and the buffet was lacking. It seemed like leftovers from other meals including breakfast and last nights dinner.

We went today to the cenote and chitchen itza with mayab tours. The tour cost £160 GBP per couple and we booked with s street vendor outside the ferry port in Cancun. We were told to be at our hotel lobby for 7am, the coach arrived at ten to. We hopped on board, all fine but at the next hotel was a 15 minute wait, of course things happen we were understanding. The next one and the one after was the same though, over an hour and a half waiting in total for people to board the coach! Eventually we set off, the staff were polite bringing us our sandwich bag we had paid extra for, no crisps or cookies as advertised just an apple (we paid for the deluxe package there was 3 types) First stop was a "Mayan village" (45 mins) there was not much there I was expecting ruins, huts and handmade trinkets but it was a shaman blessing gifts bought from the shop. The shop was really expensive (wait until chitchen itza, massive market) we were supposed to get a drink included but we weren't given our wrist bands in time so we had to wait until our next stop... Frustrating as we had stickers saying we had a deluxe package so we should've been able to grab a drink. We moved onto the cenote afterwards which was gorgeous but felt very rushed we only ended up with about 25 minutes in the water as we had to eat lunch get changed and get to the cenote and there was no time left. The buffet included wasn't to our taste, the nachos were stale, it was very much catered to Spanish and mexican tastes which of course we are in Mexico, so we just bought our own lunch (not expensive but not much choice) Our biggest issue and reason for the low mark really is the tour guide, I think it would've been excellent if you speak spanish. We were 4 of 6 English speaking individuals and for the first 45 minutes plus of the tour on the bus it was all Spanish speaking, we didn't get any information in English (he was bilingual) we got the odd sentence but we felt very left out. Yes we're in Mexico and it's a Spanish country, we're not being silly, but we paid the same as everyone else and literally knew nothing about where to go or what to do, where to get things etc...There was lots of jokes in Spanish and people laughing but we didn't get told the jokes in English so no idea what it was about. It felt very segregated and as though we were just a burden. After my friend complained, there was more English but up until actually pulling a staff member to the side to ask questions we knew absolutely nothing. Chitchen itza was fabulous, very informative this time! Take plenty of money and haggle, we got some lovely gifts. On the way home we stopped at a mexican town and got 25 minutes there, it was really pretty, not advertised on the tour. We actually paid for 2 cenotes but ended up at one. Things felt a bit back to front, for example we were walking around chitchen itza wet. We would've liked to go straight to chitchen itza, then the cenote and onto the town on the way back, this would make more sense to u, but there must be a reason things are done differently. More information in English and I would've given a higher score, overall definitely do the tour, it's very worth it, but look into other operators. The coach ride is 2 hours 35 mins from Cancun.
Everything is good. The tour people was great. And the whole experience was amazing and very informative and very helpful
The tour operator never showed up despite me calling to confirm the Day before. I called viztor to get refund s d they would not issue. I got a message saying call them directly which I did and wasted an hour of my vacation time. I will now be forced to. All my credit card to dispute transaction
The first Shaman stop feels scammy. They have a shaman speak Mayan do a five minute ceremony and then you’re left to look at the gift store. I wish we didn’t do this. They took photos prior and put those photos on alcohol bottles to sell to us. Didn’t tell us beforehand could’ve not wasted their time by just asking who wanted one prior. Chichen Itza was good. The center was amazing and we had ample time to explore 2 hours. I would’ve preferred to spend longer at the cenote though. Also, the constant tip suggestions is kinda old either pay your employees more or raise the price of the tour. It’s clear tipping culture from America is trickling into Mexico, but not everyone is American.
Amazing love the pyramids not so much the humidity but overall amazing would definitely come back again
We were delivered back to our hotel hours after we were supposed to be dropped off since we had to go out of our way to drop off other tour members.
Only 2 hours in Chichen Itza and it is almost the last thing you do, you go there from 14:30 till 16:30 when its closing. It would be better to have more time in Chichen Itza and not visit a “mayan market” for 1 hour where you only have souvenirs. It was nor great, nor terrible. We enjoyed Chichen Itza but the rest of the activities felt just like a time-filler and tourist scam. Also at the end you go to visit town Valladolid for only 20 minutes, whats the point in that? Food was below average
The excursion was absolutely wonderful. The guides were awesome! I don't remember their names. When we were being left off, we were escorted to the gate of our hotel, it was dark and they didn't want 2 women walking alone. Very caring. Thank you.
