Itinerary
Please note that the below itinerary provides an example of places often visited on the tour, but the route may vary to provide you with the best tour possible on any given day.
We start at the Round Church, Cambridge's quirkiest (and, we think, most beautiful) church building, which predates the university. The church houses an exhibition and 20-minute film, and access to these are included in guided walk tickets.
We typically start by venturing down to the River Cam, where a clear sense of the town's origins can be gained at Magdalene Bridge.
Tours are sometimes able to go inside 1-2 colleges, but this is not always possible and we cannot guarantee this. Magdalene College, where C.S. Lewis was based during his time in Cambridge, can also be viewed from the Quayside.
We stop to admire the exterior of the chapel and gatehouse of St John’s College.
We view the gatehouse of Trinity College, and Isaac Newton’s apple tree.
We spend some time surrounded by the central University buildings: the University church, the Senate House, and Cambridge University Press bookshop, as well as the beautiful Gonville and Caius College.
Opposite Great St Mary's Church is the University Senate House, where students graduate.
We view the exterior of King's College, including the magnificent chapel, from King's Parade.
We aim to give you a feel for some of Cambridge's most iconic and influential spots, both on and off the beaten track. Tours sometimes visit the Church of St Edward King and Martyr, where it is claimed the first Protestant sermon was preached in England.
We visit one of the newer additions to Cambridge's historic King's Parade and explore its significance.
We stop to admire the tower of St Bene't's, which is the oldest building in Cambridge, dating from c.1020.
Opposite St Bene't's we see The Eagle pub.
We venture to the Old Cavendish Laboratory, site of significant scientific work and discoveries.
Tours are sometimes able to go inside 1-2 colleges, but this is not always possible and we cannot guarantee this.

Wonderful experience, i'll be back next year.
Despite the rainy weather, we had a fantastic walking tour with Dave who was very knowledgeable as a local. Very happy to answer any questions, professional and yet friendly at a comfortable pace. I would highly recommend this to anybody visiting Cambridge for the first time but also just to understand a bit more about its history, which is absolutely fascinating. It's well worth turning up a little early to spend a bit of time in the round church. Excellent value for money...I couldn't recommend it more highly
John was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. He wove together the history of the city and the university with the cultural and religious context, and some of the big ideas and discoveries that were birthed or developed in this unique place. The pace was not too fast, with stops at some iconic spots in front of great colleges, ending with a peaceful college chapel. There were some fun facts and student capers woven in too. He engaged all ages including some children. Highly recommended.
Thanks Dave for a great tour ! Can’t be easy to summarise all that history but you did a great job, helped by the bright weather
A very interesting and catching tour given by Dave who knew everything about Cambridge University and UK history. If you want more of depth than ordinary tourist tours, I recommend this. Don’t miss the the display and movie inside the round church which are included in the guided tour ticket.
Dave was a brilliant guide. He was knowledgeable and amusing in equal measure. It was particularly good how he related many facts back to the Christian faith of the people involved. The good weather helped our enjoyment as 95% of the tour was outdoors.
This was one of the best walking tours I have ever been on. Dave was nothing short of exceptional. He delivered a comprehensive amount of information in a witty and engaging way. If you're keen to know more about the past 1,000 years of English history, the machinations of the Royals, and how our world has been shaped by the former students of Cambridge University, then this is the tour for you.
Ian our guide was informative. We know much more about Cambridge now and must start looking up at buildings.
Must do when in Cambridge. Ian, our very knowledgeable and fun tour guide was the best thing in Cambridge. We learnt so much about the university and its history. Recommended to all ages.
Martin was a wonderful guide who shared lots of insightful local and historical knowledge. The tour opened our eyes to the depth of Cambridge's history and inspired profound thoughts on education and spirituality. We're grateful to have taken the tour.
Walking with Tony Rodgers simply could not have been bettered. Information was focused and detailed and served with a sense of humour. Highly Recommended.
Ian was a superb guide, very knowledgeable and personable. The group size was small and the pace just right.
I would have scored five stars but only gave four as I thought we would actually be going into the colleges and not just standing outside. The guide was very pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful and the tour just the right length. It was good value for money.
A wonderful & informative tour, our guide Dave had incredible knowledge of Cambridge. Very impressed with the whole tour.
Enjoyable and interesting historical tour. Dave was an enthusiastic and very knowledgeable guide, who easily filled the 2 hours with interesting facts! Recommend.
We had a. Amazing and knowledgeable guide. Can’t recommend highly enough. It was a great way to spend the afternoon in Cambridge
This is a leisurely stroll through the streets of Cambridge filled with phenomenal facts and details. Our guide Martin was extremely knowledgeable and pleasant.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A wonderful and very enjoyable tour of Cambridge! Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining, and gave us a fascinating insight into the University, its colleges, history and traditions. We particularly appreciated learning that the tour is connected with a charitable organisation — it made supporting the experience feel even more worthwhile. Cambridge has such a wonderful atmosphere, and this tour was a perfect way to discover it. We learned a lot, had plenty of laughs and thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon. Thank you for a fantastic experience. Highly recommended! ❤️🎓
Be careful of traffic in crowded areas. Helpful to have a simple map of the central area. Lots of information to take in about Cambridge history and amusing stories.