I met Marco from Isla Mujeres Trips, Hidalgo Street, who was my best trip advisor! Thanks to him I booked for a day trip (14-15 h including ferry to Cancun). He gave me good advices for anything I could expect on the way including AC in the bus, taking a towel for a bath, timing etc. He answered all my questions and the trip was worth any cents spent on it! Not to mention I forgot my phone/camera! After panic attack I decided to be happy and just experience what life offers me. I met a guy on that trip asking him to take one photo of me and send it to me after all. I ended up with more pictures than I expected! On the trip I visited spiritual/souvenir Maya’s village Aldea, Cenote Xcajun, Chichen Itza, one of the 7 wonders, and Valladolid, ancient Maya city. Highly recommend Isla Mujeres Trips!!!!!
This felt like an absolute waste of a day, especially when you're only in Mexico for a week. This was a 15 hour excursion! The write up says 11 which even that seemed long but 15 hours is ridiculous. No where does it say how long the travel is. Over 8 hours of our day was on a bus. Then they waste another hour at a Mayan tourist trap where they try to push you to pay 70 dollars for a t shirt or 80 for a bracellete. The pyramids were cool to see but not worth it at all. Never again.
The bus left 1 hour later of the sceduled time. The guide (the name is Robert) was extremely unpolite and unefficient. He took more than 1 hour to buy the bracelets for Chichen Itza and he lost a lot time with the result that we arrived at Chichen Itza, the main attraction of the tour, at 4,00 PM and the site closed at 5,00. Only 1 hour of visit... Therefore the visit was in the hurry and we missed different buildings... Robert did not offered the included drinks on board until 3,00. And many other situations happened. When at the end of the tour he asked for the tip, almost nobody on the bus (50 pax) gave him the tip...
Tour guide spoke very little English, only understood a few words here and there. Tour made a stop that was not on the itinerary making the entire trip more like 15hrs. Once on the bus they upsold us for things I thought were already included like drinks. Air conditioning on the bus blasted making it unbearably cold.
They never showed up to pick us up. Waiting on the refund. We will be reporting this as fraud if a refund is not issued.
The tour guide rarely speaks English, we were taken to many shopping places for a lot of time, guide guide didn’t explain important things with me
This was great excursion! Our tour guide Robert was very knowledgeable. The drinks were passed out to us throughout the entire ride both ways. The only two negative things I have to say is that the drinks could've been passed out more frequently (because I am a drinker) but it's not really a bad thing, no one got drunk, and by the time we got to Chichen Itza (it was our last stop) we had very little time to explore because the park closed. That was definitely a bit disappointing.
Pick a different company if you want to see Chichen Itza. This was a 15 hour life sucking day and struggle to get any communication from Mayab Travel Tours. I had to message, WhatsApp, and call and still not pickup time the day before the excursion. Finally at 8:30 pm we received messaging indicating 6:40 am pick up. Thanks for the zero notice. The driver did not indicate we were randomly stopping at a bunch of places, including a centralized taxi type station in Cancun and then a coffee shop where we were dropped off, almost an hour and half AFTER pick up. Still no communication, other than waiting for another bus. Finally, after 2 hour in CANCUN we were on the road. The guide mainly spoke Spanish and gave little info to the English speakers. After trying to upsell everyone on their platinum package, they did start pouring drinks for those that paid for that privilege. We only got 20 min in Valladolid, which was enough to see the church. The next part was EXCRUSIATING. The "Mayan village" stop was a tourist trap where you were forced to stand around in the heat/sun to listen to the schpeel and then told to go buy stuff in the over priced souvenir store. Then forced to wait outside in the heat. We were there over an hour and they didn't really want you going to look at the small Mayan temple there. This stop was purely to get you to buy overpriced items ($20 usd for a fridge magnet). We got to the Cenote and were given one hour to eat lunch and swim. I was told my package included the locker and life jackets but I had to pay for those again there. Again, ZERO communication or help from the guide. The cenote was nice but with limited time you barely had time to change and swim 10 minutes before needing to hurry and eat. Lunch was old and dried out. Even though we were given our drink tickets as part of our package we could only get the flavored water, (again, not what was indicated.) The worst part was when we finally got to Chichen Itza, gathered and inside there was less than an HOUR before closing. By the time we walked to several areas they were already closed off. We basically spent the whole day getting there and little time to actually see what the day was intended for. As for the souveniers, you can buy any of those any stop you make for much cheaper (including the hundreds of vendors that now line the streets of Chichen Itza). Don't get sucked in. But definitely don't get stuck on a bus for 15 hours to not see the main attraction. The one thing they did do right was provide the drinks (water, soda for us/ alcohol for others )and umbrella as promised since I was a sucker and had upgraded with my original booking. I picked this company because it said the first stop was Chichen Itza and I had wanted most of the time spent there.
By far the best tour team I have ever had!! Luggie, Marcos and Sammy made this trip unforgettable! We paid $95 which included pickup, lunch, drinks and 14 hours of pure joy! This was with Lilly Company.
William very attentive on the long bus ride made sure everyone had drinks and snacks, Luke was a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable and was bilingual. Great experience. F7n fill3d all day tour.
Ticket sales not trustworthy. They sold me a tour to Chichén Itzá for me and my family at “Mexican national price” . Mind you it’s only ~$20 difference per ticket. However, at the site I was told to pay for a brand new ticket $600 pesos (foreigner entrance fee) for one of my family members. Highly inconvenient during a family vacation. Makes me wonder - did Francisco sell me a ticket at discount rate to beat his competition and make a quick sale? For the staff to later tell me I HAVE to buy a new ticket (600 pesos) because one of our family members was not Mexican national. The ticket salesman knew this as they verify your nationality during booking process. Basically they sale you a ticket at a discount, only tell you it’s invalid later at the site, and you’re stuck paying for a brand new ticket. Don’t waste your time on scammers during vacation. Plenty of other options and reputable companies - don’t do business with Mayab Travel Tours.
I wanted to enjoy this tour. I was so excited to show my husband the amazing Mayan city. However, our bus was 20 mins late picking us up, with no communication and we were the first to be picked up. Next our tour leader (didn't get his name due to the rambling in Spanish) spoke so much, and so slowly, it seemed like our tour was in slow motion. Not only that, I thought I booked an English speaking tour, but he spoke in Spanish 75% of the time. So much so, that at one point I had to yell out, "I don't know what you're saying" and my husband started to tune him out all together, which caused him to miss pertinent information. The tour leader even told the bus that he didn't repeat information, so if we weren't listening, or if we were sleeping, oh well. The most disappointing part was once we got to Chitzen Itza, we stood in one place over 20 minutes while he rambled on in Spanish and passed out pictures. I watched as other groups stopped, clapped at the entrance, and moved on over and over. He would just say, I'm almost finished. Some of my group, obviously antsy to move on, just started to walk away, myself included. When he finally moved from the corner, I could see there was rain coming. I watched as vendors frantically packed up their goods yet he continued his snails pace. At this point I walked away again towards the Warrior Temple, but it was too late. The heavens opened up and we had a downpour I'd never seen before, and we had to find cover where we could. My husband, frustrated said had he sped it up, he could have seen more, and we had to make the drenched walk back to the bus early. I understand the guide can't control the weather, but he should be able to read the room and see the group getting antsy, walking away, not understanding him, and the rain coming. I feel like we lost what little time we had there due to his arrogance. The stop at Valladolid was pointless. We got off the bus for 20 min and he pointed out a church in case we wanted to take a picture of it. The 2 stars are because of Marco our onboard waiter, the cenote swim and lunch. Marco was great! He was very helpful and attentive. The cenote, beautiful, and we loved having the opportunity to experience swimming in a cenote. Outside of that, I wouldn't suggest this tour with our tour leader (I dint know his name because he mumbled and rambled on incoherently). If it were a Spanish/ English tour (not what it said when i purchased) then he should have said everything evenly, not the vast amount of conversation in Spanish. The experience was extremely disappointing.
The staff was very nice and friendly. They had a great sense of humor throughout the entire trip. The cenote and Chichén Itzá were both beautiful places to explore. Food could have been better but not horrible for buffet style.
After 40 minutes of driving to Chichen Itza, they turned off the AC, claiming it was broken, and started offering an upgrade package for access to fresh drinks. We then stopped at a Mayab Village, which wasn't on the schedule, where they were selling overpriced items. Then miraculously the AC got fixed. They also tried to charge us an extra $20 dollars , claiming the package price had increased, even though we were already on the bus and already paid a deposit for the reservation only have to pay rest amount. Please avoid any tour with Mayab Travel. I highly recommend Ocean Tour—they are much more professional.