What an excellent experience this was! I spent July travelling around the UK and attended several walking tours in several locations, but this one in Cambridge was the highlight! So informative, and such a fantastic tour guide. The unfortunate thing is I forget the first name of the guide who took us out in the late afternoon session on July 16th. If when you reply to this review, can you add their name, so the review is connected with that excellent tour guide! Regards Michael.
No reason not to recommend this tour. This was my second visit to Cambridge, and this time it was much more fascinating and inspiring thanks to this tour. I not only learned about the history and practical aspects behind the pretty buildings and the city, but also gained a bigger picture of the countless stories behind them. I feel very lucky that my partner happened to find and choose this tour!
Such a lovely experience I learned so much about history and met new people It was 2 hours full of joy and excitement The tour guide David was so nice and helpful I enjoyed every single moment
Excellent tour well worth the money. Our guide was interesting and knowledgeable. A good way to get to know the heart of the city.
David was an excellent tour guide. I really enjoyed this tour; he had a really deep understanding of Reformation and monarchical history at the time of the Reformation, which really enriched the experience. He gave us all the surrounding historical context of the Reformation—with Charles, the Puritans, Mary I, Elizabeth, and Henry VIII—which really helped us understand what we were seeing. As someone who is very interested in Christian and English history, this was excellent.
Ian Cooper is a legend - an excellent tour guide! He just needs to speak more clearly and less fast. He has no doubt said his guide words hundreds of times. But he needs to utter them as if he's saying them for the fist time. If he articulates better, his impact would be even greater.
Mary Forster-Lewis, our Cambridge Tour Guide was incredibly entertaining, informative and even engaged our 13 year old and 11 year old granddaughters. While there were hordes of tourists clogging the streets, she knew all the quiet alley ways and sites to make our experience private, easy to hear and safe! She could describe the education process in England so we Americans could understand the differences from ours. She related countless historical tidbits and told engaging stories.
Leans quite heavy on a Christian viewpoint - a little beyond what's necessary to describe the history of the university. That said John was a terrific guide and very knowledgeable, with excellent stories. About the right length and covered the main colleges.
David our guide had a vast knowledge of Cambridge history, the University, its origins in monasteries and its scholars and their interactions. Also got into Emmanuel college.
Wow! What a knowledgeable guide - fascinating to hear of the connections to historical themes. Well-worth it!
You will feel that you are in the presence of a learned preacher called to do exactly this. The guide intelligently and carefully connected the genius of the scholars with their faith in God as espoused by themselves in their works and writings. He was most articulate, clear and concise. He did his best to connect with each and everyone on the tour. I came on this tour from Ghana, yet he connected to me through his personal life in his early days in Nigeria and through the life and work of Clarkson and Wilberforce in the most intelligent way possible. It is entirely worth more than the few pounds I paid.
We have just finished a wonderful walking tour hosted by Ian. We had a fantastic experience, Ian was a brilliant guide and we would thoroughly recommend!
The two hour tour with David was absolutely excellent. It was interesting and very well paced. Very informative. Definitely recommend to understand some of the history of Cambridge. Why wouldn’t you?
This was a very interesting tour and we learnt a lot about the history of Cambridge. I was also impressed by the way our guide was able to answer questions.
Wonderful tour, Dave was amazing!
Very interesting. Our guide was so knowledgeable about so much. Wrap up well (we weren’t expecting it to be so cold).
A brillant tour with a brilliant guide. Thank you Ian Cooper (i hope i got his first name right) We learnt so much in our almost 2 hour tour.
Our guide was fantastic - he was incredibly knowledgeable and seemed truly interested in the history of the area as well as personally invested in the preservation of the church. You simply cannot replicate this via a booklet, AI, or a guide who is blurting out memorized talking points.
Delightful walking tour that was really informative. Our guide, John, was a font of interesting facts. As it is exam season we could only go into 1 of the free to enter colleges but found out so much about the history of the Uni and its colleges, alumni and supporters. There were only 7 of us on the tour, and it lasted for 2 hours 15 minutes. I think the instructions say that it ends where it starts which wasn't correct, but it wasn't an issue for us.
Excellent guide Jo with a small group. A mix of history and influence of religion- relevant in this seat of learning. Beautiful buildings and good ideas for more activities
A small group and an excellent guide. Jo gave us a clear and interesting tour making historical and Christian connections.
Jon was a fabulous guide. Knowledge and entertaining. Pace was brisk but he allowed for slower walkers in our group. Absolutely loced this tour. Thank you Jon!
An enthralling guide to Cambridge through the ages with expert and engaging enthusiast David. Can highly recommend!
John was an excellent, knowledgable guide who made the tour really interesting and fun. We learned a great deal about the history of Cambridge University and the many students who have made contributions to arts and sciences. Highly recommended.
Incredibly interesting with splendid guide, John!
A very knowledgeable guide. John made the tour interesting, fun and engaging. Even our 13 year old son had a great time and learnt lots of information and fun facts! Thank you so much John we had a great time
If you enjoy science and the history of Cambridge, you'll love this tour. We had a great time, chatted with other tour members and felt we knew a lot more about Cambridge by the end of the tour! Highly recommend.
Very enjoyable and good value for money, lasted 2 hours, the guide was very knowledgeable and attentive to all the groups needs.
Really informative, great way to learn about the history of Cambridge.. tour moved at a nice pace and would recommend it to anyone.