This tour was great! I took a day trip to Chichen Itzá, Valladolid, the Mayan town of Ebtún, and the X-cajum cenote from Puerto Adventuras. I started the day really early where we got in a small shuttle which picked up some people and brought us to Playa del Carmen where we were transferred on a coach bus which brought us to our first stop in Valladolid to see the lovely church. They gave us breakfast on the bus which consisted of a sandwich, a juice box, and some cookies. Be prepared for the time change since the province of Yucatán is an hour behind Quintana Roo. We didn’t get to Valladolid until 3 and a half hours after we left. We stayed there for 20 minutes, saw the church and then drove another 15 minutes to the small Mayan village of Ebtún where we got to meet a Mayan shaman we explained to us his culture and also spoke in his language which was a very cool experience. We also ate lunch there at a nice Mayan buffet with good traditional food. Next we drove another half hour to Chichen Itzá which was a nightmare to get into. We had to wait on a long line which was very chaotic. We had two hours at Chichen Itzá. 1 hour of a guided tour which the tour guide did a great job on, and 1 hour of free time to explore. I wish I could’ve had more free time, but the experience was great regardless. After another half hour, we made it to the Cenote X-cajum which was a great experience. Once you get there, you need to get life jackets and towels. The you walk down a lot of stairs to get the cenote. The water is very cold but you get used to it. There is a zip line into the water and a diving board. You also have the option of jumping from a platform way higher up. It was a great experience. In total, the guides were great, but I didn’t end up getting to the hotel until 9:45. I 100% recommend this tour.
Overall Great experience all the activities were well thought and enough time given Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable
Horrendous experience. We were promised a big bus with space but instead were shoehorned into an uncomfortable shuttle with rude inconsiderate tour guides who overpriced our tour. Barely spoke english for us. Plus, this shuttle had to detour considerably for hours to accommodate people they picked up in playa del carmen. When I asked for some compensation for the misdelivered goods (i.e. a nice big tour bus that went to the promised destination and back to cancun) they said they had to "ask their boss". I expressed how upsetting all this was and they just laughed at us and shocker, no compensation. Cancun is one big scam
Exploring the ruins of Chichen Itzá and swimming in the cennote. The drive is long but the tour bus was comfortable for the most part. The food at the buffet was decent. Overall a good trip for anyone looking to explore Mexico outside the resorts.
We happened to have a guide whose story telling abilities were horrible, and it went like that: he said half a sentence in English and then the whole content in Spanish (yep, the tour was not for these that learned English at school), I was the only one in our group who could understand bits in Spanish). He could talk for 2 hours non stop not giving any useful information: no facts, nothing about the places where we go, no historical context, nothing about ancient historical sites. He was extraordinary in his act. I really admire him as a human being because he managed to make our whole group angry for a very good morning, and the trip starts early in the morning. Good exercise for us though, to learn how to not loath people for just their being once you paid them money 😅 He is a terrible guide, though. Also, not enough time for the main attractions, but we stopped in a few places on the go “to buy souvenirs from the Mayan people”, which how this trip should be named, where we had plenty of time to do nothing.
The tour brought us at Cenote very late 5pm - the time when the Cenote officially closed. We didn’t enjoy the Cenote at all
Chitchen Itza was fantastic. The guide explained so much. Shame we only had 2 hours could have spent much longer. The cenote swim was lovely and the Mayan ritual more spiritual than I thought it would be. Quite a lot of pressure to buy obsidian figures which were very expensive This tour states drinks inc alcoholic drinks and you don’t get that. We could have had beer but I don’t drink that anything else including drinks at lunch need to be paid for so we didn’t bother The lunch is edible and worth filling up because you don’t get back until about 8.30. It’s a long time on a coach, especially for children but totally worth it in my opinion.
My husband and I took the tour, and when we arrived, it took long to wait and was very confused on which bus and which tour guide we were assigned. During the tour there was NO English spoken when the tour guide clearly knew I spoke only English. There was no acknowledgement or good service. There was no water given during the ride and nor did any of the guides offer us anything to drink even if we were willing to pay on this very humid ride. The 1st stop was the cenote and buffet where we only got 1.5hrs to go around and eat. That was not enough time to enjoy anything, instead I felt rushed. The next stop was Vailladod where we only got 20mins to go around which was not ideal. At our last stop chitchen Itza we had 2hrs with was a sufficient amount of time but could have been longer. All around the tour was not a tour and there was no service or kindness involved.
This was an incredible experience. Our tour guide, “Lilly” made the entire trip very enjoyable and his team was INCREDIBLE! They picked us up in Cancun and took us on a bus to Chichen Itza with a stop in Cenote. The whole tour was organized by somebody on the main resort here in Cancun. We left at seven in the morning and got back around nine at night from Cancun. They had separate vans to bring us to the main bus which brought us all the way. We bought the package which included unlimited alcohol and water, the entire trip, which was really nice. They gave us food while we were on the bus and also stopped in a Mayan town to get lunch. What was very nice is that I lost my camera in the bus and they organized it to be returned to my hotel. This was a really nice experience and we will do it again. - Brendan and Doris Larson
This is the best scam I’ve experienced yet! From beginning to end! I want a full refund. As we were sold an incredible experience, learning the Mayan culture, offered an opportunity to purchase items created by the Mayan people, feed by the Mayan people who cooked the foods for us under the ground in traditional Mayan ways. There was major emphasis on showing appreciation and respect for the land that the Mayan people live on, to also be aware of the their humble way of living and enjoy a life changing phenomenal swim in a crystal blue water Cenote. Ohhhh! But no no no and nope. As got on the first bus, We were taken on a “wild adventure” through the “jungle” aka highway/interstate. We arrived after a 2-3 hour bus ride that included a brown bag lunch contagion a juice box, a small pack of cookies and weathered meat and cheese sandwich. The bus was suppose to have no more than 20 people but there was more than 30. It was filled to capacity crying babies and all. We finally arrive to the “Mayan Village” We walked up, I saw several what appeared to be Mayan people reporting to work wearing the uniform white shirt and black pants. Obviously not living on the grounds as many hustled from their brand new modern cars reporting to work. So one could imagine the confusion as I was set up to believe we’d see real Mayan people in their natural environment living daily lives which seemed far fetched but who was I say something -respectfully I listened to the extensive stories that included pictures about what we would see such as the way of the people and how their lifestyle is free from current amenities and yet it was clear they lived else where among society! The entire village was made up, created just like Disney world, it was a live production a show for entertainment ! We were all scammed as we saw nothing of the sorts of what was expected. Oh and that blue water “cento” I was set to believe we would bask in was no where to be seen like I said a sink hole filled with grounds for breeding insects. Also be prepared after a long day to board the bus for another 3 hours. What a crock! Over priced made up, ridiculous waste of our family’s rare vacation time. Don’t do it. Rent a car! Go on your own! And skip the Mayan Village/cento experience all together. #Buyer beware!
We booked through Amigo tours, a two day tour. The first day was amazing as it was actually Amigo tours running the tour to Chichen Itza. On the second day we were picked up on a huge full bus run by Mayab Travels. Our tour was supposed to be bilingual but he some mainly Spanish and never bothered to translate most of the time. He was rude and dismissive of some of the English speaking guests and made rude actions with his hands calling them “these people”. The tour seemed disorganized and we ended up losing time. There was a lady with a cane and I myself was in pain and asked to sit on the bus since we were not swimming. They had told my sister no already. But since the bus was supposed to be open from 10 mins before leaving I went back and it was still closed with none of the operators in sight. Turns out they were all on the bus sleeping. When we saw one of them we asked to go in (at the time we were to go in… bus was still closed) he banged on the door and they opened. At the end of the tour the rude operator knowing we would be dropped off first started trying to be nice to us. When we got off the bus he had a basket pretty much forcing a tip. I told him I had no money but my sister gave him a few bucks. I am happy our tour didn’t include playa del Carmen. We booked to do that another day. Overall it was not worth it and we could have taken a taxi there since he provided no info at all (opposite of Marco our tour guide from the day before). The times he did say anything it was only in Spanish… he spoke a few words of English showing us a stone so we could buy it at the gift shop. Could have been a shorter and better experience with a private taxi.
We really wanted to visit Chichén Iza but after reading some reviews we were unsure if it’s a good use of our time and money. However, we decided to go in the end and we would definitely recommend this tour (with Mayab Travels). What to expect: - We were picked up at 6.50am from our hotel (the bus arrived promptly) and we were dropped off in the Cancún bus area where we were boarded onto our tour bus after a short wait. Chelino was our tour guide and we got a lot of useful info on the way (everything is said in both English and Spanish) - everything was clear and well organised - The first stop was Chichikan, a mayan village where we stayed for approx 2h. We were given food (large variety of options and all good - and this is coming from a veggie, fussy eater) & we were given the opportunity to swim in a cenote. We didn’t go for it, but be prepared to rent a vest and locker with your own money based on the reviews as this is an additional activity you can do or skip so it is not included in the price. This also applies for drinks there - you’ll need to bring your own water or pay for your drinks - We then had a super quick stop in Valladolid (20 mins). I think there is a nice park to visit but we used that time to buy some water instead - Final stop was Chichén Itzá where tours were provided (one in English and one in Spanish). Our English tour guide was great and he gave us all the info we could have wished for. You then have some spare time if you want to see the sacred cenote (no swimming allowed) - I think we had 1.5/2h allowed here as well - After that, we were dropped off back at our hotel (with one more pit stop for a bio break) Some general comments: - The tour takes 12-13h so bring water, hat, sun cream, swimming stuff, snacks etc. you can leave them in the bus safely - We didn’t go for the deluxe option (which costs $17 more or so) which includes unlimited beverages in the bus as we brought water and snacks with us - however you may want to consider it if you don’t have supplies with you as it is VERY hot (38-40 degrees) - The bus has AC which is very nice after wondering around - Some of the reviews were that you are ‘pressured’ into buying/tipping everywhere - this is of course, expected (for people to try sell you things) but there is no pressure whatsoever. You can say no gracias and all is fine All in all, it was a long day but we loved it ☺️
The guy was trying to convince people as soon as we started to upgrade the package to have drinks in bus included. He was rolling his eyes on everything people were saying. Took us to cenote where they forced us to take the foto just to come out at the end with bottle of local drink with our photo on it asking 400 pesos for it. In Chichen-Itza they gave us the guide that was quite offensive saying all Europeans are stupid. As the cherry on top, at the end, before dropping us off, main guide did a 10 minute monologue about tips and how people in Mexico live from that. I don't mind tipping as a lot of people here work hard but these guys didn't do anything to earn their tips.
Me and my wife booked this tour through Isla Mujeres Trips and it was so nice that they picked us up from the ferry in Cancun (we were staying on Isla) so we didn't have to get a taxi to meet somewhere else. It did take a while to get started since we had a large group but once we got going it was all really good. We never felt rushed. Lots and lots of driving though so time for several naps. At the Cenote they gave us an hour and a half to eat and swim if we wished. Then we had a quick visit to Valladolid and then made our longest visit to Chichen Itza. We had 2 hours which was good but so much to explore so would be nice to have more time there but we got to see the main things. The tour guides were very knowledge and cracked lots of jokes. We booked this trip as this tour included cost of admission into Chichen Itza while most others do not. We had a great time and would recommend Maya B.
Day's schedule: - 7:30am: Picked up by a van from hotel. Transported to another location to board the big bus. - 9:00am: Bus starts driving...welcome message...itinerary...explanation of upgrade options (drinks, towels). Majority of people, including us, select the Deluxe option and felt it was worth every penny. Talks are given in Spanish and English so focus is required. - 9:30am: First drinks are served along with a sandwich, granola bar, and juicebox. The "waiters" are fantastic, attentive, and hustle big-time. - First stop at Valladolid for 15 minutes. Very beautiful architecture. - 10:45am (clock goes back one hour due to time zone change): Second stop at cenote/lunch. Starts with Shaman ritual followed by walk through the souvenir shop. After getting mandatory life-jackets, swam in the amazing cenote (big highlight) before enjoying buffet lunch. - 1:00pm: Bus leaves for Cichen Itza. More drinks. - 2:30pm: Arrival at the pyramid. Walk through a gauntlet of souvenir vendors before seeing one of earth's 7 wonders. A local "English-speaking" guide gave an effortful tour but I couldn't comprehend much of his talk. Suggest watching some YouTube vids so you are better prepared. The tour finished and we explored on our own. Took tons of pics while debating why this was built. Very happy to have been given umbrellas for shade. - 4:30pm: More drinks. Bus leaves for return trip. Brief stop at the last souvenir/snack shop before long drive to Cancun. - 9:30pm: Arrival to Cancun. First tour of this type for our family so am unable to compare it to another. Overall extremely satisfied with the whole experience.
TL;DR: Do not waste your precious time in Mexico with this agency. If you book through chichenitza.com you may get this agency. First of all, similar to what others have mentioned regarding logistics, this agency will not pick you up on time. Our original pick up time at the hotel was 7.10 and at 8.45 we were still in Cancun. We got to Xcajun only around noon, that is roughly 5 hours after pick-up time. Now, onto the guiding part. You would think that during those 5 hours you would get some insight about the location you are about to visit or the logistics of the day, but you would be wrong. The two most important pieces of information you will get during your trip is how to upgrade you package to plus and deluxe (tip: don't) and how incredible Mayan craftsmanship is, especially an obsidian-amulete, a Mayan birth-certificate and so on. Curiously, you will be offered exactly these same items when you arrive to the shop that makes your first stop. The rest of what you will get on the bus are borderline Q-Anon talks: how Wikipedia is the MOST liar website and how the Gregorian calendar looses 17 days per 52 years. Bonus note here: our guide was extremely passive-aggressive talking a lot of political stuff and even went so far to say that "if you are racist you should kill yourself" (which may or may not be true, just not the kind of speech you expect to hear while relaxing on the Riviera Maya, mind you). As I said, the first stop is the Shaman thing and then to the gift shop. Once you are on the shop, the guide will stop caring about you, his job for the day is done. We where waiting for guidance of where to go next after the 20-min "shopping time", but we were never told that we could make our way to Lunch and the Cenote. At the Cenote the guide never showed up to make sure that the group was making their way back to the bus on time. We ended up leaving Xcajun latter than expected, leaving very little time to the main attraction of the day, Chichén Itzá. We were supposed to have 2 hours on-site. We had considerable less time than that as we arrived ~3.30 and they started kicking us out quite early for them to close at 5pm. The only upside, is that the guide inside the site is provided by the site operators and not Mayab. The guide had to rush though, due to the lack of time. On our way back we made the 20 minute stop in Valladolid. This is a very straightforward stop in downtown, but some how the guide manage to make this a pain. He clearly wanted to make it back soon and was threatening the clients that they will be dropped if they do not make them back on time because the police will escort them to the highway if they spend more than 20 minutes parked in the square. WTF. The police station is right there, so is full of cops, but they were really minding their own business. If you want people to be back on time, just say so. Finally, if you still care about COVID, these tours use 40+ person buses. And they will pack them up.
We upgraded to the Deluxe package but it wasn't worth it. Cenote was beautiful, but on the way there, we were not offered any drinks (not even water). Deluxe package says UNLIMITED drinks on bus with a "butler"?? 3 of the 4 of us speak English so my teenage son lost out on lots of tour at Chichen Itza, even after I asked him to translate please! We ended up leaving the tour group to sightsee on our own out of frustration. They stopped at one point at a souvenir store (could have done without that). They will tell you to buy the Deluxe for the beverage at your lunch spot. The lunch spot was horrible. Staff makes you leave any beverage containers outside. They make money off selling you drinks. If you go the Deluxe route, you get one small drink. And the wait staff is scarce so good luck getting a refill. Its packed in there so don't expect to sit alone at any table. We barely had time to eat so eat BEFORE you go to the Cenote. This is our 3rd guided tour and had much better service before. Don't go with MAYABTRAVEL.
It was a very long day but it was worth it. It’s longer as 11 hours, it’s more like 14 hours that you’re away from your hotel. 3 hours in the bus to and back from cancun so that was not that nice as you only see jungle in these 6 hours in the bus. The first village where the mayas live and where you can swim in a cenote. Don’t buy your souvenirs there as they are way cheaper at chitzen itza! (You would not expect but it’s true) the Tourguide (Luis) was amazing. He told us a lot about the Maya’s and the buildings. He liked joking around and made us laugh a lot. He really made our day. Thank you so much!!
You need to be aware that everyone is trying to sell you something when in Mexico. We decided to go with Mayab as we were PROMISED that there will be no additional costs. Please see below our experience. PROS * Pick up time exactly as arranged 6.50am at our hotel * Modern bus with aircon, lots of room for legs * Scheduled activities that were explained about on the bus CONS * our guide David was mostly speaking in Spanish, we were hoping to get more knowledge but we got only basics as he focused on Spanish people * VERY AGGRESSIVE SALE, first stop was Mayan shop, we felt like cattle herded into lion's den. 30mins for shopping and we were being followed by people forcing you to buy something. There were beautiful things in that shop but bring harassed all he time you lose interest * HIDDEN COSTS AT CENOTES, we were told no hidden costs but had to pay 250 pesos for life jackets for 4 people and locker, you don't get a drink with lunch even water, another 200 pesos for family of 4. * No explanation of where to go in cenotes, very chaotic, 50 min for lunch and 50 mins for cenotes but that means all the time you are looking for things you are wasting your time to enjoy. We weren't told that face masks ate obligatory in restaurant and we weren't offered one, again had to buy it, which should be covered by the price of trip. * RUSHED EXPERIENCE IN CHICHEN ITZA , everything was extremely rushed, we got guided tour but again mostly in spanish , some basics facts on english, then we had only 45 mins to explore. BE AWARE that there is no maps, signs, nothing so you go blindly and all paths are done the way that you pass all vendors who again harass you to buy things. Don't get me wrong, I understand this is extremely poor community but it ruins your experience. * Last stop Valladolid, what a joke, 20mins to explore the town, didn't even have time to buy some ice creams for kids Overall I would recommend renting a car and do the trip yourself, it will be cheaper and you will do it on your own time, not being rushed all the time.
The day before the excursion we purchased the deluxe package as we were told that with this package a box lunch, alcoholic beverages on the tour bus and one beverage with lunch was included compared to the classic and plus package (the brochure of the packages is in the photo). The biggest issue on the actual day of the tour was on the tour bus, we expected to get the alcoholic beverages with the deluxe package we had purchased. However the tour guide on the bus told us that we would have to upgrade to the diamond package in order to drink alcoholic drinks on the bus which made no sense as we had the deluxe and he told us that we were wrong, we went ahead and paid for the diamond package because we didnt want to ruin the all-day trip further. We contacted the sales person via text that had originally sold us the package and he confirmed we didnt have to pay extra to upgrade and 10 minutes later the tour guide on the bus spoke on the speaker in front of everyone on the bus and said "those of you who have contacted the company can stop that because it is not true that we are refusing to give out drinks". We are disappointed with the way things were managed. It was disorganized and unprofessional of the people who are meant to represent the company. I feel like we got scammed, advertised a package and not receiving the full contents of it.
They are obviously extremely professional, operative and logistics wise, BUT the guides( Garza and Gavier) were extremely roud, aggressive and lack of patients for English speakers. The "Shaman ceremony" is a waste of time and in my opinion, making a bad name to the Maya's tribe legendary reputation. It is very commercial tour. The guides didn't let anyone ask questions. It appears as they wanted to "puke" their knowledge and that's all. The driver was extremely nice.
Fantastic tour, a lot of different activities. The tour guides were friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed and informative. The food at Cenote was great.
Ivan, Julio y Manaces were awesome tour guides. They made everything so fun and we had the best treatment. We were a group of 29 we were all very pleased. They had to make a lot of drinks and did everything with a smile. Also they were super knowledgeable anything we asked they answered with knowledge. There is a lot of choices when doing tours. After talking to several sales reps. We decided to go with scuba caribe. They offer us a private bus at a cheaper rate with everything included. Mayabtravel picked us up. Best hosts Julio, Ivan y Manaces.
I wish I had read the reviews... Avoid unless your fluent Spanish. But even if you speak Spanish, you'll probably find better hospitality and better service elsewhere. We had a package that included drinks, but they only started serving drinks once we started complaining about the missing drinks after 2pm (tour started with a pick-up at 6:45am). At the Chichen Itza they hired a professional Spanish speaking tour guide and the English speaking part of the group got the guy from our bus who barely spoke English. Very disappointing. And btw. the whole company seemed kind of unorganized...
The tour was good, and our guide Javier was wonderful. The only thing is I would not recommend this tour to anyone leaving from Tulum since they drive us to Playa del carmen to take a bigger bus which adds a total of 2 hours of driving to a already long day
Called to verify pickup time and location, they said be in the lobby at 6:30 am. We waited 2 hours and the bus never showed up.
Bus picked us up on time at 7:25am from our hotel. We then spent a further 1.5 hours at various stops filling the bus up, eventually leaving at 9:00am. Our guide on the bus only spoke scripted English which was interspersed with Spanish a sentence at a time and very fast so extremely difficult to follow. The first stop was not until 11am so 3.5 hours for us after boarding the bus. For reference the order of our stops was the town, then expensive market, lunch and swim at Cenote and finally Chechen Itza. The places we stopped at were lovely and the English tour guide at Chechen Itza was great. We got dropped back to our hotel at 9:30pm. It was a looong day. Luckily I had packed tons of snacks and drinks as we were on the classic tour and as others have said it's really not worth upgrading. All other reviews accurate guides on the bus not at all friendly unless selling you an upgrade and level of English not sufficient to even answer general questions about the day. Huge amount of pressure to tip at the end. All in all great places to visit but wish we had paid more for smaller group and fully English speaking tour meaning a shorter day.
